Well considering its price, no sequencer edit options, no USB 3 & no sampler & many more flaws this instrument isnt that amazing as this commercial claims to be, for its price u expect a complete workstation
Who needs sequencer edit when you have a computer DAW? For that matter, who needs a HW sampler when you can sample into Kontact and then move the saved sample to your workstation, nicely edited and looped? USB3 would be nice, but it's not like you're going to move Gbs of data over USB. None of these are serious flaws to me. The nice integration into Cubase is a much bigger plus.
It's ironic that this video begins by proclaiming "Welcome to the New Era of synthesis!" I sincerely hope there is no one out there reading this who took that statement at face value. The Montage is more like the last sulfuric belch of a volcano that henceforth won't erupt again for thousands of years. Music hardware is moving into a phase where gear is patterned after apps. That is, single-purpose, light-footprint (both physically and on your wallet) devices that specialize in one method of synthesis or one sound palette, and excel in offering a great, specific user interface to control those sounds. Anyone who has worked with both behemoth synths like the Montage and a collection of smaller, discrete units, knows that it's far more difficult to master (and remember) the controls of a generic, all-purpose interface like the Montage's vs. a bunch of specialized, limited devices. It's very much the same phenomenon as why it is so maddening to try to program a VCR (if you remember those) or do advanced functions on a microwave oven. Our brains just for whatever reason remember the abstract (instructions) better if we can associate it with a discrete physical device. I.e., no one ever looked at a mechanical wristwatch and said, "Crap, how do I wind it again???" I'm sure many will make great music with the Montage. To me it sounds slick, dated, and hopelessly out of touch with modern tastes (whether indie or pop), but I know there are talented people out there who will take those first impressions as a challenge to do something really interesting with it, and more power to you.
I have the sound of this video running through my 15" near field speakers and it sounds incredible. I think most of the comments disagree with the marketing hype and maybe are listening through their PC speakers or low quality ones at least and then say it sounds lifeless and unimpressive. As an acoustical engineer I think what I'm hearing is amazing. A talented keyboardist will love this piece of gear as much as a Kronos or others if given a chance to play around with it for a week putting it through its paces. I'd love to play it if my hands were not arthritic!
I am a long time yamaha fan and customer. I'm excited about this new synth coming out. But I have to admit the excitement has simmered down these past days because Ive yet to see a video on youtube (or anywhere) where they're not showing THE SAME 4 or 5 new sounds. (the new cfx piano, seattle strings & about 3 new really cool synth sounds). COME ON YAMAHA show me something else PLEASE!!!!!
I actually dont understand all the negativity, this seems like a substantial upgrade from the Motif. Unlike most, I am NOT a fanboy of one brand or another, the 4 major competitors in the workstation space (Korg, Kurzweil, Roland, and Yamaha) each have their own advantages, and in my opinion, are designed for nearly completely different uses. Kurzweil for example is probably the best keyboard for creating your own sounds from scratch but requires a deep understanding of how sound works (and as such, many of the default sounds of the Kurzweil are not as good as Yamaha), while Yamaha is on the other side of the spectrum, their specialty is quality sounds built right into the keyboard but lacks some of the sound modification features of Kurzweil. Korg offers simplicity, not nearly as in depth as Kurzweil, but is MUCH simpler to learn and use (and in my opinion, the quality of some of the sounds are not very good). Since I havent actually used Roland, I cant speak to specifics. If you are looking for a keyboard that has very good sounds built right into the keyboard and are not interested in creating your own sounds to the nth degree, Yamaha is a good choice, kind of right down the middle. Also, in my opinion, Yamaha specializes in music creation, not sound creation. If you are looking to write music and want something to inspire you, Yamaha does just that and the motion keyboard takes that to a different level. Is the blinking power knob and the marketing a bit over the top? Yes. But it still is a fantastic keyboard, if writing music and most importantly, inspiration is important to you. In alot of ways, the Yamaha plays itself, something I cant say as much for others, this can be a good thing or a bad thing, again, depending on what you are looking for. The reality is, all of these keyboards are overpriced and I wish the music industry would get real for a second. 8 GB of storage and thats supposed to be incredible? A $4000 keyboard and they cant be bothered to put in more storage? My guess is that this keyboard will be expandable in storage and they will overcharge on memory, the motif memory expansion modules are currently $300 for 1 GB. Mind you, thats just one aspect of how overpriced these keyboards really are, and by the way, this isnt just limited to Yamaha, they are ALL overpriced for what they are, in many more aspects than just memory. A PC offers all the same customization these keyboards do (given you have the right software and the sound fonts), offers more computing power and flexibility, the only issue with using a PC is the UI isnt really usable while playing the keyboard. So, all of this to say this, lets stop with the fanboy nonsense, research the 4 major brands and decide what you are looking for, if you do buy this keyboard, turn off the blinky knob, and consider that all of these keyboards are overpriced, we are only buying them because we dont have any choices. These keyboards could be half the price and offer the same functionality (given the hardware in them).
