I'm not sure I've ever seen an actor look like he's having SO MUCH FUN on screen as Al Pacino is in this movie.
@Jeremy Backman Swordfish is CRIMINALLY underrated. Travolta clearly enjoyed playing the evil arms dealer who was willing to blow up a bus full of hostages to get the job done. He was perrrrrfect for the role.
"Vanity. Definitely my favorite sin." One of the best closing scenes in any movie.
Totally behind you there 👍🏻
When the reporter's faced morphed into Pacino's was awesome
Money has never been a motivation for Keanu, so hearing he took a pay cut so they could hire Pacino isn't surprising
Everything I've read about him indicates he is a fantastic human being.
Yeah but it needs to be said because it shows that he’s better than them all.
Yeah I'm sure it wasn't in his best interest to costar in a movie beside Al Pacino. He did it because his hearts so big.
Let's be fair....pretty much any actor worth his chops... would take a pay cut to work with Pacino
Yes they cut Keanu’s payment but Al Pacino donated his payment when he heard they cut Keanu’s payment
I love the subway scene because that's how the Devil operates: he doesn't make you sin, he merely provides opportunity.
Simply *"TEMPTATION"* in a nutshell. We are only tempted by things that interest us. There for if there is the opportunity, we more then likely will succumb to it. Satan is a sneaky bastard that way. Lol.
"Never let them see you coming"
RC CRAWL, the mythology is true in the sense that it seems to accurately predict how we are biologically wired. The devil is the mythological representation of the shadow that inhabits all of us. It can’t force us to do anything, only suggest or tempt.
Sounds like youve danced with the devil before.
@@unseenufo ... By the pale moonlight? ;)
Agreed, this is Al Pacino”s top 3 performance. Honestly it is very underrated.
So what are the other two
OJ Pistorius Michael Corleone Godfather Films, and Tony Montana Scarface.
I would have to say Carlito's Way Scent of a Woman are better than Devil's Advocate. C'est la vie
OJ Pistorius Carlitos way is pretty much a lower tone version of Scarface. Scent of a woman was good.
Derek Prospero why is it corny? Al Pacino made the movie. Without him being in it, it’s a Generic horror film. You’re acting like I said it’s the greatest film of alltimes. I’m making my opinion based off Al”s Catalog
This movie should have cleaned up the Oscars. Pacino was outstanding
Not to mention our boy Keanu
Kat rabbit you are right
How can i help you Mr Lomax?? Oscars..
Lots of Oscars!

The word "Advocate" in several languages including Russian actually MEANS "lawyer" in case anyone is interested.
Ha. Very interesting 👍🏻
@@hangoutwithme346 In Russia, this film is even called "Advokat Dyavola" ("Адвокат Дьявола"), which, word for word translation, would indeed be "The Devil's Lawyer". But then can and do words "advocate" and "lawyer" even in English language either mean the same thing or just simply have a lot in common, "the devil's advocate" existence as a phrase and its meaning here notwithstanding?
Same in norwegian, advokat.
I think you Americans need to learn your own language. Advocate is synonymous with lawyer, that's literally the meaning of the title. In Italy it's called "Avvocato del Diavolo", "avvocato" means "lawyer".
"Look, dont touch... Touch, dont taste... Taste, don't swallow"
I used to have a girlfriend like that... :-/
Hahahahahahaha
That's one of the things that never made sense to me. I mean, why would an all-knowing, all-loving, almighty being create us--it's supposedly beloved "children"--with a nature not only neutral towards but actively, and often deeply, attracted to certain behaviors but then declare those behaviors off limits?
It's almost as if the, as it were, "morals" commanded by this being were really made up by leaders from the priest and noble classes to control the behaviors of the citizenry for socio-economic reasons.
Cheers 😊
Is there not a " Swallow but u can't enjoy" ? Or is that just me?
@Studio Autio poop, don't wipe. wipe don't flush. flush, don't tell your wife. tell your wife, don't spray. spray, don't turn on the vent. turn on the vent, don't close the door. close the door, don't wash your hands.
This movie really did creep me the F out when the woman's face turned demonic and Charlize's character was losing it. Pacino makes it. Love this movie- the theme is truly timeless and it's really beautifully shot. I want your job Minty! xo
Do a movie review and get yourself out there. What do you have to lose?
@Adam Gliddon LOL!
@Audrey Snow, We’d all watch you review something. Especially if you did it in a bikini
Those effects still hold up to this day. Very seamless and realistic for the time.
@@DeathBYDesign666 it truly was.
This is such a good movie, it still gives me the creeps to this day, Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves are amazing. I also loved Fallen and Seven, they were making some really good movies back in the 90’s.
Yes, they were!!!
Keanu made Pachino look like an asshole, which isn't difficult.
Yeah, but they made also terribly bad movies in the 90s, just like in the 80s, the 70s or today. Fallen, Seven and to lesser degree Devil's advocate are of course outstanding movies, but that's why they are still remembered and all the Z-grade junk has been forgotten. That's why you rembember Casablanca, the Big Sleep and the Maltese Falcon, but not all of the hundreds of film noir movies of the 40s (yeah, Casablanca is no film noir, I know but you get what i mean, good ones are remembered, junk is forgotten, if it is not as terrible as Plan 9).
I guarantee, that in 20 years people will look back and say: look at all those great movies like John Wick, The Dark Knight, Sicario, Bad times at the El Royale, Savages, Den of Thieves, Hollywood just doesn't make'em like that anymore.
👍

