Well. There is an echo. Apologies, it ends at 1:31
Thanks for joining me, this song is awesome:)
I kinda liked it. It had a surreal vibe.
@@Yosef1952 Thank you, it did add a layer to the video. What kind of layer it added, I'm not quite sure, heheh
Was a bit freaky but speaking of Echoes that is the name of a great song by Pink Floyd which took up the whole 2nd side of the album Meddle (the album before Dark Side).
@@DiconDissectionalReactions Darth Vader's nephew??
Eh, stuff happens, right? Don't sweat the small sh*t man. Love yer content!
Listen to Mandolin Rain
Bruce played with the Grateful Dead when their keyboard player died.
I called them Bruce Hornsby and the Deranged.
A couple other good Bruce Hornsby songs that are similar sounding with the piano are ‘Mandolin Rain’, ‘Valley Road’, ‘Every Little Kiss’
LOVE Mandolin Rain!
I second that, those are great songs !
Mandolin Rain!!!!! Yaasssss.
Great choices
Ask you mom and dad about Walking In Memphis by Marc Cohn. You will love it.
I grew up in the south in the 60's and 70's. I distinctly remember getting on a bus to go downtown with my Dad, and I ran to the back of the bus to sit because I wanted to look out the big window in the back, and my Dad firmly leading me to the front of the bus after telling me we couldn't't sit back there. Being about 4 years old, I naturally had to ask why we couldn't sit back there. He said, "because that's where the colored people sit." You know I couldn't just leave it at that. I had to ask why. Ultimately the answer he gave me was "because that's just the way it is." I think that's one of the answers he gave to a lot of my questions about things that were not right. It was the best answer he could give me at that time.
I will never understand how people who can't have empathy for others but then call themselves Christians. They are giving Christians a bad name. I am older and grew in the time of civil rights and I was taught that it was my duty to stand up for my fellow man. I was also taught to help those less fortunate. There but by the grace of God go I.
It’s clear they do not believe in God because they would want to show love. It’s up to God to judge the sinners. Romans chapters 12 and 13 gives wonderful counsel for Christians living in an unrighteous world.
I drift between spiritual and atheist, myself. But I will always have strong respect for anyone, of any faith or none, who makes an effort to see in someone else, an image of who they might have been, if circumstances had been different. Who tries to make things better. When knowing they can't fix everything, still tries to help even just some around the edges. I don't care whether someone calls it "living the gospel" or "just be a good human". Mad respect for *anyone* who maintains the ability to give a damn about people in this often crazy world.
simple answer, people who don't have empathy for others aren't true Christians. Curious why you're singling out one group as "people who can't have empathy"? It's unfortunately everywhere. :(
My Church (Catholic) teaches me that anyone who receives the Sacrament of Baptism is a Christian. How faithful a Christian is to Christ...well, that's another matter, and it's not up to me to make the final judgment.
But I know what you mean. Some Christians are such bad witnesses, it's horrible. I'm not the best witness either.
@@sjw5797 I not the best either but attend Catholic school K-12 and the nuns held up as heroes the young people who marched for civil rights. When some of these young people from our state were killed during those marches we were told they gave their lives for a worthy cause. I often feel in today's world I see people hold themselves up as Christians but will never support any program that helps those less fortunate but turn and look away from the suffering.
Bruce is such a great artist. This was his first and biggest hit but he’s consistently put out great music right to the present day
I listened to this album massively in the eighties. Great soft rock for chilling. Great lyrics...beautiful piano. Another artist of the same style is Gerry Rafferty. Funny, loved Hornsby and Gerry Rafferty, Jackson Browne and Elton John...all great piano men but I never cared that much for Billy Joel. Go figure
Bruce has a totally distinctive sound to his piano playing. As you experience more music you'll get to recognize his playing on other people's songs here and there. From the 80s on he unleashed a mess of "9th chords" into the songwriting world.
Great pianist. I heard a DJ say after playing this song "Kinda makes me wish I had kept up with my piano lessons. Damn you, Bruce Hornsby!"
Don't listen to the people who tell you to stay in a box so they will be more comfortable!!! Only listening to one style of music is like only eating one food forever...who wants to do that?? I am 55 (56 in 23 days) and I like all kinds of music, Tupac was a musical genius and I appreciate and respect his music. You are doing a fine job Young Daniel, keep on keepin' on. Peace and love.
I think you should listen to Mandolin Rain by the same band I believe it's a much better song
A fantastic song. Listen to it again. He's right. Things don't change unfortunately. This song is as important today as when it came out if not more so.