I like it, nice WSK and nice playing, not too "showey" so you can hear what the sounds are doing rather than the demonstrator - and an nice relaxed informative style. I'll be in the market of a WSK later this year, and what I have heard so far I like.....a.lot!
okay in the mean time there are several presentations on the tube ,, but this Blake Angelos is the most in details version on the new Yamaha Montage !! and now we know , why we have must wait so long !! for the next super multi sound & synth music pro workstation , after the already amazing yamaha motif xs - xf series !! its now time for the Yamaha Montage .!!
+Studio-Ron you ever program fm ? if you are this is progrmaning tool not instrument to make something good in fm you neeed timeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ,yamaha say loads of ppl program fm like 2 years to get this soft week sounds
Incredible instrument sounds. Absolutely stunning acoustic grand piano with unbelievable sustain. The Yamaha pianos in the Montage sounds much better than the majority of acoustic pianos I have heard. The Rhodes piano variations are really accurate reproductions of a number of different Rhodes models that I have owned in my life. Whats more, no need to be concerned about bent or out of tune tines as in the original Rhodes mechanical pianos. That said, I have no use for all the Trance music or most of the so called performances that comes with the Montage. Those are of a different generation than mine. I thoroughly enjoyed Blake's playing. Its great to hear a demo by someone that can actually play music. As an owner of a Yamaha Motif ES8, I can honestly say I got more than my money's worth from that instrument. It has paid for itself several times over, and in the years I've owned it, it never gave me any trouble. I moved it around, played private parties and small club gigs for years and it never failed. I have a flight case for it and always handled it with great care. So, Yamaha instruments not only sound great, they are reliable.
Ac. piano in 8:34. It Sounds nice but, is so perfect, so clean, so inorganic... I prefer a "woodier" and singing sound, like Imperfect Samples Fazioli library, for instance
Glowing knobs and led buttons, but they still are proud of the AWM and FM. Is any company interested in competing against a computer and a midi keyboard? They are stuck in the past and we are not deaf.
+Hermes Mercury Hey I agree a plenty of possibillity and touch screen are definitely pros in comparation with my MOTIF XF ... BUT... I agree the sounds are stuck in the past! Even the ones that seem to be build it to sound to be capable of doing modern sounds. I love yamaha I have THE MOX AND THE MOTIF and would like to have the TYROS just because of the perfect sounds its capable to deliver. .(especially the natural ones) Well I dont think I will live that time personally but a TYROS MONTAGE would maaaaybe be a good combination. But I probably should be selling my house to buy it.
+Tomislav Buzan if you have an MOXF and a MOTIF why buy a montage? Personally I am way more impressed with the MOXF than the4 Montage. The money difference is less than half and the MOXF8 has every feature the Montage has....every important one.
+Mr. Extreme No worries, you can turn off the blinking super knob or set it to a solid color if you prefer. Blake shows this at 5:44...Thanks for watching! -Dave
It's not about what you play ;) ... It's about HOW you play it ... This unit is not going to make you a better musician or writer or sell more... It has to come from your heart ;)
knowing what ive learned on sound design and music production over the past 15 years i cant justify the price you pay for one of these. even if i was filthy rich
haha ok i admit that was a bit of a burn, but i learn the hobby with limited money. with cubase, absynth, serum etc, an old dx100, monitors, and my h6, ive never struggled to get creative
KUPHSER There' s not a damn thing wrong with that either! It still comes down to the person. You can have shit for equipment and still make something respectable. By the same token, I've seen people turn out mediocre stuff on some of the best equipment. That you can be creative with what you have speaks volumes. Kudos!
+DIGITALSCREAMS I think they just have oversaturated this presentation... The morphing functions are cool... but the sound itself just doesn't impress me.
Amazing demo as usual Blake! I've watched both your MODX demo and this one for the Montage. I will be buying one of those once I figured out which one I want.
