I bought a new 2012 Chevy Sonic 1.4T w/ a 6 speed manual. I loved driving it, but at 65,000 miles, it was an oil burner, and I needed a truck for my business, so I traded it in. What I notice now 11 years later is how few Sonic and Cruze turbos are still on the road. Virtually every one you see now is the naturally aspirated version.
Another great video and heads up on cars to avoid . Sadly a lot of folks lease these cars for 3 yrs and just drive them until the rubber wears out . That leaves the next customer with a time bomb . I know someone that has a 2020 Subaru WRX and the engine blew a head gasket at 52,000 miles.. My sister has a friend that had a 2020 Ford Escape with EcoBoost engine and it blew up .. In the meantime it started leaking /burning oil real bad before 50,000 miles. It was fixed under warranty.. a little while down the road the transmission went out.. As with all engines, sometimes you can just get lucky. I've driven a 1.4L turbo eco in a 2017 Chevy Cruze from new and never had a problem with it. And I've not been kind to it either, it's been driven hard. Currently has over 185,000 kms on it and doesn't show any signs of giving up the ghost just yet. Again, sometimes you just get lucky.
Only one correction. Yes, the 3 valve 5.4 triton was not good, but that was 2004 to 2010 on the F150. The 1997 to 2003 2 valve were actually a really solid engine (other than spark plugs popping out on some of them early on). Ford screwed up royally when they re-designed it.
With the manufacturer's marketing gimmick of 10K to 15k oil change intervals, expect these engines to crap out at 60,000. The "recommended" intervals of the long extended oil changes will get you through the average 3-4 year factory warranty, and the engineers know this. I have 2021 USA model Passat, 2.0 triple 8 engine, 48,000 miles so far and 🤞. I got extended service contract to 85,000. Great, comfortable commuter car for work and great mpg.
I bought the 2024 SLE350 W4 AMG Mercedes-Benz SUV. I usually get the basic warranty and maybe extend it...once!!! On this car I extended the Mercedes care package to 84 months!!! ($4000.???), from day one. I even have full roadside assistance. Anything with a plastic engine cover gets my attention especially if it is turbocharged!!!🤤 It has all offraod packages, including the lift package, and towing package with a 7,700lb payload!!! With all that comfort inside, I need a mechanic to stand outside with a lube gun, and an engine code reader!!! It is a who** house on wheels, and it gets 36mpg!!! (Hwy) 28mpg city. I would hate to have to tow it to a salvage yard!!!
The 5.4 you have to change the oil on time change the coolant at 30,000 and change your spark plug at 60,000 miles. The spark plugs are very skinny so it's important to change those within three to four years so that they're not difficult to get out.
Great video. I made a list of these 10 engines to avoid. I have been buying older vehicles for 40 years for our family vehicle. So, knowing which ones to avoid is helpful. For now I am driving a Toyota Innova. Most likely I will stick with Toyota products.
I have 2015 Chevy Cruze. It has 170,000 miles. No engine issues, In between 100000 to 120,000 miles I had a new starter, alternator, fuse box, ecm and a bcm put on the car. I had 3 purge valve and 2 gas caps put on the car. I had 3 coolants leak’s working on my my 4th now. Needs new radiator, ac compressor and and hvac replacement.
I had a 2005 F150 and no issues when we pick it up at 120,000 miles till 220,000 when it got into a 3 car accident. then we took the insurance check of 8,000 to buy a 09 F150 king Ranch at 160,000. Today we are sitting at 242,000 miles and no issues to the trimming or spark plugs . the biggest problem we had is the AC system. having to remove the dash board $$$$$$$ when we purchased the 09, a yr later the dash board had to be removed. fast forward to 3 yrs later, they are wanting to remove the dash board again to replace the E vapor so the AC system will work 100% we did not move forward on the dashboard . waiting to save more money. if it makes it to next summer, we will have it replace. till then, work with what we have other then that. FORD has been a good working truck in our family. we normal get about 100,000 to 200,000 miles out of them till its too old or gets in a accident . which every comes first
Ford is definitely known for engine fires I had one that caught fire years ago good stuff Mark your videos are always fun to watch keep up the good work friend
My 2017 Chevy Impala with the 3600 V6 just turned 70000 miles and NO Issues ever. Change oil every 5000 since new. Replaced tires and battery and had fuel system cleaned. Replaced air filter a few times and that's all.
16:17 Eh I can’t totally agree with this. I had a 2006 Mercedes E350 4matic that I sold when it had 130k miles on it. I believe the balance shaft issue was improved after 2006 or so, but luckily I didn’t have that and I kept my car maintained.
