    I strongly suspect this truck and trailer combination would have performed identically with just about any hitch. The trailer is small enough that it just isn’t stressing the truck at all even with the wind. I do see a negative to the extra length here. Because you haven’t changed the geometry of the connection with this hitch that extra length means that it’s likely to be worse at sway control because you now have a longer moment arm pushing on the truck when the trailer sways.

    You hit the nail on the head when talking about the weight of the cargo and people. I hear folks say all the time, why get a 3/4 ton when my 1/2 ton tows 11k or 12 k. Most 1/2 tons are maxed out with a small trailer, a full toolbox and 4 grown adults. I decided a long time ago that a 1/2 ton was worthless for me. Fine for folks that never tow or just use the truck for hauling light stuff but I’d rather have more truck than I need then need more truck than I have.

    Great advice. My dad said the same thing, to give gas, and pull the trailer brake. Definitely felt sway on last trip, but it was mostly because we over packed the trailer and was not distributed as well in the camper. After pulling over and checking my wife's work, I just moved everything inside to be better centered. Way better.

    I got one of these hitches last week for my 2019 F150 Raptor and a open vehicle trailer. I figured the expense was especially worthwhile for a truck like mine that doesn’t have a huge payload capacity. I was amazed that once set up the truck went back to almost level. I like the peace of mind that comes from knowing everything is within designed parameters

    Just bought this for my 27 foot toyhauler. Was suprised to find my tounge weight was 1,600 hundred pounds on an 8,500 trrailer. When I do not have any toys in there. Use this for a lot of regular camping on top of taking the razor out. Realized I cannot have my gray and black water tanks full. Also had 200 pounds stored in the front storage compartment that I have now moved to the back. Loosing that weight and using the weight distribution got me close to level.

      I have this hitch setup. I have a 2011 Silverado 2500HD that's lifted 8" on 37" tires. My toy Hauler is a 2013 Fuzion 300 and weighs just under 9K lbs. dry weight, @ 35 feet in length. This hitch is phenomenal. It makes setting your trailer a breeze and knowing what your actual tongue weight is, is a great bit of information. No sway or front end bounce when towing.

      I tow a 2021 palomino Solaire 243bhs and it’s 27” from pin to tail. The weigh safe works great. It’s easy to hook and easy to unhook. I leave the bars attached to the receiver and just fold them towards the truck. Save a lot of back breaking and makes it much faster.

    I love this hitch. They did a great job with it. Doubt I will make the investment to upgrade at this point, but I like it a lot. Currently have the Husky set up which is pretty basic, but seems to work ok. I also don’t need the exotic weight distribution with the 2017 f350 and my trailer set up.

    Like I said in your video when you received this hitch. I can't wait until you install it. I was so excited to watch these 2 videos. You answered most of my questions about how we installed ours and how we use it. I was very happy to see that we installed ours just like you did. I still have one Big question. What if the app tells you to set the the distribution weight to something higher than the distribution tongue weight on the sticker of the underneath of the hitch on the truck? This was a question I am also planning on taking to Weight Safe about.

  • @charlescrain2726
    @charlescrain2726 3 года назад +3

    You really should have CAT scaled the set up. The setting of the hitch weight to 1300# was very confusing until you pointed out that the weight was being transferred to the front axle of the truck. However, your estimate of 600# on the hitch should have been confirmed with a CAT scale measurement of all axles and all weights. That way the story would have been complete. But thanks for the video. Installing one of these things is NOT simple...BTW - what happens when you load the trailer and the truck to actually go somewhere? It would be interesting to see the adjustments that need to be made to the hitch and then do a complete CAT scale to see what the final numbers are. Just a thought...

    I agree with safety first, please remember not all half ton has the same tow capabilities. This one you guys have is 3 years old. I own a new half a ton with bigger brakes sistem, bigger engine and better transmission 10 speed. This you said is capable of pulling 11,000 lbs, the one I own with the advantage tow package 📦 is ratings for 15,000 lbs and longer wheel bases . I also own 3/4 tons, one ton, Don't matter which equipment you drive always needs the ability and experience and expertise to understand that always safety first. Always make sure you has the right tires. This new half ton they really are 2/4 ton, I respect everyone opinión, Thank you always for your excellent advice. 🙏

    • @peterdang9475
      @peterdang9475 3 года назад +1

      1/2 = 2/4 do you mean the new 1/2 tons are like the old 3/4 tons of the past? I would disagree since the payload of the old 3/4 ton trucks are higher than the new 1/2 ton trucks but 1/2 ton trucks have come a long way.

