The fact that this audience was horrified by Olive’s choreography when they dress their little girls in such provocative outfits and paint their cute little face is so hypocritical!
I love this movie so much. Thank you for doing such a genuine review.
That was the point.
I was too focused on Olive’s performance during the scene and the family’s reaction to notice that hypocrisy, but that is a great point. I’m disappointed I missed it
@@summerrose8110right. So this person wanted to mention it. Get over it.
Somehow all the cringe and creepiness culminates in one of the most wholesome endings I've ever seen. I really adore this film, especially Steve Carell and Paul Dano's performances.
It shows that no matter how broken a family can be, we all have a moment where we are reminded that besides everything wrong in our lives, we are still a family that will always have each other’s back
It makes my heart swell
One of my favorites of all time. And yes, Paul Dano and Steve Carrell are peak. But so are Toni Collette and Abigrail Breslin! Hell the entire cast is amazing.
Apparently this movie was inspired by a speech Arnold Schwarzenegger gave to a group of high schoolers, telling them he despises losers. The screenwriter thought that was such horrible advice. I think deep down this movie is about setting your own standards for "winning," instead of worrying about whether you're a loser or not. Be yourself. Fuck the haters.
Funny thing is.. there are no winners or looser in life, since the winning prize at the end is the same for everyone.
Olive giving her brother a hug with no words needed breaks me every time. Such a great movie 🙌
@@abducteeofearth1703 Yep!
Indeed. Providing that emotional support is all that is needed at the end of the day. But of course, if the person requests something else, you can help with that too.
Can we just acknowledge the fact that that VW van is one of the funniest characters in this film? That stuck horn is absolutely hilarious. Just brilliant.
I had a 1973 VW Squareback that actually had that same horn malfunction (an electrical short in the horn button) so I freaking died when that came up in the movie.
Its also a huge visual metaphor for the entire family and concept of family... its annoying, broken and all they have but it gets them where they need to be.
My father RIP was a collector VWs and had 3 vans in his life. One of them the horn got stuck like that lol😂 it happens!
@@cripplermaximus yep, happened to my dad lol
@@jeffinspace7668 one of my friends and i still talk about the time i was cruising around the mall and hit a speed bumping, which made the horn go haywire as this group of cholos walked in front of us. lol. it was 20 years ago lol
I love how proud miss California looks when Olive does her performance with her family. Such a. Good person
Fun Fact: Creepy guy was actually a long suffering beauty queen Dad, not a random dude watching kids in swimsuits.
I'll also add that I love that Olive is basically the glue for the family. Everything is going to hell, but her optimism and gentle spirit pulls everyone up when they need it most. I mean notice how she is the only one that Dwayne doesn't lash out at when he snaps and she's the one who gets him back to the van with a simple hug. Damnit, who's cutting onions.
So glad you guys reacted to this movie. It doesn't get the attention it deserves. So well written, such great actors, so funny, so much love. I'm glad you watched this film.
Ok thank god! I thought for years that he was a paedophile, but it's painfully obvious that the host is.
Olive is just trying to chase her dreams the same way her big brother is trying to chase his which is I think something he can connect on. And she is so young and such a nice kid it's hard to blame her for anything, she's just a passenger in this chaos 😆
I've seen idiot reactors call the biker dad a pedo and it's annoying. If anyone is a pedophile it's that emcee guy who is way too into all those kids dressed like grown women. Disgusting.
I definitely got overtaken by cringe as a kid watching this movie. As an adult I find it absolutely charming and beautiful. I cry at the end and when the brother realizes he can’t be a pilot. And I’m proud of it.
I loved how Olive’s controversial dance was so much more wholesome and innocent than the grotesque and creepy way the other little girls were dressed up. No matter the song or stripper moves Olive was a kid having fun.
Fun Fact: Alan Arkin (the grandpa) won a Oscarr for this role and Abigail Breslin (Oliver) was nominated for best supporting role in the Oscar's for this movie as well
It’s obviously impactful by itself that Dwayne’s dream was crushed when he found out he was color blind, but the fact that he hadn’t spoken for nine months (or at any point in the movie up until now) and the first thing he said was just a raw expression of his pain and rage made it so much more impactful. Paul Dano was such an MVP in this movie imo.
The dance scene is always my favorite. Them just having fun not caring about what anyone thinks.
“Ok everybody, pretend to be normal”!
Underrated movie quote lol
The scene where he learns he will NEVER be allowed to fly, due to his color blindness is 👌.
yeah and also his later acceptance that just because he couldn't follow his original plan, there were still alternative ways to make his passions a hobby - instead of being in the military, he could still fly personal aircrafts, drones, etc.
