One side stare gave it all. The warrior witch queen that supressed her own darkness by choosing to be kind and gracious. She re - invented Galadriel and earned a place in my heart as one of the greatest actresses I 've ever seen.
As an Englishman and someone who lives 2 miles away from where JRR Tolkien grew up, I want Hollywood & Amazon to apologise for taking English mythology and folklore, bending it over and blowing its back out

I remember being at the cinema when the Fellowship of the Ring was premiering in my city, in Brazil. I remember the movie ending and a guy, with a Tolkien's book in hand, shouting "death to Peter Jackson!", mainly for exchanging Glorfindel for Arwen. Boy, how small a problem that seems today... I wish I could find that guy and ask him about this new series. It would be fun...
I think the new series would cause him to demonstrate for you the word "apoplectic".
I rewatch PJ's trilogy every year. They're my favorite movies. Still, I remember being upset about the Arwen swap. And the elves showing up at Helm's Deep (which still kinda bothers me when I think about it). But, man, those movies are god-tier compared to this shit.

Glorfindel is cool and very relevant to the history of the world, absolutely, but he's not terribly relevant in the contained story of the trilogy. The Arwen swap slims down the cast and adds a bit of meat onto the somewhat bare bones of her character in the books. I think this was a good choice, just like leaving out Tom Bombadil was.

Oh it was so so so so easy for you Amazon. You had thousands of pages of pure gold written by probably the most imaginative and creative writer of all time in Tolkien. It was right there!! You had the rights to it! You didn’t have the impossible task of creating a new world with new characters and plots and backgrounds and motivations and hope this new world you created attracted people to watch the show. It was already there!!! Millions of Tolkien lovers, young and old across the world. He created this huge and never ending world with so many different races and languages and conflicts and hero’s and villains. He did all the work for you and established one of the biggest fanbases ever. All you had to do was copy and paste from the book and put it on the screen. And millions of people would’ve loved it! An adaptation of some of the best books ever,would’ve brought you so much money and viewers. You didn’t even have to develop a plot or story there are so many plots within Tolkien’s work, that you basically could’ve just randomly picked one and fans would’ve loved it. It was so easy just take everything word for word from the books and put it on the screen. But you couldn’t do that could you, you just couldn’t make it that easy. You just had to have the nerve and ego to think you could improve Tolkiens works. You actually thought people would prefer and wanted to see your version of Tolkiens works instead of Tolkiens original works. You actually believed your tiny little brains could create something that people would enjoy more and be better than the books, which will still be popular hundreds of years from now. The people behind this show are the most worthless and useless people on this planet and should never be allowed to touch a piece of art again. Fuck you amazon, I truly hope this financial disaster ruins you.

Jackson was an idiot who altered the lore too in many ways, just not this bad. We have nothing that is really LOTR/hobbit except for 1 cartoon version of LOTR and even that only lasted halfway through the books.

It’s honestly a shame, to think that we could’ve got an incredible Lotr series with such a budget and instead they delivered a hot pile of steaming crap.
I’m currently reading the two towers and I love it. In each sentence Tolkien wrote I am amazed by the fact that there’s more creativity and writing skill than in what the ROP writers could muster in a century worth of writing.
Nevertheless, despite their wretched efforts, Tolkiens legacy will forever be incorruptible for it will always remain in the minds and hearts of those admire his work.
Last week I bought tickets to go watch a concert of the lotr soundtrack performed by a live orchestra alongside the screening of the PJ trilogy and it made me wonder, those movies came out 20 years ago, and are still rewatched and loved by millions. In 10 years time not even the ROP creators will remember their miserable and disgraceful creation and it will be forever lost to time.

