This entire show is the equivalent of letting kindergarteners fingerpaint all over the Mona Lisa
The perfect way to put it
that only counts if those kindergartners have a disliking for the Mona Lisa and desperately want to "improve it"
I feel like Toddlers would be less damaging.
Nah, kindergartens wouldn't fully understand what they're doing. They're just having fun painting not yo create art but to see pretty colors.
These were ADULTS who damn knew the context of what they were doing and everything they were saying.
...or EnvironMentalists.

She's just so good at searching for Sauron that after a thousand years she finally finds him randomly in the middle of the ocean.
Then let him go and didn't tell a single soul who he was even when they outright asked her or that he'd just helped them make the rings. The whole plot makes no bloody sense.
She was so hell bent on finding him that she admittedly jumped to her own demise.
She knew she would die by jumping off that stupid boat yet did it anyway.
And the writers want us to applaud her strong moral character. 🤦🏼♀️
A super-power indeeed
It's so retarded it's painful.
Like, even if it was magic on Sauron's part to divine where she'd be, why tf go to all that trouble to arrange it then?
Also... who tf jumps off a boat in the middle of the ocean and swims to shore?
Do the writers not understand that there are ocean currents you can't outswim?
Brute force searching 🤣🤣🤣
After the first episode of Rings of Power, I understand why Saron wanted to destroy everything.
They put us on Sauron's side 😅
@@ignidrakkos7546 Villains in stories are always better written, yet all the protagonists in ROP seem like antagonists, they definitely antagonised me.
Same goes for Thanos and the Marvel Universe.
I watched the first episode and I was so confused. Why were Vulcans in Middle Earth? Is this a LOTR/Star Trek crossover? Why are there 1960s era hippies in this show? What is this screwed up mess?
@@ignidrakkos7546 Sauron had a point.
It's fun when directors talk about actors as "tough". Like fighting air or a stunt double makes you "tough". Jackie-Chan is "tough". Fighting air that's supposed to be a troll doesn't make one "tough".
Jackie Chan is a LEGEND. And tough doesn't even cover it with him. Let's all go back and watch more Jackie Chan!
I know I can't stand it. "She's just so tough she swung around that foam sword & dove on the floor cushions like 5 times"
Jackie chan does his own stunts that what I call tough and about most of his own stunts almost killed him.
Simon Tolkien really emphasises that talent isn't hereditary.
There is a saying that the first generation builds, the second generation preserves and the third generation spoils something.
Might put these two men and Simon T next to it as an example.
I mean he does have a valid point that a film or TV adaptation doesn't need to 100% follow the book or the novel. Even in iconic literature such Frankenstein or Narnia there are major differences in narrative or detail between the books and the movies yet the movies are still great. You don't have to be a slave to canon. But ROP suffers from stiff acting, bad writing and screenplay which makes the viewing experience worse.
Haha
@@isaacm2374 But Jackson's movies left out a lot of stuff from the books. Jackson also had to add things like the dead army in Return of the King to move along the film. So no Simon does not have a valid point he's all about the money, he doesn't care about the Legacy of Tolkien.
@@UnkSpec immediately thought of that too. The son actually saw what Tolkien did, the struggle, the love, the care, and, finally, the glory. He saw what his father strived for, and what his father achieved out of it. So he had great respect for the world. Simon, on the other hand, only lived through the good parts, with an elder grandfather that probably only worried about spoiling him, as every grandfather is fond to do. Simon didn't appreciate the world, because he only experienced the glory. And now just as his great grandfather once spoiled him, Simon spoils the world for all fans.

I can tell that the series is shit, by looking at the people who made it. They are all worse than any real fan, even without a degree. The main problem is the company, that shits money by underpaying theire employees though.
They were not standing on Tolkien's shoulder but pissing on his grave. Everyone involved in the show, mainly the tops ie. the execs, writers, producers, director deserves every hate, dislike, criticism, etc. coming to them. I doubt any of them even read the books.
And I hope that Jeff Bezos' son (whom HE says is a huge fan of LoTR) tells Jeff every day that he allowed this treasure to be shat upon.

