MUSIC!! "U Make Me Feel" by MK2
One thing that I found so interesting was the audience reaction during the old people sex scenes; people were more horrified by disgust they felt at old people sex than they were by the kills. It perfectly drives home the messages around age and desirability that the movie was trying to get across.
To be fair, we're not biologically wired to sexually desire people past reproductive age because it makes zero sense human evolution-wise to waste energy & "resources" on people who are unable to create offspring.
Oh totally
237 likes. I’m not changing that.
Personally for me I get uncomfortable for any sex scene and like- the old couple sexually assaulted people and murdered all of Maxine’s friends
so yeah I’m gonna be disgusted when they randomly start having sex especially because Maxine is under the bed
I kind of assumed it would be the same if it was a couple of younger murderers. Like how embarrassing must that feel to know they are above you. Confusing thoughts from that can barely even register when you have to be terrified that they will find out you are there and murder you.
"Get in that barn and start fuckin' we're losin' daylight" got me ROLLING
tujno
2 years from now when they possibly play the out of context game again, this quote should be included
me too!
I think this is the first horror movie that could’ve been solved by giving the villain a vibrator.
Grace and Frankie's market. In that show they develop vibrators for elder women who have arthritis and carpal issues.
😂😂😂
defeats the point of the movie though, but lmfao
Idk if you give one to pinhead from hellraiser that has spikes it could also work
I wanted to like ur comment but also didn't want to change the number it's at lol (if that number changes, for future readers it's 666 as of writing this comment)
I responded the way Chelsea did the very first time I saw X . I connected immediately. My reasons may be different. I’m 65, and what hit me was the aging theme. There was a sadness to it in terms of how our bodies fail us with old age, how we are not what we were at one time in our life. I absolutely loved it, and can’t wait for Pearl to see what kind of messed stuff she’s into in her young age!
Thank you James and Chelsea! I’ve been waiting for this one!
I saw this comment about X that said something like “Ti West saw his Grandparents having sex and made a whole movie to exorcise that demon.” I think it was the perfect review.
Dude, you resurrected a memory I was trying to forget 🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
@@gracehaven5459 Lol, sorry
*Spoilers*
I actually really like Wayne’s death scene because you see the initial kill, which is the close-up of the pitchfork penetrating the eyes, and then we cut to a normal scene and then an abrupt cut to the pitch fork pulling out and the viscera and I’ve seen this film several times and it always gets me. So unsettling. Also, Wayne could easily be a sleazy porn producer but he supports Lorraine’s decision to be in the film based on who she is and what she wants which is pretty new compared to cookie cutter characters like him in past films.
I'm pretty sure he says to RJ "none of them are nice girls." He also left his wife to be with a younger woman, who's also his employee, addicted to cocaine, fleeing a troubled home, and latching on to him in a desperate hope he'll bring her to fame.
The movie plays it all on a pretty light tone. He seems oblivious to Maxine's problems, rather than actively exploiting them, etc. I would still characterize him as a sleezebag, but I think the movie's accepting this as a hedonistic response to aging and insecurity.
Speaking of foreshadowing, Howard and Pearl's deaths were both foreshadowed as well. Howard having a heart attack after saying his heart couldn't take it, and when Howard is looking for Pearl he tells Jackson he is worried about her falling and breaking her hip which both happened. Great episode of the podcast! Only movie I have watched twice in theaters!
also wayne says to lorraine "you don't want to give the poor old man a heart attack"
such a good movie
Death foreshadowing I noticed on 2nd viewing: Wayne says to Lorraine, "I don't want to give the old cadre a heart attack - would you?" When Howard is dragging Lorraine into the house her death rattle (post-death rattle?) triggers his heart attack.
That alligator stalking shot was masterfully suspensful. Also, nice Chucky socks James
Mia Goth was an absolute standout in this film for being able to play both roles so convincingly! It was strange because you could feel the awkwardness in the theater with the sex scenes, especially the one at the end.
But I kind of appreciated that it never felt like it was graphic, just to be graphic. There was a narrative reason for there to be sex and it never felt exploitative. Some might disagree, but that’s just my personal opinion.
revisiting this after watching Pearl and was able to determine that the 60th anniversary announcement on the radio in X is for a state dancing audition to tour the state that Saturday.