You are right about they don't make them like they used to. I bought a brand new 2022 Mercedes a 220 with 0.3 miles on the clock. I drove it off the lot to take it home. And the engine self-destructed and caught fire and exploded before I even made it out of the dealership at 0.7 miles. I asked the dealer what happened, he said. Well, they just don't make him like they used to,and said. Let's come back and get you a new Mercedes. So I thought I would give it one more chance. And the next one did the same thing this time. At point 4 miles and still didn't make it out of the dealership. And he tried to sell me a third Mercedes after that the same day.
14:38 I don’t know about that one my friend. I have the 3.5 in my 2010 W204 with 167,000km and it is running strong. I still see W204’s on the road, can’t say the same with regards to the E46 from that era. You couldn’t get 312hp in that V6. I have the C350 and the HP is around 265. After the C350 was the C63 and that had over 400hp from a V8.
One vehicle you mentioned the Chevy Trax we got those in Australia known as the Holden Trax the were made by Daewoo from South Korea and of course the Cruz and the Capiiva known as the Craptiva and fornuantley Daewoo don't build cars anymore so no more Cruzes Trax ect yay
Yeah, Sometimes I Think These Automotive Companies Engineer Their Cars With Aftermarketing In Mind. They Make More Selling Aftermarket Parts Then New. Definitely Know The Turbochargers Companies Do. 😉👌🤑💵
Ok, gotta correct u on the 5.4 ford, the 3 valve engine wasn’t put into production until 2004. Bf that it was the 2 valve & 4 valve 5.4’s…… the 3 valve is junk, my wife’s navigator timing failed at 130k…… however the 2 valve & 4 valve variants of that engine are bullet proof…… my f250 2valve work truck is pushing 300k & still runs like new….. u are correct on the 3 valve, but wrong on the manufacture yrs….. 3valve started production in ‘04
Tiguan you are showing comes with a 3rd generation EA888 engine paired with an 8 speed automatic from Toyota/Lexus AISIN AWF8F35, same gearbox that you get in Lexus RX and Toyota RAV4. The EA888 3rd generation engine is very reliable and can last long. The problem was with previous EA888 generation engines. Gearbox, it’s from Toyota, need I say more?
@@ECPP That gearbox has been around for 10 years on many cars and first time used was on Lexus RX. There has been nothing wrong with this gearbox in a decade. With that said, there are no reports or issues with that gearbox on Tiguan as well. Moreover, as I said the 2nd gen Tiguan has an 3rd generation EA888 engine that is a very reliable engine and will last quite a while without issues if maintained properly. I've seen plenty of those engines running at 400k+ km. Now, the most common issues on those Tiguans are water pump failure, oil burning issues, and more specifically for 2022 and 2023 year models steering wheel module failure, which also has a recall.
@@mann_idonotreadreplies wow you can't read. The gearbox I mentioned is the same one from Lexus RX, RAV4, Camry and many other Toyota models. That makes the entire Toyota crap then.
Hi I love your videos and always find them highly entertaining. I would have to disagree with the 5.4 triton only lasting 60000 miles. I have a 2006 F150 in New Zealand I inherited from my father when he passed away. The truck has done 208000 miles so far with no engine problems. It has always had the oil changed every 6000 miles with 5w30 synthetic. Hopefully it continues to run for another 200000 without issue. I also have a 2008 c250 Mercedes with a 2.5 m272 v6 it has done 57000 miles with no issues the engine is always serviced every 6000 miles also or yearly whatever comes first. Hopefully this continues to be a good car too. Keep up the great videos.
Add to all these horrible cars is that now dealers are charging a premium to buy their garbage. USA car makers are in big trouble. Why would someone buy these cars and pay over $50-$60k or more for the privilege. ?
Is there a small suv that is affordable with a good engine? Looking to buy small suv for my daughter, and all I hear is small SUV’s have bad engines. Besides Toyotas, which you can’t find and are not affordable anymore.
BMW N54 enginecan definitely last…. Have to be deligent and do those “maintenance” items. Heck, should add BMW e9x M3 to the list, the engine doesn’t last til 60k miles due to rod bearings based on your definition

I am 60 years old and do not need all the bells and whistles just a very dependable, long lasting SUV. Either new or newer. Toyoda, Honda ???
I agree! They're also unsafe to drive here in dull, dark, perpetually overcast Ohio, because gray cars blend right into the roads, the sky on the distant horizon, and the overcast background in certain midwest and northeast states, making them virtually impossible to see until it's too late and someone plows into you, even with the daytime running lights on and working properly. I know, because I once had a dark gray car, and I was hit three times in as many years by other drivers, and they always told the police the same thing: "I just did not see him at all, the car came out of nowhere." Never again will I own a gray car of any shade.