Yes... well, another great synth. *Long sip of coffee...* from a musician at heart, and his own small house studio experience, I can see where they went with this synth. No doubt this hoopla always prevails for a while with anything new, and no doubt this synth will be a great addition to any music studio, and specially for someone doing his live signature presentation. I have my own vision though, and hence this here two cents of mine: No sequencer. That, to me, automatically puts it in a category of a slave unit. As someone else here put it, for the price being asked, no amount of dsp for effects power, substantiates actual creative power they could have made this synth have with sequencer included. Mine as well just buy the rack mount unit, and save money. Which brings up question #2: This unit is capable of 32 effects (apparently) available at the same time... Then why did they still had to "sample" every frikin' piano key? ??? My Roland Fantom G has that, and the manual that came with it was printed in 2008. So either Yamaha is cheating with available resources on the synth power, by taking away sequencer and few other bells and whistles, and utilize that for effects and the knob (?...lol), or their R&D guys need less vacation time, and more schooling how to properly utilize today's dsp chips' power. Or... and this is here just to sound more complete, they still use the same dsp chips from their previous flag ship synth, and just tried to create something different with their existing hardware. Sorry for making this kind'a long, and if you guys read this, thank you for that! Face it, today's synthesizers are really kick-ass computers, capable of producing sounds we love to use, with their powerful chips, so from a musician's point of view, I will just have to wait a little longer, until something else (from somebody else) comes out, being a "complete" flag ship. A synth I can put up in front of me, with a sequencer recorder, and being able to control everything else in my cave. Blinking lights and flashing buttons are a bonus.
+Daniel Kuciel Good post Daniel. I agree. I also feel it's pretty much always like this. Every synth manufacturer uses same dps chips and samples, invents only little new things and re-sells the older flag ships for years to come. Can anyone tell me any excuse in year 2016 why keyboard brasses sounds like they do compared to computer worlds samples? It's definitely not the memory, nor should it be the cost of HD space. One example is bit like kurzweils pc3 that was released in '08 and it had a huge amount of exactly same samples that were present in pc2 model released 8 years prior, only with better fx and virtual analog engine. I'm now using korg's kronos 2, and it's somewhat a big let down. Dynamic piano is non existent. Also you'd think it's a lot more powerful from all the commercials than it really is. Polyphony is a joke and sometimes it only takes 2!! programs to fill it up to point of note stealing etc and a lot of other issues. Also in this Montage demo, sure the sustain in the piano is awesome but it should had been demonstrated with a chords and chords changes holding a sustain pedal, because i suspect we're not getting the real "truth" about this "fantastically" long sustain being demonstrated. Oh well. :)
Linda B Thank you. Again, I'm not saying this keyboard is at all bad, just suited more towards live performances where you jam with others. I'm more into creation of songs (and obviously playback), so having sequencer keyboard as a master keyboard controlling everything else, is utmost important.
Can we stop comparing this to the KRONOS please? Different league. Different ball game. This keyboard simply sounds incredible and it looks like a lot of fun to play. I do think that Yamaha has completely missed the fact that EDM fanboys not only have no idea how to even play an instrument, they don't actually pay for instruments. They make their music with stolen samples and hacked copies of Komplete. One macro doesn't do much for me. Give me 8 super knobs, an 8 voice analog synth, FMx, AWM2, a sampler, and a drum machine with pads... I'm all in.
Its a great keyboard, some people are just upset they don't have the bucks to buy one. I say save up your money and buy one. Go get a good job or GIG that pays well. Practice so you sound better.
2 of my favorite 90's synths just got crossbred. :-) The Yamaha SY-77 and the Korg Wavestation. ;-) Behind the scenes Yamaha aided in the development of the WS.
Korg has been doing this type of sound modeling for years! The Korg Karma did all of this stuff back in 2001. And NOW Yamaha wants to sell you on this (insert fancy adjective here) innovation? I'm not bashing as my first real synth was the Yamaha SY-77. I really like a lot of natural sounds in this video but it seems to me that they are really pushing the Karma style fx/bells & whistles and throwing a blue light on top. After considering all of its strengths and weaknesses, For $3999, I'll stick with my Kronos. Anyone else agree?
Mikeg73070 I actually owned Korg Karma. You are almost correct on the bells and whistles lol 4K is pretty much the same amount as what I paid for my Roland Fandom G, back in its release days... and the synth has a sequencer. Not bushing anything here, just saying this one is more for stage production instead of studio work.
I had a DX7 back in the 80’s. I had no great love for it. Programming it was a Herculean effort. Looking back, unless you’re into nostalgia and the Depeche Mode era of pop music, why?????? And that flashing superknob would drive me crazy.
