  • Hey everyone, it's Annabel, and welcome back to my channel! Today we are taking a look at some orchids blooming at the moment- this is a bit of a deep dive on some of these plants, so grab a coffee and prepare for some rambling XD
    These orchids are all quite fragrant, so I think there will be one or two in here most people will like :-) I hope you find it interesting!

    I snapped a spike from spots this year :-( I don't think they loved the time they spent in the conservatory this winter, before I made the decision to bring them into the lounge in the warmer climate. The blooming is worse in general than last year, but they had to deal with alot of harsh environmental changes. Hopefully they settle back into a better pattern for next year!

    Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by! 🙂
    If anyone would like to comment on Rhynchostylis gigantea fragrance, I will use the answers to gather some info on how people commonly detect the fragrance! That way I can present the info in a better way to people who have never smelled it before 🙂 If you'd like to help out that would be amazing- I'll go first!
    Rhynchostylis gigantea: lemon/citrus, with a musky sour undertone 🚽🐈 Better in lower light 🙈
    My Nose References-
    Oncidium sharry baby: Vanilla
    Encyclia cordigera: Sweet hyacinths mixed with a fruit salad 🥗 😋
    Phalaenopsis bellina: Citrus and grassy
    Rhynchostylis gigantea grown indoors in the UK, temperatures ranging from 18- 25C during the blooming period. Phalaenopsis level light. You don't have to put all this info if you don't want to, but it might help us to see any patterns with temperature or light 🙂
    I hope you enjoyed the video! I've put links to other videos of the orchids featured here in the description, if you are interested 🙂

      I have a Rhynchostylis gigantea var spots that I grow in organic media. It is in a southern window in winter and outside in the summer in Washington DC. In the winter, the area is about 18 C at night and 24 C in the day. I detect the musky frangrance when the flowers first open but after a few days I only smell a nice sharp lemon frangrance like lemon rind. I love the gigantea frangrance and it doesn't fill the room although it is a big room.
      Other frangrances I smell:
      Sharry baby- vanilla
      Encyclia cordigera- a very strong perfume like jasmine. This is one of my favorite orchid fragrances! I wish I could wear it as a perfume.
      Paph Delantii- I smell roses

      I got to smell the flowers of Rhynchostylis gigantea 'Cartoon' in an orchid nursery and to be honest, they smelled not very good at all (at least for my nose). Kind of a sweet and spicy, citrus-like odor but also a bit artificial and sharp. The best match would be lemon rind with carnations and an undertone of burning plastic. This does sound a lot worse than it was, however😅
      Nose references:
      Sharry Baby: warm, vanilla-like fragrance with a hint of chocolate
      Encyclia cordigera: daffodils with minor notes of citrus (or peach) and vanilla. It has been a while since I smelled one.
      Tolumnia Carrot: spicy (a bit like nutmeg) and sweet

      Hi Lorena, yes I leave the nutrient mix in the reservoir and top it up at the next watering, occasionally flushing with pure rain water 🙂

      Have the white one with 2 spikes in bloom at the moment (under mars lights, in lava rock, 18-27 temps and 25-45% humidity). To my nose, it is a mix of musky french perfume and sprite (the soft drink). Slightly weird, but not unpleasant. I get why some may say 'lemony' but that does not feel quite right to me (a truly lemony smell would be e.g. cymbidium ensifolium for me). Also, it may be the low humidity at the moment, but the smell is not that powerful in my case.

    Just happened upon this vid huddled in thru snow storm and wanted to share what rhyncho gigantea smells to me. I have a fabulous ‘mix’ variant picked up recently at KS nursery. Was a blast looking at color options and all smelled the same. To me it’s a heavy sweet floral scent with a baby powder undertone. Definitely can fill a small room and I absolutely love it. But a friend of mine recently got a cartoon variant and smells a chemical fragrance that they associate to bleach like. So sense of smell is not only individual but definitely is a factor in perception. Enjoyed your vid as well, thank you 😊

    Genetics is really fascinating! A lot of living things have similar genetic mutations that cause lighter pigmentation or loss of pigment all together. Pigments are really important for life as a whole. (Pothos can turn off pigment as it pleases, if it’s getting too much light, it will “bleach” spots on its leaves to prevent chlorophyll from over producing.) It’s neat that your white hybrid Rhy keeps normal pigmentation on its leaves, but alters it’s flowers, as they usually don’t photosynthesis to support the plant. Keep this one!!!

    I have two Rhynchostylis gigantea spots. They are both blooming at the moment. First time (last year) I thought it was unpleasant although I loved the plant. However this year I did not find it unpleasant anymore and at times it even feels nice. I seem to be unable to describe fragrances, other than I like it or not like it 😁 and I am even allergic to some perfumes...
    I grow them outside during summer in the shade with bright light. In winter I bring them to my lounge where it grows in a west facing window, with sun late afternoon. Temperatures in the lounge where it lives temperatures are around 16C.

