My mom used to make this potato pancake for me as a child. I can remember it vividly. The potato cakes with onions in it, and she served it with applesauce. Thanks Mom I Love You......
I just made these for the first time ever and a Little bit of advice for anyone, someone like me. Use less flour! Whole cup of flour in the egg and mashed potato mix was way way too much, to then put it on more flour. Also add more seasonings, spices flavoring to ur egg potato mix because all that flour easily takes it away and left mine really Bland. Super happy I found this easy recipe! Going to have fun tweaking it just a little to suit my family's needs. Thank you
mama was born in 1920 and often made potato cakes from leftover mashed potatoes, but she never showed me how she did it. now i know her method. thank you very much for this video!
Mom used to cook these for me as a kid.Im an old geezer now & wanted some of these but didn't know how to make them. After watching 3-4 vids on how to make these I tried your method. Hot dang, sooo glad I did and now that I know I'll be making them much more often.Thank you for you video. It made me so happy to have those memories back again. They were delicious. Thx again.
My Grandfather was orphaned at 4 after his Father died leaving his Mother with 9 children. It was the Great Depression . He found good employment as an adult but he never wasted a thing and when there were leftover potatoes you knew what was for snack that night. I sure loved those things. One of these days I might try to make me some now that I know how 🙃
Your original recipe was enjoyed by me, prepared by my papaw in the mornings post holiday visits beach home to WV. They are, in my opinion, the best way to enjoy potatoes. As a child, I only tolerated mashed potatoes, however these were my favorite way to enjoy potatoes and still is. Thanks for sharing this WV Post Holiday/Visitin’, papaw cookin’ for the young’ns memory.
Yes ! Boy you took me back to my childhood when my late mom used to fix potato cakes like these for our family! I am so glad you refreshed my memory on how to make them, because I had forgotten how to make them! Yours looked just like my mom's when she made hers.yes my dear you fixed them right! I will fix them for dinner tonight! Thanks again! I am a first time watcher on your u-tube! I like your recipes so simple to make!!
Great recipe, you can make these without the egg and flour in the potato mix if you prefer a lighter version I only use it to coat my tatties before I fry them
Thank you for sharing this. Arby's no longer has potato cakes, so I've got to find a way to create them at home. And, with your help, It hink I can do it.
I grew up eating these… I smothered mine in ketchup looks delicious 😋 I like a lot of diced onion in mine..Thanks for the ideal of the extra added ingredients!
Love potato cakes. Your ingredients are much better though. I don't dust in flour but will going forward. It made them crispier. Take care. Love watching your recipes. God bless you and yours.
Tried this recipe using boiled potatoes carrots peas green beans corn sazon Goya and a little adobo seasoning with cumin I mixed with egg and bread crumbs came out so good topped my cakes with salsa
I would’ve swore this was another Great Depression idea my grandmother, and great Gma, came up with, but I guess not.😂 I never thought to ask her how she made them before she passed. I’ve tried making them numerous of times, but mine always fall apart, and now I see why. I’m glad I found your recipe, and look forward to trying it in the morning, it’s been almost 20yrs. Thank You
Just like my momma made them. I just had a thought maybe ad some cooked breakfast sausage too the potatoes and add sharp cheddar cheese. Mmmm. Good video.
🌹 They look delicious! I have never made them before, but I’m going to try it! ♥️ I hit the thumbs up before I watch your videos because I know I will like it 😃
Those look good and ham is tasty but what could be better than bacon & cheese in them? I like using Tillamook brand smoked cheddar baby! You'll love me like how I love you!! Ka-chow!
I’m Irish and they are a favourite here I make them all the time👍 I hope you don’t my asking but your carved wooden fruit bowl on the counter top did you get it in Co Clare that’s where I’m from and I know the guy who makes them ?
OK, just got through trying this. Like so many other things, experience counts for a lot and this one really does need some experience. Especially for someone who does not know how to cook (like me). I had some leftover mashed potatoes that I cooked with skin on because I prefer them that way and didn’t think it would make a difference for patties. I did pretty much everything as the video showed but had previously added some corn because I thought that would be good. The things that made it to the skillet would have changed the gorgon to stone. Those deft movements with the hand cannot be duplicated, I guess you just have to learn how to do it. They looked more like Apple uglies. Tried one on my son and he said, and I quote, that tastes wrong. Kind of sums up my cooking skills. Maybe I’ll stick with the microwave for a little longer.
This recipe originated from Ireland just after the famine. The Irish version is called Boxty. Try making boxty, in my opinion boxty is far more tasteful
I really like the recipe and your overall presentation is very nice but, you need to work on the audio. I know you're in a kitchen but it sounds like you're in a kitchen. Try a remote lapel style mic.
Thanks so much for watching. This is an older video before I had my lapel mic which I have been using for the last year now, and it has definitely improved the sound quality. 😊
How can you be sure they're cooked? I tried making a recipe like this last night but the inside was too similar to mashed potato texture, even though they seemed cooked through, and I was too scared to eat them since they contain eggs. What is the inside supposed to be like?
The basic recipe seemed a bit off, but I followed it anyway. It seemed like it was a lot of flour, and it was. All we tasted was the raw flour. Any ideas?

What a sweet memory!
Yep! Me too! I can actually taste them with the memory of them..I was a 1960s child.

I wish I read your comment before I made it. I completely agree. Less egg needs to be added so that less flour is needed. Absolutely more spices.
My natural instinct was to use less flour as well!
Glad I'm reading this before making them.
Thank you I will use your tweaks!!

You forgot the onions
I wonder if you could shred a potato and cook it with the flour and egg mix and it be similar. I bet it would taste like a hash brown, lol idk

@@bluem.9530 the inside is similar to mashed potatoes just that it holds together. After 3 minutes or so on each side it’s safe to eat.
There are lots of different flours. Which are usable? Preferable?
I use all purpose flour.
You didn't mention the heat setting and the time range to flip.
Lifting many times to guess if brown will possibly break up the pattie
Yes!!!! I wondered the same thing. Please talk about heat, oils used and timing. Not everyone knows this.
It’s in the description, medium- and just watch the sides for color
☺
The basic recipe seemed a bit off, but I followed it anyway. It seemed like it was a lot of flour, and it was. All we tasted was the raw flour. Any ideas?

I think I missed how long you should cook them
Cook them a couple of minutes on each side. The recipe is in the description box below.
Why not get a longer handled spatula so you don’t burn yourself
