I have the 2021 version of this model...and replaced the wiring harness and installed SD Pearly Gates pickups. And I absolutely love it for all the reasons mentioned. Great video as always
You did the smart thing.
I just ordered mine. This video really helped me decide. I’m looking for a workhorse prs. It’s the necks I love. This is my first time with a pattern thin but I’m excited to try it first hand.
Lovely! I have the S2 Vela Hollowbody and it's so light and sounds so good. The S2 line is really cool, even more now. Actually it attracts me a lot more than the Core models. Would be cool if PRS could offer the USA pickups at a reduced price for previous S2 owners.
Yeah but they won't
It's crazy how much these have crept in price over the years. I remember the original launch of the S2 was marketed as a "USA made workhorse guitar for under $1000". I understand everything is expensive nowadays, just kind of a bummer to see.
Heck, most of the Asian SE models are hovering just under $1000 these days.
Yea, old S2s were the price of a Fender American Special and Standard. Now they're the price of American Professionals, Ultras, and Vintages. Before they were the cheapest American guitars you can get.
Jackson USA models are inbetween $4-$5,000. so it could be worse. lOL~
This is your friendly reminder that inflation is open class warfare.
Man this is amazing. I love the stripped down look and all the specs. If only I could get one with a 20" radius...
I agree totally! They really need more options for neck radius. At least a 10-16 compound or even a few 14+ radiused necks.
You can't fool us, this thing looks hideous ergonomically I know you won't use it.
@@bassyey It just looks hideous, period. I still don't understand how anyone thinks these guitars look good, apart from the bird inlays.
The only model I like is the Mark Holcomb, because it leans into the dark gaudiness.
@@arunkarthikma3121subjective
@@arunkarthikma3121 What guitars do you think look beautiful? The Stranberg ones? I think those look hideous. People like different guitars it is ok. You are not the arbiter of taste.
Omg s2 line is back. This is incredible. PRS is doing a fantastic job!
I remember buying an S2 with duncans in it for like 650$ used a few years ago. That was an obvious deal but I would never pay pretty much 3x that for one of these. You can even find used old cores for a little under 2k. Great video Phil
My S2 Standard 22 satin is a real workhorse of a guitar, and not one im as concerned about playing live. It's the real deal without the maple cap.
I really appreciate the lengths you go to in your reviews. Plus your playing has improved (not that it was bad, but it has levelled up alot). I have a PRS core SC 594 Semi-Hollow and a US Silver Sky, and I was thinking of a Paul's guitar next, but after seeing this, and PRS' video, I'm going to buy an S2 Custom 24-08 this year.
Great review!
I currently own 4 PRS guitars and none of them have shielding paint in the cavity. On my S2 Vela I went ahead and shielded the cavity because it had a single-coil neck pickup, but I did not notice any difference at all. They simply don't need it.
I did the same thing with my guitars. Sheilded and there was no difference
Shielding the cavity is really only necessary if the wiring is not adequately shielded. Most guitars should be fine.
Hey. Will you address Hardluck kings demise in a future program?
Houmbuckers (any humbucker) don't need shielding paint.
But, but… money!you need to buy more products you need to spend more money!
great guitar i like it . amazing review much appreciated
PRS S2 upgraded and in cocaine white! Its a winner.
Very happy with my SE CE 24 Satin Standard....Thank you PRS for finally making a truly affordable model for the many. For those who could never afford a PRS before. A guitar not at all to be under estimated. I would put this $500 guitar next to guitars double in price in terms of quality. Pick ups, like everything about a guitar is quite subjective. I really like the PRS 85/15 PUs. I really do not care where a guitar is made, or the type of wood used, or even the electronics as much as I care how it feels, how it sounds and how it plays.
I played the SE flame top CE. Very nice guitar for the $. While it felt a bit different than my Core CE, it really did do a good job capturing the basic vibe of the core line. Played real nice too. Congrats on your new guitar. 😁
@@shawnmcginnis2508 Thanks !
Me, my SE Custom 24 and , my SE Hollowbody II Piezo agree with you.
12:37 That right there! That's the tone I'm looking for.
PRS needs to offer more options on the neck fretboard radius. Love the quality, fit, finish and sound of their guitars but 10” necks are too round for me. Make this same guitar with a hardtail bridge and 12 to 14 radius neck and I’m buying. Yes I agree that the pickups should have been USA all along.
I have an S2 custom I put a \m/ in the bridge and a 57/08 in the neck I love it. Then I have a core 594 has the 58/15 LT pickups best pickups PRS offers. I am very excited the S2s have the USA pickups.
