- Thinking about getting the Z-Man Trout Trick?
We were recently out with a local guide filming some tips and one of the lures that he loved using for trout and redfish was the Trout Trick.
We caught tons of fish on it that day, so we figured we'd do a review of it for you.
In this video, we're breaking down everything you need to know about it, including:
- how to rig it
- the top pros and cons (it's definitely not a perfect lure!)
- why it works so well
- and much more
We've also got some fun footage of us catching fish with it.
If you're thinking about getting this lure, you're going to love this video.
Have you used the Z-Man Trout Trick before?
What did you think?

These are some seriously underrated tarpon lures. They look just like a small needlefish or ladyfish facing into the current, just cast them upcurrent and slowly swim them back along the bottom. Killer under docklights for snook and big trout too. Erratic jigging off the bottom near dropoffs are great for redfish, flounder, trout, and big snook. These things catch everything that swims.
Thanks for this review - well done
Thoughts on the trout trick with the paddle tail? I find them very effective.
Wyatt - good review. Especially helpful was the comparison of the hook lengths for rigging.
How do work them

I use the Fried Chicken color on the flats around the Big Bend area. Have even caught a small cobia on it.
Nice review Wyatt. I have the smaller 3" TT w/ paddletail, but not the longer profile version like you review here. Also, very cool that you were able to get out with Jud from EC. I follow both the Salt Strong and EC channels so it was awesome to see yall were able to link up and wet some lines.
For some reason I cn never get the x man to stay on the spiked jigheads. They just never hold on no matter how much I squeeze them down on the barb
have caught plenty of nice trout, blues, reds, spanish, big flounder, black sea bass, octopus, little grouper, little cobia. all in the same spot on the same color. trout tricks work.
What color?
What are the best ways to retrieve this bait?
As demonstrated in the on-the-water footage, a simple twitch-twitch-pause is the ideal retrieve for this lure.
@@Saltstrong don't know how I missed that. Sorry.
How do you retrieve it
A twitch-twitch-pause retrieve tends to work best. You can continuously bounce it along the bottom as well, but the pause gives predators the opportunity to strike (if you notice in the video, the redfish hit on the pause).
Ok thanks
hey yall,I was wondering if you had any good fishing spots for fishing from the shore in the Melbourne beach area?
Yes, we have a lot of Insider Club members in that area. And many have posted reports of fun wade fishing trips from Melbourne to Sebastian in the Insider Community part of our site. I highly recommend giving the club a shot. Here's a link for more info on it: www.saltstrong.com/
Slam shady’ arch nemesis lol
How about the fresh water?
what are some good surf fishing lures in texas?
Don't put Trout Trick in same bin with other soft plastics or they'll melt.
All Z-Man lures are that way ... and they say that right on the pack. Don't even put them in a regular tackle box. Keep them in their original package.
Are these good for smallies and large mouths ?