Watching and loving Paul Dano in this when it came out, and seeing what he’s done in later movies, makes me happy. What a cool guy and great actor.
agreed, I was lucky enough to see this on opening as well, he probably has the best, most intense performance in this film and is a kid. However the performance I enjoy the most is the GOAT Allan A
He’s married to Zoe Kazan and they are both in a cute movie Ruby Sparks…like them both!!
@@KrissyFace just saw her in She Said. She was good in that as well.
I had forgotten he was in this when I saw him in The Batman. Great performance there too. His angered screams at Batman are *so* well done. Reminds me of his first spoken words in this movie. That fuck and scream is so raw.
@@brianburkhardt3692 he’s great in The Fabelman’s and Love and Mercy too.
"A loser is so afraid of not winning they don't even try."
I love Steve Carell's performance in this. It was actually the first time he played a dramatic role, and during filming he was not yet the huge movie star he was about to become due to the release of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin".
This film has so much heart and sweetness in it while being a rated R comedy. It's hard to balance those tones but this film did it so well. Great casting choices, great acting, great sound design and soundtrack, great screenplay. Just really well done. Never gets old.
I love this movie, I wish more people would react to it!
Same, I used to watch this all the time when I was younger.
Such a great movie!
agree, very few reactions on YT on this movie somehow, but it's great!
My all time favorite movie, it never fails to lift my spirits.
Same! It's the perfect movie for when you're feeling extremely down. And I didn't notice this until my most recent viewing: by the end of the movie, each character ends up in a conventionally worse spot than they were in at the beginning of the movie (pageant-obsessed Olive can't participate in California, Dwayne finds out he can't be in the Air Force, Richard's program is done, the family is bankrupt, etc...), but together, they're all far better than they ever were.
writes: but I'm not having any fun. "I think we're all with you on that one Dwayne." LOL. Love this movie.
Olive's dance performance was honest compared to the other contestants.
My daughters and I were watching this movie in a really nice hotel room. We were laughing so hard at the dance scene that someone called the front desk to report us...haha.
I’ve seen it multiple times -mostly around the time it released- and just now watching this clipped version had me cackling. Probably not unlike you and your daughters. What a wholesome moment! :)
The dance scene at the end is the highlight of the movie for me. 😂😂 I haven't seen this movie in so long I forgot how underrated and overlooked it was.
Little Miss Sunshine and Crazy, Stupid, Love are my two favorite Steve Carell movies. So glad you reacted to this.
Have you watched "Dan in Real Life"? Excellent movie, too!
@@madmandan1982 I still need to watch it
Abigail Breslin stripping on stage to 'Superfreak' at one of these abhorrent pageants is a seminal moment in cinematic history.
Olive was nominated for a Oscar for this movie she did a great job
Rightfully so! She was so good and especially for her age. That moment when she asks her Grandpa if she's pretty and then talks about not wanting to be a loser breaks your heart! You really felt that she feared that her dad would hate her if she lost and it was so tragic, it just makes you so happy in the end with Richard's development.
What a freakin’ cast. And the underrated performance award is for Kinnear. Overshadowed a bit by everyone else but spot on perfect.
This movie is an example on how to create a masterpiece with very low budget. Very touching comedy with some dark elements(as life is)
“Good talk you’re not nearly as stupid as you look” my favourite line of any movie lmfao
The part when olive went to go give Dwayne a hug really made me cry bc it reminded me of me and my brother and I really like the fact that his deciding factor to go with them was his little sister and that just warms my heart ❤️
This is my favorite Steve Carell role. This movie has so much heart, I can't help but love every second of it.
Such a great movie that also really highlights the weird pageant culture. I've been to a few (my goddaughter did it for a year) and there's nothing weirder than seeing 5 year olds in fake hair, fake eyelashes, spray tans, and flippers (snap in dentures to hide their baby teeth). A lot of parents will take out mortgages, loans, and all kinds of debt for their kid to win. It's insane.
The weird emcee guy in the pageant really underplayed it; most of those guys have so much Botox that they look like their face is frozen in some rictus like grin. They all do the singing thing at the girls over the shoulder, and I don't know why.
Also, Greg Kinnear is an underrated actor. He was so good in "Auto Focus," as the late actor Bob Crane.
Paul Dano man. He has to win an Oscar this year. Playing The Riddler and Spielberg’s dad is superb range.
There's also the metaphor of the van that has to be going downhill for it to start.
