How To Sing Like Steve Perry - Journey - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Jon Bon Jovi was the first to dub the term "The Voice" to describe Journey frontman Steve Perry and his singing. Today I'm going to show you how to sing like Steve.
After joining Journey, Steve brought a lighter, more pop and R&B influenced sound to the band which was a departure from their previous rock driven style.
Though fans initially resisted the change in style of the band, they eventually were won over by Steve's vocals and the new music.
Steve went on to provide the lead vocals on 9 studio albums during his tenure with Journey and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.
As we look at Steve's vocal style, I'll be showing you how he uses mixed air in his sound and how you can use vocal tract shaping to achieve those nice, open vowels.
We'll be taking a look at a version I did of "Separate Ways" as well as some performances from KTVA students Sonika, Sara Loera, and Kati Cher so you can see how we were able to emulate Steve's style.
I hope you enjoy the video and please be sure to share your feedback with me in the comments section!
Here also are the full versions of the songs from the video:

Hi Ken! I'm not questioning the originality of the vocals but I thought some of these were prerecorded, then filmed later? I had seen that one from Sarah and it seemed enhanced and I thought it couldn't have been a live take (?)
Another channel I watch said you were friends with Steve. True?
I see you inching to a million subscribers 👍

    • @kentamplin

The videos are made as we record the live vocals in one continuous take. You are watching them sing live, as the camera rolls. We bring the original video shot in closer for these How To Sing Like videos, but that is the only difference. It's the same live video footage of the original live recording we made, taking up half of the screen, cropped a little bit to center on the vocalist.
I haven't met Steve. I was, however, asked to audition for Journey after he left. It turned out that I did not audition, because I would have had to go on the road for a 5-year contract if they chose me. I just couldn't leave my family or take them on the road for that long. I would have missed out on 5 years of important time with my family. Several other bands you would recognize made similar offers to me at that time.

What Ken n other coaches do is teach you how to take the burden off ...to accomplish the sound with less effort and abuse ...i remember you Ken from the earlier days of CCM or Christian Rock ... I got to do a stint w a hard rock Gospel group and I for one understad the over use of the voice n its affects . when i heal from lyme n its affects on my voice ill look to take your courses ..you do seem like a great vocal coach...i think my friend Ross Southerland ( Guitarist ) knew you out in LA ...HE was in a group called outaline from TN . I'm fortunate I got to see Steve with Journey in 1986. He was at the top of he game then. I was a young teen and really liked Journey but didn't appreciate Steve like I do now. But I can tell you. The videos on RUclips doesn't really give him alot of justice. Maybe a couple. But the guys voice is a instrument all its own. Randy Jackson was the only exception the the famous lineup then. Each guy a very accomplished musician. But you could have cut the instruments and just listened to Steve the whole soul. Like Coverdale. No one does his songs quite the way he does. Props Ken!!

I had tickets to Steves Solo tour that he had to cancel i think in 92 : / . never got to see one of my biggest inspirations ...i can tell you though Jimi Jamison was incredible live though and imo those two are a couple of the greatest vocalist of that time .Sad to see Jim go .....God bless you guys .

That was an awesome tour! It was one of the first live shows I saw as a teen. His voice was still SO strong, but there were a couple tiny cracks showing at times... probably due to 80s excesses. My first show in '86 was Stevie Nicks... a textbook example of 80s excess! Fun show, but her vocals were terrible, and she was a hot mess. Glad she recovered!

Kens singing program is worth every penny. You will not be disappointed if you truly study what he is teaching. There was one huge key in one of his videos that was truly priceless. I sang professionally for 6 six years and developed nodules on vocal cords from singing four hour sets 4 to 5 nights a week. Now twenty years later I picked up singing again but learned what I had done wrong years before. Now I no longer fear the high notes learned how to relax instead of tensing up and hope I hit the note. Ken is truly the best. The craziest thing my vocal coach back then looked unbelievably like him. That guy was trained under Clint blacks vocal coach. But while I was giging Every night was impossible to practice.

