I think Marion Butts was protesting the United States denying the Hawaiian monarchy its sovereign right to rule in Hawaii after the US defeated the Spanish in the 1898 Spanish-American War. It was a very knowledgeable protest against US colonialism.
I don't know what's more cringe, the fact that this dude is bringing Butts being an anti-Colonizer into a light hearted NFL video without even a single shred of evidence of this being the case anywhere, or the fact that the Channel pinned their no evidence political BS...
could have been taken out of context too, let's not rule that out. he may have meant continental US in actuality and was misquoted?? I can just give that explanation without it rather being an attack of someone's extended collective knowledge, per se. i mean that's a bold statement as to call him an utter moron to make but media seem to get away with it but anyone who can think at least slightly outside the box can give the benefit of the doubt. but i'm a big devoted follower of the old Magnum P.I. show and a free trip to HI and a visit to Aloha Stadium which featured on several episodes sounds too good to say no to, guess he never appreciated the magnificence of Magnum.
sure, Hawaii was one of those locations the US had to have at all costs, explaining the strategic advantages it's played before in the U.S.'s previous campaigns with Asia. It wasn't necessary political as it was more militarily. And a great story came of that about the Buffalo Soldiers who really sympathized the cause and saw numbers of defect to the Filipinos fighting in that campaign. (Buffalo Soldiers, black enlisted). It was in the skin color where it tipped them to defect. Hawaii and the Philippines made perfect strategic points for a naval operation, as good as it got to keeping an on call Navy force to deploy at a moment's notice.
Fun fact: the last time the Detroit Lions won the NFL championship (in 1957), Hawaii wasn't a state yet (Hawaii and Alaska became the final two states in 1959)...
James Brooks, 4 time Pro Bowl RB for the Bengals, was asked by a judge how he graduated from Auburn without being able to read. His answer was that he didn't have to go to class.
I can guarantee you living in South Dakota we are still North and South 😂. Great story. Marion Butts was a heck of a running back for the Chargers. As a Broncos fan we saw him twice a year. Then they got Natrone Means and he was even harder to bring down.
I didnt go to the 1992 Pro Bowl game but I did go to Hilton Hawaiian Village a day before the game. I met & got autographs from several players there. Though I didnt quite recognize him at 1st, I found out who he was when he was addressed by someone else but I didnt approach. I can attest that he wasnt crazy about being there. 0:01
I think the other thing to note is that there were a lot of commercials that would note that promotions were not valid in Alaska or Hawaii. So if he watched a lot of TV, he would have picked that up.
Butts was too lazy to say the word "continental" ahead of USA. And now we're talking about him 30 years later. It's a win-win, folks! Man, was possibly ahead of his time. He was clearly subconciously promoting Orlando back in 1993, like it is today.
I have been to places such as the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, South Korea, Japan, and China before. I had to go through customs, and had to get my passport stamped each time. I have also been to places such as Georgia, Oklahoma, Florida, California, Alaska, and Hawaii before. I did not have to go through customs, neither did I need to bring my passport either time. Would anyone like to guess why I didn't need my passport for the latter six places, and why I did need it for the first eight places?
And to all sports players, Alaska is also a state. Just chucking it out there cuz you never know if another athlete is going to blurt out, "Alaska's outside the U.S."
I couldn't stop laughing as I watched this video! I mean, Hawai'i had been a state for 31 years up to the time when Butts said that. Did he ever not learn basic geography? He was a hell of a halfback (I remember him tearing my Bucs' defense limb from limb in '90), but this wasn't his finest moment.
I worked as a bartender for many years and one of the arguments that came up a lot over the years was the number of states. I was always amazed at the number of people that didn't know there are 50 states.
Basic Geography Skills Exam I Which of the following is not a state in the United States? A) North Idaho B) Central Dakota C) Hawaii D) Both A & B E) All of the above F) None of the above Marion Butts: Answer C Anyone else with a functioning temporal lobe and/or hippocampus responding to that answer: 10:55
In all fairness, Marion Butts was a poor Black kid raised in the South, in the 60's. Not exactly a cultural hub. I'm sure Hawaii did seem like a foreign land a zillion miles away. Now if that happened today, with modern education and the internet, i think you'd be right to call them a moron.
There are huge numbers of people in the lower 48 states who think Hawaii is another nation, or U.S. territory like Guam. They aren't limited to the deep south.
Respectfully, wasn't he born in 1966? That would mean that he went to school in the 70s and 80s when geography was still taught in the K-12 system. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I could understand a player saying that about the Bahamas Bowl (though I imagine the NCAA and individual schools do fast track Passport Applications and explain to the Department of State why this needs to be fast tracked)... but Hawaii?
And this is why there needs to be an aptitude test for athletes. At the very least a geography test. Clearly either his grade schools didn't offer it, or he just didn't take it. Remember, education is very important. Unless you're going to be a professional athlete then who cares if you don't know how many states there are in the country you've lived in your entire life, as long as you're a great athlete, that's all that matters.
Those Chargers teams had some ballerz. Ronnie Harmon, Qadry Ismael, Billy Joe Tolliver, John Carney, Martin Bayless. It’s a damn shame they never lived up to the numbers they could produce in the video games.
I don't think he lacked the intelligence to learn that Hawaii was a state. Falls into the ignorance category more. I mean, I'd say like 7/10 Americans don't know that Puerto Ricans are free to travel anywhere in America without a passport. Because... they are American...
@pyrotempestwing Absolutely, I love my fellow Americans from Guam. Funny, not funny story... lifetime ago in basic training at Ft. Benning (not Ft. Moore?) I fella took a bad injury. Couldn't go further on unfortunately. The army and their great wisdom first only offered a bus ride home... uff da...
@@thomasj3701Oh, yes! Hats off to “the pinheads at the Pentagon who have more points on their heads than the building they work in”, as Col. Potter (Harry Morgan) in “M*A*S*H” would call them.