"Vanity...definitely my favorite sin."
Accept Jesus as your Saviour and His Father as "Our Father in Heaven." Romans 8:14
For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Satan is the Father of Lies.
@@andrewcolwell5494 question for the jackass: when has "Satan" ever lied? "God" told the two humans that if they eat the magic fruit, they'll instantly die. The "serpent" told them the truth.
Please read the scripture carefully God did not say they would die instantly but that they would surely die, which they did but only after they had recieved God's mercy and the promise of a Saviour to be born of Eve's seed. Satan lies everytime he tells a human being that their fulfillment can be found outside of God's will. This article may help you: www.compellingtruth.org/father-of-lies.html

After he sacrifices himself to save the world, he is reincarnated as John Wick

Wrong! Clearly Rufus goes back in time to rescue him. How else would he end up back in the bathroom? 😆

More like John Constantine lol
This movie has my absolute favorite monologue:
Guilt is like a bag of f**king bricks. All you have to do is set it down. And who are you carrying all those bricks around for anyway? God? Let me give you a little inside information about god. God likes to watch. He's a prankster. No, think about it. He gives man instinct. He gives you this extraordinary gift, and then what does he do? I swear, for his own amusement; his own private cosmic gag reel. He sets the rules in opposition! It's the goof of all time. Look, but don't touch. Touch, but don't taste. Taste; don't swallow. And while you're busy jumping from one foot to the other, what's he doing? He's up there, laughing his sick f**king a$$ off! He's a tight-a$$. He's a sadist. He's an absentee landlord. Worship that? Never.
Hearing Pacino didn't want to be in the film until after the rewrites. Makes me wonder if that monologue was there from the beginning or was it reading that part that convinced him to play the role
And of course, it was perfectly alright for the Devil to judge his Creator. The Devil is a liar.
@@stevensatak1592 Correct. That explanation is actually something Satan would probably say. Its a lie and Satan knows its a lie. That is not how God operates. Satan's goal is to mislead humans into not having faith in Jesus Christ so that we will be cast in the lake of fire with him and his demons when Jesus returns. He knows how it will end but just wants to drag us with him. We can be saved by calling on Jesus but he cannot and I'm sure that jealousy enrages him.
@@austinfrazier7325 absolutely. Gave me chills reading this comment.
I still can do this monologue word for word
I don't know how long it takes To make a vidéo like this, but obviously your doing great a job in a few days. Thank you minty!
My best guess: ~3 days
1 day research and gathering source material, selection of bg music, 1/2 day for the script, 1/2 filming, 1 day editing everything together, recording the audio track, synchronizing both, inserting visual overlays, and finally uploading that stuff. This means for 2 videos a week, he probably works around 5-6 days a week. He may be somewhat faster but one shouldn't underestimate the effort. And I'm also pretty sure, unlike Ed Wood, he takes more then 1 cut.
Given it's "just" a You Tube video and not a high, budget production, but if they are somewhat professionally made, there is a lot of work necessary that one just doesn't recognize by simply consuming it. All done by a single individual who has to do everything by himself. Living of "doing RUclips videos" sounds fun, but when being done as professionally as possible, that's a lot of hard work, if you are not supported by (an expensive) team.
In both Devil's Advocate and Constantine, Keanu Reeves character's beat the devil by self-sacrifice committing suicide.
And in the Matrix Revolution.. lol 😂
He didn't beat the devil. He's in a never ending cycle until he chooses his destiny.
Tank...load the "Church" program...
Gotcha, Neo, who do you want for Satan, Peter Stormare or Al Pachino?