It was probably a dig at his father, Christopher, who kicked him out of the Estate (they eventually reconciled) supposedly for initially shilling for the Jackson films to try and make money despite Christopher telling the members of the Estate that he didn't want them involved with the then upcoming films. Simon thought they should try and make money off them somehow no matter the quality of the films. Christopher denied that this was the reason for their estrangement, though he was against adaptations and thought they could never be faithful and thought Jackson was making basic action films (J. R. R. was forced to sell the rights in the 60s due to financial trouble and there were some horrendous adaptation attempts before Jackson came along). Simon admitted later that there were "other reasons" besides his shilling that caused the estrangement but they eventually reconciled and he, unfortunately, became the head of the Estate.

That alone is more badass that anything that this cheap version of Galadriel has ever done.
And also, I don't understand how have they decided to take a cruel and cold character such as Galadriel, who has massacred her own people in cold blood, and turn her into the main strong woman character that you are supposed to love and support.

It's a very simple show, meant for very simple people. It wasn't made for people that read the books. But remember guys, in a few years this will all be forgotten, but the books will still be there, forever.
I'm not sure to whom they were catering tbh. I can't speak for those who have not read the books. I don't really know how they see or feel about it. But it seems to me the series is very bad regardless of the Lore. Especially the writing, for both plot and characters' depiction.
Take Halbrand, for example. Those of us that know the Lore, already know that "Annatar" in the books is Sauron, because it isn't a mystery for the reader. The Elves don't know that, but the readers do, because both the F.A and S.A, and the appendices in the LOTR, are written in some sort of a historical chronicle of the world of Middle-earth and its peoples. If they followed Tolkien, it would've been much more satisfying for both audiences (book readers and non), because it would've still been a surprise for the casual viewers. They would've been watching the whole thing from the POV of the Elves, so to speak, and the book readers would've been happy to see them following the Lore. But by twisting Sauron's story and trying hard to conceal his identity even from the book readers, they made a big mess out of it. That whole story didn't make any sense and it affected the Elves story, their nature, character and motivations in a very negative way, especially Galadriel.
To make a comparison with GOT, it's like twisting Ned's death, the Red Wedding, or Joffrey's death, just so they could "surprise" the book readers too. That's not how a good story work. Say you want to adapt Iliad or Aeneid, or Shakespeare. Are you going to change the most important characters and events just because people are familiar with those stories? That's the worse approach a writer could take when making an adaptation.
Physical books yes. Hold on to them. Digital destruction of the past is the future.
Wokeness will eventually crash and burn but we're still stuck in a painful period of attempted legacy destruction of the classics.
Also remember, that Rings of Power is the fantasy standard being set for Gen Z. We know it's shit because we have the benefit of context. We watched LotR in the theaters and many of us have also read the books. This generation doesn't have that knowledge and understanding to fall back on. To many of them, Rings of Power IS Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. And that's the real crime that's been comitted by these cultural vandals.
I disagree. Even if you've never heard of LotR and you're watching the show with a clean slate, there are problems with the storytelling, costumes, special effects, etc. These things are unacceptable in any show worth watching.
They had to make the Orcs as white as possible lol
Amazon should just go full send and have Kathyleen Kenedy make season 2 of "Rings of Wokeness" while wearing a shirt that says "I spit on your grave" with Tolkien's headstone on it.

The problem of "creative" people and studio execs thinking they know better and "deserve" to be able to capitalize on the creations of others is the tale as old as time. Are there no carniverous creatures in the ocean in Tolkien's world? Pretty surprising that Galadriel did not encounter any deadly creatures during her long, long swim in the ocean.
Too faithful to the book. Needed more character.
One glance by Aragorn spoke of the whole history and nobility of Gondor. A tear from Sam told of the burden of the fight against evil, of loyalty and love and loss.
No need to say "There is a tempest in me!"

