Hi ken I really your version of this song, I have good chest voice but my head voice is not that good, the last note your belting is a transition from chest voice to head voice, I just cant do it please help,
Hey Ken, I like how you sing this, especially since you consider yourself a high baritone. When I was younger, I was able to easily Perry's range (in most cases), along with Bradley Delp. I've been singing all my life. Unfortunately, I'm nearly 60 and would love to get it back if possible. I spent years on a CPAP machine and wonder if that robbed me of my ability. I've been hanging around your forums and may opt for one of your programs if you think there's hope :D
Journey is such a once in a lifetime band that had the greatest vocalist of all time. Hard to do a cover, but you really did Journey proud on this one. Great cover man!
I also feel steve perry is the greatest ROCK vocalist of all time, glad to know im not the only one who holds that belief, although arguments can definitely be made for freddie mercury & chris cornell, steve was simply, just Above all the rest
Very well done. It's not Steven Perry its Ken tamplin and you made it your own I truly appreciate that. To many times people expect it to sound just like the original.
Teu timbre nesta canção lembra muito o do Steve. Você é um excelente cantor. Que agudo!!! Esta é uma das minhas canções preferidas do Journey. Parabéns!

since I had no money when I was a kid, Ive never seen Journey with Perry, but I have seen them with every post Perry singer, including Jeff Scott Soto. Ive seen Dean Castronova do this song and tear it up, and watching him play the drums to this was awesome. Amazing version from Ken as normal. I think this came out in 1983... I wore this tape out on the old Walkman also:)
I don't comment on youtube videos and I have the singing talent of a snoring ox but jesus christ can you sing. I love this song and your singing is unreal! Holy crap man... amazing! 👏
YOUR time is here, YOUR time is NOW, start singing better than YOU ever thought possible, today! We’re here to tell you, you CAN and WILL nail it, KTVA will get you there! kentamplinvocalacademy.com/christmas-sale/
Always enjoy listening to someone else singing these great classic and awesome tunes. Always a pleasure to hear someone who can actually show us how to sing, even if we might be a little weak.
Yes, I agree. Steve did sing pretty much exclusively with a R&B, smooth voice on the early Journey albums. Then, along comes the much harder sounding Frontiers " album in which Steve now has to grow accustomed to singing in this new style - wearing on his voice much more significantly than the previous 5 years of Journey album tours. Great points you mention in this video Ken. Maybe this contributed to his interest in 2 solo albums right after Frontiers and after Raised on Radio - to get back to the more soulful and R&B based singing.
Once I subscribed to your channel, I unsubscribed to other vocal coaches' channels since they don't give the proof in the singing. You are awesome, Ken!
something that i really love about Ken's interpretation of a song is that his vocals usually go to a beefier sound and with really powerful high notes, and you can still see that in this version even if he gets a little bit more gentle in some parts, you're truly a monster and a inspiration for me as a singer, keep rocking as always dude! 🤘
1:33~It seems that he sings different words. Real lyrics「how we touched and went our separate ways」 But his voice is so high. Especially 3:37~. I love his voice. I'm Japanese. Sorry,my Englsh ability is poor and then it isn't correct.
Lou Gramm was Foreigner's original vocalist. After hearing this I wish Lou and Steve Perry had replaced each other. Neal Schon is a Hard Rock guitarist so Journey was always a bit heavier than Foreigner but not as heavy as Styx got!
Steve didn’t really lose his voice, it just got more raspy and it got more weighty which meant that the top notes weren’t as easy for him overtime, partially from over-touring and partially from age since the voice tends to get deeper and more mature with age. By raised on radio he was 37 and by trial by fire he was 47. But it wasn’t like Robert Plant or Elton John where he had to get surgery. Maybe if he had used a more chesty mixed voice then his voice would have sustained better, but he probably wouldn’t have gotten the sound he wanted.
Steve Perry is a lot better than Jon Bon Jovi who sadly can’t hit the same notes like before. The Eagles’ one of the very few bands or i should say vocals who sound better as they’re older.
This course is awesome! ! I porches around 6 months ago and my voice is definitely getting better...I only took few singing classes in the pass..and now I'm doing better and better. ..I'm also practicing this song and I can hit the notes!! Love it. .."how to sing better than anyone else "
Wow! I love the way you hit those last notes. You made the song your own. I love Steve Perry, but what you did with this song is awesome! Definitely more strength!
Wow just found your page talking about Steve Perry... hearing you speak....Then BAM Wow!!!. Excellent ~ I sang a lot of Journey back in my rock band THE CHILLZ Good times!! Love your vocals ~~ keep on rocking Much Appreciation KAT
Man, you nailed it. You could of stepped in and helped Journey out.good job.I believed every word you sang. Very professional. I play bass and keyboard I can tell you did your homework.again good job bro.
Amazing Ken.. there are a lot people that don't quite understand, like singers do, how tough Steve Perry is to cover.. not only the range but the amazing emotion in that range.. great take on it again Ken
Hearing Steve Perry in 1978, for the first time, I decided I wanted to sing. Kind of my personal "Beatles/Ed Sullivan" moment. He was on of my greatest influences and learned his technique (s) over many years to emulate him quite well. At 52, I'm proud to say I can still sing the Escape album, through it's entirety, and finish with a few choice picks from Departure without taking a break. I call it a good workout/exercise. 😆 I was impressed with your version and grateful that you also revere Steve as one of the greats. I enjoy your videos and look forward to the next. Until then, take care and keep singing! Why?!?! Because we can!! 😁😁😁😁😍😍😍
From all the coaches I've seen and heard here on RUclips, you sir are the best in what you do your work is loved by all who have subscribed. Thank you, and wish you forever well. Thank you very much for your guidance.
Ken, you're a killer vocalist. I've seen a number of your videos now. I do notice that on your vowels you have a very unique tongue placement. It's pointed, and I don't know if that happens naturally for you as a mouth shape or if it's a conscious decision. You have great vowel sounds so I wondered if it was purposeful. Thanks for the upload!
Great point on running. I've noticed a huge jump in vocal abilities when running daily. Notes get so much easier to hit, hold, and do so with much less effort. I lift too, but want overall performance & ability, not tight, slow physical movement, even if stronger or bigger. This carries to vocals for sure, I can attest. Right on!
Try with Michael Kiske Vocal range, "I Want Out" from Helloween, it´s a very hard song like separate ways, can you do it? i think i will a very surprised to hear it Ken Tamplin
Hi, i'm back :D i'm doing the course and i'm learning i want out now :D of course there is many more things to work like vibrato and articulation but i nevermore had problems reaching these high notes my range is actually (G2 - G5), very heady voice yet but im working on developing a good tone first, i reccomend the course