Ah I didn't catch that I assumed it was like the anniversary of the end of world War I
i actually cried for pearl during that scene when she's dolled up for her husband and he tells her he can't and then her taking off the makeup in the mirror and stuff. that was so sad, its like I knew she was not the "good guy" in the movie but that hit so close to my feels.
That's so sad :'(
Honestly the themes about age and whenever they have that earnest conversation about being young and free, or the old couple talk about their relationship, definitely made me emotional. Ive been really scared about ageing recently, though ik im young, but ive spent years isolating myself and not really enjoying myself. So that idea of being trapped and not able to do the things you want and live life freely is definitely something anyone can sympathise with
@@GuineaPigEveryday I’ve been trying to live my life the way I wanted to as of late and it’s freeing, even if it’s just doing a drawing everyday and learning to dance.
It does
@@GuineaPigEveryday I watched the movie tonight and I felt the same. I just finished my skincare routine and I looked at my products and then thought back to the scene. I also spent most of my childhood confined to my home, not going out and doing as much stuff as others my age have done. It dawned on me that I'm past my mid-twenties and that my youth is slowly leaving me, the only era where I have the energy and the strength to do whatever I want. This fear is real, of having that window close on you, and you never enjoyed the chance to go all out at least once. I sympathised a lot with Pearl. She was so heartbroken, dejectedly removing that meagre makeup she kept for years and removing the only pretty dress she had left. This movie is sad man.
A24 is seriously on a roll this year already. Between X and Everything, Everywhere they've already got two of best 2022 releases imo
they were on a roll until Men came out... but Bodies Bodies Bodies seems promising. along with Pearl of course.
@@slaterism2762 whilst Men wasn’t my favourite of theirs this year i still enjoyed it. but i get it’s definitely an acquired taste for sure!
definitely keen for pearl & i’ve just bought tickets to a pre screening of bodies bodies bodies, hoping that one is good too!
I usually have trouble seeing the deeper meaning in movies. That is why I enjoy podcasts and reviews like this. It helps me to understand the movie beyond the surface level.
I really enjoy hearing an opinion on films I love by people so different from me using a totally different life context to see the film by too.
Just from the clips in this review, I kind of got the idea that the characters' kindness to the old folks was actually raising the tensions, since it seemed like their demeanor was unnecessarily delicate in such a way that would make Howard and Pearl feel deeply condescended to. Each time the clips played of the characters being "likable and nice" to the elders, it actually was really easy to imagine them getting really annoyed and hurt by those interactions because they were being reminded of how old the film crew saw them as. Not necessarily in a way to make the young folks unsympathetic, but it's really easy to see how their attempts to help could have sent a painful message.
agree to thissss, I know some old peeps who dw be 'assisted' a lot bc they say it makes them feel like their age 😢
It's funny how in the beginning, Howard made a point to say that his shotgun wasn't loaded so I had the smallest belief that Jackson was going to survive.
The fact that James and Chelsea didn't know that Pearl was Mia Goth says quite a bit about the quality of the makeup.
I do think that this film's kill structure is a deliberate inversion of the old slasher cliché about sex being a death sentence, given that the one character who does not have sex and has the least open attitude toward sex, RJ, is the first to die, whereas Maxine, arguably the most sexual character, is the one to survive.
Also an interesting note is that despite Howard being worried that his heart condition won't let him have sex, he is able to, and what does trigger his heart attack is a direct result of one of his murders, an action born out of a resentment towards others' sexuality. Just more fuel for how this movie's framing is very sex-positive.
Old people back then looked EXTRA rough because they substituted a food group with cigaretts.
Lol, truth
Also, the lead, coal, and war 😂
This movie felt like a love note to slashers and like it was poking fun at "elevated horror" at the same time. So good.
Lorraine's foreshadowed death to me was her role as sound operator holding the " boom" mic where she literally gets killed with the a shotgun aka " boomstick." That's the only thing I can think of.
i was thinking the nail biting foreshadowed her hand getting smashed
Jenna Ortega is really good at doing the ugly cry/scream. I have no trouble believing that she would make that face in a real terrifying scenario.
X is so damn good. I actually find the characters extremely fun to watch and even like pretty much all of them, at least for most of the movie. And the gore is brutal as hell. Very good movie.