Yes the satin S2 Standards are such a great deal and even better with the Core pups. I'd still probably go for the "Core" CEs though if I was looking at US made 'budget' models. But SE pickups have improved a lot last few years compared to older versions, I'm really satisfied with my SE Swamp Ash 85/15S / AS-01 tones. And I'd given up on SEs for awhile till I played one.
I love my Core CE24. Even had it modded to have the 24-08 switching. Anyway, the price of a CE24 in 2024 has gotten ridiculous. My 2021 wasn't cheap, but 2024 idk of I could justify it anymore if I had to purchase again.
I think this is a right step for the S2 line will definitely be checking the 2024 models
The tenth anniversary s2 models use usa pickups and pots I believe ,sounds fantastic as well .
I have a charcoal satin S2 Standard 24 and i love it
Interested to see if used S2 prices dip. I don’t mind the import electronics.
Right? Part of me wonders if maybe I’m just some uncouth hearing impaired nitwit. Another part of me just thinks that other people are just cork sniffing and pretentious.
@@Newnodrogbob having an SE and CE I would personally say the American 85/15 sound fuller and more balanced, but maybe a bit more compressed. Asked which one I like better sound wise, well 90% of the time I'd choose the CE but there are times the SE fits to moment better.
This guitar used to be 1K! Not sure if the pickup upgrade is worth it, especially since I'd prefer something probably more than twice as hot :)
Great review. Nice guitar. Didn't find that guitar linked. Definitely like the tremolo on it more than without. Link it please.
Wonder if it comes with a case? At that price it should do it and not give a gig bag like the PRS Silver Sky.
They S2 line has always had a gig bag. A well made one at that.
I bet that satin nitro is going to look amazing when it gets some wear on it. Very nice
I have an S2, a 2016 model I think. I also have a CE24 and a core Custom 22 and honestly, the S2 sounds as good as either of them. Glad I got it while they were still relatively cheap.
I love my s2 satin, The only thing I didn't like about it is the dot inlays, glad they "fixed" that.
I loved the banjo sound effect.
Me too. I do a warm up exercise that I got from Steve Vai’s column in a guitar magazine about 30 years ago where you run every note up and down the neck and back - increasing speed as possible while still picking clearly.
I figure he’s using that - it looks like it.
Sure do wish they had these available before I had spent my cash on a Fender USA Strat
I wonder how the 5815 pick ups would sound......on my 2008 PRS Mira that I purchased at McKnight guitars from Phil? Mine has the solid bird, neck inlays.....great for slide tuning...
I got my s2 standard new in 2019 for $850. love the guitar. the new pricepoint for it is a bit steep tho.
Inflation is a pain
It looks like the S2 Standard 22 still has the Pattern Regular neck profile. Great decision! Good stuff PRS
Greetings Phillip from Indy. I need an expert’s opinion. I have a Latitude Cardinal Headless w/ a Swamp Ash body in semi gloss natural. I really want to add a coil split for the two humbuckers and the big question, I want to have a black binding installed where there isn’t one already. In your opinion, is that doable or wise at all. Thanks for all the work and effort for educating us. 😮 Peace!
Well done PRS!
I have a '22 S2 satin standard 22. The pickups are great. The only thing I don't like about the guitar is the floating bridge. I need to find the best way to make it dive only. Apparently they shouldn't be decked. I also prefer the push-pull for splitting pickups.
That's a really nice looking guitar. Those USA pups are gonna get a lot of proverbial triggers pulled, me thinks.
Got to love PRS... sounds meaty with the overdrive
Hi Phil I am going to to buy this guitar right now I had the old version without the American pick ups the one I’m getting is red . I noticed you comment on the set up of their tremolo .Do you have a specific video showing the set up for this tremolo system? This is a great model I love the way the 5 way switch works the guitar is ultra comfortable easy to play it is light for me it is a win win win . I also mention I bought the Laney cub combo tube amp you reviewed as well it goes great with this guitar. 🎸
I’m more of a Fender guy but alll the PRS I have were flawless in every way from the box. I never liked the pickups so they were swapped out but everything else is incredible.
I wish they would still make the S2 Mira. Would be nice with a satin finish!
I wish they would also bring back the Starla.
At Christmas i got an SE SAS. The fourth SE ive owned. 1st made in Indonesia and the first one i liked the pickups. In fact other than putting locking tuners on it theres nothing i wouls change on it.