@@glasletter3111 Large Fortune to us yes, he's saying to them it's small
That is how it goes!
Too faithful to anything is never, in itself, a fault. There's no such thing as too faithful to your wife, or too faithful to God, or your friends, or what you believe in. What an insane thing for that man to say.
He probably hasn't read the Fall of Numenor. It is the Faithful who are saved at the end.
When talking about an adaptation of a work, I think there's some truth in the idea that one can be too faithful to the original. Books and films are very different media and we consume them in very different ways so things that work in a book can be difficult if not impossible to translate into film and still be interesting and entertaining. Stuff like the level of detail and complexity of ideas - with a book you can stop to think about it for as long as you want and you can go back and re-read a section if you need a reminder or clarification, but it doesn't work in a film. Internal monologs are another thing that works well in print and is used a lot by some authors, but they're hard to translate into something that works on screen and even then it only works well in small amounts.
I've literally never heard of anyone complaining about a source of media being "to faithful" it's always the other way around. Man seems like a brainlet.
… let alone being too faithful to your own creation.
I think this is the generation of Tolkiens that skipped having a brain.
Only the fact the rings had different colours took me out of emersion and sidetracked the magic of the rings.
Combined with the fact that the Eleven rings were not made first
8:08 Women doing the most basic of choreography is apparently now a topic of intersectional preening. All I can think of is Carrie Ann Moss and the ridiculously elaborate choreography for The Matrix, including all the wire work to run sideways on the walls. Generic girl-boss swings a stick and she gets admiration. The bar is truly very very low.
One of the most successful film franchises ever, Simon Tolkien wants to explain to us how it was a failure. Just wow.
It's completely in line with what access media and the PR campaign has been about on this show. Like the superfans saying "I love the movies BUT..." or more recently articles saying that the trilogy has been far from perfect (the ones granting it a five star review back when nothing was about wokeness).
They must first destroy the past to bring in their new cult. Just like they do IRL with western history, telling us how bad Colombus was just so they can bring in their agenda.
I think he has some grand daddy issues
@@kaseigunsou SPOT ON mate.
The Hobbit looks like a masterpiece now.
LOTR trilogy was hated when that was released as well by the same type of book nerds with RoP. PJ was hated for changes he made. I'm wondering now after Hobbit's view of change if RoP will have the same in the future.
I guess we will find out how they will deal with this critique for the future, though I guess its still out their hands when can't use the rights Simon isn't giving them.
@@nijjijjion204 Tbh, I liked some of the changes from the book in the movies. Aragorn in the books was already accepting his role. In the movies, he grew more into it, which made it awesome. While we didn't get Dunedin along with Elladan and Elrohir, we instead got to know more about the Rohirrium, which made the loss of Theoden all the greater (and man, Bernard Hill did an amazing job with that character).
Also with the Hobbit, they have the most lore-accurate wargs. Instead of the prehistoric creatures seen in the LotR or the cartoony rat/chihuahua/hedgehog THING in RoP. There's a fan edit somewhere online (can't link it because RUclips sucks like that) where they made the three Hobbit movies more like the book and it turned out great. I recommend looking for it.

Peter Jackson's adaptation may not be perfect, but by god, his passion for the lore and the story is undeniable. He didn't push any agenda or message, he just told the story. It is a far stretch to call this series an "adapatation" as very little from the book has truly been adapted. Oh, and I think Simon needs to do a DNA test - how is he a TOLKIEN?!

As others have highlighted. The worst aspect of all of this is the amount of money these bandits made out with. 2 weeks and some well read individuals could make a better story even if they didn’t know the lore.
In a nutshell: ideology over lore.
Since Halbrand's actor had no idea that his character was Sauron at first I feel like even the writers did not know until writing the scripts and finally just threw a dart at a random character and it just happened to land on him.
That makes a TERRIFYING amount of sense.
Nah the writers knew lol, I don't know how he couldn't know though, it's so obvious, the show really smacks you over the head with all the clues, it's not subtle at all. So either he's saying that just to try to pretend that the writing isn't awful and obvious, to cover for the show, or he's really not a very intelligent person.
and then they show him standing in front of Mordor with a Max Payne smile lol
I laughed so hard at the "Numenoreans" depicted in the show.
In a real Numenor, exactly zero would be black, oriental, polynesian, persian, indian, hispanic, or anything else except an idealized _northwestern european_ ethnicity. And the Numenoreans were very protective of their literally blessed bloodline.
And, as for size and strength, think someone built like Chris Evans as Captain America as an AVERAGE Numenorean warrior. And a Chris Hemsworth would not be rare. They were powerful, large men. Not like those skinny, small idiots in the show (and their fake Tar-Miriel).
Too short. For average size try the actor who played the Mountain. Elendil was 8ft tall.
@@agonsfitness7308 Yes, but he was considered huge even by Numenorean standards. The royals/nobility were near demigods.

