I have never in my life seen a movie/show, and thought "Man, I wish one of these characters looked like me and represented me". All I've ever cared about is a good story, and for it to be entertaining.

If i´ve been watching Action-Movies, i´ve tried sometimes to imagine, how i would stand in such fight-scences if i had the places swapped with the main-protagonist - and i´ve always came to the quick conclusion, that i´ve wouldn´t even survived two seconds.
i root for the characters and not for seeing myself in there. for this i have a mirror to look into.

As a black man I *_RESENT_* the notion that I need to see characters that look like me in order to relate to them, as if all the non-black characters I've looked up to to this point weren't FOR me. Aragorn was written _FOR_ me. Jon Snow was written _FOR_ me. Neo was written _FOR_ me. Aang was written _FOR_ me. I don't want your "representation" characters whose only defining trait is the color of their skin. Keep them. I don't care if every character in every movie or TV show from here until the end of time is white. If they are well-written with relatable human qualities, *_THEY WERE FOR ME._*

I was one of the biggest Tolkien fans you'll ever meet when I was growing up. I got The Hobbitt for my 8th birthday and devoured it. When I was 12 I found out about LOTR, and proceeded to devour it. Then I read the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, Song of Hurin, and even most of Christopher Tolkien's making-of books. I've since reread them all at least a few times. When Fellowship came out, I was in HS, and I went to see it with my friends on the first day of release, and then 8 more times in theatres. I probably watched the three movies in theatres a combined 20 times, and many more of the extended editions on dvd/Blu ray. When I watch those Tolkien lore videos, I mentally correct the mistakes they make, that's the level of Tolkien nerd that I am.
So I should be really hyped for this show, right? Well, from day one they have been crystal clear that they don't care what people like me think. I have absolutely zero interest in this crap. This isn't Star Wars, where Lucas was alive and agreed to sell Lucas film to Disney and implicitly give his approval to the new projects. Tolkien is dead. The canon is closed. This is nothing more than expensive, and bad, fan-fiction.

I was so immersed and obsessed with it, I created my own fanfic and maps. I had so much fun, and not once did I not feel included by their story. todays media/writers have very few life experiences of their own to work from so all they have are the agendas/narratives foisted on them by academia. I'm not into comic books or super heroes but Blade is one of my favourite movies ever! I still remember the first time I watched it, Wesley Snipes is so good in that (and many other movies). I love Asian and Indian movies too, because the creators write interesting stories and characters; not once have I ever thought "this would be so much better if people were white" or that I ever need people to look like me in order to relate to them. We should be able to relate to people of different races, sexes, cultures, ethnicities and economic statuses; that's what empathy is for... and we seem to be failing to nurture that in a lot of humans now.

If they cared about the lore they would have realised that the Numenoreans became a colonial power during the second age and perhaps making them diverse in the story was, by their own terms of reference, an erasure of the people they colonised when they started building kingdoms back in Middle Earth to expand their powerbase.
If they wanted a diverse cast they could have put some focus on the ancestors of the southrons and easterlings from LOTR and how they fought the Numenorean colonisers who were under the influence of Sauron and the one ring. How the ancestors of Aragorn realised their people had fallen from grace and so forged alliances with the other inhabitants of Middle Earth to resist the corrupted Numenoreans. And how that led to the war of the last alliance. And they could show southrons and easterlings fighting with the elves and men of the west to defeat Sauron in that alliance. And humanise them in a way LOTR couldn't.

Do we need to start finding inside business people with a mass murdering streak. Would that really make the movie better? what about all those teen drama shows that used people in there early twenties. I can think of a dozen more examples easily. It's saying that the stories and mythology of other ethnic groups isn't good enough to be told, it's saying women aren't interesting unless they're gender-swaped male characters. This isn't representation. Representation is more than genitals and the colour of a person's skin, it's their culture, it's their land, it's their experiences, it's their history. No one in Hollywood is interesting in telling that, no one's interested in actual representation. All they're interested in is someone's superficial body traits.