Agree, the Indonesian made SE SAS 85/15S/AS-01 pickups are good enough to keep stock, I put locking tuners on mine as well. My Korean SE is an amazing quality build but the pups needed replacing. Had an old 1990s PRS EG-2 HSH that was stolen and waited long time for an affordable PRS with HSH. And Iri Blue is gorgeous too.
Yeah they seem to have been slowly upgrading the overseas pickups. I am sure some of the change is related to that to differentiate the lines.
As always, great job.
As always my ask to Paul:
When do we get a regular guitar with proper-sized (jumbo or narrow-tall) frets?
Did they also add the birds to that guitar? I seem to remember those having dots, which I kinda liked. I dig it, though. That's always been my favorite PRS.
Yep. this version has birds. I like. wish my Vela had birds
Hey Phillip thanks for all your videos!! I'd like to ask you; how can I change the wraparound bridge on my gretsch g2210 for a tremolo and a roller bridge? I mean, since is wraparound it only comes with those 2 holes... easy to replace that wraparound with the roller bridge but i'd still need to drill at least a couple holes if i want to add say the duesenberg. Any tips on the way a should measure the distance between the roller bridge and the two new holes for the duesenberg? Thanks in advance brother.
What about the Brian Moore guitars. Or, the Gary Levinson guitars, such as the R4 Blades. Etc
Looks like these have long-legged pickups. Looks like my Antiquities would be perfect!
Pattern regular neck shape is the best neck shape for me :).. and the Luke III neck.
I know! Really disappointed because the rest of the changes are great
Hey Phil! Awesome review and I'm so happy to see the changes coming into the s2! One minor thing I wanted to clarify: isn't the Lovepedal OD11 a Timmy clone? I always thought it was based on the Timmy and not the ZenDrive becuase Lovepdal make a full-blown ZenDrive as it is.
best guitar reviews ever!
I'm curious what are they gonna do with the CE24 model...hardware upgrade? I love the bridge on my CE24, and the tuners, but now the CE24 is much more expensive than the S2, with no many differences, except the contour on the body and the fact that are bolt on.
I agree. The CE24 has gotten ridiculous on price. I love mine(2021), but dang, the 2024 prices are hard to justify.
Now compared to the S2 reviewed here the CE has a flame maple top, gloss body finish with satin neck (love the satin neck, the deeper but not core deep carve, and ofcourse American pickups as well. So there is a price difference in work and materials... but idk if it's really the almost $1000 difference there is as of right now.
I dig the non fancy tops, much more my style!!
for players not posers ! 😅
I like PRS but I don’t love the way many of them look. This one, looks cool. I could see The Ramones using this thing. That’s cool.
Bought an se custom 24 really liked it but didn't like the tremolo because I don't ever have a use for it and tune around too much. Bought and s2 594 and actually preferred the se custom 24. Great quality guitars no doubt they just do not feel special or inspire me when playing so I sold both.
Nice guitar! I’d prefer this model over a fancy finish model PRS .
This is such a no-brainer move for PRS. I've been interested in the Vela Semihollow for a while but couldn't mentally get past the import pickups. Gibson and Fender put American pickups in their American guitars after all. The playing demo for the Satin Vela Semihollow they posted was fantastic and I want to try one out as soon as I can.
I tried the previous version Vela Semi-hollow Satin, and they feel and sound great. I imagine the new version will sound amazing!
The pickups weren't great but the S2 line was about having great bones. I paid about $1200 for my Vela and added a Filtertron and Firebird pickup. If I bought a Vela today, I would still make those changes. The S2 line offered guitars that felt like it was way above its price range. My Vela compares favorably to guitars that cost 2-3x as much. The Standards were a very stripped down PRS. It made sense when they were at the old price range. You could buy the guitar and make it your own for not that much money.
In your opinion, is it possible to retrofit a evertune bridge in place of the trem? Is there Much routing involved? I hate trems, and would like an Evertune.
It requires a lot of routing still, even with a trem.
From the thumbnail I thought it had white EMG 57/66s in it and I thought "Hey cool!....Ooh..." 😅 Really dig the satin finish on it with the wood grain showing through though!
Aloha Phill! Upgraded S2? Nice
Sounds really good. Sometimes I don't know if it's the guitar or your playing. Thanks again.
How does the next compare to a 60's Les Paul or a V2 neck of a LP?
Not a follower of PRS guitars so didn't realise the S2 line didn't have US pickups. That seems so weird now as it seems obvious that they should have had that from the start.