This video is not a review, as some idiots here are saying, this is an advertisement/demo by the manufacturer. Some of my observations about the Montage: 1) I'm really disappointed that Yamaha chose to not include a full-fledged sequencer nor user sampling! And still they put this in the same high-price category with the best of workstations like the Korg Kronos! WTF?? 2) AWM2 + FM(X)?? You mean the same sythesis technology and engines that were used in the SY77, 25 years ago, and ONLY those??? 3) No HDD/SSD?? 4) Add one more knob with a fancy light, call it a super knob (how incredibly cheesy) and make it a major feature??? 5) The "orchestral" voices still sound very artificial! Putting all the previous points together, it really seems to me that Yamaha is somehow stuck in their "golden years" 25 or more years ago, and cannot break free of their limited thinking. Sure they have thankfully advanced somewhat (like the colour touch screen and some other improvements) but this just seems to be by the general technological advance available anywhere, but still I'm most astonished that they still stick to artificial limitations like a fixed polyphony ceiling or the lack of a hard drive (or SSD). I would like to point to the Alesis Fusion from 2005 that had: 1) unlimited modulation matrix, so almost every parameter was a modulation source/target, so you could achieve e.g. this "super knob" with one of the four available knobs 2) a HDD, so you could save your voices/songs/combinations/multisamples freely with no onboard RAM/ROM numeric slot limits. 3) HDD audio recording with 8 simultaneous inputs 4) four synthesis engines including a freely routable 8-operator FM (no "algorithm" limits) 5) A very intuitive user interface despite the 240x128 monochrome LCD. Granted the Fusion had some annoyancies and limitations, and some unfortunate events caused it to be retired way WAY ahead of its time, but in my mind it achieved a freedom and flexibility in a workstation that is still almost unparallelled, ten years after. Korg's Kronos comes very close though. But Yamaha: WTF, are you seriously stuck in a time loop or something??
Okay, I'm not familiar with a Volkswagen workstation, how does it compare, does it have a complete sequencer, what kind of synthesis engines, an SSD for free storage of everything, user sampling, audio recording, what kind of UI, non-limited polyphony???
+Petri Virekoski Snoo Lee was being sarcastic(in other words,he was telling you to buy a car.)By the way...I agree with you about the Montage(too damn expensive for what it is and not innovative enough.)
I hope they do an FMX only synth at Namm. While I appreciate the Montage and sample sounds I fear I’d be only using a fraction of the instrument by simply using it for its FM sounds. If they don’t, well I may have to bite the bullet. Not much else on the market for FM stuff.
Literally falling in love with this killer synth.. loving how its all programmed and the super knob thing.. Can anyone tell me if there is any other Keyboard that uses this ?
@Kraft Music, how do I purchase this board from you to be shipped to the English speaking Caribbean and retain my warranty? I only see Spanish and Latin Am covered on Yamaha'a website.
and was he saying, every part of performance, AUDIO (not midi) can be routed to usb (say, a VST in a DAW) , and back to the motif ? so this can be combined with a computer, leveraging VST instruments/effects ?
Do the words Yamaha and Montage really have to be so huge on the front panel. They can drop a hundred on the price to compensate for the advertising. Plus I have a Motif ES6 and am not really convinced the new piano for example sounds better, 2gb it maybe, but the one on the ES6 is also multi velocity layered and sounds very good, same with guitars and so on. Strings I use EWQL. Newer is not necessarily better.
+Jimmie Rambo No I don't think they're aiming at the Kronos market..... there's no sequencer or pattern mode for example. ... What will hopefully be true is that it is as well bulit as the Motif. If it is, that aspect will simply blow Korg out of the water of course....
+arjay1949 If you mean built quality, You're right, 'cause Kronos is realy cheap here, considering it's price and top sonic quality. All other stuff still far better in Kronos.
+Henrik Gustav well yes there is a point i have seen not any multi track sequencer - song mode and sure the amazing multi sections pattern mode real time track and mix recordings options that is on the motif xs - xf series and the only small talk in Blake Angelos video is the only info SO MORE ABOUT THAT INFO ON THE MONTAGE would be great .!!
+Studio-Ron No sequencer - no sampling - no pattern mode. It's like it says on the tin - it's a music synthesiser... not a workstation. You need to buy an XF (before they all disappear!) or a Kronos if you want a workstation....
+Henrik Gustav For the moment, yes...until the stocks run out! Yamaha say in the new owners manual that the Montage will replace the Motif. And it is now called a 'music synthesiser', not a 'workstation' any more...
+Henrik Gustav This isn't a workstation. No sampler, No proper sequencer, No expandable Flash ROM although you can load from an SD card. Still that data isn't always ready. This is clearly a performance synth made to be used with a DAW which is perfectly fine by me. Motif XF is still the flagship workstation.
