Watching and listening to your account of Ryder brought me memories of my O'Lee and Yellow Lab out of Cashman's Super Trooper. He and Ryder were the same age, He left us at 12 1/2 years; lots of love. His Protege, Sven, now at 4, is the main attraction! Thanks for the story.

Dang it....you get me every time with the dogs reaching the end of their life. Mines only 3.5 yrs old, already dreading that day.

Losing a dog is so devastating! I know when my chocolate lab "Shadow" left me I cried like a baby! He was the best upland bird dog I've ever had.

It would be really neat to see you go after some wild, hatched on the prairie roosters.

Wouldn't it be nearly impossible to get decent video of such a thing?? 😉

It's really disheartening that a show presented by the world's foremost pheasant organization, dedicated to improving habitat so wild pheasants can flourish, so frequently enlists the aid of pen-reared pseudo pheasants. Nothing wrong with people "hunting" them. But it sure seems disingenuous in this case.

Tip for anyone who owns a bird dog and upland hunts. When your dog gets older ( to me that’s 7+) limit the running in the off-season and substitute with swimming if possible. It limits the stress on joints and muscles while keeping your dog in shape.

100% agree! I start swimming as soon as the dog takes to it. I know everyone doesn't have a place to swim a dog but I like to swim for exercise and run them to condition their feet.

A mutt is a mutt. A dog is a dog. A k9 is a k9. But your hunting dog is family. Ours our family first hunting dog second. We raised five children and now have kid 1 2 and 3.

When you start a youth on pen raised bird in a scenario like this it can cut both ways. It gives them the opportunity to be successful and hopefully create a genuine interest in bird hunting. It can also create the illusion that you only have to walk 100 yards to get your limit and that's all that matters. No hard work required. PF is supposed to be putting wild birds at the forefront and advocating for new habitat development. These videos don't demonstrate that message in any way. Finally...stop teaching hunters to strangle birds that are already dead...it's morbid and makes the presenter look a bit psychotic. "Chicken by the feet, rooster by the neck..." Come on. We can do better folks.
