Ever since I saw the characters in Fighting Evolution, I’ve been so curious as to what this game was and why it fell into a deep obscurity. Thank you for shedding light on one of the most unique fighting games ever made! Great work!
Thank you! Fighting Evolution can be fun, it's just sad that it likely killed any of Capcom's interest in doing things with the characters. Hopefully you're able to check out Red Earth at some point.
after playing this game on the collection, I gotta say, this is the best single player experience I've ever had. Can we get more of this please? More Single player content?
Glad you had fun with the game! I still play the single player in Red Earth from time to time. I like the completely different stories based on each character.
Thank you so much for this video! We Red earth community on fightcade were playing this game competitively since 2019. And practically discovered pretty much everything, although we are even discovering stuff to this day! We even wrote the wiki for each character and how good they are! This game is a gem We even have a tournament every 2 weeks. And currently we have a sundae league with 1000 euro pool.
I've only played through this via emulation, and I'm really looking forward to finally having this available in an official capacity. Playing it made me realize how much Pocket Fighter references it. Can't wait to properly explore this obscure gem, and I'm excited for others who'll get to experience this for their first time.
I'm also very happy that more people will be able to experience the game for the first time! I always liked the Red Earth references in other games, so hopefully we get to see a few more moving forward.
- Hauzer and Lavia have pursuit attacks for when you're down - Stun works like old Alpha games. If you momentarily don't get hit your stun gets reset back to zero. I had the most success with Kenji for inflicting dizzy status. - Ravange's sand priestess grab can be shaken out of but it's really tough. Same goes for Blade's mirror trap attack. Jumping behind Ravange prompts a poison gas. - The mobi chan bonus game is cute and fun during the credits.
Cross-run leveling system a-la Hades, invading other people's runs... Y'know, weird as this game is I feel it would do kinda well in the current videogame climate. Finding different people invading you with different builds that you'd have to handle differently would be cool.
I’m so hyped for this. Got to play it once on a Pandora emulation arcade box some years ago and thought I’d never get to play it again unless I got into emulation. The time has finally come.
Excellent! I had trouble finding Street Fighter III in my area, let alone any of the other few CPS III game Capcom developed. I'm glad it got around to some places so I know I didn't completely imagine the magazine preview I saw. :D Have fun with Red Earth!
This is such a badass game that needs a sequel. 19:25, nice to see the dive attack from Darkstalkers make some good use for this game. Another reason this and DS could've gotten a crossover in some way. If RPGs are doing well, this and Breath of Fire...shouldn't be far off.
The pursuit moves are definitely good in the single-player mode to get that extra splash of damage at the end some attacks! Hopefully the new collection helps Capcom decide to reference the Red Earth characters some more!
I played this game when I was like, 10 when I lived in Japan. I actually played and to come back to the states and seeing that this is an extremely obscure game, broke my heart. I’ve been waiting as long as you have to actually experience this game ♥️ I know exactly how you feel. (I have that same GamePro magazine, too)
It's a good issue of GamePro. :D That's awesome you got to play the game back when it released. I imagine the CPU would have crushed me when I was younger.
I understand a lot of people have played this on mame or fightcade and such, but I never have. CFE is already installed on my series S and I am so ready to try this game out. It looks awesome! Ready for the 24th.
Awesome! I hope you have fun with the games. I think people are sleeping on the fact Hyper SF II is on this collection. I'm really looking forward to playing that again, too.
They would definitely be a good fit for a future Capcom "Vs." game. Hopefully the new collection gets people talking about the characters again. Even appearing in other games (outside of DLC costumes) would be a step in the right direction.
My guess, especially since it was still labeled Warzard at that time, is that Nob did translations to contribute to the article. I can find shockingly little English coverage of Red Earth from the late '96/early '97 timeline. It's probably something that was floated over to GamePro from a Japanese AM show for arcade coverage, but that's just me guessing.
Thanks for this. They didn't include a game info section like they did with the Street Fighter Collection, so I had no idea what was going on in this game, other than what I could figure out on my own.