A lot of dance presets, for one-finger play, like in arranger-type of keyboard. Oh, and let's have a look, in manual we see: "We took the bread-and-butter sounds of the MOTIF series used extensively by artists worldwide, and significantly enhanced them". No Yamaha, no... I'm so dissapointed. Thank's God, there's the Kronos.
+Bartosz Staszkiewicz I can smell a hater who realized he paid twice the money for a Kronos who does not sound any better than the Montage. Failbob, stop trashtalking around. Montage is something complete different than the Kronos. do you even think before you write?
MrHollabk Your last question fit you sooo well. Twice the money for Kronos? Let's check. On Sweetwater Kronos 88 Platinium edition lists for 3700$. Montage 8 - 4000$. Kronos doesn't sound any better you said. Well, there's no point to discuss about taste, yours ot mine. For me, Kronos sounds at least same level in sonic quality in his own, different way (Korg sound vs Yamaha sound). Probably Kronos sounds even better. But it's not only about the sound. Korg is much, much better equipped, more features, synth engines, seq, sampler, SSD vector joystick. Geez, and Yamaha borrow some of Korg solutions. I used Motif ES extensively for many years, left it to the Kronos for obvious reasons. Montage can't change it, there's no sense of returning to Yamaha still.
Dynamite Kid I have no doubt, that in general there's still no better standalone keyboard workstation than Kronos. We can discuss about some personal preferences, but as a whole thing no one keyboard is as versatile, equal in all type of sounds, user-friendly and ready for future developement as Kronos. Last 5 years shown how good work Korg can do making Kronos' OS better and better, adding new important features, enhancing it's sonic possibilities, creating new sound banks, samples collections. Kronos is also opened for hardware improvements, so even if third generation of Kronos is on the market now, the first gen still can be easy and cheap upgraded to reach the same features.
Hi guys so many different reviews here:) I am shopping for a keyboard now and would appreciate some recommendations. I am in New Zealand so am limited to what is available here. Mainly Yamaha.
so they sell again motif with 2 core motif dps vs core 1 with analog ac/dc and most of software from motif live linux is cuted out ,so they can add dx and bash casio dj live perfomance synth ,nice yamaha ..... lol and to add on all that price of 3500-4000$ i mean GJ yamaha (not dj couse dj need tick sounds not this week junk) on end we have fm engine ,motif re-programable engine (new 2 core dps need new soft i guess) all workstation parts are deleted and all for price of 4000 $ cute
I might get it if it was about half the price....but in this day and age of cheap ram, cpu's, SSD's, and VST's no thanks Yamaha. It does sound good though. An 8op FM rack module would be cool to add to the rack for us dinosaurs.
I Live in Brszil in a state called Ceará in the countryside place, here is very hot i play an old guitar and it does not work very well sometimes , my dream is have a very good synthetizer but it is too expensive for me. I like todos complete songs.
I think the Montage is better to explore and is more versatile while the Kronos is better tuned. If you listen a factory demo of both sounds you'll choose the Kronos. But the Montage is the real beast after tuning!
Lordtunes World if you’re not going to answer the question, why bother except to belittle like you tried? I say tried because you don’t seem to know the difference between chose and choose. In response to Jerm though, I would say that for sonic immediacy, the Montage is a better choice. Make no mistake, the Kronos is a powerful beast and has lots of different synth engines, but that also brings with it lots of menu diving and I didn’t find the interface particularly intuitive. For the types of sound I want, and for general noodling and getting list in sounds, the Montage won me over more than the Kronos. Of course, your mileage may vary so yes, if you can get to try them both I would strongly recommend doing so.
A lifeless, rehearsed, musically archaic presentation. And it's a wonderful machine, that's the real shame. A less rehearsed presentation from a modern musician who doesn't recreate stale 90s electro would've done so much better a service...
I am just trying to understand the technology given I have not really done anything musically (other than acoustic piano) since I bought a Roland A80 master keyboard, Korg M1Rex synth, Roland R8 drum machine and Yamaha A3000 sampler yonks ago. Things really have moved on. I was interested to know whether everything in this video was purely the Montage and nothing else. For instance, from 20' 50" I can hear an arpeggiator but also 'drum machine'. Is the latter from the Montage and if it is, is it being driven from the Montage itself, i.e. nothing external controlling it?