Exactly right. ...they said... That's just the way it is, ah but don't you believe them. When this was new, I used to listen to it several times a day. Also, I think music videos are like just about anything else - if they're well done, they're well done; if they're not, they're not.
I wish Bruce Hornsby had put out more songs and had a bigger career. He's a superb keyboardist and I love great piano from artists like Billy Joel and Elton John. But that's ok. For me this is a song for the ages. Still hoping to hear some Jackson Brown THE PRETENDER, FOUNTAIN OF SORROW and SONG FOR ADAM. - TRUE FILM FAN. 🎹🎼🎵
You named all the piano men that I did...except Garry Rafferty. I too would love to see him do some Ja Keon Browne
High time for some Jackson Brown indeed, I'm sure Daniel would appreciate his lyrics and music.
Don't forget the two-hit wonder Al Stewart. "Year of the Cat," and "Time Passages."
.....Late for the Sky.
Nothing prettier than a melancholy piano.🎯
This Canadian walks across the bridge in Selma AL every March 1st hoping it doesn't have to be this way.
Absolute class music from mid 80's for sure. Bruce Hornsby the man🤣👍
He has so many hits and videos . The best man to tickle the ivorys .
You know you are listening to a masterpiece when you can follow the lyrics, understand every word, and still enjoy the music, from composition to instrumental execution. Bruce Hornsby and Steve Winwood executed this to perfection during their prime success in the 80's. Also, 5 minute song. 26 minute Daniel video. Dissection personified.
Bruce Hornsby has made SO many fantastic songs. "Look out any Window", "Lost Soul", and "Mandolin Rain" are a few great examples.
Daniel I was a teenager in 1965 when the civil rights act was passed. The point being in the song things haven’t changed at all and continue into 2021. Basically the haves and the have Nots still exist.
:) Daniel,
I am so proud to be a patron of your channel. Your intelligence, maturity and insight is on such a high level. As an older person, it is very reassuring that some young people understand past struggles and the wrongs of the past. ♡
Bruce Hornsby!!! I was very excited to see his name in my Notifications! He has quite a few really good songs. My favorite is Mandolin Rain. (One of my favorite instruments to listen to is a mandolin)
Great reaction & analysis!!
Always loved this one
A demeaning joke is not a joke. So, it's not meant as a joke. But the man in the suit enjoyed being mean. Imagine two different voices, one telling someone what they can do and what they can't, a second voice saying, don't believe it. I agree with you on the videos. If the song comes with a video, the video is important in explaining the song. Live performances: only a few artists perform as well live as their studio performance, so I recommend listening to the studio version first. Rush is one group that is every bit as good live, if not even better.
I commend you for studying history. By connecting the dots and understanding history you can get a clearer vision of where we are today. It helps us see through the smoke screen many love to put up to keep the statue quo. “The problem is not that people are uneducated. The problem is that they are educated just enough to believe what they’ve been taught. And not educated enough to question what they’ve been taught.”
Unknown
Racism as a cancer is a great analogy. Oh, and by the way, your 'rambling' video is quite clear and concise. Age too often never brings wisdom. You got it now, no worries.
He played on the End of the Innocence by Don Henley of the Eagles
Dylan does a cover of that song. Interesting.
Keep doing your own thing. Don’t let anyone put you into a box about having to listen to only one type of music!
This is a great song
I fell in love with piano, listening to Bruce Hornsby! This was a staple in my play list, with many others! They’re awesome in all of their music! ❤️
Hey little boy you can't go where the others go cause you don't look like they do, some of the powerful lines in this epic song. This song was released in September 1986 as the second single from their debut album. The song made explicit reference to the Civil Rights Movement. Bruce can sing, play and write and will be touring when this mess PANDEMIC is over. Another of his songs worth listening to is " EVERY LITTLE KISS"
There is a song by Don Henley called "End of the Innocence" in which Bruce plays the piano. Beautiful, just like this one. Also, there is a song by R.E.M. called "The Last Date", which is a cover of an old Floyd Cramer song, which is even better. Great piano in that one too.
You know, I've never considered how overtly political this song is before. (Probably for similar reasons to why it took me years to realise the layers to Ben Vereen singing "Mr. Cellophane" on The Muppet Show - I was so young when I first encountered both that it simply didn't occur to me.)