So, I'm about to listen to this video (as I prepare to try and warble my way through Open Arms at a karaoke event tonight). I wanted to thank you for a particular observation you made, which I kind of instinctively knew, but didn't really focus on: you can move, seamlessly, between chest voice, i.e., "belting it out," and head voice, which I take to mean falsetto, and back again, without feeling like you're cheating or it's a sign of weakness. Seeing how, for instance, Joe Elliot, the lead singer of Def Leppard, moves from a growling chest voice to a kind-of growling head voice was an eye-opener, and it would make attempting a song like Photograph a lot easier than if you tried belting it all out from your chest. So, thank you for that! And now, I'm gonna try and pick up some tips for Open Arms, lol.

Steve Perry is one of my favorite vocalist. I believe his vocals on earlier albums - Evolution, Departure and even Escape showed a much cleaner tone than say Frontiers where you can certainly hear a more raspy, breathy tone. The brutal touring schedule, living on the road and singing these tough songs every night surely took some toll. I believe there were rumors of vocal nodules between those 2 albums as well, but regardless, you can hear a definite vocal change... not worse or anything, just different.

    Hi Ken,
Loved this episode--Steve Perry is one of my all-time favorites.
Really like what you say about open-throat singing and that all the vowels up top are versions of "ah".
I was classically trained and have been trying to fuse my classical training with other styles of singing. We always were told that up top, everything is a shade of the "uh" vowel as in "on the up-and-up"... with all vowels 'uh' [" *un* thuh 'up-'nd-'up'"]
This that you added that Steve is singing with a "French" nasality really brought home a new conception for me. I lived in France and speak French fluently, so now i can take both concepts... the ah/uh openness and the French nasality... and access a new timbre in my high range.
A cool exercise is singing French words with that ah/un nasal vowel like: un, lundi, mange, ange... up in the high register after singing them two octaves down in the fry register.
You have a great voice and seem to be a good teacher.
    Thanks for sharing

The ladies (you also) did an awesome job !
It would be interesting to see a video on how each of the ladies sounded at the beginning of your course and compare it to how great they sound now.
    Thanks for sharing with us.

I love those singers who train with you. That open throat technique is very well instilled in each of them. I must also compliment the teaching of the breathing techniques which is also really important. If you watch closely, you can see them pushing the air from the abdomen which is really important too!

Okay, you got and held my attention, not an easy thing to do. You are quite an excellent voice teacher/coach, my friend. I'm a bass baritone and until now, thought I was pretty much limited to Johnny Cash. As much as I would love to sing like Steve Perry, I still have my doubts. Lol.

Another observation you made, which I like a lot, is that you shouldn't try to be a carbon copy of the actual lead singer. I like, for instance, how your student did a very faithful, confident version of Faithfully, but in her own voice and with her own personality. Very cool.

  • @Markothunder

Very sad if Steve Perry doesn’t sing the way he used in his younger years anymore, but of course we cannot do anything about it because we all change as we age, but like you said, it shouldn’t have happen. We can still sing if we always properly take care of our voices and take a collagen powder if we can keep our vocal cords elastic like a rubber band with proper training and warm ups. I know most people want Steve Perry to return to Journey, only if he should try to get a vocal coach like you if he wants to improve his singing voice.

You really care that a person not only sings to the best of there ability and how dedicated they are, but most importantly they sing correctly not to ruin their voices. It's not about the money. You really care.Thank you

Ken, you do a great job capturing the vocal range of Steve Perry, but I am a bit disappointed that all the other singers were female, I would have LOVED to listened to how other GUYS might have tried might have reached those notes that Steve could do so easily....I realize that is no easy feat, but I DID enjoy your performance!

Steve Perry can not be duplicated, no one has ever been able to achieve this fete. Hold a note, breathe control, power, clarity..maybe but there is no copying the sound. No matter where I am or what I'm doing, if I hear his voice, I instantly recognize him. No, it's not the familiar songs that I know the words to. It's the sound his vocal chords and only his that make me stop and get a little shiver of recognition.
No offence intended to any of the many who have tried but unless you have the DNA of Ray and Mary Perry it's just mot possible.

Hey Frosty 2319, In all of my "How To Sing Like" videos, I still sound like Ken Tamplin and my students still sound like themselves, but we have a flavor of the artist and is meant to demonstrate how their "style" can be achieved safely. This showcases range, vocal timber and style for different color and flavors for diverse singing.