Ken .. That was the best explanation i ever heard for that .. Im a singer and could benefit from that kind of information .. i sing journey a lot it took me a while to sing it in full voice with Power falsetto ..
Amazing cover from the most difficult songs of all time, well done Mr Tamplin. I like the way you sing the song and not try to copy Steve Perry, God bless you, well done.
It's an advanced way of relaxing the throat and tongue, and moves the tongue out of the back of the throat in order to create more space for greater resonance.
John gatti0- without a doubt you can... the voice is a muscle (actually a group of muscles), and like any muscle in your body, with good training will grow even into your 70's. Obviously not as quick and robust as in your 20's, but grow it will if you are willing to put in the time and effort with proper training. My course and or training will definitely help you if you're willing to work at it!
kEN YOU BLEW ME AWAY WHEN YOU DID LOU BUT DOING STEVE,and doing both of them without an audience to get the rush of a live audience is unreal, take a bow man,you sir have a hell of a set of pipes,i'm impressed again, you really need to contact and contract a crew, and take the money too,god bless
Man, you put a little extra on the end of that song. It still sounds awkward to hear you do covers but the work really displays your ability. Thanks, Uncle Brent
Do you ever get tired of hearing how awesome you sing, or how moving your voice can be? No matter how many songs I hear you sing I am blown away by each and everyone. I'm so glad I found your site. Rock On!
Hello Ken, I want to thank you for all the tips you gave me. The tests have been more productive as I use the tips you offer. Now I do not get more voiceless at the end of the rehearsals / shows. Thank you very much.
Hi! I was just searching Separate ways covers here on RUclips and came across your video. Im going to cover this song and this was very helpful! Thank you!
I like Steve Perry and you hit the high notes like him Steve Perry he's just has lots of energy Journey always been my favorite and I saw the video Separate Ways and when he hits the high notes and when I listen to Steve Perry and you at the same time it just makes me think that that you are very talented Ken Tamplin keep up the good work

THIS IS SO GOOD OMG. YOU ARE SO GOOD. I WISH I COULD SING LIKE THAT...... YOU ARE MY FAVOURITE MALE SINGER!!!!!!!! NO DOUBT!!!! WISH EVERYTHING GOOD FOR YOU FOR YOU KEN

He is baritone actually!

Here we stand
Worlds apart
Hearts broken in two, two, two
Sleepless nights
Losing ground
I'm reaching for you, you, you
Feelin' that it's gone
Can't change your mind
If we can't go on
To survive the tide
Love divides
Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you
One night will remind you
How we touched
And went our separate ways
If he ever hurts you
True love won't desert you
You know I still love you
Though we touched
And went our separate ways
Troubled times
Caught between confusion and pain, pain, pain
Distant eyes
Promises we made were in vain, in vain, in vain
If you must go
I wish you love
You'll never walk alone
Take care, my love
Miss you, love
Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you
One night will remind you
How we touched
And went our separate ways
If he ever hurts you
True love won't desert you
You know I still love you
Though we touched
And went our separate ways
No
Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you
One night will remind you
If he ever hurts you
True love won't desert you
You know I still love you
I still love you, girl
I really love you, girl
And if he ever hurts you
True love won't desert you
No, no