Good to me I stayed away Chinese car products like Chery and Geely. Their after sales will be their problem if I own. Former Geely Coolray and Chery Tiggo 5 buyer here.

Great point and I have a neighbor who was a senior tech at Ford and mentioned these were horrible engines and somewhat challenging to work on
Great video. I made a list of these 10 engines to avoid. I have been buying older vehicles for 40 years for our family vehicle. So, knowing which ones to avoid is helpful. For now I am driving a Toyota Innova. Most likely I will stick with Toyota products.
Cool story bro
i'm the unfortunate owner of an 07 335i. i have 115k miles on it but it's a massive money pit. definitely regret buying.
I've heard about these cars on other videos, like Scotty Kilmer and Wizard at his shop in Newton, KS
You bet, similar minds think alike
Here's a good idea for a video. 10 most reliable engines
Cheers
100 percent
Can we bought a Ford Escape as E with 36000 Miles on it we stick to maintenance schedule haven't had one problem with it it has 85000 Miles on it
Sounds like a good run
Love the term; "Fake Plastic." 😅😂🤭🤣
Haha
What do u recommend Toyota correla ravo four seems like most cars are crap trucks I looking small ones
Camry over Corolla but a 4Runner and Tacoma are great
I had a 2005 F150 and no issues when we pick it up at 120,000 miles till 220,000 when it got into a 3 car accident. then we took the insurance check of 8,000 to buy a 09 F150 king Ranch at 160,000. Today we are sitting at 242,000 miles and no issues to the trimming or spark plugs . the biggest problem we had is the AC system. having to remove the dash board $$$$$$$
when we purchased the 09, a yr later the dash board had to be removed. fast forward to 3 yrs later, they are wanting to remove the dash board again to replace the E vapor so the AC system will work 100%
we did not move forward on the dashboard . waiting to save more money. if it makes it to next summer, we will have it replace. till then, work with what we have
other then that. FORD has been a good working truck in our family. we normal get about 100,000 to 200,000 miles out of them till its too old or gets in a accident . which every comes first
If they work for a person then that’s what matters
Ford is definitely known for engine fires I had one that caught fire years ago good stuff Mark your videos are always fun to watch keep up the good work friend
I got the 3.6 in my Cadillac and currently at 125k miles
Another lucky owner
@@mann_idonotreadreplies lol I just change my oil every 3,000 to 4,000 miles and I also don't step on it like a hellcat
My 2017 Chevy Impala with the 3600 V6 just turned 70000 miles and NO Issues ever.
Change oil every 5000 since new.
Replaced tires and battery and had fuel system cleaned.
Replaced air filter a few times and that's all.
I Broke my engine on a WRX at 15000 miles. Not buying another Subaru after that.
They are poorly executed IMHO
Excellent information, but your commentary is fire! 😂 🔥
16:17 Eh I can’t totally agree with this. I had a 2006 Mercedes E350 4matic that I sold when it had 130k miles on it. I believe the balance shaft issue was improved after 2006 or so, but luckily I didn’t have that and I kept my car maintained.
Thanks
Mercedes have been a garbage for a Long time lol
That’s brutal. They are a little fragile from my experience and i have created a long term experience video of the c300 I own. Stay tuned
What is fake plastic made out of if it's fake?
Fake plastic
14:38 I don’t know about that one my friend. I have the 3.5 in my 2010 W204 with 167,000km and it is running strong. I still see W204’s on the road, can’t say the same with regards to the E46 from that era. You couldn’t get 312hp in that V6. I have the C350 and the HP is around 265. After the C350 was the C63 and that had over 400hp from a V8.
Nice
All of the cars you have highlighted here are of no surprise to me or more than likely to know one else.
I bet Lakewood Chevy loves your reviews of their cars
Thanks for watching
A bmw 116i 2009/2010 I think Is a N52 how’s the car and can you leave with it
One vehicle you mentioned the Chevy Trax we got those in Australia known as the Holden Trax the were made by Daewoo from South Korea and of course the Cruz and the Capiiva known as the Craptiva and fornuantley Daewoo don't build cars anymore so no more Cruzes Trax ect yay
You make me love my 1997 Honda Del Sol Si with 219,000 miles. It look good and runs good. I am a original owner.
