Thanks for turning me on to TANIT's video. Very cool. To answer your question, at the moment I don't have any plans to do more than the Combat Mission videos inasmuch as I still have to review games for Armchair General on a regular basis, and have a rather demanding day job as well. Maybe sometime in the future. Regarding ARMA - my son, an Iraq war combat veteran (fought in 2004-2005 in Ramadi-Falluja area, purple heart, etc.); he really likes that game and finds it quite realistic.
I have not played Steel Beasts. I have a prejudice: I find that most war games are too tank-centric. They accurately model tank on tank combat, but don't realistically model infantry combat. CM is an exception because of the AI built into each team that models the psychology of how humans perform under pressure. The most unrealistic aspect of war games is that they give you much more information than you would have in reality and time is compressed. These features make the game fun.
Again--very nicely done! Your opponent did you a big favor attacking all along your front. It would have been interesting to see how a single thrust on one flank would have played out. I bet he would have cracked your MLR, but then your unengaged troops would be on his flanks in hedgerows.
Just gave this mission a try (Germans vs AI) and while I didn't copy your setup exactly, it did look rather similar when I was done. Result was a major German victory, but: It seems to me that the AI is kinda dumb in certain respects. When I examined the map after the battle, I saw what must've been the AI's reinforments (mostly mounted infantry) on the far side of the map and none of them had been moved by the computer player...weird
The AI in Combat Mission is good to practice on, but does not compare with playing a human. I play CM almost exclusively by email with human opponents.
videos like this will keep the great old war games alive, thank you sir!
You have to be a former officer man, this is something out of a Coyle Novel man!
He actually is :P
He said he was a company commander in the infantry iirc. I agree, this is fascinating to watch, he uses elegant and fluid tactics.
He's a retired Lieutenant Colonel! : )
bring more like this.
that was great. Thanks much. Swell depiction of the usefulness of the well timed counterattack.
It's a pure pleasure to watch Your indepth AARs. Keep them coming.
Awesome video
Well done indeed, one of the best video AAR's I've seen.
Beautifully done sir!
