@@scurreith3667it wasn’t sensitivity. For one Leon never said anything remotely insensitive or crude. This is middle school humor at best. they were just trying to take the story seriously. People these days are not as receptive to campy humor. This game came out in 2005. The same year Batman Begins would come out and forever change audience expectations. RE4 is Batman Returns. RE4 Remake is the Dark Knight. Camp died in 2005. Spiderman 2 came out in 2004 and it was campy as hell yet still considered an instant classic. Spiderman 3 would release in 2007 and be treated as a joke by audiences. Because Nolan proved that adults could enjoy stories about ridiculous concepts like super hero’s without any lampshading or winking at the audience. He took the Batman franchise 100% seriously as cinema. Something that had previously never been done in that way.
@@scurreith3667Leon hardly says anything sensitive in the OG Pretty sure the RE4R team was just trying to take the story seriously... which imo blew in their face. I personally miss the campiness of the OG.
"I’m sure you boys didn’t just tag along so we can sing kumbaya at some boy scout bonfire, but then yet again maybe you did." THE AUDACITY OF THIS SIGMA MALE
Leon is my favorite RE character but honestly I think the title of sigma male goes to Chris. Leon has his moments with Ada while Chris is all about the mission.
The thing that made RE4 Leon so great is that he was charismatic. He's just the right combination of goofy and cool to feel like it's just uniquely his personality. He's not actively _trying_ to put on a character; he just acts as he sees fit, almost nonchalantly, which comes off as simultaneously dorky, but also badass at the same time. He's "effortlessly cool" in a sense; he's got a lot of bluster, but he backs it up with competency and has a bit of fun while he's at it. It makes him a bit weird, but... isn't that kinda what everyone is? A little weird sometimes? He's a doofus, but he's also a badass. That's what makes him _genuinely_ cool - he has a multifaceted, endearing personality, with charming humour backed up by ass-kicking capability. That's what really makes someone cool; pure charisma.
Because men are valued primarly by their competence, appearance and social hierarchy position. personality comes below those cathegories (whereas women are valued by their appearance and personality - and by personality its usually agreeable-ness, humour and positivity. Those aspects are also interchangeable i.e. a super hot girl can get away with being less pleasant and agreeable - with it labelled as being 'confidence', while a more average looking girl will more often come across as arrogant, stuck up, "a bitch" and so on). Leon happens to score quite high in those three cathegories so he can have whatever personality the writers decide to put into him that people are gonna praise it.
It took me all these years to understand the “sandwiched” reference. And the fact that he prefaces it with “I hate to say it.” Because it’s the OG resident evil bad joke and he didn’t want to invoke cringe. It’s actually brilliant
The best part is that his enemies laugh at his jokes, like, they wanna kill him, but they still find him to be really funny, specially Saddler, maybe that's why he never used his plaga control powers to just straight up kill Leon (when he tried at the end of the game it was too late).
I am gonna miss this Leon, the new maybe more believable, but it's not the same without the quirky lines and him possibly actually having fun during the game. Edit: Turne out Leon is still his old quirky self, thank god.
@@rawmaw I mean, the script is the same, but as much as I'd like to say I love it, I think the VA just doesn't do that good of a job delivering the funny lines. He fits Leon perfectly most of the time, but his cheesy one-liners just don't sound the same. It's not as funny if you don't try to sound overly cool while saying them LMAO.
@@sasha_vb I'm sorry to hear you experience with the game so far. Luckily, I disagree. I'll admit that I do prefer the VA, but the new guy is a dandy replacement. Regardless, I hope you enjoy the rest of what the game has to offer :)
When i played RE4 for the first time, i didnt understand a word of english, i just played along doing trial and error. I always thought about how leon was going around saying the coolest, deepest and most 90s action movie kinds of phrases. Only to become fluent in english and realise he was just pseudo-shitposting all along lmao. In Ada's scene i used to think he was all like "i have to be quick!" or "Damn it!", turns out all he said was "damn she actually pressed it"
The demo to the remake taught us two things. The first comes with the bingo line, and it shows that they’re not going to be getting rid of some of the campy iconic lines from the original, despite them not being as serious, and the second comes from him saying “I guess I’ll let myself out.” and jumping out a window, which shows that they are also adding new campy lines to it, so it’s safe to say that the overall vibe of tue remake will be the same as the original, and despite changes in appearance and voice, this is the same Leon we know and love.
@@artemis477 Unfortunately, they have removed some of them, including my personal favorite, "No thanks, bro." However, after playing through the game, it's clear that they got rid of those lines, not because the game is more gritty, but because they wanted the game to feel like a remake, and not a carbon copy of the original, and so in the place of the old lines, they have tons of new witty banter from Leon.
In my opinion Leon from RE2 would die in the universe of RE4, the enemies are much more dangerous and intelligent. In this game he basically beat an army all by himself.
"Monsters. Looks like after this there'll be one less to worry about." That sounds like something that was kept over from the original Devil May Cry script.
@@nocturnerequiem4756 I know that. Resident Evil 4 had gone through several revisions and at one point spawned Devil May Cry 1 as a result of one of the scripts. I was just highlighting that dialogue as a possible carryover.
This early 2000s humor died the same year RE4 came out. Who killed it? Christopher Nolan with Batman Begins. He took Batman seriously and never once winked at the audience and it worked. Audiences ate it up. And we’ve never looked back. While marvel would blend humor and seriousness with iron man, it would never go back to the campy humor of the Spider-Man trilogy. Not saying this is good or bad. It just fascinates me.
The best part is that most of these aren’t overtly corny or silly. Like you probably won’t spit milk out your nose the first time you hear “we’re sandwiched alright”, but after a few… hundred playthroughs you start to realize how dumb Leon sounds making such a crass statement under such dire circumstances
What I like about Leon is that he doesn't break the immersion with jokes all the time. He sure leaves some comments out of nowhere here and there but he treats the situation he's in very seriously. I wish we had more characters in zombie outbreak or dangerous situations like Leon. We pretty much have a huge number of jokers in zombie apocalipse that beat zombies in a "cool" way taking away the feeling of fighting for your own life and that's it. I don't know how they found the perfect way of writing a character that can beat dangerous enemies, fight for his on life and make some jokes here and there without take away all the tension of a survivor game
I think it helped that they gave us little snippets of him suffering when he got the egg iinjected in him. Like in the village hes chill but once hes infected and at the castle you get a sense of seriousness and danger? We also loose Luis here so it adds alot more seriousness of the matter. The Island part is a whole other "his is the last part have fun with the action craziness." Thats how it felt to me anyway. The castle enemies could be a tad annoying and a ramp up compared tot he villagers but once you get to the island it becomes more action more freedom to move around cause you know how to play better. I think the only difficulty were those freeze thing you had to shoot at certain body parts.