Not only is this a great song, but the arrangement is absolutely wonderful, with the implementation of the strings as an accompaniment. It's just perfectly put together. and it carries such a hard hitting message. One of the great gifts from the music of 1987.
He is a fantastic piano player and wonderful live in concert. I hope you check out more of his music!
Bruce is really talented, and this is a great number. You might also like Bruce's number "Every Little Kiss", which makes me happy every time I hear it.
Bruce certainly has a unique way of playing the piano which works very well. The only constant I know is change (Greek Philosopher Hiraclitus but also used by Randy California of Spirit). History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes. Mark Twain
Daniel, great that you reacted to this. If you want to hear some more great piano by Bruce, check out "Look Out Any Window" from his second album !!! His first two albums have so much fantastic music!!!!
"Passed a law in '64 , to give those that ain't got a little more, but it only goes so far" What a line, it always gets me. Amazing Pianist, Amazing Song. I can remember being almost 2 years
old, and staring at my mother, crying, in front of a Black and White TV, as Walter Cronkite announced that President Kennedy had been shot in Dallas TX. This song always make me
remember that! Thanks Daniel
In 1984, there was a band where the songs and the video went together like hand in glove. They were called The Eurythmics. They made some of the best videos, ever: Love Is A Stranger, Beethoven, I Need A Man, Sweet Dreams, etc.
Strange that some would even think of discouraging you and others your age from appreciating older music. Especially being that so many complain about how today's music can't hold a candle to what came before. I welcome your curiosity and enthusiasm, Daniel. Like I'm sure it is for many others, watching you get into these is the closest I can get to hearing them again for the first time. I mean, yeah, it is possible to date music, so maybe music isn't always timeless, but its effect on the soul is!
This SONG with Bruce HORSNBY and the Noisemaker tell you father to ear!!
Thanks you from Argentinaaa!!! 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷❤❤!!
A very good lesson in how to play a piano from Bruce Hornsby.
So lovely and easy to listen to.
"No One Ever Is To Blame" by Howard Jones is similar in many ways. Also from 1986. Worth a listen.
Don't let the turkeys get you down on your music choices. (oldster saying from back in the day.) I'm black and I can't say i'm a fan of rap music. I can't say i'm not either. I've always been one of those top 400 of everything kinda person. Top 400 best operas, top 400 best folk songs, metal, rap, etc. If it's good, and i happen to hear it, i will like it. I think most music-lovers just go with what they love. Keep doing what you're doing. Living from the heart and sharing from the heart. We, your subscribers, love what you do.
I've heard this song hundreds of times but never realized the meaning, I live in LA and in just a few miles you can see row after row of tents on the sidewalk and just a couple of miles away you can see people living in lavish homes
Saw them in 1987. What a great show with top flight musicians.
The way you do research the way you do your reactions is the reason why you're the best reactor out there We learn something new with songs that we've heard dozens and dozens of times. Fantastic classic from the '80s I love the piano as well and I can't wait for you to check out other artists I'll definitely be looking for an LP or two to send. Keep up your great work Thanks so much
Used to work the nightshift back in the late 80's. This album was my chill music when I would get home from work. It's a masterpiece from start to finish. His piano playing can lift my spirit like no other.
Great song. Always gets me goosebumps.
Man, that whole song, but especially THAT PIANO, makes me regret quitting piano as a teenager. Maybe if I'd been playing ever since then I could try to play this song with something close to the same feeling.
This was a great pop/rock hit and made Bruce Hornsby popular. I never pursued his career, but I have the feeling, musically he can do a lot more/different things than this.
Hey Daniel. So glad you're checking this one out. Bruce hornsby is an amazing musician with some great music. I still get goose bumps. Listen to Mandolin rain. 🤗
Now you’re talking.
Love Bruce and The Range.
Try....Down the Road Tonight 😍
Glad you were listening to Hornsby's singular style. He adds notes to the chords, so we're listening to more than pop...jazz-pop. All his stuff is laced with these beautiful "thick" chords. And he's sorely underrepresented by reactors online. You're one of the few! Thanks! :)
Music videos ARE an art form. Like most art, some are good and some are not. Disturb's 'Sound of Silence' and Genesis' 'Mama' and 'You're No Son of Mine' are great examples of videos that work and IMHO great art. I too think this video is a wonderful compliment to the music.
Thanks for your reactions to music of our lives . Here in western NY there are great music learning centers .No matter the genre, hope all youth take time to experience ,be touched by and continue life's musical journey
I once had the pleasure of being at the table for a dinner at which John Hornsby, Bruce's brother and cowriter, was also present. He cracked a joke about their song "Mandolin Rain" - "We weren't sure how to follow that up..."French Horn Cold Front?"