Marion Butts was still a bad, bad boy. He had the power game of Earl Campbell with a slightly bulkier frame on a more than capable engine, not quite a ferrari or corvette but maybe something like a T-Bird or Mustang.
We need wakko's america song updated for the US territories too. Some people and even companies (cough spirt airlines cough) still do not realize Puerto Rico is the US Commonwealth

These things happen sadly only in the US educational system. Specially public school, with all that said do recall him wasnt he a baby beast in Madden 91?
To be fair, he might have simply meant that he wanted to stay in the CONTIGUOUS states. And "exotic" can also refer to something out of the ordinary; it doesn't necessarily mean "from a different country."
Hawai'i is an exotic locale but its in the US...maybe he didnt wanted to fly across the Pacific Ocean 56 years ago, on December 13, 1967, measurable snow fell in San Diego, the last time it happened.
You'd be surprised, or not, how many people who don't know Hawaii is a state. it seems like he was saying he didn't want to go an exotic area. Remember one thing also he could have old text books growing up and in college got pushed through. It could have been his education I have heard schools in the 80s have really old text books.
He's not wrong and he isnt a moron. Hawaii is more of an occupied kingdom than it is a state. It belongs to the Hawaiian natives that had its government overthrown so it can be colonized by the Americans and eventually turned into a state. There's separatist movements trying to reclaim the Kingdom of Hawaii.
The pro bowl today is exactly what it should be. Played the week before the Super Bowl. And not real football. These players are getting paid too much to risk injury in a game that is completely and totally meaningless.

To be fair to Mr. Butts, (and I hate to be fair to Chargers) while Hawaii is obviously a state, you stated part of the definition of exotic as “…characteristic of a distant foreign country.” While it is not a foreign country, the argument could be made that it is “characteristic” of a foreign country as nowhere else in the country shares its geographical or specific cultural characteristics. Harping on a guy for a dumb thing he said almost 40 years ago is pretty weak. I feel dumber for having watched this.

@matthewdaley746 college is stupid, who cares
I mean the stereotype of people with the iq of a brick at university exists for a reason
Former Washington Redskin Dexter Manley could not read and was illiterate during his college days. Every school level plus college..
RB James Brooks was asked why he chose Auburn over Georgia and as a resident of Georgia, his reply was thag he wanted to stay in state. 😅
He scored a touchdown versus the Raiders and across the P.A. system came “I like big Butts and I cannot lie”…awesome

Whenever i think about the Chargers, the first player that always pops into my head is Chuck Muncie. What a fantastic running back he was.
He died, from drug abuse. :(
Hawaii is definitely exotic compared to the other states.
Not going to lie, I still call them the San Diego Chargers.
James Brooks, 4 time Pro Bowl RB for the Bengals, was asked by a judge how he graduated from Auburn without being able to read. His answer was that he didn't have to go to class.
What? A football player from the SEC not going to class.... shocked I tell you
I just remember playing against the Chargers in Tecmo Super Bowl in the playoffs, Marion Butts brutalized my defense 😢
Most of us learned about the 50 states in grade school.
Hawaii had been a state for 31 years at that point.
The Pro Bowl is a shell of what it used to be. I heard that over the years, the game was losing money. They need to return to playing the actual game.
The last notable time when San Diego had snow was back in December of 1967
Hawaii is a state, but I'd also call it exotic in many ways
By definition, it is not. Not for someone living in the states.
