  • Hi everyone! It's Annabel, welcome back to my channel! Grab a coffee and come look at the orchids with me! Today we are going to take a walk around the orchid flowers, look at some of the orchids in bloom, where they live in the grow room or house locations. Lovely update !!! Beautiful blooms, spikes, roots... Those are the things that keep us happy 😃. Your Rinchostylis are doing wonderfully and love the varieties you have. Amazingly mine are both in spike as well which I am thrilled about because one of them is a first bloomer and the other one skipped blooming last year. They were growing outside during the summer but now they are in my lounge where temps are 16C this time of the year on most days ( I only warm in the evenings with fireplace).
    I also wish a very pleasant Christmas to you and your loved ones and a better 2021😍❤️🌟💐🎄

    May I wish you a very happy Christmas and healthy new year.. It´s almost 18 months since I started using Rain mix, liquid seaweed together with water from the Zero water filter ( this really solved my problem of living in a flat and not being allowed to install an osmosis system ) which you showed in a " fertilizer video 24/06/ 2019 ". The results of which have been amazing, new roots everywhere and of course a great show of flowers. I´m in awe as to the progress you have made since your first videos and whatever type of orchid you add to your collection, they all do so well. Keep safe

    Hi Annabel! Gorgeous flowers, thanks for sharing 💖.
    I've heard people from orchidweb on their youtube channel pronouncing plants with "ii" at the end - like parishii - as /iaj/. Might be American pronounciation, though.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад +1

      There are lots of people pronouncing things in lots of ways. Since botanical names are usually based on Latin, there really should just be one way- however it would be said in Latin. As a British English speaker, I have an English accent compared to other countries or American English speakers, so already we are probably often butchering the way they were meant to be said, compared to people more familiar with Latin or Latin based languages. It takes alot of time to research it, and I've always been of the opinion that, while it would be better to say it right, it doesnt affect how we grow and isn't worth stressing over. After some recent comments, I would really like to get it right, or one of the right ways, since I guess otherwise I'm spreading bad info... I had a discussion with some friends who are from countries with heavily Latin based languages, and they say they would pronounce lobbii as low-be-ee, and lehmannii as man-ee-ee, but that the two long ee sounds kind of blend into one. I don't think its worth arguing over and I don't think it matters, but rather than muddle through all the confusion, I've decided to stick with how Latin based languages would pronounce, where I can. The difficulty is that many are surnames of European explorers, so at that point it should really be looking up how that surname would be pronounced in their country, and going with that. Thats a very time consuming endeavour though!

    Wow. Your orchids are so beautiful! I have a question. I have a cattleya that grows but it doesn't open its' leaves. I have been told not to cut it and it will open but it doesn't. If it does open from the pressure inside the plant there are wounds on the edges of the leaf it turns brown but it heals and doesn't get infected it isn't nice looking. Could this be genetic or is it nutrient related? None of my other cattleyas do this. Should I cut the leaf to help it open before it tears itself or just leave it alone and hope it grows out of it?? Thank you and Merry Christmas

  • @jq1996

    Hi Annabelle, I love love your rhynchostylis, I recently bought one but its still young don't think it ready to bloom anytime soon. I did have a question, I planning to pot in semi hydro as it came in bark and I have so far let it acclimate to my environment for 6 months, my question do they require the fine rock layer on top? do you have any Phaiocalanthas, if so do they do well with semi hydro setup?

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад

      Depends on your environment- if you struggle with dry layers dessicating root tips then a washed smooth rock layer can help. Anything can do well in semi-hydro in the correct environment, it's all to do with how your environment interacts with the potting medium 🙃

    careful with holcostylis ms sunlight, mine bloomed for the first time this year and the blooms seem prone to botrytis

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад +1

      I've had it for 3 years. Botrytis is cosmetic only, just affecting blooms, which are the least important thing to me honestly..... Not something I'm worried about. If they don't get water on them, it doesnt happen 🤷‍♀️ If pests are present and they need spraying, then blooms are the least of my worries!

    Hi! How long does it take for the spike of a rhyncostylis gigantea to grow and produce buds? Thanks!