I was devastated when Bobby Lynn bit the dust 😔
It was a terrible movie
@@rayjones658 to you maybe 🤭
X was so masterful with its characterizations of Pearl and Howard. I found myself moved to tears at the moment when Pearl is like, "I'm not as beautiful as I once was" and Howard's reply of "Always". Another moment was Pearl's cries of "He's having a heart attack". I know she's one of the villains, maybe I'm hyper empathetic, but I could just sit here and list all the ways I felt for her and Howard. I'm truly excited for "Pearl" and the further characterizations we will get with that, since they were so fleshed out here already. Maybe we only got sketches here and "Pearl" will be a Renaissance painting for them.
(Spoilers) i guess a foreshadow for lorraine was her being so quiet in the beginning and when she began to scream and get loud towards the end got her killed.
they called her church mouse, which is a nickname implying how quiet she is haha, so this foreshadow makes even more sense. nice catch!
This movie felt like a standout horror story dialing up the retro vibe, delivering up some top-notch gore. On top of that, there are a lot of uncomfortable scenes. There are some scenes that are so over the top with the elderly they’re comedic, but nonetheless I thought this movie was ok.
I was left a little disappointed with this whole movie. Ending was very underwhelming. The Gore and suspense was great though
Tbh it was one of the worst horror movie i ever saw
It felt like what every single remake of classic slasher try to be but fail by carbon cobying the original.. I would not be mad if this was a Texas chainsaw remake (just throw a chainsaw in there somewhere)
@@Bielorussepursang then you haven't seen many horror movies
@@Bielorussepursang that’s a stretch 💀
i thought the accident at the start of the movie foreshadowed RJ's death (i think that's the name of the film nerd), because the truck that crahsed the cow has it's light covered in blood which could reference how pearl covers the van's light when killing him. I don't know though ♡
Would Jenna Ortega being the boom pole operator foreshadow her death? Since she dies by a shotgun? She was using a shotgun microphone to record the scenes.
That's hilarious and brilliant
Chelsea got that bomber jacket she wanted from PA: next of kin!! It looks amazing :D
I was wondering why it looked so familiar!
I thought it was just me who noticed omg 😂
it didn't recognize it. it looks pretty fire
*i didn't recognize it
I was just watching the podcast episode where she talks about wanting one, so I recognized it immediately. She points it out right at the end as well though 🤗
“we’re doing a live cut!”
*camera flashes between shots rapidly*
lmao
Loved that
A contest I didn’t know I needed: Horniest Horror Villain…that has to be at least a special mention at the next Dead Meat Awards
Chelsea: Expectations were high
James: Xpectations were high
Chelsea: *completely ignored the pun*
Also who else went into the video waiting for them to talk about Zoran's tweet?
also at the end "no you're not sweaty, you're chelsea" lmfaoo
Chelsea is to enlightened to enjoy puns.
@@eddiebranden1 and yet she was babyface in they talk (or perhaps she overdosed on puns and is now in pun rehab?)
Jenna Ortega scream is an arguable top 3 scream in a horror picture ever. Good lord it was AMAZING
it really is
Brittany Snow asking, "What's your American Dream?" Soooo perfect.
1:01:40
Chelsea talking about 'how aging affects women who were famous for their beauty' reminded me of the New Batman Adventures episode featuring Calendar Girl who targets a bunch of events, only to learn she was a model who aged out and despite having so much surgery to retain her youth, she felt like it was never enough.
I’lljj Iuo
Thought it was cool how Howard said earlier in the movie that he was looking for his wife because he was scared she'd fall and break a hip.
She totally broke a hip when she fell down from the shotguns blowback.
I like the foreshadowing when Britney Snow’s character comes out of the door with an alligator and woman on it.
Chelsea’s Kill Count was fucking awesome!!
Can't wait to see her Kill Count on American Psycho 2, I wanna see how she acts when covering a very bad movie.
The only problem is when she shouldve said lets get to the numbers in the end she said lets get to the kills instead
@Ciguaphyria X its absolutely OUTRAGEOUS
@Ciguaphyria X The to the numbers is SACRED
Whats left of Jenna Ortegas face does a jump scare is what gives Howard the heart attack.
“We’re cutting this live!” *every single camera angle*
You two talking about how existential this movie made you feel made me start to feel the same... Good stuff!