It's like the Winston Churchill quote, "If you're going through hell, keep going."
when rewatching it this time from your reaction, I realized that, originally as a viewer I thought Olive had to succeed to make the whole trip worth it. I wasn't mad about the ending, but was like "awe". but this time, I realized that the fact that everyone at one point in the film failed. And for the final act, it was Olive's turn to fail and for her family to be there to support her through it like she was for them.
One of my favorite movies. Went to see it having no preconceptions or knowing what it was about, and walked out feeling on top of the world.
The part when they left Olive at the gas station gave me memories when my parents and sisters almost left me at a Wendy's
Aw I’m glad I found this reaction. Little Miss Sunshine is such a solid movie to watch every now and again.
Finally! You have no idea how long I’ve waited for this to be reacted to!! This movie is comedy GOLD!
When Dwayne finds out he’s colour blind.. that scene breaks me every time 😢
I'm glad this finally won the poll. Despite being an Oscar winning movie (Best Screen Play, Alan Arkin) its still an underdog. I knew you guys would find it hilarious. Shining a light on how creepy pageants are by using Frank, Dwayne and Richard looking at what's going on and being horrified, like us watching, was genius.
when you realize that Edwin probably taught Olive a stripper routine, it makes her dance scene even more iconic 😂
I saw this movie when it first came out and I absolutely loved it. FYI Abigail wore padding because they needed her to be a little bigger.
One of my sayings: "If you can't have fun, what CAN you have? And it IS a choice!"
Thanks for another great reaction
Paul dano is freaking amazing in all his movies this is no exception
Nominated for 3 Oscars including Best Picture but won for
Best Original Screenplay Michael Arndt
Best Supporting Actor Alan Arkin.
A dysfunctional family takes their youngest daughter to a talent show competition in California but not everything goes according to plan.
Maybe my favorite movie, and maybe the only family dysfunction road-trip-from-hell movie that's positively joyous and life-affirming. The constant theme of pushing the bus is the perfect metaphor for the family's shared burdens; impossible to do alone, but together not only can they persevere, they can even laugh along the way.
So many scenes still got me crying with laughter years later: 😂
"Not just one woman, a lot of women."
"I still got Nazi bullets in my ass!"
- the hospital escape -
- the broken horn -
"are you authorized to be backstage?" *no*
31:42 I loved that Miss California enjoyed the routine too, such an underrated detail. 😂
22:33 just remember this is one of Paul Dano's first films so when thos came out this is the first time most of the audience heard his voice.
I'd never thought about how those were the last words of the grandpa to the various family members, I'm glad you guys pointed that out!
I might be wrong, but this is a rare movie that was filmed in chronological order. What a great film.
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one thinking the announcer was creepy lol
Such a great film. I saw it in the theater when it came out. Packed house. When Olive walked out on that stage, and Rick James SUPERFREAK started playing, the entire theater went up in a roar of laughter, some claps and some “Yessss!!” and “Oh my God!”s 😂it was one of those rare moments in a movie, where it’s just magic. Pure magic. And every one of us in that theater was all the way in.
It’s a terrific film; Stellar cast, great script, and it marks the discovery of Abigail Breslin, who was so incredibly natural, real and at times heartbreaking, as the endearing Olive; she played it straight from the heart, in her very first role. She’s grown now. And is still a great actress (loved her in Scream Queens). But she’ll forever be our Little Miss Sunshine. ♥️
The one thing I thought was great and appreciate every time, is that all of Olive's outfits in the pageant were child appropriate. Even the bathing suit. Not covered in makeup, hairspray or tons of skin showing. I would support child pageants if these were the requirements. Unfortunately, that's not the case.
Rest in peace, Alan. Such a good movie.
I loved this movie, in the deleted scenes they actually steal one of the trophies (wish they would have included it in the movie).
I forgot that was a deleted scene, I remembered it being in the film. Wish it was, honestly.
The thing about the dance routine is that from Olive’s point of view, it’s just playful fun that her grandpa showed her. She has no idea about the sexual nature and how really inappropriate it is.
What's not to love?
...and the horn is the perfect punctuation point.
This movie goes to my top 10 of all times. It has everything: the message, casting, warmth, wisdom and top tier humor. I love this so much.
What’s your top ten?
Olive comforting her brother gets me every time.
I consider this movie to be 100% Canon with the Breaking Bad Universe and Malcolm in the Middle.
Yes one of my all time favorite films. This is how I got into Paul Dano-a great actor even then.