  • @NicoleDeanna
    @NicoleDeanna 3 года назад

    Gorgeous blooms! When your Catasetum leaves fall off and they are spiking, generally do you keep water reservoir empty to let it go dormant? I'm always conflicted when I see a spike and want to keep watering even though I know it'll go into dormancy soon.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад +1

      The plant should tell you what to do without forcing a dormancy 🙃 If it loses its leaves (triggers are seasonal- day length and temperature drops) it can no longer lose much water (water loss occurs from stomata in leaves) it also is less metabolically active as little photosynthesis so not using much water. So leaf loss- reduce watering, never let shrivel. Leaves still on, keep giving some water. You never want the plant to be shrivelled away as that indicates it is using more water than is available, so can risk death. This is why some people lose catasetum during dormancy. That, or watering when there are no leaves, the plant doesn't need much water and rot can set in, especially in cooler temperatures. In tropical climates many catasetinae do not go dormant. In my old grow room they didn't. If its spiking, it wants some water- making a spike uses alot of water and energy, and not giving enough can cause bud blast. Doesnt need to be the same level of water as during the growing season, but it needs some. The plants will tell you what they need 🙃

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna 3 года назад

      @@TheOrchidRoom thank you very helpful :)) I have one that I thought was going dormant and is now pushing out a new growth 😂😂 I'm going to avoid watering till the roots are a little longer, but I swear, these suckers have a mind of their own. Happy Holidays!!

      You can never really tell how old an orchid is accurately. I got the peach variety this time last year, my most recent acquisition. They will bloom when they are established, healthy and ready 🥰

    Do you have a systematic way for determining where to drill your drainage holes for semi-hydro? Ray Barker suggests about 1-inch or more up, but I'm wondering how much reservoir you like to give for your Phals vs Vandas vs Cattleyas vs the rest? Is there a such thing as too much reservoir? Would a seedling be happier with a higher reservoir?

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад

      No such thing as too high a reservoir. For thirsty plants I go halfway up, for self watering obviously no flushing holes. 1 inch from the bottom would create alot of dry layer issues for me, on average I do about 1/3rd of the pot- always proportionate to pot size. If you want to keep it lower in winter you can just not fill as high or tip some out after a flush. Ray Barkalow has his method for his environment, which I believe is more tailored to greenhouse growing now. No such thing as strict rules, guidelines can be modified and tailored to your needs. For more detailed info I have a playlist on semi-hydro conversion and maintenance ruclips.net/p/PL76ceLYvhJstRwMU7kdVqrjsD2t575EOK . Hope that helps!

      @@TheOrchidRoom Thank you for the advice! Your insight on the interaction between dry layer, the growing environment and how your orchids react is super helpful and is something orchid RUclips has been missing. Love your content. Please make a Vanda sanderiana thrive, it’s my favorite orchid but they seem to hate me

      No problem 😘 Sorry but Sanderiana isn't easy to get in Europe, I've really wanted one for ages, but with the UK leaving the EU it's not going to be possible to order from European nurseries with the current deal, so I may never get a Sanderiana 😥

    Hi I love your videos and excellent work. We are orchid growers based in Thailand and India. Can we use some parts of your beautiful videos in your channel on our website and youtube channel to show our customers the flower blooms of catasetum orchids and other species. Let us know if you are ok with it. Thanks for your consideration.

    How long would it take for the spike to grow?

    Your Rhy gigantea leaves are fatty fat.
    So, pronunciation of names like lehmanii is controversial. By rule, it should be pronounced ee-ee (as with filii in latin being fee-lee-ee), so lehmannii would be lay-mon-ee-ee. But, we're adding that i onto a name, which is why it is controversial; as in, is the second i actually pronounced? or ignored and it is lay-mon-ee? For example, Fredclarkeara, if pronounced by rule would be fred-clark-eh-are-uh. But, Clarke is the last name with a silent e, so we then have to pronounce it as fred-clark-are-uh (same applies with Stanhopea). In fish, a number are named after Dr. Axelrod. By rule, axelrodi should be axel-road-ee. But again, a name so we must pronounce it axel-rod-ee. So, because Lehmani already ends with the ee, and we don't follow conventional pronunciation with names, do we double pronounce the ee in lehmanii or not? I am of the "no" group, but the second i should be acknowledged, thus lay-mon-ee-aye. There are things I am adamant about in pronouncing binomial nomenclature but this isn't one of them, both sides have a fair argument.

      I've decided to go with ee sounds and stick to that because I just can't with all the name and pronounciation controversy. I had someone telling me off / mocking me for using an English spelling of a totally non orchid related word recently. ise instead of ize at the end of something. I'm English therefore my spelling is the English form not the American form 🤦‍♀️ I just can't 😂 I'll just grow the plants and mumble the names quickly 😂

      Or Soldering apparently 😂 I don't know if you ever played or knew pokemon, but there was a gym boss called Lt Surge. So I called him Lt surge forever. Like... L. @@TheOrchidRoom never played Pokemon, I think I was a bit old by the time that came out. Well, 1997, so, yeah, I was busy clubbing four nights a week and working full time days back then. But now I'm curious about soldering. I've heard Roger say soldering (sod-der-ing) iron, which is the same as we say it here.

      We say Soldering (sol-der-ing) Roger must be an anomaly 😉 My boyfriend is in construction/ engineering teaching and they all say soldering also. I only noticed it while talking to Melissa on a Zoom call, she said sodering and I'd never heard it before 😂 Tomato, Tomato 🍅 🙂