Definitely all the montage. Sounds much better on a pair of flat response headphones. I am very happy with mine and enjoy just playing it a lot, from piano to techno. The only thing it doesn’t do is analog, but it has some good samples of classic analog sounds and you can add an analog unit and play it like a part on the montage. :)
Blake is an absolutely brilliant, dynamic musician and a fantastic clinician and demonstrator. Yamaha are fortunate to have him representing their amazing instruments ~♡
Well considering its price, no sequencer edit options, no USB 3 & no sampler & many more flaws

XHALE303 that's why I stuck with the MOTIF XF7. It's awesome and way lighter

It's Alive , in person its inspirational! Masterpiece! It's a machine to get to work with and start producing!
It's great to know that there's a sequencer inside the Montage!
This Man is a gift.
He is Unbelievable
that orchestral performance sent the chills through my spine. wow
Thanks Blake Angelos for the presentation this Yamaha workstation make me dream it's just crazy

okay in the mean time there are several presentations on the tube ,, but this Blake Angelos is the most in details version on the new Yamaha Montage !! and now we know , why we have must wait so long !! for the next super multi sound & synth music pro workstation , after the already amazing yamaha motif xs - xf series !! its now time for the Yamaha Montage .!!
+Studio-Ron you ever program fm ? if you are this is progrmaning tool not instrument
to make something good in fm you neeed timeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ,yamaha say loads of ppl program fm like 2 years to get this soft week sounds
Great review!!!
that's cool when he makes the sound change by waving his arm over the keys
nice workstation. awesome. nice to see that Yamaha isnt done yet! i still like my kronos 2 - 88 keys.......no regrets.
9:38 I can hear a white gaussian noise on soft piano notes! Is it the recording? (1080p, high volume in my headphones).
+zi1024 Aliasing?
That blinking light would drive me nuts.
+Mr. Extreme No worries, you can turn off the blinking super knob or set it to a solid color if you prefer. Blake shows this at 5:44...Thanks for watching!
-Dave
+Kraft Music Ah ok...Good to know.
Your videos are always the best and lots of learning you are one of the best Musicians...
It's not about what you play ;) ... It's about HOW you play it ... This unit is not going to make you a better musician or writer or sell more... It has to come from your heart ;)
James Starchuk well said and spot on Sir!
Nice job!! loved the video this ish had me glued! keep em comin!:)
knowing what ive learned on sound design and music production over the past 15 years i cant justify the price you pay for one of these. even if i was filthy rich
+KUPHSER My 27 years of music production/soundtack says this is easily justifiable for what it's designed to do.
haha ok i admit that was a bit of a burn, but i learn the hobby with limited money.
with cubase, absynth, serum etc, an old dx100, monitors, and my h6, ive never struggled to get creative
KUPHSER
There' s not a damn thing wrong with that either!
It still comes down to the person. You can have shit for equipment and still make something respectable.
By the same token, I've seen people turn out mediocre stuff on some of the best equipment.
That you can be creative with what you have speaks volumes. Kudos!
SuperKnob you never know what you want unless someone invent it for you and there you have it.
Sometimes I can't believe we have machines that make those sounds.....
Oh wow listen to that compressor and really cool ducking effect. Stunning clarity and power. LOL
+DIGITALSCREAMS I think they just have oversaturated this presentation... The morphing functions are cool... but the sound itself just doesn't impress me.
+DIGITALSCREAMS True. Yet it's funny to read Tomislav's rants as he soils his pink thong over the Montage.
:)
Owner's manual - 68 pages. It says a lot about architecture of this synth.
+Bartosz Staszkiewicz Just Wait for the Reference manual.
The side chain is awesome
"Even Rocky had a Montage."
"Montage!"
Yamaha, get it together.
sounds Amazing!!
I have my own vision though, and hence this here two cents of mine:
No sequencer. That, to me, automatically puts it in a category of a slave unit. As someone else here put it, for the price being asked, no amount of dsp for effects power, substantiates actual creative power they could have made this synth have with sequencer included. Mine as well just buy the rack mount unit, and save money.
Which brings up question #2:
This unit is capable of 32 effects (apparently) available at the same time...
Oh well. :)
+Daniel Kuciel I read it. Thank you. Gives me some things to think about!
Linda B Thank you. Again, I'm not saying this keyboard is at all bad, just suited more towards live performances where you jam with others. I'm more into creation of songs (and obviously playback), so having sequencer keyboard as a master keyboard controlling everything else, is utmost important.
Daniel Kuciel well said and spot on Sir!
Nice demo. BTW that intro beat sounds so Delerium lol. :)
Great demo.
24:46 Daaamn, that's good!
