I had the priveledge to meet him in 2011, shortly before his death. It was a sad occasion though because he was ravaged by Alzheimer's ....I pushed his wheelchair to the stage, where he would get up, walk to his place and take his seat. When the music started however, he came alive, and all was just like it had always been. It was the second time I'd ever seen him. Once with Doc and Merle, John Hartford, and his band in 1980,...THEN, this occasion. Full circle.
@@bryankeller3492 I met Mr. Scruggs at Sunset Park in the 70s where he signed my copy of his book and we spoke briefly. What a Gentle Giant! May he R.I.P.

Proud of Earl Scruggs, a son of Cleveland county North Carolina. Left that textile thread mill to pick with Bill Monroe. A legend that started with 3 finger roll "Rueben" tune.
I like how Earl is doing percussion with his banjo while the others solo. There’s a guy who’s seen it all. You can tell he’s just tickled to be up there with a group of relative youngsters who are keeping the music alive.
Hehehe I do that with my guitar with my thumb and index finger. do the downbeat with he side of my right hand. make great percussion. And yes, I remember them looking up to greats like George Jones, Conway Twitty, etc., and like George Jones (he wasn't a favorite of mine, but he did have a 'signature' voice. Looking up to Johnny Cash. And now I see the younger musicians with them and looking up to them! Every generation has this phenomenon., and I suppose it will always be that way!
I know how much you love this music, Daddy. I know, you're looking down from heaven smiling. Know, you will never be forgotten. My life ended the day that I lost you. Rest in peace Daddy until we see each other again. You will forever be in my heart.
Vince has done a great job , writer of 1 of the best gospel songs ever , strong ties to gospel music being married to Amy Grant , He’s great at bluegrass , 1 of the best country artist ever , conquered rock music being a former member of pure prairie league and currently 1 of the Eagles and doing a great job
Daddy, I know you're looking down from heaven smiling. I would give anything to have you here with me. My world will NEVER be the same without you. This is a heartbreak I will NEVER get over.
I knew Grandpa Jones, who played Drop thumb or Claw hammer method and he was from Niagara Kentucky in Henderson county Kentucky where I live now. And Bill Monroe, was my distant cousin from the same county I am from Ohio county, Kentucky and I seen him every year at the Rosine Bluegrass Reunion. I wished I had met Earl Scruggs I love his style of playing the Banjo most thank you Earl.
2 of the best guitarists on the planet on the same stage. Vince & Ricky are the best flatpickers I've ever seen and can switch to electric guitars with ease.
4 great guitarists. Marty can hang with anyone on the stage, might be the best if the 4, and Earl plays guitar as well. As far as flat picking, Tony Rice is the best that's ever been. One of the best singers too.
Earl Eugene Scruggs (January 6, 1924 - March 28, 2012) was an American musician noted for popularizing a three-finger banjo picking style, now called "Scruggs style," which is a defining characteristic of bluegrass music. His three-finger style of playing was radically different from the traditional way the five-string banjo had previously been played. This new style of playing became popular and elevated the banjo from its previous role as a background rhythm instrument to featured solo status. He popularized the instrument across several genres of music.
Wow what a treat to watch and listen to so many great of the greatest bluegrass performers on stage at the same time playing together. Thankyou so much for sharing this it really made my day!!!
If anyone has a recording of Lil' Jimmie Dickens in the summer of 1993 at the Opry, I would love to see it. My grandparents took my aunt and myself. I was 13. I would love to see it again as an adult. There were many other greats performing but don't remember. I got to meet Porter Wagoner and Reba's back up singers. We watched Marty Stuart and Tanya Tucker on an Opryland stage. It was amazing. It was a hot summer and had gone on a water ride not realizing we were going to the Opry a little later. I was still soaking wet and wished I had a chance to clean up. It was amazing experience nonetheless!
God I was born in 1994 and even before that country was so in its prime now nearing 2020 it’s sad how it’s going but thanks to Luke Combs he is keeping the 90s country sounds alive if u don’t know him look up on Apple Music and RUclips
Those guitars are worth as much as a car (if you have a really nice car) some can be worth as much as a house, but they couldn't be in better hands. That's what's awesome 'bout it
You haven't! I really believe there's equally young amazing talent 'emerging' on the Bluegrass stage, not really new because though they're young, they've been working hard at their craft for many years. Bluegrass people nurture the next generation. Off the top of my head: Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, AJ Lee, Sullivan Tuttle, Billy Strings... I think music is safe enough for another while!
Research and you'll find several events, Bluegrass festivals some lasting for days. In my state of North Carolina. Also check out just to name a few West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. If it has mountains it has bluegrass festivals and events.
It's rare for someone to look better in their late 30s than in their early 20s, but Alison Krauss really changed for the better over the next 15 years. Compare her appearance here to say her CMT Crossroads show with Robert Plant in 2008, in which she is truly stunning.
This video is awesome!!!! I love how sound man think felt he had the need to turn the individual instrument mics up & down instead of assuming someone has enough sense to step up or back off. He did eventually figure it out. lol Watch the old Flatt & Scruggs shows. They would get in there, get it & then get back out. Notice Earl's banjo can always be heard in this video. He knew how to work the mic as well as the sound man. lol Great post!!!!!
I think they must not have had a good sound check because the mix was changing drastically for the first couple of songs, I think Alison’s mic wasn’t even in FOH until the solo. Instruments with pickups can be an issue for levels, I find when I do sound the instruments on a mic usually the player controls the volume, but instruments with pickups seem to need some help, generally.
Don't know how I've missed seeing this episode of GOO TV until just now. I have been fortunate enough to see all these folks perform live on several occasions. Never all six together but do remember seeing Gill, Skaggs Stuart and I think Huskey Jr. on stage together at least twice. Have seen Gill and Stuart many many times. So entertaining! It's just a shame none of them ever learned how to play an instrument(s) very well.
There will never be another Earl Scruggs. God bless him.

I fear that is true 😢. How awesome 👏 was this performance 😀👍🙏.
The ones with such talent will not get the flowers they deserve because it will not fit the Main Street mold
Sure you will. When Del McCoury and his band are there or when Dailey and Vincent are there. Rhonda Vincent, too.
Earl Scruggs, & Ricky Skaggs forgot more than these new country stars will ever know. God bless, them both.

A new champion emerges. Give some Billy Strings a listen...
Vince and Alison are both great singers when they are singing lead but when they sing backing harmonies they are no doubt, the best in country music!
The best way to listen to Alison Krauss. Close your eyes and hear her sing. Voice of an Angel....
She is so young here!
Amen! The whole group is the best.
Don’t close your eye’s Whitley

Love Marty Stuart
True bluegrass like this is great: Vocal harmony, bass, banjo, guitar, mandolin..........all acoustic. Love it!
They all sing and play like it's a second skin. Thank you all
You can see Earl Scruggs shake his head in amazement at Vince Gills singing of Lonesome River. What a performance.
Is there anyone better to harmonize with than Vince Gill?!! My lord!! God blessed ol Sweet Pea with that voice!
With Allison Krauss......agreed, with anyone I guess.
Voice of an angel💕
Vince Gil, Allison Krause, and Kieth Whitley are like nothing our kids could ever appreciate now. It’s so sad.
27 years ago, certainly have enjoyed these great talents many times, just sorry for anyone who has missed them!

Sounds unbelievable. True American music. Marty Stuart sure is a handsome piece of work.
There is something ethereal about straight voice harmony and those acoustic instruments.
