- NC500 E13: Exploring Ullapool on Loch Broom on my North Coast 500 road trip & visiting Loch Glascarnoch & Corrieshalloch Gorge, part of National Trust Scotland. Waterfalls & gorges a plenty!

After checking out of my hotel I stopped off at Glascarnoch Dam for some stunning views of Glascarnoch Loch and the valley below. It was close to another scenic spot that overlooked a picturesque pebble filled river surrounded by miles and miles of beautiful Scottish countryside. One of the incredible things about the North Coast 500 is just how much there is to see on route, especially on the spectacular west coast of Scotland.
I made my first stop of the day at a National Trust Scotland nature reserve called Corrieshalloch Gorge - a place famous for its mile-long canyon, woodland trails and a 45 metre waterfall known as the Falls of Measach. I decided to take a short walk across the Victorian-era suspension bridge to a viewpoint of the waterfall, and although the most dramatic views were from the bridge itself it was still great to get out and explore the area on foot.
Within a few hours I was back on the road again heading for Ullapool - one of the largest settlements in the area and a place noted for its bars, restaurants and nightlife. Sadly, as I was travelling in COVID-19 times all of the pubs and bars had strict social distancing guidelines and all live events and performances were cancelled, so I decided to explore the streets, ferry port and history of Ullapool rather than any social or entertainment venues.
Although small, there's plenty to see and do and it was good to take a leisurely walk around just to see what was about. I loved the row of quaint white terraced houses looking over Loch Broom and it was fun flying my drone over the boats out on the water - until it started to rain that is! The weather in Scotland is unpredictable at best and it was one of those days that kept flipping between sunny spells and showers, sometimes even both at the same time!
Ullapool was an important Herring Port and the village was enlarged over a hundred years ago for that reason. It's surrounded by Scottish hills and the vast waters of Loch Broom. If you're on the NC500 it's definitely worth a visit!

Love Ullapool 🏴❤️🏴
Me too! It was a wonderful place to visit and I enjoyed looking around and seeing it for myself.
Nice footage, i went to Ullapool in 2019. Lovely place indeed.
Yes I really enjoyed stopping by and taking a walk around. Some wonderful vistas when you look out into the lochs. Another great find on Scotland's west coast.
Lovely place 💖
Yeah I liked it - nice to take a walk around!
I used to live there, nothing better than the road out!
Ha, I take it you're not a fan of the place!
You could say that lol
Several houses and the old single track road were flooded when they built that Dam
I didn't realise that, I was wondering how old it is? Do you know when they actually built it? Sounds like it had quite an impact for the people who lived around it.
Google Loch Glascarnoch Dam, I think it was built in the late 50's, it did create plenty of employment for a while
Saw a lorry teetering over the edge of this gorge one icy morning. Could've been around 2010.
Oh heck! That's a crazy scene. Bet the truck driver needed an underpants change after that one! Hope everyone was alright.
Nice Ferrari you got there! Not very nice way to name the quarry. That looks like a great spot to park the RV. 430 Million years ago? Wow! That is incredible. Marylou is a cute little boat! Franz Ferdinand and now Matt Whiting!
Yeah I could have done with that Ferrari, would have been quite interesting trying to navigate those little bumpy single-track lanes! On second thoughts maybe I'll stick with the Duster!! Franz Ferdinand and now Matt Whiting made me laugh - I can see it on the posters already. It's got a ring to it!
The harbour has been developed since this video and looks quite different.
Interesting, maybe one day if I go back I'll get to see it!

Very cool gorge. We just “camped” (cabin) near Quechee Gorge VT and did a small, easy hike. It’s the “Grand Canyon” of Vermont (some say of New England and even of the east coast but that’s a stretch). It was nice but does not compare to the one in this video. Fascinating segment on the place where England and Scotland came together. And loved the little boat garden at the end!
Thanks Heidi, enjoyed visiting the gorge - it was breathtaking! I'll admit that I had to look up Quechee Gorge so perhaps not quite as famous as the Grand Canyon haha! Looks good though, are there any bears in that area? I found the England/Scotland divide interesting too, it's something I'd not really thought about before - good to know!
Oh for sure. I read a couple of “problem” bears spotted there but they are mostly in the mountains and northeastern part of the state. Black bears are all over New England. They are often spotted in my hometown in southern New Hampshire.
That's interesting, I didn't realise there were so many in that area. I was just looking at the location of Quechee Gorge again and realised that I drove very close to it when travelling from Boston to Lake Placid in 2007. It was a lovely area!
nice video 🤜🤛 I will be there tomorow :)
Cool! Hope you're having a great day?! Beautiful area.
@@MattWhitingsEurope I make verry nice fotage so im very happy :D Greatings from Poland 🤜🤜🤛🤛
That's great! How did you like Ullapool? Glad you visited?
@@MattWhitingsEurope Was Nice:) I Nelly lost my drone there 🤣
Ha gotta hate it when that happens. I'll keep a look out for the video!!
Are you going to be posting the rest of your journey soon?
Hello Janice, I've got 3 more videos and I'll be posting them over the next three Fridays. Hope you're enjoying the trip!
Looking forward to watching them. However I am off on hols next week to Plockton and I am hoping to do a couple of day trips to Gareloch and Applecross. Do you have any must dos/sees.?
Well first of all have a great time, I hope the weather is kind to you! If you're coming up from Plockton I'd suggest stopping for a break in Lochcarron and then driving the Applecross Pass to Applecross (it's a challenging route but definitely worth it for the views). The Bealach na Ba Viewpoint is terrific and although Applecross is small it's a lovely village. If you end up going to Gairloch then I'd recommend a stop at Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve and the Glen Docherty Viewpoint, as well as a drive through Torridon - the landscape around there is magnificent. Hope that helps, if you have any questions please feel free to ask.
What makes me a good demoman!?
Ullapool, More like Ullapool Caber
Ae me bottle'o scrumpeh
I love cheap whiskey!
A Valley in Scotland is known as a Glen and you can't pronounce Loch properly.
Roger that, William. 😟
