Are Teenagers Keeping Vinyl Records Alive?

  • There's no question the Internet opened up a whole new world of music consumption - first there were mp3 downloads, now there's a multitude of streaming music services like Spotify, Pandora, and Tidal. Digital distribution is now a dominating force in the industry. Yet something unexpected has been happening with vinyl records over the past decade - they've actually been on the rise. Nielson says vinyl record sales have steadily grown over the past ten years. And according to the RIAA, 2015 vinyl sales reached their highest level since 1988. Conventional wisdom says nostalgic baby boomers and Gen Xers are keeping this outdated format alive, but a growing number of younger fans are buying records now, too. In fact, MusicWatch reported that half of all record buyers in 2015 were under 25 years old. One of them is 16-year old-Adia Douglas - a vinyl enthusiast who just opened up her own record store in the San Francisco Bay Area. Adia was born in the digital age but was influenced by her father, a musician and longtime record collector himself. After noticing boxes of records in their home that weren't being played, Adia convinced her parents to let her open up a little shop to sell new and used vinyl. Now she's there most days after school, selling records to customers who are sometimes younger than she is.

    I think there are 2 kinds of teenagers who listen to vinyl, the actual music lover who invest a lot of time and effort into her collection and the other is the hipster paying 25 bucks for a record in horrible condition, playing it on a Crosley than post to instagram how good he is. I can't hate them though because all of the people buying vinyl help to keep non-digital music alive. Btw the girl in the vid is lovely :D

    For me vinyl never went away, still collecting after 4 decades. No way is digital technology going to replace my collection. There just isn't any value in bits of data stored on some device. Vinyl is the total package, tangible and physical art work as well as product you can put your hands on.

    • @leDespicable
      @leDespicable 4 года назад

      Digital isn't going to replace physical mediums anyway as long as there's no streaming service that offers every song in the world. There's just too many soundtracks and indie songs that you can't find on RUclips or Spotify.

    • @olivierlazure1

      @@heckicusdoomicuswizardus1382 CDs are not the same at all. With Vinyl, you get giant cover art and big discs that you have to turn around when you're at around half the album. No other form of music medium has this level of interaction. It's not about being cool, it's about forcing yourself to listen only to one album at a time and focusing on it completely with no distractions.
      And, when I go to record stores, the store owner or employee plays their own vinyl, and I discover more music that way. I can also ask them for recommendations or even just flipping through all their records, I can find some very good stuff. Last place I went to, I flipped through hundreds of records and managed to find some great ones for less than 10$, one of them as low as 2$, which is a popular album. They are all used but that is the best way to enjoy this medium in the most part because it is going to be too expensive otherwise. For the albums I love which are too rare to find used, I don't mind getting them new though.

    My 29 year old son bought a record player from the goodwill and figured out how to listen to it with a special cable attached to the speakers of a cd player/radio. Some guy at work brings records he sells to my son from his car. I bought him a Santana Album years ago for the album cover. My son has a small collection of Santana records. I mostly listen to the soundcloud app. The radio station kalx seems to have a vinyl collection. I heard one of the djs say the new vinyl they were playing was pink.

  • @metabeard3788

    DJing got me into buying records. The internet has certainly made that easy. I've probably bought 3/4 of my records through the internet. Personally I'm not so sure the sound quality is really all that different, but I enjoy the interaction with the medium, the sleeve artwork. Really, I just enjoy getting my hands on something rather than spending even more time staring at a screen.
    Lots of folks in the comments firing off about "hipsters", but really who cares? I don't get it, do you criticize kids for spending all their time on their phones, but then criticize them for getting out and socializing at a record store and interacting with a physical medium of music? How should kids act? Seems like a bunch of old farts hating on kids not being exactly like them.

    Anyone who says it sounds different is wrong. What people really look for in buying records is developing a collection and getting art work. People like records because they're inconvenient and you have to play through the full LP because skipping to specific songs is tedious. This is all theoretical. Yes, vinyl has a physical limitation to how good it can sound, because it has only so much space for grooves and we only press to so much precision. But its all theoretical. The best quality vinyl verse the best quality digital, most couldn't tell the difference. Digital audio is theoretically limitless but the vast majority doesn't even get close to what its capable of and thats what the masses get on iTunes, Spotify and RUclips. Even CD is physically limiting how good the audio can be because of its encoding standard. Obviously vinyl is uncompressed, and it should be using different masters so its not subject to the loudness wars. It objectively has a different sound. Yeah, its more inconvenient, but nobody picks up vinyl because they want the inconvenience. They pick up vinyl because they want music that engages the senses. High quality music, listening to music you'd otherwise skip on Spotify, finding albums you wouldn't search for, having the album art, photos, liner notes etc.

      Cameron Lawson Yeah... But no - get a good FLAC format song and some very good headphones and it will sound better than vinyl records. Most studios butcher the songs on digital format to make them sound louder and thus they destroy any good quality it might have, but if it's not butchered - digital songs sound as good if not better than vinyls

Well after listening to mine for about 4 years because it was convenient I went back to pulling out my CDs as I took a whole new interest in them. Now I am doing the same thing with vinyl albums and this is the format I grew up listening to and it sounds great all over again. Anyway back to you and good luck with your record store and keep the music alive and don't let the negative comments ruin your spirit, Keep it going!