I love this song for the message and the piano! When an artist can elicit emotion and do it in such a beautiful way it finds a place in my heart! Don't listen to the haters! We like what we like. Being honest with yourself can only help you on your journey. Great reaction Daniel!
Such a talent, both as a writer and performer. He played piano on the epic 'I Can't Make You Love Me' by Bonnie Raitt (and also a great video).
One of the best songs of all time. He would really enjoy it I'm sure. Bonnie Raitt and Annie Lennox are definitely 2 favorite solo female artists.
YIKES. I apologize for yacking so much.
Check out Hornsby's duet with Bonnie Raitt performing I Cant Make You Love Me. Magic !
What I like about your reactions is that you THINK about the meaning of the song. Yes, this song is about racism and discrimination. the message is that we can change. It even says that the law was changed in '64 but that did not change hearts and minds. the message is that things will slowly change over time that we all need to be part of the change.
Great reaction….. and very insightful & thoughtful discussion after….. great to hear wise talk online!! Thank you! Can’t wait to hear what else you have to say!
Hornsby is a super talented artist .
I've seen him in many incarnations. You should check out "Spider Fingers" with the Noisemakers.
You’re comment about music videos is spot on, The Smith’s didn’t make music videos which was out of the norm for popular 1980s bands, their American record company made a video for their song “How Soon is Now” and released it without their approval because they wanted it seen on MTV
I'm 60 year old white male and I've seen Bruce with THE Dead. The man has endless talent. Tupac put the spin on this song only he could and made it an even better song.
He was great with the dead, Jerry looked pleased as punch to have his counter melody and taste.
You must be mad.
I just subscribed 😊. I love your reactions and that you are interested enough to take the time to do research after, and provide intelligent commentary about the music and lyrics and your personal thoughts. I'm a 57 year old mom of 24 & 28 year old boys who are also smart, sweet, and finally(!) maturing, but I must say, you are quite impressive as a 17 year old! I have a feeling you are going to very successful in what ever you choose to do in the future!
For a different sound from Bruce, check out the song "Cruise Control" from his solo album "Hot House". It's the last song, to my knowledge, that Jerry Garcia played on before he passed. It is an INCREDIBLE song. On a personal note, I had the fortune to meet Hornsby after a show and he is the most humble guy. He's also VERY funny! One of my favorite musicians ever and his sound is constantly evolving. I hope you enjoy hearing more from him!
I had a dream with this song in it. No radio or tv while sleeping the day you put this out.
One of my very favorite songs. The theme of the song is all about social injustice, especially racial injusticE in the USA. We still have those problems, we haven't learned as we witnessed last year.
This song is so good. I only know one other song by him, "Mandolin Rain", which is really good too, but "The Way It Is" is a masterpiece, imo. Musically it reminds me of a song called "Walking in Memphis" by Mark Cohn, which you should definitely check out if you don't already know it. :) Edit: I'm not a fan of rap either and it sucks that some people have said what they said to you... it is so cool that your friends are checking out grunge, Billy Joel, jazz, the fifties and I LOVE listening to you check out the songs on this channel. Back in the nineties and early 2,000's I had a friend who was into Elvis.. like REALLY into Elvis. Lol I thought it was so funny at the time but it is awesome that we have so many different kinds of music that different people can connect with. Music is the language for the things we can't say with words, imo. Great commentary on this song. "Love your neighbor as yourself"..
Timeless
Yes, it does have an 80's sound. But when this song came out it sounded so different from everything else at that time, the socially conscious lyrics, the Keith Jarrett style piano. I thought it actually sounded more like something from the 70's. Out of place but I loved it.
We Are Legion ! { That's Just the Way it is.......Something will Never Change }
Well spoken! Some videos actually adds to the song, makes the message clearer - makes it feel more.
Bruce isa a master today too!!
Love this song and a bunch of others on this album. Great stuff.
Love this tune. This song is along the lines of Phil Collins and David Crosby's 'Thats Just the Way It Is' (which may have been inspired by this tune). It is an ironic message. NO! It is not the way it is. We CAN change things!
If we want to, yes. Untold millions of us don't, though...
