Also as a cheaper option to the peat try coconut coir mix it with diatomaceous earth and clay soil as it's the most common. The coir is high in salt so it absorbs the oils and it's sustainable the diatomaceous earth is abrasive and like mites and other parasite while the clay adds stability to the mix it's also absorbent and abrasive.

Chickens have what is called a uropygial gland or preen gland. They use the oils secreted from that gland to waterproof their feathers and to keep their beaks and feet soft. As for the dust bath? That is to make their feathers less habitable to pests. Chickens can and will make their own dust baths, but you can encourage it to help keep your chickens pest free.

Everyone’s got their own recipe. Chickens will roll in anything, driveway gravel to dried horse manure in the pasture. The important things to note are 1.Low dust, so they don’t breathe in harmful particles 2. Fluffy texture 3. Course texture. Plain sand with any fine dust removed is fine. It’s fluffy enough for them to toss onto their backs and work into every crevice, absorbs oils, abrasive enough to break up old pinfeather casings, and if any dust is removed it won’t cause breathing issues.