Why would you assume that?
@@jasonmizuno6117 Are you seriously questioning why someone would assume that a US made guitar would have US pickups? lol Ok, I'll play... why wouldn't it? Doesn't PRS make their own pickups?
@@Darth.Shredder those are the core pickups. Assuming they would have already came with a base model is kinda weird. They had their own S2 Pickups previously, one reason why they were half the price of their core brothers. The fact they are offering them now in the lesser model is completely insane and a big upgrade.
@@jasonmizuno6117 By that logic, you're suggesting that Gibson shouldn't have put their own USA made pickups in their $1299 Tribute models or the current $1599 Les Paul Studios. Sorry, but it's not "insane" for a US made guitar to have US made pickups and not much of an "upgrade' when they raised prices on all their S2's by hundreds of dollars.
@jasonmizuno6117 Considering Fender uses their own pickups on USA models and Gibson uses their own pickups on USA models it should be obvious to you why someone might assume that.
Well this is a positive change because I really like those guitars, only problem is Epiphone just up their game and added some new Epiphone less Paul's to the lineup with the open book headstock so now what do I do I can't buy 2 new guitars
I have a semi-hollow Vela that looks just like that. It is awesome.
I am more excited that we get the birds. But damn the good pickups. Now I have to get this.
Pattern thin - the best neck
i prefer pattern regular
33 dead frets! LOL 😆Too funny... I dig the guitar!
You get the bird inlays on the standard now. Interesting.
When will they make a plain fretboard? Ebony, please.
Phil, why does Fender still put nickel frets and "standard" tuners on an "American PROFESSIONAL II" at $1800 when I can get stainless steel, locking nuts and great quality of a Shecter at $1400? I really want the sound of a strat, but who wants to mess with possibly needing maintenance in a few years after shelling out that kind of money? Any advice?
Will you please ask PRS to make them for lefties??
At least Fender American Professional II comes with a hard case with TSA locks. It's a decent case too, I've tried flying it from Japan. Works fine. At the same price, this doesn't even come with one.
Yes…all it comes with is…*checks notes* a much better guitar.
I'd really love to know your thoughts on the S2 Custom 24 10th anniversary with the US electronics.
I LOVE the S2 line. So much value for the money, especially new. I really wish they would bring back the Mira S2…!
I have an older Mira...pre S2. It is awesome. Beautifully made. Swapped out the pickups...found them a bit thin sounding. My go to guitar. I have a S2 Vela semi hollow satin on order.
It’s a great move for PRS, but as someone with 2 pre-2024 S2’s, I’m a bit bummed.😢
The new velas have narrowfields in the neck
Yeah I am guessing that was a licensed type pickup and they don't really make that one in the factory.
While I much prefer the traditional type of PRS burst, quilts and flames, this guitar really looks great in an almost art deco as-applied in a Fenderish kind of way. Sounds great too. Thanks for the deep dive on this one.
I own the 2018 model and I changed everything on it in terms of electronics including the wires! Check it out on my channel with before and after! The short story is: The pickups (now they don't need changing anymore, nice!), the capacitor as it comes with .33nF which is darker ( I changed to .22nF for brightness), and the saddles (changed to titanium or steel) are the biggest improvements you can make in terms of affecting tone and feel. I would say that the saddles are number one actually....it makes it sound plinky and eats sustain. So many ppl over YT are changing the entire bridge to MANN made steel and brass equivalent, but I couldn't afford that.
Are the pots USA PRS Core pots too?
Yes they are
There is nothing specific about PRS's that make me desire one except for the aesthetics. When playing one, I'm always just 'Fine' with the shape, neck carve etc, but never a GAS-like need for one like I do Jackson/Charvels, Ibanez's, or Parkers.
That's why there are hundreds of flavors of soda. Everyone has different tastes.
Nice guitar and demo! Sadly this one does make it on my list. I don't like the bird inlays and prefer dots. After owning the S2 Vela semi hollow it's a far more versatile guitar for the money imho...
I have the PRS S2 dot in antique white from 2021would love a set of these pickups and I also like the bridge
man, that was some nice playing
Wow that sounds really good
The S2 line is actually my favorite of all PRS guitars. But, I can't buy one because of the narrow nut width. I just can't.
Narrow nut? Wider than a LP and a Strat. My 89 Charvel is a bit wider, but otherwise the PRS wide/thin neck or Pattern thin neck is not a narrow nut width guitar.
this is my next guitar
please let me know if the whammy bar vibrates ? drives me nuts on mine !!
