Getting a quality board and a skate tool is really important. As a kid my parents got me some cheap board which made it hard to learn anything with crappy trucks and wheels made of plastic. Perfect lesson episode for beginners like me🛹💙 now I know how to practice at skateparks. Skateboarding is more satisfying & a more effective workout than gyms have to offer. Thanks JB for teaching me how to skate safely!
I love skating, but more effective than the gym?? I’m not building any muscle at the skatepark. And I’m not getting a lot of cardio either. Maybe if your Luan you’d be getting cardio, but idk about the average skater.
@@XxSomeonexX1000 gym isnt all about building muscle. Skating promotes fat loss through cardio. Also works on your legs and glutes and mainly the core. The back also engages to provide stability. Shoulders to swing and turn. It really increases your stamina and makes you more athletic and fast 👍. You can do pushups before to warmup and also strengthen wrists and shoulders to prevent injuries. Some squats to ready your legs and jumping jacks and stretches 👌
It all depends what you’re skating and how hard you’re pushing yourself. The main difference between the gym and the skate park is adrenaline. This will cause your heart to pump harder than anything else. You don’t get that at the gym. Your heart is your most important muscle that hopefully never stops to rest so exercise it to keep it strong 💙💪🏽💙
Quad skater here who loves your videos. Also now a long boarder. Mostly for cruising around. This was really helpful. I got my pump carves from watching this a few times. ❤
For the lean push, have you tried just rotating your front foot to about a 45 degree angle instead of perpendicular and to one side or the other? When you set it at that angle, you can dig into either side easily while pushing instead of needing to off-center your foot! Great video as always, thanks for what you do.
The carve pump method is so much fun! Thanks for including it! The risks are definitely intermediate. I had my single worst skate injury while practicing the carve pump. There is so much nuance to getting this one correct and sustaining your speed or even accelerating (uphill, even!). When I got hurt, I over-rotated in the backside carve and fell backwards, hitting my head on the asphalt. Six stitches! It’s therefore important to keep your front at or behind the bolts. It is my experience also that keeping the back foot closer to the bolts gets you a more efficient push.

Honestly I just started skating! I have an Element board with Bones Rough Riders 56mm to cruise better on rougher roads and I'm learning how to push right now. This is literally so much help! I ride goofy and I'm getting my balance by giving the motion of power pushing; it's helping me get confidence in pushing and keeping balance. It's been raining here in Oregon, so I haven't been skating much yet, just practicing balance in my trailer; occasionally going outside and practicing the push. This may sound super noob, but I'm still having a hard time with balance when going into a second push to keep moving. I'm going to keep practicing and thank you for this video! Keep posting as many videos as you can think of man! Good content!
Dude you’re a perfect teacher! I am 40y and few months into it, painful but the joy of riding and learning little by little is amazing feeling. skateboard looks so simple till you step on the board and try it yourself. I am still a noob, learning ollies is long, easy in theory but hard in practice and trying to drop in is hard, tried maybe 20 times and felt same amount of times lol Feel like all skateboarders are going through falling and hard times. Thanks for your videos and peace from London, big up to ya ll

Awesome video!! I'm working on the throw down now. Very helpful! One thing I can say, is that i really broke down the Tic Tac in my last few sessions and I noticed I kind of piston my knee, which helps gain more speed. I don't think I've ever heard anyone describe it that way. Thoughts?

I really appreciate this one here as I have always pushed Mongo. Not sure why but I've done it all 40+ years of skating. I'm goofy and push with my right foot with my left on the back. It's easy to get off course doing this, Today I'm going to try to move my back foot more to the back center of the deck. I'm 54 years old so there is no way I can change. At which stage shall we begin losing the trucks? I am a new beginner, so I just wanted to understand if learning on lose trucks would be beneficial when begining.
Great video JB, from your experience teaching is there a general time frame of how long your students take to get used to riding switch? Also, I'm not sure if it's in a video already but do you have anything on foot placement positions for riding bowls and how to relax the body to flow better while riding? Cheers from Brazil!
Switch just needs to be practiced daily and everyone learns at different rates. Typically depending on athleticism it seems, although others are more ambidextrous. And yes I have two main video on for bowls for you in my video list. Enjoy and thank you Ramon. 💙🛹🇧🇷🛹💙
Im also a begginer, and not fully comfortable pushing at high speeds, so today I was pushing in a slight uphill, so I could push as hard as I can, but my speed stayed medium. Maybe it could be a learning tip?
Personal preference 💙🙌🏽🛹🙌🏽💙 some guys even push with their hands bc they can’t use their legs! Whatever works best is what makes skateboarding awesome!
Wrist guards and other safety equipment is always recommended to prevent injury and build confidence. The more time you spend on your board will prepare you for many various situations like having to run off when you hit a pebble 😂 Good luck! 🛹🤘🏼🛹
Its weird watching this with 30 years experience. I do all of these things amd didnt ever even really think about it. I dont push turn the way he showed though. My foot stays in the middle of the board and i just change pressure using my ankle to go left or right. I can chanhe direction at will left or right or even just back and forth just using my ankle. You almost need to to dodge scooters at parks.
Yes as you get better at turning while pushing you can just keep your foot in the middle like you’re saying. But I show it this way for people to understand and I also take into account that many people have tight trucks when learning. Cheers dude 💙🛹💙
I have a question. I am beginner with my 37y lol :D practicing with my 8y son :) So I have problem when I push to Power Push all good until I get very fast then my foot on skateboard and whole board start wiggle and I am losing control. So my question is why? Where is the problem in my weak leg musculature as beginner or doing something wrong body position etc?
Skateboard sounds like it is to loose for you. Use a 14m wrench to tighten the kingpin nut on the trucks. Experiment with what feels best for you. Hope that helps. 💙🛹💙
@@SkateparkLessons Thanks so much for the answer 🙏 Yes I already tried but probably trucks to soft maybe I am scared will brake on half. I should buy more solid trucks and replace it?

