I remember in high-school, we were watching a documentary about the rise of the nazi party and in the film a few seconds of horst weisel played. Immediately after a handful of us started humming "wondering about my loved ones " to ourselves. Some really surprised looks around the classroom resulted.
You my friend are one cultrued mofo. You and your high school buddies
Haha so recognizable
I'd start humming it for a completely different reason

Wait ... that's how I knew the Horst Wessel Lied !
The first time I hear it for real on a documentary as a kid I thought "Wait. How do I know what the Nazi anthem sounds like ?"
Never made the connection.
I had a similar experience. Once saw a documentary and heard the Nazi anthem. Was like "wait why do I know that"!?!?
I actually heard this on a documentary when I was 7, after having played Wolfenstein 3d that very day. I was visibly confused. "Wait, why are they playing Wolfenstein theme in this documentary, and why does it have words?"

@@SCA84 I'm going off my memory, so I could very well be wrong. But in my mind, I thought 0:00 was the intro where it says PC-13 for "Profound Carnage" with that blue screen. And then the main menu was 2:05 where it's episode select and settings and all that.

For as long as I can remember I have loved this game and its music, but knowing the names of the songs gave them a more emotional quality. “Wondering about my Loved Ones” implying BJ misses his family made the song much more sad, but also more enjoyable to me. This game is a classic.
I can agree with that. Maybe in the next 20-30 years of my life, this game will be a classic. I love both this game, and DOOM, such a great duo. DOOM & Wolfenstein forever 🫶🏻

P.O.W!!!! THIS IS IT! My FAVE track from Wolfenstien 3D... :D
If you pay attention, you can hear bits of the songs from all four main branches of the military on it.
1. Marine Corps Hymn (Halls of Montezuma)
2. Army Song (The Army Goes Marching Along)
3. Navy Hymn (Anchors Aweigh)
4. Air Force Song (The Wild Blue Yonder)
Interesting fact for you guys... :)

@@cedgamer7080 If you're joking - nice one.
But just in case you're not - Horst Wessel is an early nazi partisan. He died in a riot IIRC, and kind of became the nazi martyr.
It played in the beginning
@MacHappy doesnt change the fact that you are a redditor
9:35 was my jam
The other version of the Horst-Wessel-Lied in this game is much scarier to me. The high pitched and empty sounding instrumentation and the change from major to minor is enough to get me proper psyched.
yes indeed
That was the idea since it played in the first level of Episode 2 - Operation Eisenfaust where the player discovers the truth behind the Nazi's Secret experiments - reanimating bodies to create a new undead mutant soldier hybrid.
18:21 still gives me chills all these years later
The purple, green algae lined walls is all I can think of. I watched my mom play that level a lot when I was maybe 5 years old back in 1994

I have been humming the Horst Wessel Lied for many years at school without knowing its origin. ;w;
I remember I sung Erika at a gas station without knowing what song it was
Yikes
I’ve accidentally hummed it once or twice thanks to all the fond times of playing Wolfenstein 3D, but thankfully telling folks it’s the title track of the granddaddy of all FPS games seems to assuage folks’ fears that I’ve gone completely loco, just sayin’. 😋

1992. 12 yrs old. My friend’s house. 7 PM TIL 1 or 2 am. His parents bedroom was far away. They didn’t care that we ate the chips and drank all the soda. Now I’m quarantined with two infants. Life was good in 1992 lol. Still is ;)
1992 7 years old and loving Wolfenstein 3D with my late wonderful dad who died 3 years ago . Wolfenstein 3D was his favorite game. So naturally to this day it's still my favorite PC game. It's a shame PSX never got a port of Wolfenstein 3D . It would've been awesome on PSX.
I had no idea Robert Prince was behind this. He's so good!
The March to War just brings back memories of running, hiding, and generally being scared shitless from Mecha Hitler.

YES. This one stopped me dead in my tracks. It's just so good. The buildup, the intensity, and the composition are all genius. I'm playing through it on hard and I just stop and marvel at how incredible it sounds with some Yamaha HS7s.
11:56 This is the one that's been stuck in my head for like....25 years or more! Pretty sure this was also used in a level or two of Spear of Destiny. It set the perfect ambience for those creepy silent zombies as I recall.
P.O.W. is a mish-mash of the US Marines/Navy & Air Force anthems. Learned that by watching The Right Stuff as a kid.
I think I also heard a piece of the Dixie song.
49:21 funk you is by far the masterpiece, it's the one I remember the most from my childhood too. Weird that it's such a different tune than the others too... Have a funky day!
4:35 is like e1m1 but from wolfenstein xD
I've always thought that. The first levels of both games have music with a very similar feel.
It's funny. The track at 9:35 (P.O.W.) really made you feel that you should hurry in the game. Now I analyze it (later as an adult) I notice the sound in the background at 11:00. Sounds like a ticking clock. And also it seems to be on 120 / 60 bpm (I watched the windows clock tick perfectly with the beat). Amazing.
Nice observation! The end melodies are supposed to be prisoners singing songs from their own factions too
Right at 9:59
Marines: "At the halls of montezuma"
Army: "Where the army goes rolling along"
Navy: "Anchors aweigh, my boys!"
Air Force: "At 'em boys, Give 'er the gun!"
I learned that from another comment.
@@ThePerfectTrip That just blew my mind. Thanks!
You think about the big picture and you realize its all a bunch of US military themes.