You can just imagine how many times Pacino's "I'm a Fan of Man" speech gets searched nowadays.
I once got the part in an independent film by auditioning with Al Pacino’s monologue about God from this movie.
I still know it and it’s still one of my favorite monologues from any film!
You’d go crazy too if you moved from Gainesville Fl to NYC...

People from Florida are already crazy.
You never mentioned the naming nod of “John Milton”, who wrote “Paradise lost”,
Yeah, but that one is a bit obvious and not much to talk about. Unless there was some sort of long history behind it.
You beat me to it! Damn!
@Jacob Dean He can't cover everything. He covers everything else! :)
Actually, the Whole thing that The Devil is Lucifer who is a Fallen Angel who Rebels against God isn't in the Bible. I was told it comes from Milton's Paradise Lost. They call that Fan Fiction.
Is fan friction when somebody faps to their favourite celebrity jiggling gif?
Never let them see you coming.
I cannot tell you how many times I watched this in the 90's when it was released on cable. Pacino's climactic speech is the stuff of legends. The book was also at my high school, and I wanted to read it but someone else took it out and as far as I know, never returned it.

Vastly underrated! Keanu at his sexiest! Pacino at the top of his game!!!
Charlize Theron was also awesome.
Keanu is so sexy in this and in Speed, and I would say equally as sexy in John Wick. 🤷🏻♀️
This movie gave me the heebie jeebis when first watched it. Now I appreciate the acting, the story line, the cinematic aspect. Great movie in my opinion.
The Devil's Advocate is such a great film! And, Pacino's performance totally makes it a must see film! It's one of those films, that I don't get tired of watching even after seeing it multiple times.
Al Pacino was brilliant in The Devils Advocate. The movie is a must have in any collection.
“Underrated?” That’s such a strange thing for me to hear. I’ve seen The Devil’s Advocate more than I’ve seen the Godfather or Scarface
This was a great movie. Al Pacino is wicked as the devil.
The only better and more terrifying devil was viggo Mortensen
IDK I thought Keanu's rants at the end showed up Pachino quite well...
I thought his speech about God was convincing
I love the idea that the Devil seduces you. He doesn't just jump out in horns and scare you. He nudges. He drops hints of opinion, and let you come to his conclusion. He makes points that get you to agree, he goads you into crossing that line yourself, he didn't push, he didn't make you do anything. That subway scene is brilliant, But that 'Absentee landlord' rant/manifesto, I can imagine that he used that rant before, and took a third of the Angels of heaven with him.
See Robert Dinero in Angel Heart

Im so glad you finally took a look at this movie minty. DA it was one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time. This script and dialog is some of the best ive ever heard with so many quotes that are just awesome i really do feel like this is one of al's most underrated movies ever. I didn't really understand why this movie was good growing up i to had it on VHS but when i watched it again in my 20s i was like holy shit this is insanely good.
Connie Nielsen was very underrated in this movie.
Sexy as hell!