I vaguely remember that GamePro issue as a kid but then SF3 just took over. What was funny was that SF3 still had so much mystery surrounding it even so close to its feb 1997 release. From what I've heard from different sources, Capcom either gave Red Earth a very limited release, OR released enough for a decent amount of places to have....and then recalled the machines. The machines being recalled was something I heard from someone living in Japan at the time. Most of my experience playing it comes from emulation as well, since the emulation for CPS-3 was fully cracked around my 19th birthday. So I spent a lot of time playing it, and surprisingly it worked very well even on my potato of a PC at the time.
I always kind of figured any location that may have had it, just ditched it when Street Fighter III was available. It will probably just be some sort of internal secret as to what really happened with the distribution. Emulation is great is ensuring games do not get lost to time, but it's doubly great when the company supports their games as well!
Great and clear video, thanks so much. This was a game I really struggled to get to grips with when I played it a few years back on an emulator; I wanted to like it since I love the SF3 series on the CPS3. After watching this video and playing it in the new collection it's really starting to click; thanks again.
Hi! Main guy who wrote the Leo wiki and the discords resident Romhacker Good vid showcasing the game. This game is often neglected due to its small roster, which funnily enough results in people not even picking 1 of the 4 available lol Some fun facts about this game that people might find interesting - The Ice elemental super is seen as the best in the game, as its strong Vs a jumping opponent, can combo in to itself, and is pretty easy to combo in to for everyone. It also gives INSANE Experience and damage Vs a character weak to it like Hauser and Kenji - Scion can "curse" the players similar to Anakaris from the Darkstalkers series. Leo is a cub, Kenji is a beetle, Mai-Ling is a monkey and Tessa is a penguin - Leo can perform an infinite blockstring on Blade. If he jumps, and you hit him with Leo's St.5, you can jump forward in to A.4, land, ST.4 then ST.5 repeat. It doesn't chip so it's not mega useful but nice for positioning - Capcom loves layering sprites in this game. Leo's weapons, Kenji's scarf, Hydrons tentacles, etc. Ravange layers his front paws and his Lion head over the torso, layering spritrs on top of sprites! - Mashing buttons during Lighting super has more bolts appear, and for Ice Super to execute faster
Thank you! Despite how anyone thinks about the game itself, the Red Earth characters, world, presentation, etc., just has an undeniable vibe to it. I think Capcom could have borrowed from the game more than it has in the past.
It was definitely a selling point for me. I totally bought in during the Street Fighter 15th anniversary hype and got the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, Capcom Fighting Evolution and the special Akuma PS2 pad. Oddly, I enjoy that stuff more now than I did when they released.
That definitely would be a good touch. Playing as Hauzer in Capcom Fighting Evolution is kind of goofy, but I always thought it would be cool to play as Blade.
This is a great observation on this forgotten title. Also how did you get your hands on CVG magazine. I'm from Ireland and collected them during my teen year's and I was curious where you got them?
Thank you! The CVG articles in the video come from scans done by Solvalou at the web links included during the video and in the video description. I don't own any CVG magazines, but, in looking at these previews, it seems very similar to what we had with Videogames and Computer Entertainment/Videogames (VCE) in the U.S. This magazine eventually spun into Tips & Tricks, which is my favorite video gaming magazine of all time. I think if I ever branched out to getting magazines from Europe, I might start by considering CVG issues!
I know it's not an arcade game, and the only version out there has NO matchmaking, but when it comes to fighting games that are basically a boss rush, I will eternally recommend Touhou 10.5, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, and 12.3, Hisoutensoku. Hisoutensoku has a much larger cast than SWR while playing basically the same, but only has 3 story routes, covering a few of the new characters, and SWR has a story mode for every character (just a few less characters total). The story battles are awesome, round 1 is always a regular versus/arcade mode type battle, and each round after that has the player navigating through insane bullet patterns to defeat the enemy, using system mechanics that refer heavily back to the mainline Touhou series.
Capcom's Dragon Dogma 2 creators mentioned Leo of Red Earth being the reason behind introducing Lion-esque-feline Beastren race.
Here's the Red Earth vs mode tier list
Leo
POWER GAP
Tessa
MASSIVE FUCKING POWER GAP
the other 2

Can you drop a link to the wiki?
I can actually hear a smile in your voice while you are teaching this little lecture.
Thanks for the nice comment! I really appreciate it. Home console Red Earth is a long time coming. :D
I love Red Earth. I still hold out hope that Capcom will do a Red Earth 2.
I just hope they remember the series in some way the next time a Capcom "versus" game comes out. :D
