I've had the Montage 8 sense Oct. 2016, and have owned almost all of their previous boards over the years. IMO the Montage is the "Best" sounding board they've made to date! With all the Motif sounds, S90es piano sample, DX engine, and Flash ROM built in.. not to mention all the NEW sounds added. It really is amazing. ALSO midi AND Digital audio are all handled via one USB cable.. with very low latency. Amazing! ; )
I had a Motif ES7, but it was stolen a few years ago. At the time, the XF was the latest version, and I kept waiting for a new Motif, but Yamaha never made one. As soon as the information about the Montage was released, I bought a Motif XF6. The Montage isn't a Motif at all. It's just a Rompler with a built in FM synth and one giant Macro that's shaped like a nipple and lights up. I actually got to talk online with some of Yamaha's reps, and they told me that their research showed that most users weren't concerned with on board sequencing because they would rather sequence in a computer. They also said that there were much better sampling solutions on the computer too. My response was, everything the the Montage can do, can be done better on a computer. I wanted a Motif so that I can turn the computer off and still make music. I don't think they considered that perspective. I really expected the Montage to be something that would be comparable to the Kronos, but it's not even close. In my opinion, Yamaha never accepted the challenge that is Kronos, and they really dropped the ball with Montage.
Yep, it's not a Motif replacement at all, it's not a workstation in my opinion, it's a rompler/synth as far as I can see. I'm cool with that for how I use it, but I definitely think they should have created an updated motif with all the options for folks that want to work without the computer as well as those that do. I use it as I do any other external instrument, I just record the audio to my sampler, or audio tracks of whatever I'm using at the moment. But considering the cost, you'd think it would at least have the same sequencing/standalone functions as the Motif.
But isn't this true of every synth? Most if not all of what is done on a synth can be done on a PC. This would include the Kronos. The Montage and Kronos are both great synths. They are just different tools. It's like deciding between a Les Paul and a Stratocaster. Which is better? It's all subjective. What synths give you is better portability, less chance of crashing, and they free up CPU utilization. Personally, I don't know many people who use built-in sequencers other than as a scratch pad for ideas. Anything more complex is so much easier to do on a PC. You say "Yamaha never accepted the challenge that is Kronos". Again, this is very subjective. You see just as many Montage's in studios and on stage as you do a Kronos. In many cases you see both. If you think about it, why would Yamaha want to make a Kronos, and why would Korg want to make a Montage? As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life.
How about a comparison between the best Montage Grand Piano and the best Keyscape Grand Piano (maybe compare other sounds between the two as well, time permitting)?
Hmmm, I'm not big on the term "best" because it's super subjective, what I may feel is the best someone else may think is the worst lol, but we'll see, thanks for the suggestion though.
Of course. By "best" I meant what Yamaha deems to be their flagship Grand Piano sound versus what Spectrasonics deems theirs. Once demonstrated side by side, the subjectivity would then belong to the viewers. I hope this clarifies.
Thanks for watching. We'll see, I don't generally connect this type of gear to my computer that way, but they do have a plugin so I may check that out.
yamaha always good call me insane but I have a MM 6 old keyboard we do live music this old thing still my favorite soooooo easy to program in the fly besides I only pay $300 with a gig bag years ago in guitar center
Joe, As an FM synth, do you think the Montage has enough character to become a legendary synth, like the DX7? How do you feel about the stepping when using the super knob? Can you do a video on creating Montage instruments using samples from your modular oscillators?
I couldn't say. I'm not an FM guy like that, was never really into the DX7 so I can just say that the Montage is cool and messing with the FM is pretty easy. Haven't dug into importing samples to create instruments, not even sure of the process yet.
The sound is great but I'm more interested in the FMX section of the Montage...and I think it would be too expensive an investment just to get those sounds.
What about ethnic instruments? is the selection bigger & badder than the motif xf? i wasn't too impressed with the motif xf library when I went through the ethnic category. you should demo a handful of sounds that blow you away quality wise
@@SoundsAndGear It is. I downloaded the audio from this video and analysed the stereo image on logic pro x. It is mono, there's no space in the stereo image...
Not sure what you mean, there's a button on the screen of the Montage that says category search. It opens the categories so you can browse by them. This video is just a demo of some of the sounds, not every category.
SoundsAndGear just wanted to know what some of the sounds sound like . Like is it some of the same sounds as the previous Yamaha keyboards or sound modules like the Dx7, Sy77,Fbo1,,Motif,Mox,Moxf, Or something entirely new beside the big blue white red power knob.
As soon as you touched that knob, I made me want this ASAP!!!!
HAHAHAHA! Thanks for watching.

Great job here, keep up the good work.

SJ, we talked about this, you're giving away my gems. I need you to pull this video. They ain't ready for this.
Ahahahaha man I know you been on this for a minute, finally getting some time with it. Joint is nice man.
Man that thing sounds dope! I like how the blue light on the knob matches the blue light on the keyboard in your bumper lol
Ahahahaha word LOL!
Does it have built-in speakers? Sounds great
No speakers built in, you have to hook it up to speakers or headphones.
How does the Montage compare to the Access Virus Ti2
I'd say they are totally different types of instruments.
Same as a guitar to a double bass
It sounds good or is that just your playing.
My playing isn't the best, it sounds good indeed :)
Finally, I been waiting on this
Cool, let me know if you have questions!
can u show us some of the new drum sounds kits?
I don't know what's new but I'll put that on the list.
How about a comparison between the best Montage Grand Piano and the best Keyscape Grand Piano (maybe compare other sounds between the two as well, time permitting)?

Ahh word, got ya, cool, we'll see, got a lot of other things I want to cover too.
Nice video thanks.
Thanks for watching
Hey man. Could you demo all the hip hop beats specifically the drums.
Thanks for watching, I no longer have this keyboard.
SoundsAndGear oh ok. What did you get?
@@zilla531 I sent it back to Yamaha, I had it in for a review for about a year or so.
SoundsAndGear ok
Is this good for recording in the studio also ?
I'm sure it would be fine.
Have fun!
Thanks!
Please show us the multitimbral function running in your DAW.
Could you also do some sound design?
Thanks for watching. We'll see, I don't generally connect this type of gear to my computer that way, but they do have a plugin so I may check that out.
nice sounds!
Yeah fam, this is only a few lol, they got some good stuff in there!

Do u like better than the 8?
Never tried the 8, I prefer 61 keys for a board like this.
The sound is great but I'm more interested in the FMX section of the Montage...and I think it would be too expensive an investment just to get those sounds.
I hear ya, I'm sure many are interesting in just that portion as well. Thanks for watching!
Do you use this with the mpc x?
When I had it yes, just like any other instrument, recording audio into the X.
What about ethnic instruments? is the selection bigger & badder than the motif xf? i wasn't too impressed with the motif xf library when I went through the ethnic category. you should demo a handful of sounds that blow you away quality wise
I'll throw ethnic sounds on the list, I may just do a short video of different categories for people to get an idea of the sounds.
Are the Keys weighted?
No, they are synth action, the 88 key version is weighted though
The Motif sounds tons better?!
Motif definitely has its own sound
Parts of the sound remind me of a Synclavier.
Thanks for watching!
I'm just waiting for that demo beat I know you're cooking up lol
Ahahahaha lol
doing a demo with a mono recorded sound is just wrong. We can't hear how it really is.
it's not recorded in mono....

There's stuff from the motif line as well as a bunch of new sounds.
SoundsAndGear kool thanks
No problem. It also can open motif library files.
This is so playa!!!! That price tho...
Maaaaaaaan I feel you bro, but man...def plenty of inspiration in there.