    You already know how I smell Rhy. gigantea. Encyclia cordigera smells very floral, I would say roses but maybe Hyacinth, definitely no coco. Sharry Baby I don't really smell chocolate, it smells more very sweet Mexican vanilla (well, if I'm very far from it, it is more chocolate but nearer I don't get the chocolate)
    Your schilleriana is gorgeous, very deeply saturated pink. I just broke down and bought one in spike, three branches, we'll see how many blooms it produces and what they look like. I bought it because it has heavily mottled leaves, I don't like the ones that have little of the silver.
    And thank you for the group photo. The peach is just 😍, best of the group

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад +1

      I hope your newly acquired schilleriana is fragrant!! Mine still doesn't give off much. very subtle sweet powdery scent, but only if you stick your nose into it. I know some can be quite strongly fragrant! But I think some of that may be diluted in the varieties where leaf colour has been more selected for. there was a post by 'the phal guy' I think, or it could be orchid nerd, on instagram. They said that the wild form with more barring on the leaves tends to be more fragrant than the other forms. I don't know if it is true or not, but mine is definitely spotting rather than barring....

    • @michaelmccarthy4077
      @michaelmccarthy4077 3 года назад

      @@TheOrchidRoom well, it comes from various locations and I think the leaf color/pattern varies by location, so fragrance may vary as well. But selective breeding surely plays a role in our domestic selections. I'd forgive yours for not being overly fragrant because the pink is so deep, others are so pale the pink is not terribly noticeable.
      I was really afraid the spike would dry up given where it was in development when shipped. It has, fortunately, continued to progress but still a ways off blooming. But I'll be sure to mention in IG when I post it if it is strongly or mildly fragrant.

    A lovely display of orchids. Regarding the Encyclia cordigera - there are many flower colorations and varieties have been bred, yet when I see some so labeled I wonder to myself if they are really hybrids. Many Encyclia look similar to each other, and hybrids between Encyclias can be hard to distinguish. In recent years many new species have been identified, albeit only with slight differences between species.

    I smelled a Phal amboinensis and I thought it smelled similar to the Rhyncostylis gigantea; I also see people saying that they don't like the musky smell of the amboinensis. I think I would describe the Rhyn. gigantea scent as fresh lemon juice with bit of plastic and musk.
    I learned in my Beekeeping class that bee alarm pheromone (at least for Apis mellifera) smells like bananas, and we were told not to eat bananas before we went out to the hives. So it's interesting that Cycnoches evolved a scent that resembles that pheromone.

      Ooh yes, delenatii is one, malipoense is another... there are a few more, I forget but I think the subgenus/ section parvisepalum of paphs are often fragrant. I think Paph magic lantern is supposed to be a good hybrid between a fragrant species that climbs and delenatii, better than the climbing species alone which can be awkward, but I forget the name 🙈
      Edit* Paph micranthum is the big flowered fragrant climber! I remembered 😆 but magic lantern is a better hybrid to care for j think.

    Yeah Rhynchostylis gigantea can be a bit much for some with the scent. I've grown to like it. They all smell the same to me. Now Rhynchostylis retusa smells like dish soap to me and a particular US brand Ivory dish soap. Now I have a cross Vandachostylis azure (R gigantea x V coerulea) that has a wonderful scent. And I don't grow sharry baby, I don't like the scent. I am too picky probably but I've never been into too many oncidiums or phalaenopsis. Phalaenopsis have to be fragrant species for me. Your schilleriana is beautiful. My delenatii were fragrant. Cordigera are awesome! Mine was floral scented.

    • @TheOrchidRoom

      Ohhh no, I was hoping retusa would be a better fragrance! Will have to wait and see! I agree about the oncidiums (shhh, don't tell anyone), I don't like the growth habit so much, or how big and grassy they get, or how they sulk if they go dry.... Last summer was a real breaking point for me with the oncis. They don't like the conservatory in summer, and I can't really pander to them :-/

    Phalaenopsis bellina smells fruity to me. Violacea fruity with spice/cinnamon.
    Your cordigera is amazing. Had one few years but never made it to bloom. Came in flower but can't remember its fragrance.
    Shame about Jumbo Puff 😏

    So glad to see your encyclia in bloom. Do you grow any prosthecheas? I’d love to hear a comparison between the care for the two genuses

    Beautiful orchids!!! Love your videos. Any words of wisdom on growing Rhynchostylis in semi hydro? I have one I really want to switch from it's bare roots to a sh pot. Alot of it's roots are broken and I'm very tempted to trim them so I can get it into a pot. I'm using leca as my medium.

      Yes, I have two actually, have had them for some time and both have bloomed a few times before 🙂 One is very fragrant, and one less so

    It's a wonderful orchid tour, I love all your orchids especially Encyclia ❤️... Please tell me do you use slow release fertilizer for heavy feeding orchids

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад +1

      Hi! No, I don't use slow release fertiliser, you can't control amounts and it isn't a good idea with semi-hydro anyway. I fertilise using a complete balance NPK + Ca + Micros, and adjust fertiliser depending on the current levels of growth.

    I bought a rhynchostylis at an orchid show, but the seller cut off all the roots that were hanging beyond the basket, I guess for shipping it into the country to not take up too much space. Im trying your method but humidity here is only 20/30 % so hopefully it adapts and grows new ones 😢

    My Bangkok Sunset was just the same...very bland in color. It would however, double spike all the time. I sold it....wasn't a fan of the color😏. But it was a very nice grower!

      Odd that there are some floating around this colour! I like the smell so I will keep it anyway, but the colours aren't fantastic are they...
