  • It is so easy to replace the controller on your Treager, Pit Boss or many common pellet grills.
    I take you through the step-by-step process showing which connectors go to the Hot Rod, Auger Motor, Induction Fan, RTD Probe and AC Power.
    I also show you how to easily diagnose when your Hot Rod is tripping a circuit breaker.

    You Sir saved me a bunch of time. I thought for some reason the auger was the fan and vise versa. Couldn't figure out for thr life of me why when it got up to temp the fan kicked off and the auger kept running. Thank you!

    Thanks for the how to video. Made the controller replacement easy. The testing tip was great. Always a good feeling to know things work before everything is buttoned back up. 👍🏼

    Thank you so much for including a wiring diagram. I am red/green defecting in my vision (my eye dr was careful to make sure I understood i'm not colorblind, but some colors are difficult to distinguish between). Your careful explanation makes this a simple job for anyone. I just ran the new controller through 450 and it worked fantastically.

    That’s pretty neat that you know everything about the pellet grills plus you also do a great job on painting them and making them look brand new. I had to replace the temperature probe on my Pit Boss l kinda thing that it came defective from the factory because I got my pellet grill new and in two months my temperature gauge was going up and down and gave me a code that the grill was to hot and it was just warm. Replaced it and works great now. Thank you for the video it really helps to understand everything that you explained. Have a great day.👍🏽

      Thanks. My learning came through a lot of tinkering and trial/error.
      Make sure to keep the probes clean and shinny and they should read correctly.
      Fortunately the RTD probes are not very expensive and fairly easy to replace.
      Thanks for watching!

    Really helpful video. I used the video to upgrade a 15 year old Traeger Junior grill from the original 3 position switch, (smoke, medium, high) to the digital controller. The diagram is helpful and the explanation of how everything connects is very clear. Just follow the steps and you should not have any issues. Great video.

    Great video. Thanks for posting. Just an observation. The wire passing through the rusty sidewall (temp probe) should be protected with a rubber grommet. It might be the cause of failure on those probes. :)

    I have a pitboss with a wifi connection. The temperature is all over the place, meaning the thermometer on the door, the temp on the computer and a mobile thermometer set on the rack don't match. Have replaced the machines temp rod and still nit much better. I have another pitboss with a basic controller and holds temperature great. Can I put the controller you showed in this video to replace the "fancy" controller?
    Fixing this up for my daughter in law so they can make some deliciousness for Pawpaw.
    Thanks

      It has been a while since I worked on a Pit Boss. My last one had a horizontal LCD screen that was proprietary.
      My guess is it it has WFi, it is probably not interchangeable with the one I used on the Traeger.
      Yest your lid thermometer and probe thermometer in boiling water. They should both read approx 212.
      You will see drift in the grill as it feeds and burns new pellets and then they burn down before it feeds again. Not unusual to see 10-15 degree drifts as you cook. Set at 225... it may go.up to 240 and down as low as 210. The food doesn't know the difference!
      Call Pit Boss and chat with their customer care. They may be able to troubleshoot.
      Good luck!

    Thanks for the video! My treager keeps smoking from the hopper and I've changed the motor, cleared the auger, put in a new pot and still smokes from hopper? Could it be the control panel? I tried roasting a chicken at 350 but after 20 minutes, smoke started smoking from the hopper again. Would love your thoughts?

    • @bbqplus
      @bbqplus  4 месяца назад

      Couple ideas...
      1. Have you changed the induction fan?
      2. What shape is your burn pot in? If it has rusted out, bigger holes in the pot could cause smoke to backflow.
      3. If you have your hopper off, maybe replace the seal where hopper rests on auger tunnel.

    Would be helpful to show how to connect the temperature wire into controller for old grills with blue box connection. Thanks

    Sorry I missed it. Why was the fuse blowing?

    • @bbqplus
      @bbqplus  3 месяца назад

      Random things can cause a fuse to blow. A shorted hot rod xan trip your house circuit.
      Nice that fuses on grills are easy to replace... if you know where they are!

    Question, when I turn my Traeger on the auger keeps feeding pellets continuous. Would this be a controller issue?

    • @bbqplus
      @bbqplus  Месяц назад

      @@mbuckingham that would be my guess. The auger motor runs when the controller sends power to it.
      Easy to replace.

    Thanks. Do you know if you could put a newer upgraded controller on an old Traeger? Mine is from 2010, still works, but if the controller went out curious if I could replace it with one that had the temperature probes.

    • @bbqplus
      @bbqplus  Год назад +1

      Absolutely! The Traeger in the video is a 2003 model.
      Controllers, hot rods, induction fans, RTD probes, firepots and most augers (post 2000) are all interchangable.
      The newer controllers have a shutdown cycle that burns out any remaining pellets in the firepot. I would definitely upgrade.

    My treager shuts down at high temps, what would cause that

    • @bbqplus
      @bbqplus  Год назад

      Sounds like your RTD sensor might be the issue. This is the silver rod that reports back the grill temps.
      Spray it with Dawn Power Wash and then take some steel wool to shine it up.
      Is that doesn't remedy it, you may need to replace the RTD.
      Good luck!
