Thank you for being one of the few reviewers who actually go in depth about animation, what we see on screen as well as behind-the-scenes! So many people claim a movie has "good animation", when they are actually just referring to the lighting instead of the actual acting. I love hearing your analysis on the acting choices and what the movies make you feel! I've been following the Pixar Quality series and it makes my day whenever I see a new one on the timeline :) Thank you for making these videos.
The ending of this had me bawling like a little kid. I got diagnosed age 26 and the way you described the tension between the need to be accepted vs the need to be yourself, hit like a truck. It is real exhausting line to walk. But something I’ve learned is, everyone else, to a greater or lesser degree, is walking it with you. The same is true in ratatouille. Remy is hiding behind linguini. But camille is also hiding behind her tough facade. The critic behind his intellect. The restaurant owner behind the legacy of his predecessor. Etc. We all put up a face. It’s just that some do it more than others, because they are at a bigger disadvantage. And that can hurt, And it sucks. But there is also shared humanity (and hope) in it. I hope this video gets a million views You deserve it.
I hadn’t considered how the masks are reflected in other characters, that’s a fantastic observation. Thank you for watching my video and for your lovely comment!
I'm very glad you skimmed some of the finer points of his Anton Ego and his iconic speech. Because while definitely a fantastic, important moment for the film, it's also been analyzed to death in countless other forms and I'm glad you had more to say about Remy's specific arc and changing priorities across the film. Truthfully, Ratatouille was never one of my favorite Pixar firms. I've always found its loose narrative makes for an unengaging middle act, I think Linguini is a remarkably shallow and dull character to revolve almost so much of the movie on, and I think the emotional beats are a lot less sincere than most other Pixar films; even many of the ones that I don't like as much still feel as though they have more heart in some regard. But this video and its point abiut linking the story to a neurodivergent lifestyle is definitely interesting and worth considering, even if I don't personally connect to it.
Beautifully well made video… ratatouille Initially made me super passionate about cooking and I got an internship and even won a culinary scholarship only to realize I hated working in a professional kitchen because it’s hot and stressful and loud. Then it became a message of “anyone can cook” as I realized that any random person can be an actor as I got the lead role in a school play and felt like I could actually act for a living. And now realizing that I’m just like my oldest brother and I too have autism is refreshing and honestly healing in a sense. I’m glad I’m not alone in loving this film as deeply as I do. Thank you for making this video. And I hope you make more as it is delightfully well made and it makes me happy. 💖
You've written the greatest "youtube video essay" I've seen in a long time and you've inspired me to keep working on a certain video I've been trying to make for ages. Thank you. I will be returning to your channel soon, hungry for more.
Thanks for this series. Don't stop making videos about pieces of media that you care about, and take as long as you need to make them something you're satisfied with. I'll be there when you do. Merry Christmas.
this was a great video, and I just want to say how much I appreciate how you talked about the smaller details. a lot of people just watch movies and think they look great but only just subconsciously, many times people don't even stop to think about just how much time and effort and care goes into something that will only be seen for a few seconds even though that level of detail is incredibly important to make the project feel the way it does. stuff like this is what I geek out about and no one wants to hear about it lol. I just have so much respect for all of it--sound design, lighting, music, animation, the backgrounds, the character models. sorry for blathering lol. I just don't often see a lot of people talk about it the way I think of it so it was really nice to hear someone else discuss it too.
50:39 counting, keeping track of mistakes during daily interactions was major part of my adolescent life. Overanalyzing things I said, how I said them, how ppl reacted, etc. The constant simulation and scripting for future interactions. Trying to perform “normal.” Sad part is, it worked. Until it didn’t. Like you mentioned too, I felt more and more detached from myself. Always wanting to please, or rather not upset others. Trying my very best just to keep up with peers and live up to piling up expectations. Constant masking comes at a big cost. It’s a coping mechanism, a clutch. And I’m learning to let go, reconnect with my emotions, and challenge negative beliefs. Thank you for the video, I figured I’d share my experience and some things I learned.
I love how passionate you are in these videos. It really comes through in your vocal delivery and the writing that you are thrilled to be talking about these movies. Honestly, it’s an energy that I feel is so hard to find to this extent anywhere else on RUclips. I am very excited to finally see the end of this project, even if it will also make me sad that there are no more Pixar movies to talk about for this series.
