I understand the African American comment slightly. Most people don't call white people European American, they just call them Americans. We're the same is what she means. That's not to say she isn't black.

I don't understand the backlash. The things Raven has said and done is pretty progressive thinking honestly. Not wanting to be labeled with sexual orientation or race/ethnicity, not wanting to be involved in a scandal just because she knew the person when she was a toddler so can't really comment about his behavior. The few call themselves Irish or Greek that weren't born there do face backlash. White people that say they are Irish, or Greek, or whatever, usually only say it when asked what their background or ancestry is. It's not a constant label. White people are white, but black people are "African-American"? It doesn't make sense.

Growing up in the 50's and 60's I wasn't even aware that 'some' of them called themselves whatever their background was until I started working downtown in the city where I live. I knew within the first month of every job I had who was Polish, Irish, Greek etc. I doubt if any black person asks about their background. No disrespect but you were all just white to me. If you had read all of my posts, I have repeatedly said that I do not use the term African American and personally don't know anyone who does. The only time I hear it is in the media and by white people so don't generalize by implying that all black people use the term. I actually understand her not liking the label of African-American. Americans come from all different backgrounds and many parts of the world. White Americans don't need to identify themselves based on their ancestry. No white person whose family has lived here for generations has to say they're European-American, Asian-American, or a member of wherever their ancestral roots are. Why do black people need a qualifier to say that they belong in their own country?
We have our origins, cultures, and traditions but it would be nice if we started bonding over our similarities instead of desperately needing this individual identity. I think it is kept in the back pocket as an excuse sometimes...for being able to say "You don't know me" in an argument. Our history shouldn't be our identity, or at least not enough of it for us to be angry over comments like this. We have no control over what happened, but we do have some control over where we go. I have this unpopular thought about pride. I'm not ashamed of where I come from. I'm not ashamed of being part black, part white, or part hispanic. I'm not ashamed of being gay. I'm not ashamed of my big nose or the gray in my hair. I'm also not proud of these things. These are not things I had control over or any say over. I didn't work hard to earn these things or create these things. If I make a painting, I am proud of that. If I build a house, finish a garden, or direct a movie...these are things that I created through skills that I learned or developed. I'm grateful for my parents protecting me and raising me. I don't like "gay pride" for many reasons and this is one of them. When we think existing is somehow something we deserve a pat on the back for, we really sell ourselves short.

When I was 16 I went to Switzerland with my sister and her band for the summer. Since they were performing and she and the second lead singer was the only women in the band, they needed a female assistant. I volunteered and everything for me was paid for. While we were out there, the locals called us American Girls, the pretty American Girls, or the black American Girls. I asked someone why they were not calling us African American? They asked me if I was born in Africa and immigrated to America. I said no, I was born in America. Then she told me that I was American. I noticed that the rest of the summer, no one called us African American. Just American. But as soon as we touch back on American soil, we were called African Americans again. We were one in Switzerland but here in my home country, we were divided. I will never forget that experience.

I’ve also visited the states and seen the (even self-enforced) racial categorisation there; I believe a lot of the division is self imposed within minority communities though there are real issues with racism (like police brutality, school choice etc) in the USA, I hope it can be overcome, it starts with the people.

As a black man, I really do agree with the African American thing, not just because of how little sense it makes to base one group of another country or countries but because most of us aren't truly African, even living in New York my whole life, I could probably count on two hands how much actual "African-American" people I know, the truth is most of us trace our heritage back to the Caribbean, my grandparents are Grenadian and Trinidadian, my dad is from St.Vincent, my mom is British, my great grandfather was Scottish, there's really nothing really African left about me, my family celebrates it's Caribbean heritage and we don't even know of whatever African ancestors we may of had, we don't celebrate any African traditions or anything, I think it's disrespectful to group all of the black Caribbean people as African for both the Caribbean and African people, I just rather be called black or if anything Caribbean American

I think it was because people wanted her to use her platform to fight for equal rights, and they perceived her comments as "Meh. I'm rich, so whatever you're going through isn't important to me. Look how easily I can distance myself from it". It could also be seen as her not being "proud" of who she is. I'm not saying I AGREE with either of these lines of thought - I actually think it's pretty dumb. I'm just saying that's probably why people got pissed. I also want to add that labels aren't actually part of human society, they're built into the human BRAIN. They're never going to go away, because the human brain is biologically wired to DEPEND on labels. Discrimination, labels and stereotypes all come from a drive that would have helped us when we were evolving in the wild - it's a danger warning system we developed that isn't necessary anymore, but hasn't gone away. Unless we evolve it out, the idea of completely removing these things from our society isn't very realistic; because it isn't PART of our society. It's a biological defence designed to help spot potential threats.

What upsets me is that the public gets angry and all fired up when a woman doesn't want to be labeled. I don't understand the backlash. The things Raven has said and done is pretty progressive thinking honestly. I actually understand her not liking the label of African-American. Americans come from all different backgrounds and many parts of the world. White Americans don't need to identify themselves based on their ancestry. No white person whose family has lived here for generations has to say they're European-American, Asian-American, or a member of wherever their ancestral roots are. I have this unpopular thought about pride. I'm not ashamed of where I come from. I'm not ashamed of being part black, part white, or part hispanic. I'm not ashamed of being gay. I'm not ashamed of my big nose or the gray in my hair. I'm also not proud of these things. These are not things I had control over or any say over. I didn't work hard to earn these things or create these things. If I make a painting, I am proud of that. If I build a house, finish a garden, or direct a movie...these are things that I created through skills that I learned or developed. I'm grateful for my parents protecting me and raising me. I don't like "gay pride" for many reasons and this is one of them. When we think existing is somehow something we deserve a pat on the back for, we really sell ourselves short.

When I was 16 I went to Switzerland with my sister and her band for the summer. Since they were performing and she and the second lead singer was the only women in the band, they needed a female assistant. I volunteered and everything for me was paid for. While we were out there, the locals called us American Girls, the pretty American Girls, or the black American Girls. I asked someone why they were not calling us African American? They asked me if I was born in Africa and immigrated to America. I said no, I was born in America. Then she told me that I was American. I noticed that the rest of the summer, no one called us African American. Just American. But as soon as we touch back on American soil, we were called African Americans again. We were one in Switzerland but here in my home country, we were divided. I will never forget that experience.

As a black man, I really do agree with the African American thing, not just because of how little sense it makes to base one group of another country or countries but because most of us aren't truly African, even living in New York my whole life, I could probably count on two hands how much actual "African-American" people I know, the truth is most of us trace our heritage back to the Caribbean, my grandparents are Grenadian and Trinidadian, my dad is from St.Vincent, my mom is British, my great grandfather was Scottish, there's really nothing really African left about me, my family celebrates it's Caribbean heritage and we don't even know of whatever African ancestors we may of had, we don't celebrate any African traditions or anything, I think it's disrespectful to group all of the black Caribbean people as African for both the Caribbean and African people, I just rather be called black or if anything Caribbean American

I also want to add that labels aren't actually part of human society, they're built into the human BRAIN. They're never going to go away, because the human brain is biologically wired to DEPEND on labels. Discrimination, labels and stereotypes all come from a drive that would have helped us when we were evolving in the wild - it's a danger warning system we developed that isn't necessary anymore, but hasn't gone away. Unless we evolve it out, the idea of completely removing these things from our society isn't very realistic; because it isn't PART of our society. It's a biological defence designed to help spot potential threats.