So many problems with Sauron's reveal. you mentioned a lot. Here's a few more:
1. Sauron in in the heartland of the elves. Surely Guyladriel could have told Gil-Galad and they would have sent out a thousand elves on horseback and run him down and finished it right there. How did he plan to escape? The elves should have finished this show right here but the writers were too stupid to even bother explaining why this didn't happen.
2. Why the hell did Guyladriel just let him go????????? Wasn't her whole "Tempest in me" shtick all about her hatred for Sauron and her quest to hunt him down? Guyladriel should have finished this show right here but the writers were too stupid to even bother explaining why she acted so out of character. I mean, come on, they made her a one-dimensional mindless robot bent on revenge for 7.5 episodes then suddenly she's not even that anymore, with no explanation.
3. Guyladriel asks Elrond to prove he's really Elrond. She asks him to tell her something private. This is right after Sauron recreates her privite conversation with her brother Finrod. So she KNOWS that Sauron can use her memories to create fake dialog in her brain so why does she think that Elrond's answer proves that Sauron isn't just doing it again?

I recently rewatched the entire LotR and then I proceeded on to listening to the audiobooks. I have now come to the conclusion that even if they try their damnedest and even repurpose the dialogue from the films (and possibly the books by extension, not that they should even think of doing that), they won't ever hold a candle to the flame Tolkien was. In Tolkien's works, nigh every (if not every) word is purposeful and they are beautifully woven together because an author's writing is inevitably a reflection of themselves and Tolkien was a beautiful soul. These dorks wouldn't know beauty or understand its importance if it hit them in the face.

In this alternative universe Tolkien fan fiction you described, I’m finding myself rooting for Sauron. He didn’t do anything wrong according to the summary of the show, he just wanted peace and redemption and love, but because he is who he is, he is denied all that. Hopefully he gets off the rose tinted glasses and begins to see who Galadriel really is and realizes he can do better.
But hey, at least our fallen brother got the Southlands to rule, and he seems happy about it, so he got that going for him, which is nice. A little restructuring, some architecture projects and he may get the place up and running again. If the second season will focus entirely on Sauron, the heartbroken fellow getting his mind off Galadriel and on the reconstruction work of the south lands, I might even consider watching that, which would be more than the first season got out of me.
When Galadriel looked through Halbrands lineage, my girlfriend said, “omg, she’s like that psycho girlfriend who searches your phone when you’re not looking. First Karen Galadriel, now psycho gf Galadriel!” 😂

Nenya in particular had a gorgeous and memorable design, but in Rings of Power it looked like it came out of a machine in a plastic bubble for 25 cents.
The whole prologue scene of the Fellowship of the Ring, the brief backstory of Sauron and the One Ring, sums up the rings of power 1000X way better than a whole ass season of a show called Rings of Power.

So let me get this right? One of the few interesting characters in this show is Halbrand. A character that compared to Galadriel shows himself to be intelligent, empathetic, have good people skills. Who actually seems to be trying to do the right thing and leave his evil ways behind. Who calls out Galadriel for her obsessive bloodlust. And this guy is the dark lord Saroun! One of literature's greatest villain. What in the hell is going on?

Goes back to the ideology of the socialist moral-relativist cult. They don't have a crusade. They don't have morals that are absolute. They don't know what they are fighting for and why. So the show becomes like a soap opera, a "Bold and Beautiful" intro scene from 1990s, and all about the style and dialogue of the characters. The adventure and plot doesn't matter, all that matters is the characters and how they are and what they look like. They are like jewelry, show models, rather than real characters of morality or competence. Socialists often don't believe there are "absolute evils", they think the world is full of just people getting mad at each other, like a high school drama. It's because they never witnessed true evil in their lives. They know there are fascist evil, so those are the orcs, but they see the orcs not as monsters but as evil bumpkins misled by a corrupt leader for powerlust.
WOW it's almost like Sauron is called The Deceiver for a reason, and that the lie of his beauty, compassion, empathy, and love are *a literal key factor of his character and always have been*. Goddam. You dude-bro bigots who only ever watched the movies are so pathetic.
My favourite script writing was the Farfoot father giving his speech saying; how they are so loyal blah, blah, blah whilst prior to that point they’d been leaving people behind left, right and centre.

