Kenan is a MASTER of comedic timing. He has that rare gift of being "naturally" funny. Many will disagree, but I consider him to be one of the funniest performers in the history of SNL.
I think he's less regarded mostly because his characters, while being incredibly diverse, aren't as WEIRD as those from his costars. But he is consistently great. I always smile when he pops up.
I agree totally with One Love and Swinefuzz. To be honest, he wasn't my favourite at first, but his style grew on me as well as my appreciation for his solid contributions to SNL. I would not say he is underrated, but his style is somewhat exquisite. SNL skits are often remembered by the extravagant performances of cast members, but many of these skits wouldn't be that memorable without people like Kenan, who had perfect comedic timing and sense of stage presence. The more I rewatch his work, te more I discover how important his role was, like the fact that the editing room often switched to his face/posture to string two shots together to keep the flow going, sometimes even keeping jokes/laughter from falling flat too soon.
I'd say he was the workhorse or the backbone of SNL. He doesn't always get his moment to shine but he's a PIVOTAL cast member. So while he won't be as famous as a Hader or Wiig, he's a very important reason the show works.
