glad you like it! I also sometimes get pain in my top foot, and the two things I can say about that would be 1. Your shoes might not be supporting your foot properly...This is why for longer rides I'll wear running shoes over skate shoes because the support keeps my feet from getting tired, and 2. learning how to ride both ways (left and right foot forwards) can help this alot because you can switch out your front foot when one is getting a little tired :) Hope this helps!
I have had also pain. Your muscles need to get used to this kind of excercise. Shoes and proper pushing will also help. Use hole foot, start with heel, end with toes. And needless to say,if starts to hurt, stop.Rest, start tomorrow. Eat-skate-sleep-repeat :D
@Rudy Vergara I’ve heard that many skateboarders like using Jordan’s for skating, so maybe some basketball shoes can work? In my experience using skateboard specific shoes or running shoes have worked the best. Also many ppl have told me that buying some custom shoe inserts can do wonders but I haven’t yet tried this!
everytime I do big kicks, I have to reset my push foot (right leg) back on the board to regain balance and then push again. A bad habit that needs breaking! Thanks for this video!!
I can't believe you listened to my request 😱😱😱 I'm sure others asked it as well but... I still feel special 😂 great vid as always, can't wait to practice with these tips!
Wow this is a tip that is so commonly overlooked. Took me a full year before I realised I gotta push like this! Helps so much! Foot even feels less pain too now that I put the whole body into it!
Thanks for this bro. I've been practicing today and was really struggling to pick up decent speed anywhere that had even a mild incline or even flat. Will be giving this a go tomorrow. 👍
I've been skating for a few years and my front foot always hurt after an hour or so. I thought it's because of all the peter pans and stuff but no, it's only from pushing, and I can push switch too so both hurt feet hurt. LOL So one day I had a random chat with this jogger on the beach and he told me the correct way to run or jog is to land on heels first and rock forward. But all this time I thought you're supposed to land on the balls of your foot was a bad habit. Since then I used the heel to toe method and no more pain. So if you're slapping the balls of your foot to the ground to push and it hurts, try heel to toe.
That's bizarre. I run and every runner I've ever met says that landing on your heel is a fast track to injury. I can't say if it's the same for skating though, if it's worked for you that's great.
99% chance you need to develop your glutes and your posterior chain. You may have a valgus fault (about 60% of people with knee issues in my practical experience) it is possible you may have a quad imbalances. Knees over toes guy can help with quad imbalances. Maybe you have damage, but honestly most knee issues are fixed by dealing with posterior and quad imbalances.
I tried a variation of this technique this morning for the first time, and was surprised at just how big a difference it made even for an unco noob. More stability, more speed, less effort, great feel all around.
Beginner or not, videos like these are a great tool for thinking about the small things I overlook and being form conscious out there on the street. Going fast is fun. Knowledge is power. Thanks bro
Great straightforward video. I just picked up skateboarding again after 20 years and realized I was pushing "Mongo" as a teenager because I didn't know any better. Videos like this weren't around lol. Now I'm feeling super comfortable and wish I would figured it out back then!
Thanks! This definitely will help me once I have time to skateboard again. It's very hard to practice skateboarding when your country doesn't have decent roads or when parking lots are only available for malls. Thank you again for the straightforward video!
Thank you. I am a beginner and I am trying to get the basics as solid as possible before moving onto tricks and stuff. Just practicing pushing and kick-turning and that kind of stuff. This will help me progress more efficiently.
OMG this is the best pushing video I have ran across!!! Thank you! Think you hit some important foundational principles that no one else talks about! :)
The best way to think about it is to imagine how people run. People don't run with their feet flat or take small steps. Making sure to strike the ground with the ball of your foot to get the most effective push off is really important to going fast. Many beginners use their entire foot to stay more balanced, but it's really hard to get good leverage like that. Using the ball of your foot allows your leg to act as a natural spring force to launch you forward without much effort, just the same as the way a sprinter would run fast.
Just wanna say thanks. When I first learned to board I learned via mongo pushing (I was a kid don't judge me) gave it up and I'm trying to get back into it by learning how to push proper. Kinda got it down but my pushes were tiny compared to skating goofy but the trick of trying to balance on one foot while moving like unlocked something in my brain and my pushing went from a 2/10 to a solid like 6/7
Good vid, thanks. I just got back into longboarding after taking a few years off. Comfortable on a board but my pushing foot achillie's tendon got pretty sore. I think my form was trash and i was pushing too much with my toes, this helps.
