    You know everyone keeps getting hung up on the 6.5 x 300 Wby being a barrel burner. Well depends on if you want a paper puncher or one of the finest hunting rifles ever offered in a factory rifle. So what if it shoots the barrel out in 1000 rounds. The average person that buys a rifle to hunt with will shoot a couple of boxes of ammo the first year you buy it because you are sighting it in and trying it out on distance. Then after that maybe a box or less per year after that. So 20 rounds divided into 1000 is 50 years of shooting the finest rifle ever made. And so what if you shoot it out, you can always buy another barrel or rebore that one to a different caliber. The average person wont shoot a thousand rounds in a lifetime. So only if you are going to get out there and speed shoot and heat the barrel up past average hunting conditions do you have anything to worry about. And if you do. You still had the bragging rights of the best of the best.

    I own a 6.5 creedmoor, 6.5 PRC and 6.5-300 Weatherby… all three are easily 3/4 MOA rifles. I also have a 257 Weatherby and it is a screaming fast round. I just got back from a Wyoming cow elk hunt and took a cow at a lasered 400 yards with the 257 wby. One shot and she went maybe 40 yds and was down. Used 100 gr Barnes TTSX.

    Hey man I've been all over your channel and I don't know how I missed this one. In answering your question I would choose the weatherby and just have three barrels made at the same time. Disdain is a strong word but I could almost use it for how I feel about Hornady and I am far from ever getting a PRC anything, by my choice. This weatherby screamer is still carrying enough energy to safely kill an elk at 600 yards! I think it's an outstanding choice for all the positives that you mentioned. Thanks for covering it!

    I recently watched a video Ron Spomer posted about the 6.5 PRC vs the 270 Winchester. At typical hunting distances, they're ballistics are on top of each other. Unless you plan on shooting past 500+ yards, there's no reason to get a PRC if it's going to be used for hunting. It shines at distance, hence the name, Precision Rifle Cartridge.

    • @ReloadingWeatherby

      My Bergara 24 inch is shooting 130 grain factory at 3,100 fps. Even IF the .270 is shooting a factory 130 at 3,100 and from I have seen they are not unless you get some really high power stuff, the 6.5 prc is still a more potent round because it's the same weight in a smaller caliber. If a 270 could fire a 140 grain bullet at 3,000 fps and the 280 fires a 140 at 3,000 fps, which one is more powerful? You guys can't get over the fact that because it's called "PRC" and not "Magnum" that it isn't a magnum and the 6.5 prc is a magnum. It's just the name.

    • @bustabass9025
      @bustabass9025 2 года назад +1

      That barrel burner business is pretty much a non-starter argument as far as I'm concerned. It's almost as weak as the rationale used by some new cartridge antagonists on RUclips, to argue against the 28 Nosler, 6.8 Western, 300 & 6.5 PRC, and other recent high velocity offerings, "...if you go on a hunting trip and you forget your ammo, you won't find these cartridges in the local gas station, like you will .270, .30-06, or .308." How weak is that?! If by chance you forget your ammo, there's also a very good likelihood you've forgotten your rifle and/or your license. In which case, I'd question the wisdom of your handling any guns in the first place!
      In any event, the average Joe DeerTag won't shoot over a thousand rounds in the life of one rifle. Particularly, if he owns more than one. Competition shooters, on the other hand probably put more than a thousand rounds through one rifle pretty quick and often. But that's a whole other discussion on purpose, rifle choice, usage, etc. To those attempting to further said arguments, I say do the math. Don't just make asinine comments simply because you can!

      Everyone always belies the 300 RUM for being a barrel burner, however mine is on about 1200 rounds in with no degradation in accuracy - mostly because I don't overheat the barrel!

  • @stevefertig6594
    @stevefertig6594 Месяц назад

    I'd go with the 6.5-300 and wouldn't worry about being a barrel burner unless you are sending lots of rounds down range...that not usually the case for a typical hunting rifle.
    I have a 300 Weatherby mag i purchased in 1978 and a 257 Weatherby mag since 1993 and barrels on both a in great shape.
    These gun usually aren't used for lots of target shooting so it's not going to be a issue. Use a much less expensive caliber if you want to punch paper.
    Both of my Weatherby's shoot a 1/2'' group at 100 yards and with those two calibers your covered from varmints to moose and even brown bear.
    I believe the 6.5- 300 Weatherby would be a very interesting and capable caliber up to elk size game at longer ranges than any other 6 or 6.5 caliber around.
    Thanks for the comparison on these calibers.

I did call weatherby for even brass,I do have dies for these calibers and cannot locate even brass for these.Weatherby informed me that the lack of ammo for these calibers in not a production issue, its a raw material problem,that is very troubling.I bought the 240 just because I am a Weatherby fan.I really don't know what to think of this caliber.When you have time please share your thoughts then maybe I will consider this caliber more seriously. What do you consider a barrel burner & is it based upon the amount of powder or the bullet's MV? Now if shoot the 156 gr, is that considered overbore?

    • @ReloadingWeatherby
      @ReloadingWeatherby  2 года назад

      I think there are a few factors to consider.
      1. The ratio to diameter of bullet to size of the case (powder capacity)
      2. How much powder are you burning to get a couple hundred feet per second more? 6.5 PRC gets 3150 FPS with 60 gr of powder. 6.5-300 WBY does 3400 FPS with 85 gr of powder. So you're burning 25 grains of more powder to get 250 FPS.

      Just as important is the fact that the slight difference in velocity can be stepped up when handloading the Weatherby. Hornady was not going for the all-out flattest shooting, deepest penetrating cartridge when they designed the 6.5 PRC. They wanted to improve on the 6.5 Creedmoor's penetrating ability and down range energy, yet still be able to keep velocities down at PRS competition levels, or under 3000 fps. That said there is much debate about the lethality of all 6.5 diameter bullets on Elk sized game, yes shot placement is key but using a larger diameter brings in other variables that doubles or triples the lethality of a cartridge. I mean why choose 6.5 300- WBM over 6.5 PRC when they both have enough penetrating power and energy to kill Elk at long range as long as shot placement is good. The only way one can improve their chances of anchoring a Bull Elk is to increase the bullet diameter such as 7mm Rum or 300 win mag. Well there is bullet construction and all that, but you see where I'm going?

      Yes I agree with you. I prefer a 30 caliber magnum for elk hunting

    I've said before I would not use the 6.5 anything for hunting...but it would make a great long-range sniper cartridge for sure.

      A lot of bear and moose have fallen to a 65 swede. The 6.5mm is fine just not when put in a 6.5 creedmor case.

      Yet, people have been using the 6.5 Swede for over 120 years on moose!

      @@joshlower1 I never shoot at animals that far just saying it has the energy to do it I prefer to kill them at 20 yards with my long bow but they don’t always cooperate