X was amazing! It’s honestly up there for me with Malignant and Last Night in Soho as one/some the best recent horror movies that have came out in recent years
I think it’s better than both, and those are good
James with the grampa leg cross with the Chuckie socks is top tier 😂😂
I'd be really interested in a comparative analysis of X and It Follows. They take very different approaches to the sex/death dichotomy. Plus X's daylight motif is an interesting foil for the water motif in It Follows.
I absolitely adored X, this was a fantastic theatre experience
This movie was just so much fun. The cast was phenomenal. Jenna Ortega is the IT girl of Horror right now. Her career is on such a meteoric rise. It’s skyrocketing. I adore her.
the amount of stuff in this movie that link with pearl is astonishing and makes the movie so much better
I feel stupid now 🤦🏽♂️ didn’t even realize Mia goth played the old lady 😒 totally makes this movie so much better for me !
I didn't realize it either when I watched it. She's not American either - so pretty impressive performance I'd say
i feel so bad for the protagonists, most of them are just nice people
The only guy who sucks is the camera guy.
@@Matter-Dark True, although I loved his scenes talking about how porn could be cinema. Which I think is a worthwhile convo to have period.
@@Matter-Dark Why'd he suck? He was my favorite character.
@@StevieMcKenna10 fair enough with not telling her but she looked pretty comfortable quick enough...
Dang. Jenna Ortega is on a roll with horror movies. She had a horror movie per month with scream, studio 666, then X.
Chelsea’s Classic Rock Couture jacket is giving me LIFE. I love the Dolly jacket. Chef’s kiss.
Also I’m so glad that you loved Brittany Snow and Kid Cudi in this. They stole this movie for me, I couldn’t take me eyes off them in every scene they were in, and I don’t think people mention that enough.
The alligator scene is one of my favorite scenes of... probably not all-time... but it's the best thing I've seen in a long while. It was insanely intense and I absolutely loved it.
When I watched X for the first time, I assumed the Sunday underwear was a reference to the scene in When Harry Met Sally, where Sally is talking about a friend of hers that wore those weekly underwear. In the story, the friend's boyfriend accused her of cheating because her Sunday underwears were always missing from her drawer, but she protested that it was because the company didn't make Sunday underwear "because it was the Lord's day."
Mia Goths performance as Maxine reminded me alot of Charlize Therons performance of Aileen Wuornos in Monster. My prediction for the third film will follow Maxine as an old person (65? Which isn't really even that old?) in the present day finally facing her fear of aging and fleeting beauty.
I thought it was really cool that throughout the movie, whenever one of the younger people try to help Pearl or Howard they usually note their age. Jackson says "alright there old timer" and Peal gets compared to the grandmother. I think that's a big part of what makes them angry.
Easily one of the best horror movies I have seen in recent years. It was sad and horrifying, funny and sexy. There was so much in this movie that elevated it to masterpiece status. I can't wait for Pearl!
Oui Oui Marie is such a perfect choice for this movie and the character of Pearl. Not only is it an era appropriate wartime song, but it's about a WW1 soldier who falls in love with a young frisky dancer, much like young Howard and Pearl.
I was shocked that when Pearl says he’s having a heart attack and is clearly heartbroken and terrified I felt SO bad for her and that suprised me.
Pearl and Howard are firmly cemented themselves as two of my favorite horror antagonists in recent years. Their motives are so understandable, as horrible as their actions are. The scene where Pearl dolls herself up and tries to convince Howard to sleep with her and when he heartbreakingly turns her down and goes off to remove the makeup, my heart broke for her.
I’m rewatching this for the Xth time because it’s one of the best eps, in my opinion, and had a possible revelation that I needed to get out of my head: when Chelsea mentions Maxine saying how she doesn’t like how people here stare? I wonder if that’s older folk who were alive when Pearl was young and looked identical to Maxine, and they see Maxine and kind of do a double take. No idea if that’s what they intended and I haven’t seen the movie in a year but I had to get that thought out. You guys rule!
I was thinking at first that maybe Maxine and Pearl were the same person and that the old man was Wayne and there was some time trickery going on, because the young photo of Pearl looked enough to me like Mia Goth, they both were wearing the same shade of blue eyeshadow for a bit, pearl clearly related to her in some creepy way and I just am always a fan of time trickery "Oho! Twas you the whole time! You're never leaving this farm! Look your future in the face!" But that thesis still came across full force without it being literal.
