The fact that they were able to carry this joke for 6 minutes without getting stale is its own kind of accomplishment. A lot of SNL skits can't make that claim, so well done!
To be honest Bill Hader, Jason Sudekis, Bobby Monyhan, Kristin Wigg can actually pull that off Kate McKinnon too but still these guys are the reason why some skits can be long and funny.

Bill Hader has been doing this since before John Mulaney (I’m sure that’s spelled wrong) even came on the scene. No hate to him, I haven’t seen enough of his stuff to know how to feel about it. But this is the genius of Bill Hader and maybe Fred Armisen, both creative powerhouses. The fake game show/fake sports caster trope came around as an evolution of mockumentaries. All of which were pioneered by the likes of John Cleese and company. The simplistic nature of a simple set up but long winded story is perfect for comedy. Anyways. Shoutout to Mulaney, I’ll give him another chance bc of your comment!!