Practice so you sound better.
alphasxsignal if you compare this to your awesome Korg Kronos 2 88 keys or this Yamaha Montage 88 keys? Thanks and God bless you!
Hello Andrew, sounds like you know what you are talking about. I am currently looking for a good keyboard, what would you recommend?
I will stay with my Kronos 2 88key.
Yamaha Montage 88 keys
2 of my favorite 90's synths just got crossbred. :-) The Yamaha SY-77 and the Korg Wavestation. ;-) Behind the scenes Yamaha aided in the development of the WS.
Bravo Yamaha, bravo.
The cool thing about tectonic dub from scene 5 is if you hold a key you can play a riff and the arpeggio follows it with a cool matching line.
I personally think that techno stuff is for people without real musical talent, kinda like d.j. B.S.
+Beatles Eternally How is AWM2 a gimmick?
Mikeg73070 strongly agree with you there Sir!
Beatles Eternally
"The Montage is just a new Motif."
LOL!! But you don't own a Motif or Montage.
Guess that's why you have that opinion.
Beatles Eternally I have both and saw enough difference to justify both.
I agree, to each his own.
Mikeg73070 I actually owned Korg Karma. You are almost correct on the bells and whistles lol
4K is pretty much the same amount as what I paid for my Roland Fandom G, back in its release days... and the synth has a sequencer.
Boris Chang the montage is super easy to program compared to the Kronos. You can turn the light on the super knob off.
It’s an incredible machine
as well compared to the DX7
This video is not a review, as some idiots here are saying, this is an advertisement/demo by the manufacturer.
Some of my observations about the Montage:
1) I'm really disappointed that Yamaha chose to not include a full-fledged sequencer nor user sampling!
Now don't you be talking down about the SY synths. Hey, if you don't like the Montage, buy a Volkswagen.
Thanks for been one of very few people able to think
*Wonderful ♪ ♩ ♫ ♪ Thank you!* ツ
its any way to transpose semi tones with out to go to shift button and press octave up down? any way on the screen to do that?
Sorry i had to bale at 15.00 Nice piano sound.
There are variations on it. Nord uses a term called "morphing". Korg has KARMA.
the best review ! Congratulation !
Yamaha please bring back the CS 80. I feel like a super knob playing this thing.
@Kraft Music, how do I purchase this board from you to be shipped to the English speaking Caribbean and retain my warranty? I only see Spanish and Latin Am covered on Yamaha'a website.
I didn't like the sound of the Electric Piano and id love to hear what the Wurlitzer Pianos sound like.
good question about can you use samples ? can you? .Im loveing what Im hearing.Long time Yamaha customer
+jerry milam Yes
and was he saying, every part of performance, AUDIO (not midi) can be routed to usb (say, a VST in a DAW) , and back to the motif ? so this can be combined with a computer, leveraging VST instruments/effects ?
What is cool with Montage is that the Motif XF is now half the price ....;-)
+Sylvain MANTOULET haha! i like your way of thinking!
My question is can you have more than a 4part layer in performance mode?
+Jesus Valdes Yes.
Please what mixer are you using? See 16:58. Thanks!
awm2 + FM... Yamaha apllies the same wining receipt as 25 years ago with SY77 and SY99 !
does this montage came with the E pianos of DX7 and DX7 II?
Yes. He even demos one here. Yamaha is working on importing DX7 sysexes.
So no pattern mode ,, if this thing had a sequencer ,it would be a beast ,,just like the motif ,,guess ill be keeping my xf
+marcooni03 You still use hardware sequencers?
+GospelMusicians one of my favorite channel! What do you guys think of the montage
Sounds amazing! But as far as I can see, the touchscreen works a bit slow
+Danny Benthien It's actually quite fast. I suspect they tweaked the firmware before shipping it.
Min 17:35 that horror sound should not exist. Why would demo that one ? I m sure many beautiful instruments are hidden in this machine.
It shows the versatility of the board. You'll get over that sound some day.
Hi, is it possible to switch off the light of the superknob, or at least stop flashing?
Yes, you can switch it off, make it stop flashing, and control the brightness of the light of the superknob.
Yes... Hit it with a hammer
I had an ES and now a Montage. There IS a big difference.
they're aiming at korg's kronos. I need to hear those two side by side.. the piano is pretty good on here. I still think kronos piano is better
+Jimmie Rambo No I don't think they're aiming at the Kronos market..... there's no sequencer or pattern mode for example. ... What will hopefully be true is that it is as well bulit as the Motif.
If it is, that aspect will simply blow Korg out of the water of course....