This podcast was so fun I didn’t intend to watch X again but I stopped this video to rewatch it and I noticed another death foreshadowing:
Wayne says to Lorraine near the beginning “I don’t wanna give the ol codger a heart attack, do you?” And after Lorraine is being dragged inside the house by Howard she does, in fact, give him a heart attack.
Can't wait for this to be released physically in the UK to check it out again.
Really enjoyed it and haven't stopped thinking about it since😄
Just watch it online it's free and in good quality
1:08:46 Wayne sees movement behind the three holes in the barn, that’s why he looks out. It’s pretty subtle, and I had to rewind to figure out what he was seeing.
I was so looking forward to you covering this movie and loved this episode. I think it’s the best slasher since Scream. Something that I loved the most about it is how the scene transitions would cut in and out and in and out and in and out of the beginning of the next scene and the ending of the current scene. This movie’s editing literally fucks! It rules! This movie rules!
i love also the correlation of the cow being run over in the beginning, the blood and guts being on the tire as they drive by, and then a the end when Maxine runs over Pearl's head, pretty cool i loved it!
Me and my girlfriend saw this movie at the theater but halfway threw she fell asleep and she still doesn't believe me when I say the old people are killing because they couldn't get there freak on🤣
To me, X is one of the best slashers in over a decade. It is a gorgeous film, and I saw it twice in the theaters (including once with my mom, haha- don't judge but she's a big time horror fan of old 1970's and 80's classics so I wanted her to experience just how much Ti West captured the essence via costume design, score/soundtrack, cinematography, and editing). Also, I don't find X to be bleak considering how much I enjoy the characters/ and there's a lot of warmth despite the raw and very human themes (Wayne in his speedo-tight underwear giving advice walkin' around lmaooo)
i dont think anyone would judge that. I kinda wish i saw this in the theatre, it has great visuals for it, especially that shot on film look. I've been to a theatre where they used film stock for pre-2000s movies rather than the digital version, and its always great to see the colours of it. Also as someone who's painstakingly watched every Friday the 13th movie I love that they captured the essence of so many different slashers and horror flicks of that era. Someone always has to be skinnydipping in a disgusting lake lol
Damn, those are some stylish socks James is rocking.
One thing I absolutely love is the title and how it has so many different meanings. It refers to an X rating and the X factor Maxine (and Pearl) claim she has, but my favourite reading of it is that it’s like an X crossing, where two lines meet, since it’s the movie where Pearl and Maxine’s stories intersect. I just think that’s absolutely genius, knowing that this is a trilogy and that X takes place in the middle.
It’s also another reason why I’m so frustrated that TikTok picked up only Pearl and not X. I hate to sound like the pretentious film nerd, but this series has not been getting nearly enough recognition for how smartly they’re connected together. I’ve had so many friends be surprised when I told them Pearl was a prequel and it just really frustrates me
I was so hoping you'd do this movie! I loved it, probably my favourite horror movie in the last 5 years.
Sometimes I watch these and am shocked about all the stuff I missed while watching the movie. Like I knew why Pearl was killing but didn’t understand that that guy was supposed to be a sex slave and that’s what they were trying to keep Jenna Ortegas character for. For some reason at first I actually had thought it was R.J. which makes no sense 😂. Glad I watch these cause it really makes me think beyond surface more
Yo, Howard's actor, Stephen Ure, was Grishnakh in The Two Towers AKA the "What about their legs? They don't need those" orc.
WOAH! That's awesome lol
I need more of these live editing rapid cuts. The G Man behind the camera knows what's up.
Yea I thought this felt really good and organic
I am so glad that I finally watched this last night, and avoided all spoilers before seeing it. I got to watch the podcast for it today, and the Kill Count for it comes out today. I absolutely love this freakin movie. The only thing that I was initially confused about, was the couples motivation. At first, because of all the haunting airy female singing through the film, I thought there was going to be some kind of body swap/witchcraft type thing going on. Then realizing, no, Pearl is just a jealous, psychotic sex fiend and her husband would do anything to make her happy, completely reframes the movie. Also, I wonder if RJ's kill was foretold when he said about "giving the film a sense of Avant Garde(sp) to make up for the low budget. The scene with pearl dancing in front of the red light, is kind of artsy like that.