One thing I noticed from these honest reviews and the associated film clips is that Galadriel was never wrong, humble, patience, introspective, compassionate or loving. Also, she never appeared to show a shred of personal doubt until she went glossy eyed and disappointed over confronting the possibility of a moral standard of right and wrong outside of herself.

I think you are confusing the ring choice scene in Fellowship for something different entirely.
If Galadriel had taken the ring Sauron would never have recovered it - but then again the result would have been fairly unpleasant anyway.
But yes - the ring would have completely destroyed her, she was already ambitious to rule over others before she founded Lothlorien, the ring would have only amplified that a thousand fold even as it gave her the power to achieve those ambitions through control of others.
What's worse is as another elf the others may not have even detected her wearing it until they were already snagged vs having immediately sensed Sauron when he put on his ring and taken off theirs.

Specially since the main writer of House of the Dragon, Ryan Condal, was working on a Conan series for Amazon until they killed the project since a new female executive felt it was toxic masculinity. So they went with the Wheel of Time instead for their mature fantasy project.
Allowing Ryan Condal to get the Game of Thrones spin-off off the ground just in time to compete with the LotR show. They couldn't have embarrassed Bezos more if they planned it.

Yep, Celebrimbor realized his mistake with annatar and forged three rings of power to help the eldar resist and stand against the one ring. Sauron had no part in their making, just the ones made for dwarves and men.
Just by letting Sauron touch the Ore the entire point of the Rings is gone. Everything about this breaks canon to its very core. But yes, thats why they still had them because Sauron never tainted them with his spirit.

The Three were supposed to never be touched by him, so not corrupting but still subject to the One because they were still made using his knowledge and skill he taught the Elves! But basically what Sauron does in the show...is pretty basic and has nothing to do with ringlore! He does nothing with the Rings at all, even though they should be HIS invention and so designed so to be under the control of the Ring he was planning to make!
Whenever I rewatch a LOTR trilogy, I find some new details that strike me again and again. The last time I noticed one such detail during the Ride of Rohirrim scene, which is probably the most epic scene in the history of anything ever. There is a mere second where the camera focuses on a single rider, right after Eomer prepares to throw his spear, this one man rides so fiercely, screams, and pushes his horse to the limit ready to smash into the wall of orcs and kill as many of them as he can before he dies. You can see his anger and you know he does not care anymore as long as he kills at least one orc, maybe to avenge someone he lost in previous battles, his brother or his family. It's just one second and this ONE SECOND tells more fucking story than the entire season of amazon show. Luckily, we still have the trilogy and can go back to it to whenever we want to see a great movie.

The fucking Nazgul don't make sense... They literally came years after the ring was made. At least the 9 men-kings' lifetimes... cuz they were 9 men, before ghouls. LOL I was an apologist for this show until that moment. & the rings scene just made me really angry. They looked like they bought them off Etsy.
It makes sense why they ghosted Peter Jackson. The appendices to the films showed how committed he was to detail, always striving for perfection, rewriting dialogue and even whole scenes the night before a shoot. Amazon just didn't want that amount of hassle, didn't want to put that level of work in. Just write a script, "yeah that's fine, go make it by this deadline". Done. Doesn't matter if there are contradictions, or non-sensical events, or unintelligent characters constantly acting out of character.