The dude at 33:04 is my hero because he's been wanting something different and real probably every time lmao.
sending y'all the hugest virtual hugs for doing this movie!! it's one of my absolute favorites and i'm so glad i can watch with you all. it's such a healing movie. there's actually a pretty good video essay here on youtube about why it's so healing even if it doesn't have the perfect happy ending. thank you for doing this one and i hope y'all are doing well and having a good week
"Every night it's the f*****g chicken! Holy God Almighty! Is it possible just once we could get something to eat for dinner around here that's not the goddamned f*****g chicken???"
-Grandpa kills me, the van is another star of the movie.
Totally agree those pageants should be outlawed. so creepy and weird. I won a couple baby beauty pageants as a kid but that was just me being a baby and they judged who was the cutest. Then my mom got like. some money and free formula for a year or something and a trophy.
i used to have a poster for this movie but it was stolen 😩 the dance scene always reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite
Your expressions during the pageant of the movies are so satisfying and hilarious :)
omg yes that's one of my childhood movie
this movie always make me nostalgic and sad for some reason but also so light and happy at the end it's weird
it's just a feel good movie even if some parts are tough is still a really sweet movie
The best part about this movie is the dad coming around in about 0.2 seconds of witnessing a child pageant that they're the most disgusting evil thing
This is one of my favourite movies. I saw it when it came out back in high school, and I LOVE watching people's first viewing. Your video was amazing!
Your faces during the pageant. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is one of my favorite movies!! So glad to finally see you two react to it. The dance scene is iconic 🤣 love you Chris and Curtis
This movie is such a gem of a film. Funny, touching, and so well acted.
Such a great surprise to see this reaction from you guys!!!! Thank you for sharing! So many amazing scenes in this film - the ice cream scene, the Grandpa's final speech to Olive, Paul Dano's realization that he's colorblind (always makes my stomach drop) and of course the final dance scene (makes me tear up every time, seeing them all as a family)! So good!
one of my all-time favorites
I had forgotten this jewel. Loved your reactions. You can't help but run the entire gamut of emotions watching Little Miss Sunshine.
This is one of my favorite movies. It's so sweet, crazy and real. LOVE IT! Thanks for this great reaction!
I love you guys. You're smart and funny. You recognize and call out creepiness; more men are beginning to, but there are still too many (not to mention kiddie beauty pageant moms) who don't. You appreciate the sweet moments as much as the action. Your post-movie analyses are lucid and humane. Again, love you guys!
You guys are great reactors! I love that you react to a lot of films that other people don't. Hopefully one day you guys will react to Coming of Age Classics like 1983 "The Outsiders" and 1978 "The Bad News Bears".
YES! I won I won I won! Thank you guys for watching this movie! 😀
Your faces during the contest are priceless! 😆 you're the best
A real winner has figured out that for every win there are at least 9 losses... but they aren't losses they are LESSONS. The point is to stick to it and never give up; just learn from the losses and adjust the plan until it succeeds!
I've been suggesting this movie forever, it's one of the best! This, The Way Way Back (Steve Carell, Toni Collette (mom in this), Sam Rockwell) and The Peanut Butter Falcon are so underrated and forgotten. One of the most wholesome endings and morals to a movie ever
This is one of my favorite movies. I’m so glad you both felt the same way
I forgot how great this movie is! All start performances by every single
Classic is all I got to say
I adore this movie, and really enjoyed your reaction. Saw it in a theater when it came out, just loved it. A fantastic small film, and Alan Arkin, as always, was a master.
You guys are the best. Thanks for watching a movie with an old grandma. ❤️
i've watched documentaries on child beauty pagents before and i remember this one woman that had a little boy that would do beauty pagents and they would give him puberty blockers to try and keep him small enough to stay in the toddler pagents. it was so weird and full of child abuse
Jeez, people do anything for money they let their children suffer just to get it. How sick.
Everybody put in a powerhouse performance in this one.
One of the most beautiful movies with a perfect cast!
Richard being a failure of a motivational speaker is so so so so good. Lololol
Hey guys - would you ever consider reviewing the films “La La Land” and “Les yeux sans visage”?
I love this movie so much. I forgot most of the things about the character of Olives brother, but I remembered that this is when I fell in love with Paul dano
I had forgotten how much hilarious moments as well as incredibly meaningful moments this movie had, I haven't seen it in... forever, I should seriously rewatch this entirely. Thanks so much for this one!
The thing that is great is where the family is at the start to where they are at the end.
This is a wild and fun, crazy movie. Your reaction to the child beauty pageant was exactly right.
I love and appreciate so much that you guys are doing the movies that most others don't do but are still worthy (if not more) of a review
the movie is pure gold. the Soundtrack is so amazing. Its how it ends by Devotchka and other songs of them. Its an overwhelming and magic song.
I looove this movie! Thank you guys
