Is There Really Such Thing As "Stress Free Singing"?
I see many vocal coaches (and their students) promoting the idea that "there should be no stress while singing" and therefore frustrating the heck out of singers who think there is "something wrong with themselves" because they can't, over night, achieved this "stress free" singing.
(this also gives a vocal coach "tribal knowledge" to keep you coming back to them as the only one who has the answer to this elusive concept)
This is nonsense and here's why:
Singing is like a sport. And with any sport, it's not the absence of stress, it's the management of stress that makes a great athlete.
    Think of it like this:
When Lionel Messi is going to goal, do you think his body is "stressed?"
(Anyone who says it isn't has never played a sport before).
But Lionel has learned the art of training his body and mind for that moment when it's time for him to step on the gas, take on 3 players and score what "looks" like an "effortless goal."
But you can be assured, it was not done "without effort" or without "stress."
Lionel achieved this through training his technical abilities as well as building stamina and muscle memory to achieve this consistency.
Now it is true that some styles of singing require less stamina than others and therefore can be accomplished with less strength training.
In other words, singing a light pop song requires very little "strength" in the sound whereas singing a heavy rock song often requires incredible strength and stamina.
This is also true for those (like myself) that want to push their "limits" and abilities to be all they can be. This of course requires more "effort" and technical training.
With that said, there are many stages to building this "stamina" and it's ok to "find yourself" as one first starts with "damaging street singing" (with total stress) and going through the different stages of learning how to manage this stress away form the voice through correct training.
If I didn't show the different stages of this process, and only showed "perfection", people would never learn that these people are all human, having to work on their craft just like yourself.

Hey Ken, I'm 17 and have been searching for a teacher to help me train my voice and put me in the right direction to being a front man in the future and playing music for people. I have found so many teachers and tried so many different things from them, but the first video of yours I found I was HOOKED! I tried your warmups and such, and felt like I was already improving after a few weeks. I will definitely be looking into your vocal academy once I turn 18, and have the money for it and moving out. You are the realest singer I have found and just want to say you are an amazing singer. :) Also I have a song request that I would love to see you sing, it's Misery Loves my Company by Three Days Grace, it's a short and extremely meaningful song to me I would love to hear you sing. I look forward to your academy!

Hey Ken! How ye doin' man? I 've been following your channel for a month now. For the record, I'm a beginner singer. I just started experimenting with my voice few months earlier. I know I'm untrained still but I have a question regarding my vocal range. I have a baritonish timbre almost as deep as Charlie Puth which led me to thinking I must be a baritone. But I'm confused about it now. A normal baritone isn't able to hit an A4 as easy and that too at such an early stage. Okay, it might not be that easy but it's that difficult either. Just a little strain and I hit it easily. I can't go any further than that though. Also I have problem hitting a G2. I can hit the G2 note but it takes too much effort. Could that mean that I'm a baritenor or a tenor? Thanks!

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  6 лет назад +2

I think you may be more of a tenitone, or possibly a benitor. Actually, to determine someone's vocal fach, you need to know the notes of both the primo passaggio and the secondo passaggio. The fact is that you can train to sing higher or lower, regardless of the label that is put on your voice. It's just a starting point to gauge what your center is.

It's more than Rock and Roll. Become the better singer that you can be! Learning to sing isn't about easy tricks, instant secrets, or just removing imaginary "restrictions". It's about an entire way of approaching your voice from the ground up and learning step-by-step how to build it into an actual world-class singing instrument.

Well, you DO sing "notes" but it's not necessary to know, for example, that this is a B-flat 4. But sometimes that information is helpful. But you can sing without necessarily knowing what the notes you are singing ARE, as long as they are on-pitch and correct.

Hey Ken! Thank you for your excellent singing tutorials! I am addicted to your channel! I contacted you a while back via youtube and you so kindly offered to take a listen to my voice and assess it and said I could send you a mp3 recording of my singing. I unfortunately neglected to take you up on your offer because I was afraid to share my voice with you but, I have been practising and working up to this and now I feel confident enough to send it to you. I hate to trouble you but I wonder would it still be possible to get you to have a listen? I haven't sung in front of people ever, so it would mean the world to me to have a professional who can sing as good as you to give me some advice. I am very shy about singing but it is the thing I am most passionate about in this world! Thanks again for your videos they have really inspired, encouraged and helped me. I'm not very good at singing yet, but with your help I hope to be soon. I'd love to know if it's possible for me? Thank you Ken for your mentorship!

I know evaluations are hard without hearing me, I am working on emailing you a sample of my singing, but do you have maybe a few ideas about how to change this? I feel happy and upbeat when I sing. I even feel like I put it in the song. The play back just doesn't show it

    hi ken
you are an amazing singer. i am hoping to buy you complete program, i dont have the best voice but i know you can help . i have a few questions before i buy it
what genre of voice can it help develop most? can i help with pop?
how do your dvds play, meaning is it you in the video?
and what would you say makes your program better than lets say singing success?
thank you looking foward to a response and hopefully buying your program :)

Yeah.. It's really quite unfortunate. Especially for instrument players, the first few opiate highs, whether it be prescription, opium, or heroin itself, often open up such creative vistas that allow for relaxed improvisation in unbroken, flowing threads. However, such an experience may lead them to believe that this feeling of "spontaneous composition" is their true musical nature, leading them to become addicted to one of the most destructive, degenerative compounds possible.

You should really do a video on Breathing, Glottal attacks etc. I know that's probably something you only do for your actually students, but a little short tip video would be good for those at home so they don't hurt their voices!

I think I have a good enough voice, I can sing in tune, but it's reaching the higher notes in songs that I find difficult

Hey Ken, great vocal!!! In my country, there's an amazing singer. My favourite are Candil (Dian Dipa Candra) and Judika. Check out! They're amazing. And, when I see this video, I want to learn more how to sing with you. You're really great!!! \m/...,