This dude/Band is from Hampton Virginia originally, I saw them for free when I was stationed in Norfolk, VA, his debut record ( Which this was the first released single) is damn near perfection, not a bad track on it this was 1986 and he had just come out and was playing a free to the audience show on a Pier in Virginia Beach! It's a song about alot of things, Racism, Sexism, and such
Daniel 6lu are very right where the artist is involved to enhance the song by guiding the video their way!
Bruce Hornsby is a talented artist and I did enjoy this song quite a lot when it came out. If you were getting something from the lyrics you will definitely want to try "What It's Like" by Everlast. Thanks as always for your thoughtful and insightful reaction, Daniel!
I have to say that I love it that a young person is listening to the great old songs of my youth, sorry for the folks who think otherwise, also, kudos to your friend who likes 50s music, I didn't appreciate it when my parents listened to it and the 60s music but I learned to love it! Buddy Holly rocks! My 42 year old son asked me if there were reaction videos of people my age (63) listening to rap and hip hop, I told him that I stopped when I found you and have no idea about that. PS, I think that you should listen to the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" one of the coolest songs ever. Take care.
A lot of people don't realize or were not taught that when slavery was prevalent in the United States only 8% of the population actually owned slaves...
It really wasn't as popular a thing in America as people assume or have been told it was. I'm from New England and it was never taught as anything popular here.
I hope you've been taught it was considered a problem the founding fathers knew they had to deal with at some point in time but it was more important to make sure the states formed a union and stayed together.
Youth is the flash of hope you are hearing. Youth are the path to change.
Awesome song! 💕 🎼 🎶 Great to watch your unscripted “mining for meaning and history” with songs you react to. That level of thought is what makes your channel a cut above the rest. Bruce Hornsby has some great collaborations with other artists. Hope you check out some other Hornsby & the Range songs. 👍
Bruce really is the master of the Melancholy Hit. The Valley Road tells a really tragic story but the music behind it is super catchy; Look Out Any Window is railing against Climate Change and Corporate Excess while disguising itself as a banger. Mandolin Rain is just an amazing song, filled with longing and regrets but featuring amazing piano (and, of course, mandolin) work.
Ticking by Elton John.......the lyrics is a reason nobody does a reaction but the song was a foreshadowing of times to come. You ROCK dude!!!
He played with some other folks and produced some terrific stuff. Check out I Can't Make You Love Me with Bonnie Raitt. He also played with the Grateful Dead in the early '90's. There are some videos of him with them on YT that are well worth your time.
Hornsby did that song with Bonnie Raitt??? I LOVE that song and never knew that! Thanks for sharing that info.
Never listen to folks that say hi back to any other place or where you are from musically. It is always good thing to expand ones horizons. If you like it good, if not there is growth in progress which is never bad thing. Glad to see you explore. Enjoy
I love this song. For some reason there seemed to be a lot of dislike for it when it came out; I never understood why.
Great dissection.
I love that bit just before the end here where you back away from certain music, illustrating it by backing away from the camera literally...you seem to recede suddenly, both visually and aurally, about 200 feet, and it's hilarious...
Cool reverb! This song was refreshing to hear at the time, as the radio hits were all new wave re-treads. What a piano riff!
ps, check out TransAtlantic's Black as the Sky...a very fun song from this "supergroup". Live version is the best.
This is one of your best reactions! Bruce has a very unique and very recognizable style/sound on piano, and also his vocals.
I would like to recommend/request that you do a reaction to a song which features an amazing female vocalist that I don't think you have gotten into yet.....and the song also features Bruce on piano! Also, the video for the song is super well-done, and definitely adds to the impact of the song.
Look up "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt (pronounced like Rate).
Thanks for your deep thinking, Daniel! That's one of the things I like so much about you!
;)
He's saying "That's the way it is" as what everyone says, but "Don't you believe it!" meaning that's not the way it is.
I'm firmly in the 'video killed the radio star' camp. MTV just changed the focus for most artists to writing videos instead of songs. Doesn't mean there aren't some great videos out there but I still want to hear albums produced as singular works of art.
Bruce used to play with The Grateful Dead in the 90s.
Great social comment song. Went to #1. 🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
Bruce Hornsby is the only person to ever play an accordion on stage with the Grateful Dead, both before he joined them officially, and after, plus using his keyboard and vocal skills, an amazing musician and person.
Enjoy living outside of a musical box! Music like all art shares thoughts, stories, feelings, and emotions. Some good. Some bad. Some music is better at relating to a particular person than perhaps a different piece or style of music. I like a wide variety of music from the past 7 centuries. Just like I can appreciate art from all over the world and throughout all of history.