Fun little cars
Yeah, Sometimes I Think These Automotive Companies Engineer Their Cars With Aftermarketing In Mind. They Make More Selling Aftermarket Parts Then New. Definitely Know The Turbochargers Companies Do. 😉👌🤑💵
Hi Don, yes I believe so and the service side of the business is heavily considered, hence limited lifespan on many parts
3valve started production in ‘04
Thats cuz this guys pushs what probably has a chance to make cash for him in some way He is an idiot
Thanks so much but even Toyota as reliable as they are are not necessarily the best in the trans department. Engines are stout and cheap to fix
Wow you can read the brochure. Dodge Ram 3500 is equipped with Toyota aisin 6 speed but it was crap. Need I say More?
@@mann_idonotreadreplies wow you can't read. The gearbox I mentioned is the same one from Lexus RX, RAV4, Camry and many other Toyota models. That makes the entire Toyota crap then.
You Scotty and the Car Wizard. 3 Must Subscribe channels. Thanks!
Thank you very much
Hi I love your videos and always find them highly entertaining.
U got lucky
What about the Nissan Murano CVT ?
I'm learning that any engine with 'Eco' in the name, do not buy and run away.
You're at a Chevy dealer and trashing (some) Chevy's! My '14 Honda Accord with the K24 2.4 liter 218,000 miles. Only problem was replace a sun visor.
Add to all these horrible cars is that now dealers are charging a premium to buy their garbage. USA car makers are in big trouble. Why would someone buy these cars and pay over $50-$60k or more for the privilege. ?
80,000 on my 2016 chevy trax no problems so far. lack of maintenance and abuse is the issue.
Wrong. You Just got lucky fanboy lol
Luv your hair cant say that to the car wizard 😂
Haha that’s fair. Where does Scotty fit in the hair territory? Lol
Can you make a video about best mazda cars to buy
Mazda 3 AWD
American auto manufacturers are based on maximum profits with little quality as possible. Volkswagen Following behind.
True
My 2001 5.4 is just fine it's a 2 valve motor 3 valve are the srew up
Cheers
My 4.6 triton pulled 2 horses and has over 275k miles on it.
Buy the 4.6
No
Is there a small suv that is affordable with a good engine? Looking to buy small suv for my daughter, and all I hear is small SUV’s have bad engines. Besides Toyotas, which you can’t find and are not affordable anymore.
Mazda cx3
I never understood why make an interference engine if your timing setup is faulty???
And remember everybody that has a WRX drives the living hell out of it. You be better off buying a rental car used.
which Subaru WRX’s are the best years to buy because I wanted one?
None
Toyota small truck Tacoma I just don't know what get in year or two
Nice
"Just do an LS swap" 😂😂
Haha for sure that is both powerful and durabile
Don’t get it how Subaru get called reliable since so many issues with engine
I agree, it’s really hit and miss, so e are amazing g and other engines are simply fragile
Great info! Have 2007 Ford expedition 190k miles but not a daily driver. I change my oil every 2k miles! 😆
What about crvs Chevy trailblazer
Well…..I would not
How about getting a car with a MOTOR and ditch those pesky engines? 😊
BMW N54 enginecan definitely last…. Have to be deligent and do those “maintenance” items. Heck, should add BMW e9x M3 to the list, the engine doesn’t last til 60k miles due to rod bearings based on your definition
BMW is Garbage kid
Hi everyone, I need some help. I am in the market for a new car. I want a small SUV but does not need to be AWD. Can you list 1 - 2 vehicles you would choose? I am 60 years old and do not need all the bells and whistles just a very dependable, long lasting SUV. Either new or newer. Toyoda, Honda ???
Mazda cx3
I drive a 2020 WRX with 31k miles and bought it new. It burns no oil. Nothing is 100%
You got lucky fanboy
There are fixes for the rotary engine. Fun, but fuel economy is the real issue.
I hate gray colors
There are too many cars in gray or silver
Do you realize how much money that you save people if they just listen? Great, great advice 💯💯💯💯💯
FCA, BMW And Mercedes Fanboys are very stubborn
Thank you so much. I try to for sure
I just wanted to correct you the 1997 to 2003 5.4 L F150 is a 2 valve motor not a 3 valve the three valve is 2,004- 2010
WHO cares. They both sucked
Do a video about 911 cars reliability.
You bet
I've got over 300k kms on my Jeep with the 2.4...much more than the 60k miles
You got Lucky FCA fanboy
Good to me I stayed away Chinese car products like Chery and Geely. Their after sales will be their problem if I own. Former Geely Coolray and Chery Tiggo 5 buyer here.
I have the exact same Tiguan that’s in this video and mine is over 60000 miles and going strong 💪 😂
Safe to say that the big 3 American cars are absolute garbage!
Yes yes yes
BTW, you all say Zed to clarify the difference between C and Z when pronouncing each. 😊