Literally the only time I WANT a show to pull the "and it was all just a dream". I genuinely believe Galadriel will take a huge backstep, primarily being an advisor (though why the hell would she be based on season 1), and Elrond, who has decided to grow his hair and dye it black will take over as the main character.
Moving forward with something that has been proven to not only not be liked, but to be fiercely hated, is only out of ego at best, however it feels malicious.
When Annatar the Lord of Gifts is brought in to Eregion after being denied entrance to the other Elven Kingdoms (because Lore/book accurate Gilgalad is not an idiot), we are made to believe that Ringcraft is a secret mystical skill. A skill that requires YEARS and a lot of dedication to master, even with the guidance of Annatar. This show just treated Ringcraft like a high school freshman group project. Celebrimbor WAS a complex character, who inherited some of the faults of his deeply flawed master craftsman grandfather. Little by littler he either realized there is something wrong with Annatar, or he wishes to surpass Annatar in his own hubris, and makes the Elven Rings in secret. Amazon LOL watevs it's season finale make some rings of POWER now please.
I believe annatar left just before celebrimbor made the elven rings. He went to mordor to make the one ring. I always imagined celebrimbors motivation was to surpasse his grandfather and be able to maintain what the elves had built in Middle earth.
Hence why the elven rungs are not used for battle or anything flashy. Then when Sauron makes the one ring and celebrimbor realizes that he erred and instead of acting like feanor, he chooses better and makes sure sauron cannot get the 3 rings and he resists Sauron to the death. So, he perished but he learned some humility ere he died.
Let's also conveniently overlook that the elvish rings were forged last.
And as soon as the One Ring is created the elf-cancer protection the showrunners have falsely given to the Three is lost. Or will that conveniently be "forgotten"?

Tolkiens work is never about you. Do you see any of the lotr and hobbit films showing anything thats about the casts? Or any political messages? Nope.
Show had no character arch’s or growth. It had character you actively didn’t like and questioned their intelligence.

I just watched an explanation of the life of Sauron in the 2nd age by Nerd of the Rings. There's so much Amazon could've done. Like, Sauron changed his appearance into the friendly Annatar and then spent hunderds of years working together with Celebrimbor only to deceive him once he created his own Rings of Power and the One Ring. So hundreds of years of deception. They must have developed a huge friendship by the time the deception became clear. What a big great episode it could've been once Sauron reveiled his hidden agenda to Celebrimbor.
Instead, Amazon spend seconds to Annatar's 'deception'. Oh maybe you should mix mithril and metal together! And that was it. Sure, they maybe spent a few hours together to try and forge the rings, but against the 300 years Tolkien has described those are nearly minutes. Even seconds.
The only reason I could find why Amazon changed this entirely is to let a woman play the lead role. Because it was not Galadriel that noticed that Sauron was still at large. It was, for God's sake, Gil Galad! The high king that refused to believe Sauron was still active in the series! So we all have to think that if it was not for Galadriel Sauron would not have risen...but wait...oh...the way Amazon took it, now we must believe that BECAUSE of Galadriel Sauron has risen due to the many persuasions she had to undertake to get him to the Southlands.
Also, so they changed Annatar to Halbrand. The only reason for that is that Amazon thought they should also make Tolkien fans guess who is Sauron. Wow, this series is so completely falling apart more and more once I hear more about the origin stories... I hope it gets cancelled.
this is so infuriating, I am absolutely enamored by the depth and complexity of Tolkien's lore. from Eru Ilúvatar and the history of the Valar, Melkor and Sauron. The Istari and their missions. The world of LOTR has so many layers, each as interesting as the other in their own right. I love the books, the games and movies (not the hobbit trilogy... sorry) .
I hate what this show is doing to the story, and characters with my whole heart. As a person of colour, I don't mind the introduction of characters of colour, but for the love of good writing and story-telling stick true to the lore.