    Started out on vinyl and cassettes as a kid. Fell for CD's when they came out. My vinyl was dormant for about 20 years and then one day I just got back into it about 10 or 15 years ago for the better sound, and I'm going very strong with it. I actually enjoy my vinyl collection much more today than I did in the past, because I now know how to clean, maintain, and store vinyl better. The sound quality is just better than any other format and who can resist the wonderful album art and tweaking your sound system to get the best sound? I love some of the new reissues with their deluxe remastering, packaging, and treatment. Both new and used vinyl have me hooked for life.

      It's not just about sound quality, though. Music has become so cheap, with songs being downloadable for $0.99 or even steamed online for free. Records, on the other hand, are heavy. They're expensive. They're tangible. They require sacrifice to acquire. When you buy a record, you're making an investment and displaying your loyalty to the band.

    • @mouykhshabon
      @mouykhshabon 8 лет назад +1

      Seth Moore There are *also* other ways to invest and show loyalty to artists. Labels are welcome to sell higher quality say 24bits 192KHz lossless audio at higher price. This can be purchased physically or downloaded. Either ways it will remedy the issues that comes with vinyls and provide better quality audio and in the same way support artists.

    I mean the fact that FYE, Barnes & Noble, Urban Outfitters, Books a Million & other places are selling vinyl records is showing that it's growing. I remember Barnes & noble use to only have a small section of records & it was mostly Lana Del Rey & popular albums that came out. I also remember Best Buy had a small section behind the CDs & I thought it was so cool, because Best Buy was the only place I knew where to get them at the time. Sadly Best Buy doesn't carry them in the store anymore, but I know a lot of places closer to me that Carry's old & new records. It's kind of awesome because now it's more easier for people to get them.

    Represses being more expensive and usually shittier in quality compared to originals is the biggest issue I see. Represses would be a great way to support the artists through album purchases again, and I do buy them, but since it's not guaranteed it's a good pressing these days, more and more often I just get the original pressing (out of the last 6 LPs I've gotten, only 2 were recent represses bought from retail).

    Young people should be encouraged and applauded for taking an interest in something and investing in something that has a physical/emotional value and for improving sales of real records rather than downloading free digital throwaways. It warms the heart to see them buying into older records too and maybe this generation are not totally lost afterall and will learn to value things and good music old and new. Yes they should be guided in the right direction in terms of equipment but that is a seperate argument. There were crap record players 30 years ago too. Just like there were crap CD players and there are crap cars on the road. Other older generations used crap equipment too. So slap yourselves hard across the face for knocking this and rejoice that records are making a comeback. There is very little positivity in the world right now but this is positive.

    From my era when I was young of records really just being another of several medias to buy music on to this era that I think really sees the nostalgia of the whole thing. We didn't have a hi end system growing up. We just had a Sears combo of turntable, stereo and 8 trac. But I remember going to an audio store, still in business, and seeing all the impressive stereo stacks. I think people like the nostalgia of the old stereos systems also that helps fuel the record industry. But really, the progression isn't any different than when I was younger. It's always been tailored around convenience. I remember 8trac tapes, and records. Then it morphed into cassettes from 8 tracs then from cassettes to discs. Discs went through the same progression records did. No one wanted to lug heavy records around that were in general fragile, same for discs. Then came the digital age of downloads and then into streaming. But the nostalgia of records will always be there. There are many different reasons depending on the individual really. For some it's the sound, others it's a physical thing, others it's hunting for that lost gem or just a hobby. For me, it reintroduced me back to my youth and reminded me of all the bands and artists I forgot about. I love the hunt for records. I also find some good bands I never heard of but are really good. Just a fun hobby.

  • @DennyDormant
    @DennyDormant 8 лет назад +14

    I don't know comparing the quality between your computer to a record player? How about you get an actual stereo system and then compare? Also, I couldn't relate to this. I have no experience with records and probably never will. I am very happy we live in a time where I can simply download music off the internet as I would never be able to listen to great classics like Carl Orff's Carmina Burana.
    But I guess I don't care about records either as I never gravitated towards that era of music either.

    To be honest growing up on wax most of my younger years once the 90’s hit in my opinion it was the club culture that kept vinyl going through those years until digital gear started dominating and the older DJ’s Producers were slowly getting replaced by the younger millennials coming along, but I’m sure it was House, Techno, and of course Hip Hop that kept pressing plants open. So the teens now definitely owe the DJ culture some thanks for preserving wax and keeping it relevant.

    I got into vinyl by buying a girlfriend some records and a player about 9 years ago. I have a CD collection more or less around 900ish and I noticed that records were cheaper at the time. So I bought myself a record player and started collecting records. I mainly bought 80s records because they were dirt cheap. Since then the price of records have gone up. Less than 20% of my records are brand new. The bulk of my collection I got for less than $5 a pop, mainly $1 to $2 per records. I have more than 200 12-inch records, about a dozen or so 10-inch and odd shaped records and more than 200 7-inch records. They are fun but the old school problems of the weight and only being able to really listen to them in one place comes up.