We should make our own. By us. Our own horror, drama, sci-fi, fantasy, etc, to stop the arguing.

I really want to hear the justification of why a race that lives primarily underground (the dwarves) would develop melanin to the point it would darken skin to the level depicted. The sun has existed for less than 600 years when the second age began and the elves lived in darkness before then (save during the period of the two trees and even then only in the regions effected by the light of the trees). Why would an elf develop melanin levels of that level? It would seem that the show's creators don't understand why people of color are of color. It would be like having a tribe of pale white people in Wakanda with no explanation. Amazon picked up the rights to do this show because Tolkien has such a huge existing fanbase. I don't understand why they would then, in turn, do everything in their power to alienate those fans. As far as I'm concerned, this show doesn't exist. There's no point in being heartbroken by the travesty that they are creating.

Its a failure to do world building. The men of Harad were described as having dark skin and they existed in the second age since the Numenorians colonized the hell out of them. So if you really wanted a black elf then you could have pulled the good ole forbidden romance, this time between an elf and a man of Harad. The resulting Half Elf having darker skin due to their heritage. You get the free excuse of they were not around for the War of the Ring in the Third Age due to naturally shorter life span.
If you wanted to have black dwarves that would take more work but is doable, Durin's Sons went south. You could have had another group go further south in search of more resources and go into Harad. You can say that they found a lot of resources but they lacked the kind of mountains they would normally make into their home, thus they made fortress cities on the surface and simply due to them getting far more sun then the average dwarf they developed the darker skin. You can even explain the lack of beard thing as being a cultural thing: the difficulty of the journey ran these dwarves out of rope thus they were forced to use their own durable beards in place of rope, their descendants cut their beards in honor of the sacrifices of their ancestors incorporating the cut beards into offerings and artifacts made in honor of said ancestors. You can say they did not participate in the War of the Ring directly due to them helping the good people of Harad resist Sauron which reduced the amount of Haradrim he could call upon. The Second Age lasts what, 4000 years? Plenty of time for a group of dwarves forced to live on the surface to develop the dark skin.

Agreed, if you want to have “modern sensibilities” in a fantasy world? Either create your own thing or use something written with in the last thirty years, like Shannara.
Even then to much focus on “modern sensibilities” can ruin a show, just look at the BBC's The Watch from about a year ago. The actual Discworld books are in some ways very "woke" and a large part of them is about having fairly modern sensibilities in a Late Medieval/Renaissance era fantasy world, but the BBC managed to utterly ruin the concept by being stupid and doing things like casting a normal sized clean-shaven "non-binary person" as a female Dwarf who is a more or less Tolkien style Dwarf first (as in has a beard, wears armor and carries and Axe pretty much everywhere) and a female second.

I related a lot to Bilbo back in the Hobbit ; he was homesick on his journey, thought a lot about food and comfort. I also admired him for sticking it out with his friends, and doing what he felt was right even in spite of the rift it put between him and Thorin.
Duty, Honor, Destiny, Right and wrong, a lot of this is baked into the fabric of the Lord of the Rings. The world is old and rich and vast and wonderful.
I, a woman, saw Eowyn as an amazing person, doubly so on the second read. Fighting is a hardship and a burden Men traditionally make to protect and defend that which is theirs. Eowyn desperately wanted to do something active - and she did. She and Merry wound up taking down an impossible foe, but did not escape unscathed! When she was over her trials, she had a new perspective on life, and falling into that classical role of womankind as a wife was all the more desirable after the adventure was over. This is a subtle and complex change that a less talented writer would have been like "SHE WoZ UN LOVE Bcuz HE HOT". No, two injured souls dressed each others wounds and in finding that comfortable healing, drew together in a bond they would share the rest of their lives. That is a beautiful thing.
Arwen too; with her unfailing devotion is to be admired.
Galadriel, who was mentioned more prominently than her own husband in the trilogy is also striking. Wise, beautiful, and not to be trifled with. She was tempted by the ring, and refused it - and because of its destruction, it is a herald of her people fading from Middle Earth.
No, there are not a lot of women who appear in the Lord of the Rings or Hobbit books, but the ones that do leave a distinct impression. What about Tom's wife? What about Rose? What about Nobelia, the Sackville-Baggins as a more negative depiction? There is plenty of diversity of personalities, values, beliefs... that's more important than skin.