During the council of elrond gandalf describes how everyone realized they had been betrayed by Sauron. I wished they had adapted that to film. Basically Sauron was believed to be an ally. He was instrumental in the creation of the nine rings (I can't remember if he was instrumental in the creation of The seven Rings for the dwarves). He never laid a hand on the 3. When the one ring was created. Sauron's voice could be heard from far off chanting the black speech and Celebrimbor knew he had been betrayed. That would have been so cool to see.
Sauron (disguised as Annatar) taught the Elves how to forge Rings of Power, they then forged 16 Rings of Power (after forging several lesser rings as skill building practice). Sauron oversaw and guided the smiths during the Forging of the 16 Great Rings/ the Rings of Power. After Sauron left Eregion, Celebrimbor forged the Three without Sauron's direct involvement but according to the process Sauron invented (which why they were also subject to the One). Most people forget or do not comprehend that all 16 Rings of Power (the Seven and the Nine) were originally made for and used by the Elves. It was only after the war of Sauron and Elves when Sauron gained possession of the 16 Rings that Sauron gave some to men and some to Dwarves as a back-up plan since his plan to control Elves via the Rings had failed. The way the Elves knew they had been betrayed was because they were wearing and using the Rings of Power when Sauron put the One on for the first time, they perceived they & all they wrought with the Rings would be slaves to Sauron's will. That is why in the books Sauron waits years before forging the One to give the Elves time to become addicted to the Rings's powers.
Yes there are so many ways the show could have stayed true to the lore and produced a great show with interesting and exciting scenes like when the Elves find out the truth about the Rings.

I refused to watch the Rings of Power because the Silmarillion was never meant to be a book. It was a bunch of notes Tolkien made when writing LOTR that his son later tried to compile into a book. This was fated to be a disaster before Peter Jackson made it out of middle... school [music swells, end scene].
Never laughed so hard at a tv-show like this one.
I saw it best in a comment on slashdot "It follows the familiar pattern of wearing an existing, often beloved property as a skin suit. There is no attempt to be true to the source/original. Instead the show runner comes in with a story they want to tell, for which the property must be 're-imagined' to fit that story. It's like slapping Pepsi branding on a can of surstromming, then berating the customers when long-time Pepsi drinkers vomit on opening the can."

The part where Sauron and Galadriel are screaming at each other was one of the most cringe inducing scenes of the show, no small task mind you.
No one of those people read the books (and by books I mean ALL of them including the 12 volumes of Middle-Earth History). For those who told me I was just being hyperbolic: I saw this coming the minute I heard Amazon bought the rights.
Incredibly, Celebrimbor was done way better in a game, Shadows of Mordor, than in this disaster. That elven smith is an absolute beast of a vengeful, proud wraith. This one is a sad clown.

The hobbits should’ve been on screen for like 2 minutes in episode 1. A funny little aside that the main characters encounter to highlight how uninvolved they are. A hobbit didn’t do anything relevant until the third age. That’s how it should be.

Best case scenario they could have played a part in Hiding the meteor man from the three Stooges. Atleast then they could get some character fleshed out and even have the stranger (if it's Gandalf) to have a reason to befriend them as set up for the Hobbit trilogy.

Gary, watched your review with my girlfriend, we're both in our 30s, loved LoTR since 2000 (when we were 8). I have read everything Tolkien ever wrote (including his biography by Humphrey Carpenter). Didn't watch the show, because I consider it a psychological abuse, my girlfriend was nauseous after the review, couldn't believe, that it was actually reality. I am going to re-read The Silmarillion again next week, just to calm my nerves. This show is a piece of work. Thank God another season is so far away. Keep fighting the good fight. We will win, though this abomination will foerver stay on this planet.
Just dont watch it. U also do not need to be pissed or scared of the second season. Again just dont watch it.
I think thats the best thing to do. If enough other people do the same over time the studios will adopt. In the end they want to make money:).

I feel your pain.I've been a Tolkien fan since I was about 7, when I read the trilogy. I refuse to watch the show, I'm afraid it would somehow affect the way I think of and remember Tolkien's books. I've been re-reading the Atlas of Middle Earth to get me through these last few weeks.
I think a better idea would be to tell stories about other people in middle earth we've never heard of. How about an elven soldier suffering survivors guilt from the War of the Jewels, a human girl getting separated from her family in an orc attack who flees into the forest and is found by a group of rangers only to grow up and become their best leader through experience and hard learning, a dwarf city under the Blue Mountains trying to rebuild after the destruction of Beleriand, or maybe an entirely new continent south of middle earth where all manner of different races and cultures are found? There is enough room in Arda for an all inclusive cast, but let's not wreck Tolkien's work by mucking with the established lore.
