      I feel the same way, honestly.
      One of the pieces of jewelry that I wear daily is an unplated ring that looks decidedly off-white in the right light. To me, though, that just adds to its appeal. I can't imagine a context where "it looks like it's made of literal gold" is a bug rather than a feature.
      In general, I just don't *get* plating precious metals. They all look nice.

    I was in a jewellers one time and the resident ‘expert’ was telling me how white gold is simply rhodium plated yellow gold. Needless to say I headed for the door. Some jewellers are clueless and it’s so refreshing to see someone who knows their stuff! :)

    • @TheWinkick
      @TheWinkick 3 года назад +8

      I think he meant something different. A lot of mass producing jewelry companies, mostly from Turkey and China, use yellow gold for its better casting and stamping abilities and slightly lower price, then using rhodium plating for achieving white color, mostly Chines companies even using thick silver coating before rhodium plating, so it will take longer to see yellow gold. My point is, most of resellers are buying from those companies and it is common they will sell you a rhodium plated yellow gold, they might not even know it is yellow gold.

    • @nickreeder2979
      @nickreeder2979 3 года назад +12

      @@TheWinkick Thank you for this. It’s very interesting but I don’t think it applies to the jewellers I was in. They were supposedly ’high end’ and saying it applied to all WG produced. I’ve got a ton of stories when it comes to jewellers. Another is when I asked to see if they had any aquamarines and they wordlessly gave me lapis, or when another was trying to sell me a huge pink CZ stating it was a sapphire. I also used to work as a jeweller and my boss had no idea about a lot of things and would feed rubbish to the customers to try and sound good. It just really grates on me since customers look to jewellers for expert knowledge when sometimes all the jeweller cares about is selling, or just don’t know much beyond the very basics and don’t care to learn. Anyway,, sorry to waffle! 😂

      Unfortunately he was correct. The introduction of white metals such as palladium or nickel and silver give gold a pale yellow colour which needs to be plated wirh Rhodium to make it white.
      I have looked at a recent spec. sheet for a white gold alloy and the range is from 53% palladium to 47% gold to 53% palladium,16% silver and 31%gold.
      These alloys look white but as you can see the trade off is less actual gold. The trend is more for White gold these days, but as my daughter and wife will tell you. It soon turns back to gold if indeed it is made of gold.....which is yellow.

    Seems rather silly to me that people rhodium plate white gold and platinum when rhodium over silver could be used. What a waste of money as no one will ever know what's under the rhodium. Freshly polished silver IMO looks a heck of a lot like rhodium. As a lover of rhodium, but not of having to get get rings plated constantly, I've simply switched to wearing silver. Honestly, the average person would have no idea if it's silver, platinum or rhodium anyway (not that I care that others know what I'm wearing, but it's interesting nonetheless).

    Is there a way to tell the alloys apart? Let’s say with white gold, is there a way to know which alloy was used? I have a class ring I had gotten in a sale and it is of a white metal. Seeing as though most class rings I have seen are either a white gold or just full palladium, is there a way to tell the difference without scarring or destroying it?

      could be anything I don't have a lot of info but could be it pierced poorly, it's getting constantly bumped, you're touching it, sleeping on it, externally threaded jewellery, you put a hoop in too soon the list goes on and on I'd recommend you go to a reputable piercer and ask them

    Palladium was cheaper than gold in the 70s and for a while there after . We used palladium as a cheap white gold for setting pave in small diamonds . The color is not totally white so where possible it was rhodium plated . For almost 40 years I used 19 Kt. white gold rather than 18Kt. with palladium as the 19 is a much better color . I did not bother ever rhodium plating it as it looks very white not as good as platinum for the blue white look but significantly whiter than 18Kt white / palladium . My 2 cents as a retired Canadian jeweler .

    Jewellers should explore another territory, silver alloyed with PGM. Small amount of PGM will make silver alloy look and behaves better.
    I have smelted silver piece that was heavy rhodium plated and result button after time looks entirely different than sterling one, it is harder and have nearly lustrous surface. Additionally it seems to be tarnish-less.

    • @calangel

      They have. John, a metallurgist with Stuller, created a palladium silver called Continuum. It come out casted as hard as Pt900, and can be heat treated to the hardness of 14K.
      The reason it generally isn't done is because it increases the cost a lot and most aren't willing to pay those prices for silver. Also, PGMs also generally have low solubility in group 11 metals.
      They have white gold alloys that utilize both nickel and silver, while incorporating less copper. These alloys are far whiter, work better, and are less prone to stress corrosion than normal nickel white gold.

    Would really love OPs opinion, but anyone's would be appreciated. Do you think that an engagement ring in rose gold will look dated, because it's having something of a recent revival? Also, I'm not very hard on rings, and can afford 18ct gold, but is it a good option for daily wear? My understanding is that 10kt is stronger, but more brittle. Thoughts for me?

    • @alishaygan9844
      @alishaygan9844 3 года назад +2

      do not use 10k. 10k gold barely scrapes by the minimum requirement to be able to be legally called gold. yes, rose gold will look dated as anything that is a trend will date back to the period. that’s not necessarily to say don’t get a ring in rose gold, if you love rose gold, be dated and who cares. but since ur asking, it’s evident that you are not in love w rose gold. 18k will be forever timeless. that’s the way i would go.

    • @juzagirlntheroom2692

      @@alishaygan9844 thank you. I’m still on the fence with rose gold, but have definitely decided to go 18kt gold. I went to a store, Tivol, not sure if it’s just a local thing, or well known and I genuinely fell in love with the beauty of 18kt gold. They don’t carry 10kt, but I did have the opportunity to compare 18kt to 14kt. There is no question which is more beautiful. I’ve noticed most of my European friends have 18kt, while the American friends seem to have 14kt. Not sure why that seems to be their standards.

      I have an 18ct wedding band that I have worn every day for 25 years. It's a bit thinner than it used to be (unlike me haha) and the etched design is now almost invisible, but its not misshapen in any way (and I never take it off) and should see me out. My engagement ring is also 18ct and is pretty much the same as it was when it was new, but then I don't wear it constantly.
