FWIW, you can softmod the OG XBox without *ANY* game. The secret is having a computer with a long IDE cable connection. You boot up the (open) XBox to a certain point--I forget which point, as I did this more than fifteen years ago--and then unplug the IDE cable from the drive while leaving the power cable plugged in. You can then plug in the PC IDE cable to the hd and power the PC up. At that point, you can do whatever you want to the XBox hd. How does this work? The XBox hd is normally locked and unusable EXCEPT WHEN IT IS RUNNING. By leaving it powered up while switching IDE sources, it stays unlocked. (In theory, you could damage either the XBox or your PC, though I'm not sure how, as long as both are well grounded.) Cheers! (P.S. Be sure to upgrade the default 40-ping IDE cable to an 80-pin one; you'll see around a 20% increase in data rate. Seriously.)

I have a modded original Xbox sitting on the shelf from decades ago, no idea where the controller or cords got to, but we modded ours over FTP from a windows XP machine, no flash drives involved! Networking is so much harder, especially when you now have windows 11 machines and not XP.
I have a pre-formatted flash drive that came with the files to softmod an original Xbox so I didn't have to put in the files myself. Softmodding the Xbox is hands down the easiest thing I ever did.
If you don't have an xbox to usb adapter but do have a breakaway cable you can chop the end and solder a USB to it. The cables are just early USB type connections.
Yup, one 3rd party breakaway cable, one USB extension cable, some electrical tape and a little while later I had a modded xbox, and an adapter to use the controller on my PC. They're both still in one of my random cables and power adapter boxes.
@@doitallYT haha, yeah I soldered and hot glued mine. It does the job perfectly and I have used it for a few consoles. I also use splinter cell to mod them, not just handy to have but a good game to boot lol.
Memberberries. I made thousands of dollars off suckers between 2004-05 modding their XBoxes, Modchips, adding fans, lights, etc. Being in the military was great for a side hustle, word of mouth goes around quick.
My first time modding I was lazy and cheap so I did the hotswap method, it took about 3 days of trying to find the exact right method for the computer to recognize the hdd and to learn all the quirks of xplorer360 to finally get it done, and after that I just got splinter cell and a dongle, however the other reason for doing the hotswap was 3 of my 4 Xbox’s have dead dvd drives so I initially did it just so I didn’t have to take the one apart to do all the others, in the end 2 of them were hotswapped and the others were splinter celled
The best way to do it is to backup the eeprom using an rs232 cable soldered to the motherboard and extracting the hdd key to decrypt the hdd and copying the necessary files to it
Just so y'all know the reason it has to be such a small drive is because differently sized storage mediums use different formats. So the Xbox can't read formats made for higher storage devices
I guess I was one of the cooler kids, I had to softmod my Xbox with a PC and a SID5 Babylon disc. I remember the laughs whenever I'd tell people that the easiest giveaway that it's modded now is the USSR showing up on the menu 🤣
You know I never knew until later that my Xbox was modded because my dad bought it that way in 2005 while he was serving in Iraq; the console still displays most of the menu labels in Arabic. I just thought all Xbox's had a cheat codes menu, the ability to store movies, to copy a game disk to the internal memory, and emulation. We still have that Xbox but we don't have any controllers that work for it at the moment. Good times.
Careful buying flash drives online. Some aren't what they seem. The drive will show 500 GB on it and while it's plugged in but in reality it's 3 GB. Basically before it's sold, they changed the display settings in the drive so it shows more than it actually is. I'm not a programmer so idk how it actually happened but you get the idea.
Was looking for this comment! Also, they could put anything on that flash drive so I would be cautious putting it in a PC or anything that you care about
There's a newer way that doesn't need a game. Endgame or Rocky5s. Not only that, the main thing you need to TSOP flash it so you can upgrade to a bigger hard drive. It's not as easy as it sounds 😢 best believe the TSOP flash is hard to do.
Tsop flashing is easy, you don't need to solder anything anymore, just use a conductive paint pen to bridge the solder points and make sure you know what tsop chip you have
I had a memory card adapter usb that did the same as that adapter from a mad catz bundle lol… I had my original Xbox modded with those first gen xcuter chips when I was in 2nd grade…
Assuming Microsoft hasn't done anything proprietary to change how FAT32 works on the first gen xbox, you shouldn't need a drive smaller than 4GB to utilize FAT32. FAT32 just won't hold a file larger than 4GB but the limited capacity of the drive itself may be larger. Up to 2TB actually. In my work I use 64-128GB flash drives constantly to boot from older machines to re-image them or even flash bios'. At least I'm guessing that's why you mentioned a flash drive smaller than 4GB because older hardware requires that format. You should be able to use diskpart within CMD/PowerShell or use a mac/mac virtual machine to format as "MS-DOS" which windows will see as FAT32. Someone give me a shout if any of this is incorrect for the first gen xbox because I love to troubleshoot and learn. I hope someone learned from this too c:

A) Checked the model? 1.0-1.6 are compatible with this mod, no checks needed😎👍 B) this one is a 1.6, good ol' gold caps! I understand they still tend to leak, though to a lesser extent than the other clock caps, so far it hasn't shown any signs of beginning to do so. I'd pull the cap if it was a 1.0-1.5, buuuut that's the problem with these ones, error code if I do 😅 soldering is unfortunately a no go to me due to visual impairments, but at some point I'll find someone with the relevant skills to swap out with new caps just to be safe 😎👍
OH! A) was for 1.6's? Or am I still off? 😂 Anyway, thank you for the sub! I want my systems to last for years to come, can't do that if they're drenched in acid! Stay tuned, I'll be sure to have more cool content on the way 😁👍

Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Heres an idea that 'might' help your FTP needs, I had to use this method for a while; get a WiFi extender that you can keep near the Xbox (or a mesh router), the only requirement is that it has an ethernet port that you can plug the console in to. Then, hook the Xbox up to it and connect your computer to the same wireless network, then you can FTP over WiFi without needing to mess with a dozen extra cables! Sure, its not a perfect solution, but I hope that it helps you out! Alternately, you can grab a spare router that stays offline that you can hook up near the Xbox in a similar configuration to the above, but then you only plug in the power when you need to transfer files. Also not a sophisticated method, but it'll work in a pinch!
@@doitallYT Yeah both of those are valid points I didn't think about a spare router but that would be a good way to do it cuz if you already have all the stuff on the laptop you can just set them near each other and let them do their thing over FTP I'll probably try that sometime when I have a little down Because I have no lack of spare routers laying around I do i t support for a living and I'm constantly buying random cables and spare routers just because I never know them for something And I'm also one of those people who keeps at least one ethernet cord in my laptop bag and never no one's going to end up going to visit family or friend and have to troubleshoot something if you know what I mean Thank you for this idea sorry I should have thought of it sooner and didn't Thank you for your content sir and I hope you're having a good day God bless you and your family God bless you Jeremy Scruggs

If you have trouble tracking down an original Xbox controller, consider ordering an OGXbox360 adapter so you can use 360 controllers on it 😁👍 That's my game plan, the controllers have gotten pretty dang expensive for authentic ones, to the point where it makes more sense to order the adapter for my authentic 360 controllers 😅
@@doitallYT yeah not wrong, did that adapter work for wired controllers too? I've got one for the pc so was thinking could use that. The ones I saw in fb market place (bundle) look decent but then the console itself isn't great lol.
I believe so? You would have to double check that though, I'm not totally sure 🤔 and remember: The outside of the console is cosmetic, the internals are what really matter 😎👍 a bit of alcohol can go a long way!
well that process actually takes a few dozen minutes plus most OG microshit consoles have either clock capacitor damage(like my attempt at an "executor" modchip install on a v1.6 motherboard) or drive failures(requires a modchip or a tsop key dump to lock a new drive using ATA commands) or is just too crappy in cooling with the older versions of motherboard but still that is basically how an OG softmod works as I actually saw a kid do it to an RTF console about a decade ago using a memory card he had the exploit loaded via a USB reader and a disc that had some exploit data burned on it
There's an even easier mod out now, one that doesn't require a game! Check out my video on it if you want to learn more:

Just came across darknet diaries podcast, and an episode about og xbox underground. So cool. Had to see it.
I remember scrounging my friends list on 360 for infected cod lobbies lol, not knowing what jtag meant but that i needed to get all the gun camos
Omg OG Xbox and splinter cell? My freakin childhood man
I remember doing this stuff when mw2 was popping. Unlocked everything for free, got myself every achievement in all the games I played. Modded my custom classes and even could change my name to whatever I wanted plus I could have the A B X Y buttons in my name with the color and all.
Oh man modded lobbies was my shiiitt! Like seriously if you hosted modded lobbies you were the COOLEST kid around

I have a modded original Xbox sitting on the shelf from decades ago, no idea where the controller or cords got to, but we modded ours over FTP from a windows XP machine, no flash drives involved! Networking is so much harder, especially when you now have windows 11 machines and not XP.
Insignia is a really cool concept bringing back Live server support if you havent heard.
Oh those where the days. Of my childhood
I have a pre-formatted flash drive that came with the files to softmod an original Xbox so I didn't have to put in the files myself. Softmodding the Xbox is hands down the easiest thing I ever did.
I still own a modded one with 125mb ram. but with a xecuter mod Chip. really rare. Im happy to have it
Ahhhh one my first softmods ❤
I have one running snes,n64,Sega and nes. Can also boot the original OS as well!
If you don't have an xbox to usb adapter but do have a breakaway cable you can chop the end and solder a USB to it. The cables are just early USB type connections.
Haaaa... I used scissors and a roll of electrical tape to do something similar back when I was 12ish, sure got the job done for my first softmod! 🤣
@@geekehUK lol yeah man a nice and easy mod with a fun craft project making the cabel. Mines kicking about somewhere still.
Memberberries. I made thousands of dollars off suckers between 2004-05 modding their XBoxes, Modchips, adding fans, lights, etc. Being in the military was great for a side hustle, word of mouth goes around quick.
I NEED ONE OF THESE bro i had one when i was younger and it would be so nostaglgic
Its crazy now you can just load the memory card and it just sends a payload. Which is amazing because all these drives are breaking
Exactly! Huge relief when working parts are getting harder to come by, saves a great system from the trash heap 😎👍
Wish I had one lol my brother's old one was so cool with like a billion games
I guess I was one of the cooler kids, I had to softmod my Xbox with a PC and a SID5 Babylon disc.
I remember the laughs whenever I'd tell people that the easiest giveaway that it's modded now is the USSR showing up on the menu 🤣
and here is me with it all on a xbox memory card from years ago when i did this, must have been 15+ years now.
I love that he bought a 3 dollar USB drive on ebay
And trusted it to not be a kill chip 🥴😂
You know I never knew until later that my Xbox was modded because my dad bought it that way in 2005 while he was serving in Iraq; the console still displays most of the menu labels in Arabic. I just thought all Xbox's had a cheat codes menu, the ability to store movies, to copy a game disk to the internal memory, and emulation. We still have that Xbox but we don't have any controllers that work for it at the moment. Good times.
I wonder if I can put the box one system in the original xbox case
if you have the one s then it is possible, I've done it but cannot fit orginal xbox one there...
Also, they could put anything on that flash drive so I would be cautious putting it in a PC or anything that you care about
My older brother molded a special eye in my ps2 that would play games that were burned on to disks... I had legit every game you could think of lol
Damn this made me realize how much i played mech assault back in the day 😅
still got my gecko kit from the 360 lol best thing I've ever learned back in the day
Be careful with deals on storage drives. Some of them have a fake capacity and will actually start deleting data if you exceed the real capacity.
Nice video new sub 👍
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the sub 😁👍
Kids will never understand the greatness of splinter cell😂 im 34 and that just brought back soooo many memories
There's a newer way that doesn't need a game. Endgame or Rocky5s. Not only that, the main thing you need to TSOP flash it so you can upgrade to a bigger hard drive. It's not as easy as it sounds 😢 best believe the TSOP flash is hard to do.
Check out some of my latest videos! ENDGAME is AWESOME! And there's even a way to do larger HDD's on a softmod now, it's WILD!
Always wanted one also......maybe one day.....make a part 2 with the HDD install

