13:58 Actually the danger of Dr. Strange smoking after the surgery is even more immediate. Hospitals are full of oxygen tanks... and you could put together the rest from there.
Another example I would say is Hulk. Banner was just a timid guy just trying to save a kid from doing something stupid only for him to turn into a grotesque monster as a reward for his heroics
Fun Fact: Nightmare were originally going to be the main antagonist of Doctor Strange 2 but it than got retooled as Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
Ditko's talents really shine in Dr Strange. Stories involving psychedelics and noir always suited him best, and a story that revolved around mysticism rather than science was very welcome. Also, a minor correction, The Human Torch featured in the anthology series IS Johnny Storm from the Fantastic Four. This is where he first encountered many prominent villains such as the Wizard, Paste-Pot Pete(who quickly changed his name to Trapster to avoid humiliation, but the damage had already been done), and the Beetle. The Golden-Age android variant of the Human Torch did not return until the Fantastic Four 4th annual in 1966. I suppose the line of thinking was that since the Fantastic Four was the best selling comic until Spider-Man came along, and most of the readers were teens they thought to give Johnny his own adventures.
Chandu the Magician is an AMAZING radio series, probably one of my favorite dramas. The characters are great, the story intriguing, the villains memorable, and the conflict surprisingly believable. And it has probably the GREATEST catchphrase ever. "Evil has no power except that which is given to it."

Linkara, I'd like to thank you for introducing me to the world of comics. I've picked up a few graphic novels that you recommended, namely Atomic Robo and Steam Wars, both of which I've enjoyed hugely. I also started reading the new Rom comic from IDW, only one issue in, but I'm sold already. Your show is wonderful and I wish you best of luck in the coming years.
The version of Human Torch in Strange Tales at this time WAS Johnny Storm, though. My apologies if somebody else already pointed that out. I didn't want to read through 324 other comments to find out. EDIT: Having now skimmed the comments, I can see I'm not the first one to point this out. I should've realized that. Oh well, love the show! ^_^
having seen the movie, i can say it did a good job at Stevens character, and just like ALL MCU films, every main character gets at least one legit funny line or moment, i actually like how we kinda see how the nerve damage occurs in the movie, having his hands go through where the meter things are on his car (pardon my ignorance, i dont know about car stuff) Mordo and the Ancient One being changed is a bit off, but the way i see it is that the mcu is another elseworld type of story, some changes can be made, and i really love the cloak of levataition being more like the magic carpet from alladin
I'm shocked the Dr.Strange went from one of the Marvel characters I knew the least about before going into his film. To now where he's one of if not my favorite character in the MCU and that his origin movie was my favorite out of any of the origin movies. And that had a lot to do with knowing almost nothing other than he uses magic and that I saw him in one Hulk short animated film. It helps that I really enjoy Cumberbatch's work. But what really sold me on the film was the world and how it and his abilities are so much different from the rest of the MCU. With Scarlet Witch being the only other magic user yet I can't even recall if they have ever said her powers are chaos magic and they only have her use them in generic ways. Also just loved the visuals in the movie. And probably my favorite scene from both Infinity War and End Game was Strange taking on Thanos one on one.
its kinda cool to join the fourth wall community here 8 years after the first episode and still get new episodes of Secret Origins Month. though this entire post and whatever heartfeltness it may have held is instantly disregarded due to Marvels unending character line up XD
Oh come on, Linkara, you missed a good joke with the figure bound in chains! "What, you're dreaming of Marley's Ghost? Just keep Christmas in your heart and you'll be fine."
Actually that's just a rumor. Ditko actually drew Strange to look vaguely Asian in his first few appearances since he believed mystic characters should be Asian.
Long time viewer, first time commenter. Not only is this particular video amazing (as per usual- but yeah I love the magic side of comics heroes, it's so underutilized but awesome with characters like Wonder Woman, Doctor Strange, Zatanna, and so on), but the show as a whole has been a huge pick-me-up when I need it most (like dealing with PTSD and depression among other things) due to your mix of humor and drama (and humor DURING drama) just being... well a lot like why I like comic books (for it's a place both of drama and the ludicrously awesome things that you WISH could happen IRL mixing into something that's sometimes terribly done but usually worth giving things a chance). Plus, your show has made me a lot more aware of the process of critiquing a work, as well as certain tropes and dead horse ideas that get used so often and so poorly, which as a whole only makes me like actually good comics all the more; plus, I actually got into the Thing because of your reviews of the Dark Horse comics, and it's now one of my favorite horror movies of all time. Hope you keep making bad comics feel the burn for a long time to come- and hope you get more subs and viewers. You definitely deserve it. ^_^

in my opinion doctor strange is the best hero there is and it was really great to see your video on his origin due to you being the reason I want to get into comics
Y'know when I was like eight I had this nightmare where me and my family were being chased by this huge leopard/panther in a very minimalist art style, so I think this guy might just be a wuss.
The reason Strange never "opened his eyes" was because Ditko intended him to be Asian. Thus, he drew him with "Asian-looking" eyes. It was only later they made him into a white guy.
redleader antilles Here's the thing that makes what makes me think otherwise: in that Dr. Droom story, the clearly white protagonist physically changed into an Asian man when he gained his magic powers, reinforcing the idea that a sorcerer should be Asian. Whether or not Strange WAS Asian is unknown, but you can't deny he was drawn to resemble an Asian caricature.
I would be inclined to agree but as Brian pointed out, at that time an asian caricature would be more.....well racist. Though I think you are right that Ditko was at least thinking about an Asian esq look for Strange even if he is not actually supposed to be Asian. Funny that a film that white washed could have had a good excuse for a race change for its lead.
Actually the human torch in strange tales was the FF version, Jonny Storm. He was just so popular he got his own solo series in strange tales, with Ben Grimm joining him later on
Little side note two years later, and not trying to sound like I'm trying to argue, but why assume it was the original torch because of the time frame? Especially since this was done after the fantastic four came out... Just curious. I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm sounding like a jerk. Just something I'm wondering.
Caz to be fair, I could actually follow the plot of DS when compared to Inception, and I think the designers and animators of DS did a much better job with the aesthetic, they had a better excuse to use it at least
Oh good. I saw the movie last night, and even as I was coming out of the theater, I was thinking, "I hope Dr. Strange will be part of Secret Origins Month. It'll be great to compare and contrast." Hooray for topicality! Still, for a master of black magic, Dr. Strange seems to spend very little time in swamps.
I'd love to see a comic/movie in which all the inscrutable characters were combined. Dr Strange: 'The currents of magic are disturbed' Judas Traveler: 'Just as I foresaw.' Dr. Fate: 'But the cosmic balance!' Ancient One: 'Yes verily...'
The idea for Dr. Strange was entirely Steve Ditko's, although a bit of a variation of the magician Dr. Droom created by Lee & Kirby a couple of years earlier and who only appeared in 3 issues before being brought back in the 1970s and re-named Dr. Druid to avoid confusion with Dr. Doom. The notion that Stan Lee came up with the idea inspired by old radio shows was made up a decade later. And the Human Torch in Strange Tales was the very same Johnny Storm who also appeared in Fantastic Four.
So Nightmare first appeared as a Doctor Strange villain. First time I saw him was in a Wolverine/Venom team-up in "Marvel Comics Presents". By the way, that series would make a good source for quickie episodes.