Man don’t tell kids to knee slide while on flat land. They will fuck themselves up. Knee slides are only for half and bowl kids. NO ONE knee slides while sk8ing street.
This is dope. Especially keeping your weight over your board. That tip alone instantly changed everything. Thank You. Respectfully.🙏🏾

Many of my video I include to take a deep breath, many people might look past that but I remind all my students to do that while learning something challenging. Visualizing yourself doing the trick helps as well. But I’ll make a video on this soon. Thanks 💙🛹💙

Love your videos man! 43YO and getting back into it! Lol. I learned and have always pushed mongo but am forced now to learn standard because I tore my right (goofie stance rider) calf muscle.

Awesome video!! I'm working on the throw down now. Very helpful! One thing I can say, is that i really broke down the Tic Tac in my last few sessions and I noticed I kind of piston my knee, which helps gain more speed. I don't think I've ever heard anyone describe it that way. Thoughts?
I think of it more as twisting your torso in a specific rhythm for speed 💙🛹💙
ooohhh yhat sounds like cruiser board pumping
the pump carve thing its like the type of motion u use on that technique
Do you ever see Ricky, Julian and bubbles when you’re at the Sunnyvale skatepark?
No unfortunately 💙🛹💙

I really appreciate this one here as I have always pushed Mongo. Not sure why but I've done it all 40+ years of skating. I'm goofy and push with my right foot with my left on the back. It's easy to get off course doing this, Today I'm going to try to move my back foot more to the back center of the deck. I'm 54 years old so there is no way I can change. I'm not on any social media but I'd like to enter a few videos to you. How can I send these phone vids to you ? Appreciate all of your videos bro.
Thank You so much!

For me, the best tip was to keep your body weight over the board while pushing.

At which stage shall we begin losing the trucks? I am a new beginner, so I just wanted to understand if learning on lose trucks would be beneficial when begining.
Yes! I’m about 160lbs and I keep my kingpin nut flush with the kingpin on the truck. Start with that and see how it feels. 💙🛹💙
@@SkateparkLessons, thanks for taking the time to reply JB. I'll definitely start practicing regularly.

Im also a begginer, and not fully comfortable pushing at high speeds, so today I was pushing in a slight uphill, so I could push as hard as I can, but my speed stayed medium. Maybe it could be a learning tip?
I do! And you are right! Thanks so much for sharing! 💙🛹💙
Good idea just make sure not to roll back down the hill fakie.
i think that mongo push stance is better to fakie ride and sw mongo for nollie.
Personal preference 💙🙌🏽🛹🙌🏽💙 some guys even push with their hands bc they can’t use their legs! Whatever works best is what makes skateboarding awesome!
Hey JB how do you not face plant when you hit a rock.
Good question, as you get better your reflexes will save you and you’ll just run off your board when it stops moving. 🛹🙌🏽🛹
Thank you for the reply. Are wrist guards good in the mean time? Or focus more on running out?

I am beginner with my 37y lol :D practicing with my 8y son :)
So I have problem when I push to Power Push all good until I get very fast then my foot on skateboard and whole board start wiggle and I am losing control.
@@SkateparkLessons Thanks so much for the answer 🙏
Yes I already tried but probably trucks to soft maybe I am scared will brake on half. I should buy more solid trucks and replace it?
Yeah bushings are dead lol I am not a such a big guy just 175 lbs. I replace it and is beautifully rolling now I could ride all day.
When I do tictacs I end up going backwards instead of forwards. Anyone know why or how to fix it?
Are you trying this on a hill? 💙🛹💙

Why are you teaching mongo? I thought it was bad form? Still love your videos!!!
I started by learning mongo first like many other skaters but then switched as I found it to be more comfortable and efficient for my skateboarding 💙🛹💙
If you're a beginner and you're here DO NOT MONGO PUSH lol

Advance to 2:50 to skip the 'blah blah blah'. Good video otherwise.
Thanks... I guess 😒
Man don’t tell kids to knee slide while on flat land. They will fuck themselves up. Knee slides are only for half and bowl kids. NO ONE knee slides while sk8ing street.
