Assam is one state in India that has a third of its area covered in forests, or so claims the state's forest department. Why, then, do we see elephants venturing out into human settlements, raiding crops and destroying homes?
Why in the land of the elephant deity has the animal become a monster to many? What has led to an increase in violent confrontations that have not only killed over 800 innocent people, but also at least 800 elephants in their own home, over the last decade?