Sooo Happy you did this one Minty! One of my favorite Al Pacino movies ever! As a kid I tried memorizing his monologue at the end, inflections and everything. At times, I catch myself saying some of lines from this movie! Thank you for reviewing this one!
This and Fallen are two of my favorite movies from this era.
One of my top 10 movies. Love this movie!
Oh man, oh man this movie was amazing. All I can say is that opening day in Oklahoma was something else. I went too watch it with my dad & the theatre was full before the credits had finished. By the time the movie was half way over most of the people had left. When the movie had finished there were only five people left including my dad and myself.
Why would anybody want to leave that movie ?
Frank Schneider 🤷🤔
It's called the devil's advocate... What did they think it was gonna be about? Puppies and rainbows?
Oaktown Dimond Really?
When you said prequel: I can imagine Milton starting out, and maybe his first attempt to seduce and 'groom' a protige was a young Eddie Barzoon. But he just gets ground down by guilt and becomes the sad sack we see in Devil's advocate, no one special anymore, still with the firm because once the devil doesn't need you, he can't even be bothered to fire you, just moves his attention to the next attempt, Keanu. Just an idea.

Have seen this movie several times over. Mr Reeves and Charlie were a good job of being a married couple. Well done. Loved the Subway scene too.
One of my favorite movies ... gonna watch it today!
Charlize's nude scene really caught me and my then gf off-guard when we watched this via VHS in her house.
Was there one ? Seriously ? Can't remember, which means it was obviously not very impressive.
charlize theron was super sexy hot in this movie
Speaking of Brad Pitt, have you considered doing a video on the movie, "Se7en"?
this was 1 of the rare few movies that i actually went back to the movie theater and saw it twice.
This has always been one of my favorite movies. I had a desire to watch this movie again as I was listening to another video regarding what has been happening politically here in America over the past several years… What people have done to basically have sold their souls to achieve the things they wanted to… I’ve just been feeling like we are living in a similar scene as this movie😢 This was a great video, thank you🎉

This movie mixes fiction with truth. My heart started pounding when I first saw the scenes where Charlieze's character saw the women's real demonic faces. In 1982 my dear father had to have a hernia operation and in hospital he started losing his mind (maybe the anesthetic affected him and a deep depression came over him ). He was fearful of one doctor and he tried to jump out the window to get away from him. When he came home he was constantly scared and couldn't be left alone. There was 2 celebrities on Aussie TV who scared him every time they were shown, and he would say "look look at their faces - can't you see they are evil?" One was Bert Newton and the other was Tony Barber. We all would say to dad that his mind was playing tricks on him and he was suffering from depression. He would say that we should have gone to church more. We took him to a psychiatrist and after a while he seemed to get better and mum could leave him alone for short times. Well one day mum went shopping with my sister - gone only 1 hour - and when she came home found my beloved father hung in the chicken shed. He left a note saying - "no one believes me and so I will end it" . Our family had always been lukewarm catholics going to church only for funerals, weddings and baptisms, but after this traumatic and tragic event I slowly started truly believing in God and I became a fundamental christian. If I had been a christian when my father went through all that alone I could have helped him by instead of saying it was all in his head I could have reassured him by saying God would protect him and by believing him with the torment he was going through, just like Keanu's wife.
Well fuck man that's bad

I just watched this movie again the other day... Classic!
Ironically, Fallen ends with the Rolling Stones song 'Sympathy for the Devil' while the Advocate ended on 'Paint it Black'.
why is that ironic? he literally comments on the use of rolling stones songs in both movies in the video
@@TJfromEarth No, he mention "Time is on my side" The difference being those are not the same song and "Sympathy for the Devil" was the better fit for 'Devil's Advocate' and Fallen was about a Dark Angel. So it would have been a better switch around in music.

Love the part where Pacino tells that guy (in a totally different language) to go home and find his wife cheating on him.
I remember thinking that the sculpture had changed for the end as part of the creepy aesthetic, like you thought it was just a cool decor choice but it turns out there's demons/lost souls trapped inside. I had no idea there was a behind the scenes reason for it, I just though it was part of the theme of things not being as they seem. I love this movie and I'm happy so many people agree that it's underrated.