There is an adjustment screw to fix that. Used the Allen wrench that came with guitar.
@@PhillipMcKnight really !! wow !! lol thanks Phil !! Will check now !! you may have just made my day !!! cheers!!!
@@PhillipMcKnightYUP ! it's there !! lol you made my day !!! KNOW YOUR GEAR !! It looked more like a hole to me cause the allen screw is a little deep.... so yeah thanks man !!! appreciate that !!!
What’s the difference between that and the Vela guitars? Looks just like my Vela
Vela is an offset body, has 22 instead of 24 frets, has a fixed almost Tele bridge vs a floating trem, a 3 way toggle vs a 5 way blade, and 1 single coil and one humbucker (split capable with push pull tone) vs 2 humbuckers (both splitable though through the 5 way switch in certain combos of single /hum).
The S2 guitar bridge 58-15 with a narrow field in the neck (Pauls pickups stacked) I believe would sound very nice. Now what would that S2 go for ...
That’s basically what the Vela is
I like the sound of those pickups . The neck could be wider for me and the way it is finished is a bit too cheap for my liking . Overall though , I see a PRS S2 in my collection someday! It’s those birds on the dark fretboard I love. And 6.8 pounds is a perfect weight. Fix the finish and I think it’s a hit!
I'm guilty. When the 58/15 LT pups were made available, they said they were a 1 time deal only. I always liked them a lot, and I bought a set. I got 10% off, and paid the $450. They are still on my pup shelf not installed in anything yet. I also have a set I bought from Joe Bonamasa, spares for '59 "Burst"s, not installed in anything yet either. (They are Bonamasa/Duncan, not real 59's by any means. They are the 'spares' Joe takes on the road). I have a bunch of other pups also, not as many as Phil I don't think, but my fair share. LOL. I'm only going to loose money on them, but they make me happy. 8) Peace 8) --gary
I bought my first PRS, the 594 McCarty SE and I LOVE it!! The neck profile is identical to my 2016 Gibson Flying V. Two things about PRS...the birds, and they all look the same but you never know if it costs $800 or $6500?
I admire a man who hasb love and respect for his mother, but to put bird inlays on 99% of your guitars? Thats just bad for business. Inlays are an important design element and you can change the look but varying the inlays. My inexpensive Schecter has the coolest inlays, the design is great and they've got different color inlays, and they do one on the first fret. Give us some variety Mr. Smith:)
Great vid Phil! I become a bigger PRS fan every year.
And how much of a price increase will there be? Probably the cost of the pickup set.
Good move by PRS. I wish my PRS S2 Satin 24 had come with good pickups. It shipped with G & B pickups, same as my PRS SE Custom 24. I'm not a fan of the G & B pickups. At all. I'll tell you what it is - the individual note definition when you play a chord with typical crunch settings is a bit muddy. They sound good for the single note stuff. I put in a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates and it's a big improvement. The price increase was probably necessary, but it would have been nice if the pickup upgrade was optional. That said, $250 for a set of good pickups is reasonable.
I have a Vela satin semi-hollow that I love. But no matter what, I can't dig the overseas electronics. Put SD Phat Cats and CTS pots in it and made it the guitar it should have been from the get go, just as they have done here. Highly recommend you check these out!
So the phat cats sound better than the vela pickups? I've always wanted to try those phat cats
@@FRANKBOOTH777 I definitely think so and I love em. I originally had a set in a Epiphone SG that I ended up selling and regretting. So when I realized my Vela had humbucker routes in the body, it was a no-brainer to change...
@@seanrosedotcom I'm a Fender guy mostly, and have been thinking about putting a set in a strat I have.
@@FRANKBOOTH777 I am sure that would sound great. Neck and bridge. Tasty!
So I looked on Reverb and I see new 2024 S2 Standard 24 satin guitars with dot inlay and 3-way switch. But they have the 58/15LT pickups. What's up?
Those are the 58/15 S pickups. That is still a prior to the changes model that would have still been a 2024
The give away is the actual 58/15 pickups are engraved on the covers.
You talked about a "dead fret", I have come across on two guitars of a dead high E string. Simply lower volume (not just lower treble but its the string). reason?
If you think it's so great, why don't you buy one, Phillip? You're a fine guitarist; you can make it sing. 👍👍👍
HAHAHAHA the banjo audio made me LOL 4 real ! Just bought one of these in black
What is this guitar? I haven’t seen this model? With two humbuckers? I though Starla had different pickups.
