  • After the draft, I decided to take a deep dive into Nielsen's system in New Orleans and how our players would fit into it. Here is my explanation and what Atlanta will have to do to make it work.

Really like the film breakdown. The only thing I would say is that this wasn't Ryan Nielsen's scheme in N.O., it was Dennis Allen's, who also called the defensive plays. Nielsen was the defensive line coach. Of course, Nielsen will have been heavily influenced by his time in the swamp, but I'm sure the dude will bring his own scheme to Atlanta. Again, though... nice video. I liked it a lot.

Good point. I figure there will be a transition period for sure. I think the looks/alignments pre-snap will be the same as NO….but whether he decides to go full on with certain coverages (man vs zone) that’s up to what he feels his personnel does best.
He did say however we’d be doing light boxes. So look at more 2-high, Cover 2 looks.

He was co-defensive coordinator last year for the Aints too

Everything will be based on what he likes from the players we have, it’s going to be predicated on getting Grady and Onyemata single teams because they are the Star players up front.
I think we will see a lot of this and some other stuff where Elliss, Andersen, Carter, Malone, etc. will be lined up all over to take blockers off Grady and Onyemata.
You let them get freed up to 1-on-1s and you’ll be forcing the QB to move to his left or right all day and have to go to the shorter passes.

Yep, I will definitely miss him. But their personnel down there fits his scheme. He will be just as successful.

Do you think this will be an easy transition from Pees scheme? What do you for see as problems they will need to correct?

They’ll be in a lot more man compared to Pees’s scheme. Especially compared to last year. Means them corners and nickels will have to get to work.