+Jimmie Rambo noooo kronos is workstation this montage is meh ,not live rav dj board (missing tickness of sound) not workstation ,not ???
+Jimmie Rambo Of course, You're right. So many ideas "borrowed" here from Kronos.
+arjay1949 If you mean built quality, You're right, 'cause Kronos is realy cheap here, considering it's price and top sonic quality. All other stuff still far better in Kronos.
+Bartosz Staszkiewicz How do you know? The Montage isn't shipping yet.
8 bit piano samples?
synthesizer? not workstation? so motif xf8 is still the flagship workstation?
And it is now called a 'music synthesiser', not a 'workstation' any more...
...haha YES!!! YOU get it!!!
+MrHollabk "Enhanced" probably means added a +2 dB bump with a high shelf EQ. Yamaha insults our intelligence....
Bartosz Staszkiewicz which is better? The Kurzweil PC3K8 or Korg Kronos 2 88 keys 2015 model? Thanks and God bless you!
Great synth workstation, great guy and a great video. One question remains, why should I buy this workstation instead of a Korg Kronos? Anyone?
I have the Kronos 2 and I'm not happy with the workflow. I find it tedious.
I'm probably going to sell it and I'm looking at the Montage.
Thank you for your advise. Very useful. Can you explain more on this please.
This is not a workstation.
So there is no sequencer on board this synth at all? I did not know that. Sorry to hear that.
Tor Bruheim
Yamaha surveys over the last 6 years found more people over time doing sequencing on DAWs and less so on the keyboards.
Hi guys so many different reviews here:) I am shopping for a keyboard now and would appreciate some recommendations. I am in New Zealand so am limited to what is available here. Mainly Yamaha.
roland jdxi or the sort of new casio xw g1
Nothing beats Kronos at least for the price
I hope that knob is blinking to a midi clock.
+이런저런 apparently not
Need more info on the sequencer and recording.
Manual is available online.
Does it come in a 61/76 key version?!
Yes
so they sell again motif with 2 core motif dps vs core 1 with analog ac/dc and most of software from motif live linux is cuted out ,so they can add dx and bash casio dj live perfomance synth ,nice yamaha ..... lol
and to add on all that price of 3500-4000$ i mean GJ yamaha (not dj couse dj need tick sounds not this week junk)
on end we have fm engine ,motif re-programable engine (new 2 core dps need new soft i guess) all workstation parts are deleted and all for price of 4000 $ cute
whats the pricing for the 61keys?
$2999.99 Sweetwater
I might get it if it was about half the price....but in this day and age of cheap ram, cpu's, SSD's, and VST's no thanks Yamaha. It does sound good though. An 8op FM rack module would be cool to add to the rack for us dinosaurs.
Find an FS1R on EBay. 8Op 1U rack module with FM and formant synthesis. They're getting expensive, though.
Don't know which kid I have to sell........but I'm getting that keyboard
+Sean Nicholson How about a Kid-ney?

the hummer keyboard of this device is like clavinova or dgx ?
Can you use samples in the operators like with the SY series?
How many are going to buy this?

I Live in Brszil in a state called Ceará in the countryside place, here is very hot i play an old guitar and it does not work very well sometimes , my dream is have a very good synthetizer but it is too expensive for me. I like todos complete songs.
This a big MX!
Cool, but a dedicated FM-X only synth would be a true synth King
All this dynamic rhythm stuff is sort of like Karma from Korg
YES!!!!!
Como salvar a programação dos sons nele? Só salva no USB?
does it's keyboard is like a clavinova piano??
And I thought I was good when I had a Yamaha PSR320 when I was a kid
What is better do you think, the Montage or the Kronos?
Jerm Chose what you like...go test them out they both have features that you would never use lol
Jerm They are both capable. You don’t loose with either one, except your money if you’re not using the boards to make money.
How many arpeggiators can be played at the same time? The Motif XF can do 4 so does this do 8?
+Avi Yes.
Wow that's amazing power. Thanks for the reply.
I was sold until I see it doesn't have a sequencer , I record my music then go to the studio , this not the one for me
Michael Barr Was it has a sequencer man...I have one and it has one
What version is on this keyboard?
Elias Candelario i believe this is one of the first versions for it before any updates
A lifeless, rehearsed, musically archaic presentation. And it's a wonderful machine, that's the real shame. A less rehearsed presentation from a modern musician who doesn't recreate stale 90s electro would've done so much better a service...
MusicTrackJP might be your deal then.
Does it have a hammer key feel ?
Eric Balcon the montage 8 have hammer action i belive. The 6 and 7 are semi weighted.