Enemy Around the Corner is such a great song. Sounds like a film score for a classic late 60s WW2 movie.
In 4th grade a friend introduced me to this game by completing the boss fight with Hitler while I watched. Hitler's death was instantaneously the most violent thing I had ever seen in my life by a giant magnitude, I almost threw up. In hindsight I sort of miss that innocence.
I think back in the day, Seeing this title screen you would think it is some CG bullshit but "Surprise Surprise", it is ACTUAL in-game footage!

I like how Bobby Prince evolved the melody from 30:12 Into the Dungeons to Doom's E2M2 Demons from Adrian's Pen (about halfway through) there's a lot of touches like that.

wolfenstein, the grand daddy of all first person shooters
After so many years I was surprised to learn what the title music actually was.
I forgot to turn off this game on my grandfathers laptop, he went to the library to use his laptop there and when he opened the laptop the intro music (Horst Wessel lied) started playing really loud, everyone was staring at him. He tried turning off the laptop but the music was still stuck , he had to dissasemble the battery from the laptop and try apologizing to people around him.
Jesus Christ! Or should I say: Nazi Hitler! 😂
This soundtrack is great. It is accurate and kills it with very few wasted notes.
wondering about my loved ones is the song that reminds me of this game the most
Wow, this really brings back the memories... Back in the day, I played this game until I defeated it (escaped), and I wasn't even a gamer (but I was hooked on this one). Good times...

Horst-Wessel lied! So much yesss!!!1 I wish I could show that pic and this game to the very people who had to endure that awful song (and all it stood for) so many times - revenge!
My great grandfather saw this game before he died, he lived through world War 2, this game must have really spoke to him. He used to have an old vynal record of the first menu music and even had a bunch of pictures of him at cons with guys dressed like the enemies and final boss. He died peacfully at the ripe old age of 99 in his villa in Argentina.
Your great grandfather was a hero
you know considering robert prince was behind this, doom 1 and 2, and some things that 3d realms worked on (don't know how much) but either way with how much he compsed it was truly amazing how many good midi tracks are out there
The programmers were John carmack Adrian carmack and John Romero I believe Robert Prince did the music❤
"the march to war" is the best.

i think i've heard 16:02 somewhere before, but i don't know where
My first game with sound card... Ah, memories ♥
I was really young when I first played this and had no idea at the time that the title theme was the Nazi anthem. I loved the music for this game.
A timeless soundtrack.
18:21 sounds so creepy, imagine being on a long dark hallway with this song.
Reminds me of evil clowns and dolls hiding behind walls and shelves ready to pounce
Reminds me of the backrooms
Sounds like the beginning of a rap song tbh
When I was younger I thought Horst-Wessel-Lied was an original song. I can remember being shocked when
I found out it wasn't composed by Robert Prince. The march to war is basically a medley of various Patriotic
anthems including Yankee Doodle/Yankee Doodle Boy, Dixie's land, Your a grand old flag?, Taps and even
a bit of Horst-Wessel-Lied before ending with God save the king/God bless our native land. Part of Victory
March is also based on a hymn called Guide me O Thou. And Funk You is reminiscent of Black is black by
Los Bravos. Funnily enough with the exception of Funk You The March to war and Victory march are 2 examples of
my least favorite songs in the game, I prefer the more creepy and atmospheric tracks like Suspense, Into
the dungeons and Twelfth hour. And Nazi Anthem is another remix of Horst-Wessel-Lied. I sort of prefer
Spear Of Destiny's music selection.
First time I heard Enemy Around the Corner was a Final Fantasy game on this online site called Byond. You heard it if you attacked guards or other players, being sentenced to a location simply known as the cube. I heard the song again on a countdown for stupid conversational moments which referenced this game. So, this is where DA KYUUUB came from.
Horst Wessel Lied and Nazi Anthem are the songs from Wolfenstein I will always remember.

I think the track that comes before End of Level is really good. It sounds almost like Blake Stone

When this came out in ‘92 my friends dad mail-ordered the original for him ($50!), and they strongly refused to let me COPY DAT FLOPPY, even after I offered to pay them for it.
But the rest of us kids would just give each other copies of everything from games to porn without a second thought - You could fit like 10-20 low-quality jpg’s on each floppy disk.