Thank you so much for following along with the series! At some point down the road I'll definitely make the time to speak about the films they made after 2020, so I hope you enjoy those when they happen.
going to watch this movie again right after this vid!! its always been one of my favs as an artist, a human, and as someone who needed a safe space to express myself authentically. thank you for expressing so articulately how you feel about this film, it really spoke to me.
oh this video feels like homemade soup it's my first time seeing your channel and i love the way you structured and ordered the different topics as someone who has also recently received a late autism diagnosis at 25, there were so many things you said that just clicked like i never thought to view the film in with a neurodivergent lens but the more i think about it, the more i find myself being like "oh no wonder i felt so personally invested in these scenes and moments in the film" some favorites, including but not limited to - the scene with the strawberry and cheese (a classic, this and the jimmy neutron brain blast are my favorite ways to visualize how abstract thinking n pattern recognition feels when waist deep in some new interest) - the way remy has to find a practical and more socially acceptable but less fulfilling outlet for his interest in food when in the colony (poison checker, his dad simplifying all of remy's passions and loves down to just his talented nose and putting him in a little box where remy can be useful with it,, it reminds me wayy to much of how i find myself approaching my future--looking at the mess that is my personality/interests/talents and saying "what can we salvage and prune to use to be a good participant of society"), -everything you said about the difference in satisfaction of seeing remy cook via linguini vs with his own two rat hands (the masking bit,, i remember in middle school i would be unaffected by compliments or affection because to me it was like yeah ofc you like me as a person, i curated an entire personality preset to be your ideal friend for when i'm around you. nothing beats the feeling of when someone enjoys your company without you having to police your every action) i'm just rambling at this point but yes i just really liked the way you scripted this video, i like how it started with your parents(really added to the soupy nature of the video,, the narration to your ratatouille if you will), and i like how you went into the craft of the film and then finished it off with the themes and message. insanely engaging hour long vid and i can't wait to binge your other videos:D hope you have a wonderful day
These are the most insightful and well put together animation reviews on the internet. I love how you dive so deep into each movie and really give it your all every time. Thank you so much for making these, they are incredible and I have rewatched all of them multiple times (and will continue to do so). As an animation fan I'm clinging to the hope that you'll make a similar series for Disney or Dreamworks, but I'm on board for whatever you do next. This was the best one yet, I can't wait for the finale!
i have much, much more to say, but i havent finished the video yet, and i am already absolutely struck. thank you for making this, i didnt expect to feel so seen in it, and ill need to watch the film again too. youve reached me and my life in ways id never thought. thank you truly, beautiful work.
without a doubt one of the best reviews I've ever seen. watching this has made me realise how much other reviewers leave out when it comes to discussing the production side of animated movies. I feel like you're the first person I've seen actually cover stuff like character acting in animation, let alone in such depth, which, as an artist, is crucial to hear talked about and reflected upon in order to know how to improve my own work. and also it's just really cool. also, just loved your personal approach to talking about this film and hearing all the love you have for it. I am also neurodivergent but I honestly have been struggling to recognise if I mask in social situations or not until hearing your personal experience with it and the way you explained it. definitely going to be reflecting on that for while, so thank you for being the first person to explain it in a way that made sense to me.
The algorithm makes it hard to find your channel but whenever I see a new video I get excited. Thank you for doing such an interesting, in-depth look at these movies
Wow, this is just a beautifully crafted video, it's so well done and well spoken aswell. when I saw this video and clicked on it I looked at the time being 1 hr and I wouldn't think I'd actually watch it all or I'd get bored but I didn't, and I love what your perspective brings to this.
I used to love hearing the actor behind Alfredo in the BTS of another pixar movie (I think The Incredibles?) where he would rant at the writers room. It's so uncanny how much of his natural expressiveness is in the character, like you pointed out micah i adored this video. This whole series I think is sort of the definition of taking fun seriously. There is so much energy, insight, and deliberateness in your writing as it stands right now. And like WOW im amazed as to how long you've committed to this project lmao some of my thoughts :) I've always had a kind of specific fixation on Ratatouille but, to be honest, I've sort of brushed The Rat aside as not really THE main character. Linguine was always, to me, the main character. He's the only one who regularly interacts with the majority of the cast, after all. Its him who has things to lose, and he's the person who makes the most definitive choices in the plot. That this positions the human story as the focus means I've kind of had to work with a slightly incoherent interpretation that Alfredo represents, well, "ego", while Remy represents something like ambition. Alfredo begins the story put upon and with seemingly no prospects until he enters a partnership with Remy, his ambition, who propels him to a clearer vision of his best self. Eventually this relationship becomes stagnant and kind of abusive and he has to fix that before he can ultimately acheive stability. There are a lot of wholes in this reading but it's how I've chosen to view the film basically Forever lol Hearing you center Remy (Remi? Remmie? Remmey? Shit) and his journey honestly made me view the movie very differently. You're so right that the scene where he cooks soup for the first time is beautiful and aspirational and the entire rest of the story exists in its shadow. Remy must be able to cook again, to be free and love his work. It really does define the stakes. I just thought that was an incredible observation and it made me view the movie as sort of ...more actually human. Thank you for your hard work and for the craftsmanship and rigor and fun that goes into these videos. Seriously kudos man :)
As a neurodivergent trans guy named Rem. Yeah 🥹 I think this is my favorite movie, point blank, period. There’s a pretty popular tumblr post pointing out that the sexual dimorphism in the rats is exclusively their size, and that Remy is the only male rat that’s smaller. In reality it’s probably because he’s younger (?) but the “You can’t change nature” “Change is nature” exchange has always spoken to me…. But, yeah, in general, the process of masking to seem more palatable to others is very similar to having to stay closeted, or even overcompensate gender wise to be taken seriously (by some people (others of whom will simply never Get It)) Like… a rat in a kitchen lol. Remy just wants to exist and be happy!! I just want to exist and be happy!! Truly is The Movie of All Time to me.