I had to laugh how woke minorities and non-whites are pretending to be numbernorns and how real fans like us are being ignorned by the woke globalists running the show
That's very ironic to see when the Numenorians could have been the posterboys of imperialism and hubris in an "enlightened" TV series interpretation. The fall of Numenor could have both tragic and well deserved and stayed true to the books.
Why does the story have to try and mirror reality?? I wanna watch it coz I don't wanna be in THIS world for a couple of hours🤦🏻♂🤦🏻♂

Guyladriel displayed no elvish wisdom, womanly grace, or magic power in this entire series. She was literally an idiot that ran around swinging a sword and didn’t know where the Fortress of Angbad was (despite it being very well-known). I’m still not even sure what was so enlightening about the sign she revealed in the fortress. All the elves knew Sauron had escaped and was still lurking around, they just weren’t sure what his capabilities were or who he was trying to influence. I think the worst thing the writers did was screw up the storyline so bad there is no way to work in the deceit of Anatar, the forging of the other rings, the destruction of Numenor, the building of Gondor, the fall of Eregion, etc. I still can’t believe they did this to Tolkien.
How did I not know about this channel until today? I absolutely love it! Well done guys
Giant corporations create something that isn’t a soul sucking sell out difficulty: impossible
Two things I think add to this: Christopher Tolkien basically disinherited his son Simon during the making of the Jackson films, kicking him out of the Estate, though in later years they reconciled and Simon obviously became the head of the Estate. According to Simon himself this was over Simon initially shilling for the Jackson films despite orders from Christopher that he didn't want any Estate members involved directly in the films. Christopher didn't want LOTR adapted (he thought it was impossible to adapt faithfully) and thought Jackson was turning them into basic action films (there is also the fact that his father was basically forced to sell the rights in the 60s due to financial problems and there was likely resentment in the way attempted adaptations were handled after that). Simon thought the family should try and make money off the Jackson films by attaching themselves to the films in some way and he disobeyed his father's orders. Christopher himself denied that this was the reason for the estrangement and Simon later admitted that there were other unstated reasons on top of the Jackson stuff. I believe, with not much hard evidence, that Simon allowed Amazon to make a mess of ROP for the "consultant" title he had and possibly more money.
All that ties into the second thing: In that Shippey article he gave what I thought was very positive news at the time. He essentially said that the production was supposed to use what Tolkien wrote on the Second Age as canon material for their show, enforced through the Estate (with Simon being the head of that, remember) but were allowed to fill in the blanks to get from point to point along the timeline as long as the "facts" remained intact. He also mentioned that in the production teaser that had just come out that a name was missing. I believe he said the guy that was missing was a writer or director for the whole project and that something must have changed. I don't know if that was one of the names Gary mentioned or not. But given what we got with the actual show, what he said about having to stick to Tolkien as canon clearly changed and that missing name was likely a casualty of the change. Unbeknownst to him, Shippey would be another casualty. As I said, I think Simon changed the initial stipulation to be faithful to Tolkien and likely got something in return. Shippey messed things up for the production by repeating the initial plan which was now out, and Simon got what I believe was the sole "consultant" credit on the show.
"one of the biggest reveals of the show was a font change"

I was never really a LOTR fan but I feel the fandom’s pain as a former Star Wars fan who’s watched as one of their beloved franchises was destroyed by woke activists and corporate suits.