(In theory, you could damage either the XBox or your PC, though I'm not sure how, as long as both are well grounded.)
Cheers!
(P.S. Be sure to upgrade the default 40-ping IDE cable to an 80-pin one; you'll see around a 20% increase in data rate. Seriously.)
Those cables are super easy to diy. They're straight up usb 2.0 I think. I hard soldered usb ports in ports 3 and 4.
Yeah I had a broken controller so just soldered a usb port to the memory card pins it was super easy and it was nice to not have the controller go to waste
I wish I still had my copy of Mech Assault. I never did get around to modding my 360.
I still have my Xbox modded. I can play burned games that I would charge $20 to burn for others if their Xbox was modded too. I can also save & install on my Hard Drive hence later it became a feature for Xbox 360
Did you check the clock battery first?
Right
Nice! God I loved my Franken-box. It had wires hanging out. Parts from a PC. I added USB ports, well normal size USB for the time. Mod chip.
I hope to you A: checked the model to make sure it’s safe or B: replaced the caps before doing that
A) Checked the model? 1.0-1.6 are compatible with this mod, no checks needed😎👍
B) this one is a 1.6, good ol' gold caps!
@@doitallYT With your A, not what I meant but you hit the hammer on the head with B. Glad to see you are thorough. Subscribing now 👍
OH! A) was for 1.6's? Or am I still off? 😂 Anyway, thank you for the sub! I want my systems to last for years to come, can't do that if they're drenched in acid! Stay tuned, I'll be sure to have more cool content on the way 😁👍

OMG THE SPINTER CELL JUST UNLOCKED A CORE MEMORY FROM WHEN IT WAS LIKE 2007 AND MY OLD BROTHER MODDED OUR XBOX
Fun story my brother got banned from xbox live because he was aim botting on Halo 2. It was about 3 games or 20 minutes before they banned him. Rip Gamechamp365
Remember you can just set up a modern cheap 32 gig drive and spoof it as a 4gb so it still works, just in case you cannot find an even smaller drive
I tried that but none of the software could format the drive to xbox compatible.
Tried 2 different software and even if my xbox could format it. No go.
It would report the size correctly but error with "physical device memory too large"
@@FirestormDDash you have to spoof it in the drive firmware, not just partitioning it
@@composters ah. I assumed something like that was an option but googling seemed to not show any results on how to do that so beyond my level of tech know how.
Cool to seeing somebody doing it this way I softmodded mine years ago and I have USB cord I just never have tried the USB method because I don't have a need for it but I've still got my copy of splinter cell and pro action replay memory card with be exported save on it
At this point I'm investigating how to upgrade the laser lens in my DVD drive on my Xbox
I know I can FTP stuff over to the console and I get that but with where my console is located no convenient way to do it and with the way my desk is set up in my office first no convenient way to just put my console up to it but I'll probably take care of both of those one day just haven't gotten around to it
Thank you for your content sir and I hope your having a great day

@@doitallYT
Yeah both of those are valid points I didn't think about a spare router but that would be a good way to do it cuz if you already have all the stuff on the laptop you can just set them near each other and let them do their thing over FTP
I'll probably try that sometime when I have a little down
Because I have no lack of spare routers laying around I do i t support for a living and I'm constantly buying random cables and spare routers just because I never know them for something
And I'm also one of those people who keeps at least one ethernet cord in my laptop bag and never no one's going to end up going to visit family or friend and have to troubleshoot something if you know what I mean
Thank you for this idea sorry I should have thought of it sooner and didn't
Thank you for your content sir and I hope you're having a good day