I guess that explains why I adore Ratatouille (and why I eventually got pet rats). I didn't know I was autistic until I was about 15, but I always related to Remy in almost the exact same way you did. Wonderful video. Your analysis was extremely interesting to listen to- both thorough and heartwarming. It's cool to see other neurodivergent people talk about things they love. I feel less alone when I see this kind of joy expressed over things that people like me love.
Ratatouille is is a masterclass in balancing more adult themes, like Skinner’s conversations with his lawyer, Ego’s entire criticism monologue that went over my seven year old head watching in theatre. But I understood the key message of the joy and struggle of artistry which I would become very intimately familiar with as I grow as an artist
SALUTATIONS!!! I'm back!!! And you're back!!! A dinosaur story!!! I just finished watching this--and since I'm home for break I actually got to witness its debut, TV-style!!!!!! Once again, a Pixar Quality episode has made me Feel Things in the best of ways. Ratatouille is admittedly a film I haven't revisited in years, but I respect it for the effect it's had on people (and may very well have on me, upon rewatch). Its thematic drive and love-of-the-art is its heart through and through, and nothing has made this more clear to me than the readings and adoration it's received from people such as yourself--those engaged in the art of creation and criticism alike. Today has been strangely up and down for me and brought to the surface some anxieties and frustrations I have in relation to my own neurodivergence. Nothing like self-hate--it took me a while but I finally achieved self-love and yes it's Everything and I hope that everyone Gets Here. This video was, in a sense, everything I needed to hear, on this particular day. And the way that you spoke of your own experience, your own emotional connection to this film, and the way your relationship to art and criticism has changed to reflect your relationship with your Self, really hit home for me in the best of ways. I personally have grown to adore the art of media criticism in tandem with growing to know and love myself, and I think that's because media criticism--the real, earnest kind which you practice--is, as you say, a reflection of the critic themself. It's a reflection of our personal values and beliefs. We as people want to See Ourselves, and our criticism (positive and negative) is emblematic of what we value. This entire ranking series you've been passionately creating says so much more about you than it does these films (although you do bring an amount of knowledge and expertise surrounding the technical side of film creation to these reviews that I appreciate deeply, and that lends a whole world of insight into their creation). In saying that, I don't wish to downplay that filmic knowledge and schema that grants the movies themselves a newfound sense of depth that only behind-the-scenes stories can; I just want you to know that, at the end of the day, I'm here for You. I couldn't care less about the order in which these are ranked; it's the stories and emotions and Sincerity and spontaneous songs that you bring to each evaluation/exploration that keeps me coming back. There's a tragic drought of Sincerity in the world and online spaces such as this; mainstream media criticism scarcely spans beyond the technical. You putting so much of your Self into this, taking up the space, treating each story as a canvas onto which to project your own experiences and feelings, is the most important thing. Every story, every piece of Art, is a Conversation, and I truly, truly appreciate that you took the time in this video to emphasize that--that you Know that, and that your work stems from that foundational knowledge of the profoundly human Connection behind all creation! My hope is that this rambling comment will make some sort of sense. I've been telling family and friends alike how awesome this series is--how Sincere this series is--because of the L O V E you bring to it. These films matter so much to me now--in so many new ways--because they matter to You. And it's through this series that I feel that I've been able to connect to You--not in a parasocial way, I assure you, but the way all Art is meant to connect to its Audience. The creator telling a story, sending a message, being their authentic self and sharing themself with the world. Self love and earnest Self expression are not easy or linear paths, especially in a world that seems structured to discourage both. But I'm so so so glad you're here, and that you're striving towards both, as I am, and will continue to. I hope everybody Gets Here.
NOOOOOOOOOO. Ratatouille #2 Damn. IT! I guessed wrong... Nontheless... Thanks for the video. One hell of a christmas gift, Senior Edmonds. Merry christmas.