Or who's going to remember the 15 seconds of time that "the first black female dwarf" is going to be in. I dont even know her bloody name. None of them are going to be remembered. What will be remembered and has been remembered is Tolkein and his original writings. Those are what will pass through history. Not even Peter Jacksons awesome trilogy will be remembered. But Tolkein will. And Strider, Legolas, Gandalf, and the incredible world and characters HE created. We dont need to watch this horrid butchery of his work because we have the right of it. We can ignore amazon and read his books. That will take you back to Middle Earth far better than any amazon show they just threw money at and turned it into an inclusivity, female centric, white men bad, joke. Hell, people are even getting pissed cos they think Orks are Tolkeins representation of black people and so orks are racist. The world we live in now is ridiculous.

One thing that really pisses me off about all this 'representation' and 'inclusion' drivvle is the fact that Boromir was literally the representation of humans within the story, regardless of gender or race. That's why he makes the mistakes, that's why he's corrupted because when real people are in there most desperate times they can sometimes make stupid descions, but when push comes to shove he stands up to rewrite his wrongs and stand up for what is right! That's why he's the only actual human in the fellowship. Obviously Sam and Frodo are also relatable but as a representation of HUMANS boromir is perfect.

What is contracted: Amazon, you are not allowed to directly portray the other books written by Tolkien for these time periods or use them directly as your main storyline.
What Amazon interpreted: We are not allowed to study those books and works as reference for detail accuracy in our own story, so lets not even bother reading them.
Not being able to use those works, doesn't mean they couldn't still study them and use them as reference for the accuracy of their own depicted timeline. By nature of ignoring those works entirely, you submit your own production to status of fan fiction - aka work that does not abide by the official lore and may even directly contradict said lore.

To give another show on Amazon Prime as a contrast, the Expanse has a diverse cast, and does play against gender stereotypes to a certain extent, for example, with Bobbie Draper as the Martian Marine, but each character is not there because they are a TYPE; they are individuals who go through their own character arcs, and it is through their personal growth against adversity that we come to identify with them. Although I like a lot of the characters, the one I identify with the most is Naomi Nagata. Being a white male, I don't identify with her because she is a black female--I identify with her because she is an engineer, and her intelligence, resourcefulness, and creativity are qualities I aspire to as I study to be a cybersecurity analyst. The narcissistic request from viewers these days to require characters in media to "represent" their surface level characteristics is so weird.
What ever happened to imagination? Imagination doesn't require lazy reflections of whiny viewers to be inserted into media.

That intro ending with "SHUT UP" was everything! Never stop making these videos. This modern madness must be put down!

Don't watch the show on Amazon!! It should go without saying, but I know a lot of fans who still plan to watch it just to see what a mess they made. I think one of the best things we can all do is to NOT support this horror by watching it on Amazon. I get that some Tolkien fans might be very curious to see just how bad it really is. But remember, it doesn't matter WHY you watch it... you are still supporting it by pressing play. And there are alternatives to watch it without involving Amazon (and boosting their numbers in the process). It will be available from "alternative" sources shortly after it starts airing. So if you absolutely have to watch it, use those!

This!☝️ To paraphrase Overlord DVD: "Without respect, we reject!" Vote with your wallet, or in this case your play button. Do not give them one minute of your time.

I like how they're trying to make a movie set in a different world at a different time a f'ing "modern film". I don't understand what goes on in their head. It's Tolkien's vision, not the wokeness going on in our world.