    • @franciscodomenech1922
      @franciscodomenech1922 3 года назад

      I just mentioned the new specification from the manufacturer, this number are from factory 🏭 .I feel very comfortable pulling safe with a new 2/4 tons they're capable, bigger brakes, more transmission torque, engine horse 🐎 power. I have friends with those all 3/4 tons, and they makes comments that they have to add air suspension because they are weak. They are different new 3/4 tons, not all are the same with differents towing power. I understand is are disagree, this is from factory 🏭

    Any concern with the leverage this hitch would put on the receiver with a heavy trailer and tongue weight?

  • @briant2045
    @briant2045 3 года назад +4

    Big safety issue. The way you extended the safety chains and have them hooked risks loading the gates of the hook especially on the driver side. The gate is the weakest point of those hooks and must never be loaded, should the trailer become disconnected for any reason while under way you have set up the hook to be a failure point and this is not safe.

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  3 года назад +1

      Keep in mind that the loops were also connected at an equal length section of chain, which means that the chain hooks would be at full tension before the gates of the hook would give. There is a greater likelihood of the vehicles chain mounts breaking before the setup we used failing.

  • @hisimagenme

    I have two questions - newbie here - why didn't you measure the weight with the chains? Those are heavy. And isn't ground clearance with that hitch part with the ball on it a concern? A good pot hole and seems to me the thing would hit the ground. It's one thing to clear your tail gate which isn't absolutely nessessary but hitting that on the ground would jack up the whole system wouldn't it? Oops that's 3 questions - sorry.

  • @TjBruce817

    The dealer ships, RV and Truck dealers, will tell you anything to move a vehicle. You have to do your own homework. This hitch seems to be the best one in the class and worth the extra ya have to fork out for it over the Curt/Blue OX/Reese/Equalizer version. Nice look at it.. thanks 👍

    I have to wonder what a tire blow out would feel on a single axle at 60MPH. I really like the little trailer but there's trailers (Winnebago Micro Minnie) that weigh the same but have double torflex axles that give a huge weight CCC to the trailer. I would really consider this hitch for any trailer I bought though. I wonder how having the trailer sitting further back would increase or decrease the trailers leverage in a sway situation. They did bring up a great point about increasing speed "a touch" to get out of a sway. 40 years ago when I was being taught how to drive semi trucks in the winter we were told to "take" control of the trailer when going into a jack knife situation by using the tractors hand brake for the trailer while giving the tractor a little gas to straighten things out. It works, I pulled everything from 28ft to 53 ft trailers......never jack knifed all the way. There were a couple of times I could see the side of the trailer in the mirror but the give fuel and give trailer brake prevented a bad situation.

I think it may have been worthwhile to baseline the trailer tongue weight using the eTrailer scale you use in your other videos just for comparison purposes. I have an Equalizer that has served us well but no real on the fly adjustability is a huge deal.

    I bought one of these hitches. I have less than 100 miles on it and one side is wearing heavily where the spring bar pivots at the hitch. Did you notice any extreme wear with your setup? The manufacturer told me it's normal, but it's a greased surface and no other friction point has any visible wear, greased or dry. It's just these two greased surfaces that are grinding into each other rapidly wearing away the metal after just one short trip. I put some pictures of the problem on irv2. User name primemover.

    At the camp sites, I usually take the hitch off and lock it into a small receiver I mounted on the Rv rear bumper. I will take it apart (draw bar and hitch head). Since it it heavy, I am using a steel rod in the holes on the draw bar. It will hold the hitch head about where I need it and not let it fall down while I get the double pins installed.
    Great video, thanks.

      Step 4 of the installation in the True Tow owners manual states” securing the trailer brackets at the 32 inch mark will put the least amount of stress on the trailer and hitch providing the safest tow”
      You can down load the app which has the install instructions

    In the setup shown did you use the 6-in drop or 8-in drop version of the weigh safe? I have an F-150 and I'm looking at getting a trailer pretty much that size and weight. I am doing my homework into weight distribution hitches now, and 6 in or 8 in is one of the factors you have to choose when ordering this hitch. Which one did you use in this video?

      I have a 2013 F150 Super Crew 5’-6” Bed (2WD) and just purchased the WSWD6-2 True Tow Weight Distribution Hitch with Tongue Weight Guage & 6” drop length with 2” shank size. I am towing a 16’ tandem enclosed cargo with Gross Trailer Weight of 4,000 lbs. If you have 2 wheel drive pickup the 8” is way too big. I had to install the 6”draw bar in the rise position with the weight distribution head assembly attached all the way down into bottom holes of the 6” draw bar for the trailer to be level (the tail gate still opens with the 6” draw bar inverted upwards on my truck). I will be towing from TX to FL but have not tried it out yet

    That is a nice hitch , how do you calculate your hitch weight? Is it 600lbs or 1300lbs?

    Please help me understand. I don't see anything about this hitch that controls sway.

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  Год назад

      Sway control is applied via downward pressure from the spring bars on the L brackets. This creates friction, as well as compression, which helps control the trailers ability to hinge against the truck