I enjoyed it thoroughly, haven’t seen a good slasher in cinema in years
This movie was amazing. Like Chelsea, TCM is one of my all time favorite movies and I found a lot of it in X without being a copy of it either. I LOVED the characters, who were all interesting and well written. And what a breath of fresh air to see sexuality being treated this way, with characters not being punished for their sexuality and being good people in general. I'm an asexual, but I love seeing sexuality being treated with open mind, especially in a horror movie, and this movie was just perfect for that.
Amazing podcast as always
I legit had no idea Pearl was also played by Mia Goth until I saw the credits. My jaw completely dropped because that make up was legit. It’s like on the same level as Rick Baker in my opinion
When I first saw this movie I immediately connected to it, and same with Pearl. I think the way that both characters are framed in the movies lends them both humanity and realism while making them enigmatic and true stars of the show. I can’t wait to see what they do with Maxxxine, and if I’m being honest I’d also love to see a movie that fleshes out Howard’s character- why he stayed with Pearl and what happened between his return from WWI, WWII, and the events of X.
I never dropped so many “BOW HELLO’s “ in the theater aloud so many times
12:43 Owen was in Super Dark Times and I got so excited when I saw him in this movie!
He was my favorite character in the movie. Wish he lasted longer.
Great podcasat, I always love watching dicuss random topics in the foreground while I have this on in the bacground.
According to a documentary, Wes Craven worked on Deep Throat as an editor or writer, something like that. His actual participation is undisclosed.
if anyone dares complain about chelsea, they can go through me. i love chelsea so much. i want her to do more kill counts and host more things (but only if she's able and willing)
Calm down
gasp! how dare i! i apologize for having feelings and using exaggeration to express them! i am so sorry you had to see me express An Emotion in a forum where emotions are commonly expressed!
Holy shit RJ the cam opp was played by the lead from “Super Dark Times” guy looks like a whole new person compared to 5 years 😭
i love the live setting of the podcast as well. i won't stop commenting about this movie and Dead Meat
i just watched X and two things i noticed (TW):
-The van they travel in has 'Plowing Service' on the side... cause they're gonna be doing some plowing (hehe)
-Regarding RJs scene in the shower, i might be reading too much into it, but it's very reminiscent of the emotional breakdown showers that pop up in movies specifically when a woman is dealing with trauma specifically sexual trauma. It's one of the main uses of shower scenes (i have a theory that bath/shower scenes typically fall into one of four categories: Sex, Trauma, Death, Birth), the shot of the female character crying in the shower (sometimes paired with the poignant haircut). With that interpretation, it's almost like RJ is reacting as though Lorraine being in the film is a violation to him.
A24 just knows what they are doing... 👏
The Robert Palmer song was Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor Doctor)
This movie is the best way to fight porn addiction
My issue with RJ was that he wasn’t honest about his feelings with Lorraine and Lorraine was naive if she thought RJ wouldn’t be upset.
I think tht like the reason for making these characters so sweet to the old couple is to represent how easily triggered elderly ppl are and younger ppl being nice and charitable comes across as condescending to elderly ppl which may represent Bobbie-Lynn’s death
i saw this in the theater. it's really really good! thanks for covering it
1:08:00 this was basically Joaquin (Joker) in the bathroom after his first kill
😂😂
I think they kind of foreshadow RJ's death at the begining of the movie, when they drive by a car that has run into a cow and is covered in blood. Something about the bloody headlights seems to call back to that.
“I guess Pearl goes both ways” idk why that made me laugh so hard!
"You better get in that barn and start fuckin we're losin daylight" might be the best line of this whole episode 😂
One of your best episodes in a while, made me appreciate the film even more and was smart/thoughtful as an analysis. Noticed so many things I didn’t even on second viewing
Such a ridiculously brilliant film
I know you mentioned Howard dragging Lorraine into the house mirrored Texas Chainsaw because it played on the home intruder aspect, but I saw her whole death as an homage with the incredibly violent and abrupt death happening as soon as the character crossed the threshold of the doorway just like Kirk’s death
Finally got around to watching this movie. Thought i was going to get a campy throwback, all i got was existential dread about my artistic ambitions failing and becoming a shell of my former self. Once again, A24 delivers.