I just discovered your videos, and I am utterly blown away by the excellence and sincerity of your writing. The last section moved me to tears. I will be returning to your channel soon, hungry for more :)
I dont have the words for how great I think this essay is, I just can't find them, but as an autistic person, I spent the last twenty minutes with tears welled in my eyes and more emotions than I can name going through my mind. This was really well done. Have some flowers 💐💐💐💐
There is one left and I don’t know what it is I’ll have to compare your rankings to the pixar filmography to spot what it is dang it your review series has been so staggering so grand
This was a very lovely piece, thank you for sharing it. I will most certainly be coming back for more It's also always nice to hear such things from a fellow late dx neurodivergent 💕
Jesus Christ that took long. Dude I support you, life is life. This isn't your job, no expectations. But some of us are waiting. Please remember us. Muchas Gracias. And Merry Christmas.
like the bear is really good love the show, but multiple episodes have made me feel sooooo uncomfortable and triggered LMFAO, which may be the point but don’t blame you
I'm 2/3 of the way through the video and I'm pretty sure the word neurodivergence hasn't been used once. I really hope it wasn't a bait and switch title.
Absolutely no joke, I studied this film in high school and for the past few weeks have been trying to remember what it's called. Thanks for the reminder! Gorgeous movie, I'd love to revisit it.
Actually he is a rat.
Actually it's food
@cubephonium4501 No, I don't think that's it.

oh this video feels like homemade soup
it's my first time seeing your channel and i love the way you structured and ordered the different topics
as someone who has also recently received a late autism diagnosis at 25, there were so many things you said that just clicked like i never thought to view the film in with a neurodivergent lens but the more i think about it, the more i find myself being like "oh no wonder i felt so personally invested in these scenes and moments in the film"
some favorites, including but not limited to
- the scene with the strawberry and cheese (a classic, this and the jimmy neutron brain blast are my favorite ways to visualize how abstract thinking n pattern recognition feels when waist deep in some new interest)
- the way remy has to find a practical and more socially acceptable but less fulfilling outlet for his interest in food when in the colony (poison checker, his dad simplifying all of remy's passions and loves down to just his talented nose and putting him in a little box where remy can be useful with it,, it reminds me wayy to much of how i find myself approaching my future--looking at the mess that is my personality/interests/talents and saying "what can we salvage and prune to use to be a good participant of society"),
-everything you said about the difference in satisfaction of seeing remy cook via linguini vs with his own two rat hands (the masking bit,, i remember in middle school i would be unaffected by compliments or affection because to me it was like yeah ofc you like me as a person, i curated an entire personality preset to be your ideal friend for when i'm around you. nothing beats the feeling of when someone enjoys your company without you having to police your every action)
i'm just rambling at this point but yes i just really liked the way you scripted this video, i like how it started with your parents(really added to the soupy nature of the video,, the narration to your ratatouille if you will), and i like how you went into the craft of the film and then finished it off with the themes and message.

What an incredible introduction to your channel. This hour long video flew by. So engaging. Great work

I just discovered your videos, and I am utterly blown away by the excellence and sincerity of your writing. The last section moved me to tears.
I will be returning to your channel soon, hungry for more :)
What a beautiful essay. What a way to be seen through my masking by a person who experienced the same process as me. Just. Beautiful.
I dont have the words for how great I think this essay is, I just can't find them, but as an autistic person, I spent the last twenty minutes with tears welled in my eyes and more emotions than I can name going through my mind. This was really well done. Have some flowers 💐💐💐💐
That was freaking amazing

You are valid, King. Go off and make your Ratatouille. I'll be ready to watch it when it drops.

I’m so sorry!!! I’ll try to get the last one for you asap. Merry Christmas!
Beautiful video! Remember, all masking is self-ouchie and anyone asking you to is never worth your time.❤
This is awesome
hi i found your channel by asking gpt for the best most creative less known youtubers, pretty interesting huh
When you asked what her favorites were my first two guesses were toy story and finding neemo
like the bear is really good love the show, but multiple episodes have made me feel sooooo uncomfortable and triggered LMFAO, which may be the point but don’t blame you
I'm 2/3 of the way through the video and I'm pretty sure the word neurodivergence hasn't been used once. I really hope it wasn't a bait and switch title.
I was a little worried about this since the discussion of that topic comes later into the video, so I do hope you stuck around!
You should do a video on marry and max
Absolutely no joke, I studied this film in high school and for the past few weeks have been trying to remember what it's called. Thanks for the reminder! Gorgeous movie, I'd love to revisit it.
I like your videos... that is all