Is that metal arms I see??👀👀such an underrated game
You know it! Gives me strong Ratchet and Clank vibes, multiplayer is a blast too! 😁👍
Yes that game was my child hood but as a kid I was so scared of everything and couldn’t do shit but when I got older I bought it on 360 and dawg, I played the game 2 times all the way through wanna get it on my pc but I can’t find a good rom of it
@@kearik8021 yeah it's so fun, I also wanna get it on PC through Pcsx emulator but I'm very hesitant because of viruses and such always make me afraid to download things off dodgy websites
You can build the adapter by just splicing a female usb to the male end of the controller plug
Mf what
My original xbox has a digital library with hundreds of games downloaded to it
Can I do the same with this method?
you should be able to use any flash drive, just format it with FAT and it will only be 3.8 G
I saw a wild Metal Arms. Goated game.
Absolute hidden gem! Kinda Ratchet and Clank like, plus some great multiplayer! 😁👍
Back in my day we had to solder a mod chip to the motherboard
Nah, I was there. Master X Key was out in like 2004. Worked the same as the video. I never got it to work. I also only had the wrong versions of mech assualt apparantly. Finally put Insignia on my xbox for Live support again xD
I bought one off Ebay for $60 , best come up in 2022 for me
Heck of a fine dude! Nice 😁👍
Same just bought one for 60$ off Facebook and it has a blue ghost case xecutter2 chip inside think just the hard drive alone it came with was worth more than what I paid lol.
DUDE, THE SCORE 🤯 I still have my X2 chipped system, though it unfortunately is now long dead 😥 still, awesome memories!
I used to rip the hard drive out in the preboot then plug it into my pc to write the mod to the hdd
It's much easier then this now - no longer needs the game or a working DVD drive! It's so much easier now.
I actually covered that method after it drops, check out this video if you want to see it in action 😁👍

I miss that menu system
I plan on doing this too, just so I can play wwe raw 2 as it didn't work in my 360 as it was meant to.
Sounds like sound logic to me! I enjoy my copy of Mercenaries Playground of Destruction via the raw power of the Original Xbox 💪😮💪 compatibility is broken on the 360, even through RGH 😥
@@doitallYT I just need to buy one first 😂😂😂 there's a shop where I live selling them but no og controllers and I'm being picky af. Ooh nice, might have to check that out
If you have trouble tracking down an original Xbox controller, consider ordering an OGXbox360 adapter so you can use 360 controllers on it 😁👍 That's my game plan, the controllers have gotten pretty dang expensive for authentic ones, to the point where it makes more sense to order the adapter for my authentic 360 controllers 😅
W little sister
Yoo seeing metalarms is fucking awesome, not the greatest game ever but I loved it and nobody seemed to know what it was
well that process actually takes a few dozen minutes plus most OG microshit consoles have either clock capacitor damage(like my attempt at an "executor" modchip install on a v1.6 motherboard) or drive failures(requires a modchip or a tsop key dump to lock a new drive using ATA commands) or is just too crappy in cooling with the older versions of motherboard
but still that is basically how an OG softmod works as I actually saw a kid do it to an RTF console about a decade ago using a memory card he had the exploit loaded via a USB reader and a disc that had some exploit data burned on it
my mind read tony hawk and 007:agent under fire at the same time meshing them together to make tony hawk: under fire
The belt in the disk tray needs replaced, if it's not opening.
I really thought this guy was going to say because your order got picked to be filmed I’m throwing in a keychain. 😂
Used mechassault had so many games burned onto it thanks to movie rental stores and borrowing friends games. The good old days.
This does not work with most flash drives. You need a very specific kind, which are hard to get.