One of my favorite Keanu Reeves movies
I really enjoyed the concept of this movie, one of my favorites. The ending I think may be interpreted differently...
When Kevin kills himself, he’s actually committing a sin, therefore his soul went to hell and now belongs to the devil/Milton (as his wife’s soul since she also killed herself).
So, Kevin and his wife didn’t just “went back in time”, I think it’s actually Milton manipulating them trying to convince Kevin to join him. And he got the whole eternity to tempt Kevin over and over again.
I spoke about it with some friends after we saw it at the theater, but I think they prefer a happier ending, so no one really accepted my theory (but were unable to contest it).
Well, maybe the original ending would be better for Kevin... killing the devil and being in prison for murder might be better to live in hell...
The original ending was that he killed Milton?
just me I think it’s the ending from the book (sorry, that’s what I meant as “original”). Didn’t read the book, found out in this video

I also thought of it in that way sort of. Like he's in this reincarnation cycle where each time the devil is trying to get to him. But then again aren't we all in that similar position as far as we know.
Thank you I thought I was the only one who saw or got this. The devil even morphs foen someone and is smiling. The devil won! Suicide is a cardinal sin and devil made sure he had only two choices, join him or kill yourself and become mine anyway. And the devil has all the time in the world. But also, how many times has he lived this scenerio?
As much as I love this movie there's something unsettling about it disturbing and creepy to me as if something is underlying to the movie or maybe it's just the vibe it has. The combo of Al and Keanu and the acting is amazing. There is a timelessness to it. It was made in 1997 when I was 17. What I would give to be that age again lol

Another great video. Thank you Minty. Must have been cold in Frankston, to be rocking a jumper 😊
11:23 is that the same spot where the Ghostbusters jogging ghost was filmed? Sure looks like it.
Its a NY landmark.
Hey Minty, this was an epic video (as usual). I know you don't always have time to answer fans, but I watched your Batman Telling You To Get Lost video, and you said that you really appreciate your fans, so I thought you might like to know this... Since you do a lot of classic films that aren't full blockbusters, I show my dad the video and he remembers the film, then we make a list of them, we call them Minty Movie List. I just want you to know how much I love and appreciate what you do! *If you read this, could you heart, pin or reply to show that you did. I really want you to know this!!!*
Wow what a cool comment.💗💯
agreed

One solid freaking MASTERPIECE
Awesome video. I loved this movie when it came out. Went back and watched again, aged very well...
15:07 hadn't noticed that shadow blooper before
Saw this in the dollar theater when I was a senior in high school. Here’s why it scared the shit out of me 1. I had never seen a “horror” movie or anything close to one. I was raised religious and it wasn’t allowed in our house at all. 2. I had skipped school to go see it so I was already a little nervous and knowing I was up to no good lol. 3. Between the theater being empty, the religious imagery, the devil basically cursing God in that monologue, and the scene where the entire city was empty (not to mention the demon faces) by the time it ended I was sure I had missed the rapture. I might be the only person that was horrified by the movie and haven’t seen it again since 😂
I was only 5 years old when I started watching horror movies in 1985. Please don't judge me but I loved enjoying watching Elviras big knockers, when she was the hostess. The 80's was the bronze age of horror movies. Devils Advocate is a big must watch that I very highly recommend watching it including the hardcore religious people. Just make sure you have a crucifix on your hand or rosary or like me the hellraiser cube cause it is going to be a wild ride to the unknown.

Minty Comedic Arts: I love your movie reviews, and this one was epic. As a hardcore fan of Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves, Davis Advocate was an instant love affair for me the day it came out. In addition, nice name drop with Jacob's Ladder. A film that I consider one of the most underrated and disrespected films ever. :-) Keep up the solid work, Mate! :-)
One of my fave Films!!! well done minty!!!!!
My favorite scene is when John Milton is telling Kevin Lomax about God and making his own cosmic gag reel!
Devil movies are always more interesting, cool and fun, he knew it!
Pacino's speech at the end is great!!
Minty needs 1 million + subscribers!! Wait!! No!! He needs his own TV program....
Love your content minty. All the way from the U.S./West Coast. Yes!! As soon as we saw this movie I knew it was an instant classic!!!
@@automaticninjaassaultcat3703 TV program is a domain ending on tv, eg like www.twitch.tv
It's named after a country called television, being located on a Bond-villain like volcanic island called Tuvalu in the Pacific Ocean and reigned supreme over by a guy called Ted Turner.
It has become famous for founding a religion called Netflix, of which some critiques claim it's rather a sect, draining the minds and souls of all members who follow their mandatory, sacred ritual of binge watching.