He was just checking if Luis was right about the Prez equipping his daughter with Ballistics

Pretty sure the RE4R team was just trying to take the story seriously... which imo blew in their face. I personally miss the campiness of the OG.

HAHAH I LET OUT THE UGLIEST LAUGH AT THAT PART
I hope if I am ever in a truly concerning situation I handle it as well as Leon does.

Leon, who up until last night thought she'd been dead for eight years: O.O
I don't know why of all the cringey baffling lines that this one is the worst. It's just like...why would he even bother saying that?? Lol
I still find it funny that Salazar and Saddler somehow managed to hijack Leon's codec and talk to him like a scam phone call in the original lmao
"Hey, we're calling you about your attache case's extended fuckin' warranty."
No disrespect to the remake, but his humor make og 4 Leon superior

Eh Spider-Man does it better.
@@sonicsucks20 but spiderman character isn't made to be badass, his character's made to feel cool
Same deal as zack fair from crisis core, I think. I love these characters 💕
Kind of reminds me of Dante

The window one was a pretty good addition
Nah, his voice sucks now.
@@pleasekillyoursefshit made me chuckle
But they’re removing some of them; no thanks, bro
@@artemis477 Unfortunately, they have removed some of them, including my personal favorite, "No thanks, bro." However, after playing through the game, it's clear that they got rid of those lines, not because the game is more gritty, but because they wanted the game to feel like a remake, and not a carbon copy of the original, and so in the place of the old lines, they have tons of new witty banter from Leon.

Classic early 2000's humour, it's odd but I love it.
2:17
*Greatest line in Resident Evil history.*
It’s genuinely hilarious all the trash talk Leon and Salazar exchange in this game 😂
It's cause it balances out with scenes that show he clearly doesn't know whats going on and is put off by the situation
1:15 okay but that was lowkey ice cold leon didn't have to do him dirty like that