Great video Ogden. Do you think you could do a video (tips, pointers) on developing that one-foot balance? This seems to be the most critical skill to have before even the techniques on pushing.
I'm a beginner longboarder and I've been feeling this horrible leg pain, like in the joint of my hips with the right leg. Watching your video made me realize the obvious. My bad posture is the cause of the pain, and not only that, but also cuz I only use my right foot to push. :( The way I see it I can fix it by 1. riding less often 2. pushing correctly (more speed = less pushing) and 3. using both right and left feet to push (I tried pushing with left one and almost broke my butt when fell on it LOL) In the end I just lack skill and technique, my body pays the price 😓 I'd appreciate it any other tips! Thanks for the video!
Only pushing with your forefoot puts more strain on your feet and ankles. Rolling over from the heel to the forefoot is a natural motion for the body since it mimics walking.
When I ride my longboard, pushing off takes up all my strength and om exhausted by the time I get moving, hopefully the techniques in this video will help me push off a bit smoother.
I know this is late but I want to share this because I discovered this the hard way over the course of a few years but I've been pushing wrong skateboarding the entire time. So the biggest thing I learned about pushing is you don't want to strike the ground and push it away from you, you want to gently put your foot down and push. I learned this the hard way because I would notice this pain in the front of my shin after pushing for a while. The easiest way to describe this is basically think about when you first push off your board from stationary. When you first go to push and you're standing still, front foot on the board, you push off with the foot on the ground obviously but what's not obvious is that you're not striking the ground when doing that. You're pushing off of your planted foot. That should be the same motion for when you're rolling, you don't want to hit the ground with your foot and push away, you want to gently put your foot on the ground (think like braking with one foot how you have to do that smoothly) and then push off of that in that same motion. It'll save your legs and give you way better pushes, it's harder to do but once you get it right you'll thank yourself.
What about using your heal when pushing and just the front of the foot? Meaning, have strides that are more natural similar to walking and running? Wouldn't that be more efficient and less prone to injury?
Is it normal to push with my front foot? I find it more comfortable yet i feel like i'm doing it wrong cause everybody else pushes with there back foot.
Ogden, have you ever dealt with heel/ankle pain in the pushing foot from long boarding? I'm new to it, and I still have pain in pushing foot after I ride, does his go away? Love all your videos:)
great video, I wasn't sure if I was pushing correctly, so thanks! just one question (not related to the vid, but would appreciate any help) - which board do you think would be good for a beginner (with poor balance) to get around town/campus - longboard or a cruiser?
that is some good advice you got above, the only thing I will add is that while I do find longboards easier for beginners, I used my cruiser board while on my campus 90% of the time for getting to class just because its so much smaller and easier to carry into buildings with all my other stuff. Both can work though!!
Whenever I push I can’t reach my entire shoe on the ground because of my board is so high. I end up only using half my foot to push with, however my toe keeps feeling pain when I push, is this normal?
You are awesome Ogden! I'm totally new to longboarding, and it actually feelt a lot better trying the motion you showed. Off topic question. You have an video about pumping. Thing is, I have a landyachtz drop hammer that has a stiff flex. Is pumping no go on boards like this? Anyways, thx for the pushing tips!
I don't think so! Your drop hammer should be fine for pumping as long as your trucks are loose enough! Mainly because the concave is pretty good on this board so it will make turning sharper and faster, therefore a super flexy board isn't absolutely necessary.
try pushing with the balls of your feet....or you might just need more supportive shoes/inserts. OR, you just gotta keep riding and build up your foot muscles!
The best tip would be to learn how to ride switch so that you can switch out what foot is in front when you get tired. Obv. this isn't the easiest thing cuz it'll take a month or two of practice (it did for me), but it really pays off. Other than that, bigger wheels (diameter and width-wise) really help knock out vibrations, and also, although relatively uncommon, you could buy some foam griptape (layer of foam under the sandpaper grip) to help, but this prolly isn't necessary.
@Felix The cat That makes sense but the wheels I'm using are already pretty soft (80a orag stimulus). I've found that once I'm warmed up and if I just skate a lot in general it's not so bad but Im wondering if there is anything else I could do.
dude Im really suffering in learning how to push, Im really afraid of replacing my leg on the board after pushing, and sometimes I fell from the board with my back I just hope your tips can help me with these situations of fear and bad balance (sorry for the bad English, Im from Brazil n Im learning the language
Maybe try to keep your front leg bended all the time (the one on the board) to force yourself to keep all the weight on it. Lean slighly forwards. Try to always keep your weight on the front foot, even when you have your both feet on the board.
