- A Steve Nicol hat-trick plus a goal from John Aldridge help Liverpool to a 4-1 win over Newcastle at St James Park. Neil McDonald scored the consolation from the penalty spot. Two more Liverpool goals were disallowed in a great performance.
One of my favs from this season. What a hat trick from nicol 🎉
steve nicol pure class that day
Growing up in the 80s, rushie was, and still is my Liverpool hero. Although, John Aldridge was very close behind. Now I'm older and can see the stats, 63 goals in 104 games, wow.
Motson saying Aldridge was offside at 3:52, madness. The grounded player in the left back position is playing him about two yards on!
Absolute madness I know..
The cup final of 86 lfc v everton
Rush was 2 yards on side and linesman flagged for offside lol crazy .. back then linesman weren't fully professional that's why no wonder Jimmy hill came on as a linesman in the 70s lol
4:13 is when Steve Nicol said he almost missed the sitter.
Thank you lmao
Attended this game, in the little away section, great day out & aftermatch piss up
What would klopp give to have this 11 at his disposal today?
Nicol gets a lot of grief and rightly so but he could play and play all across the back and midfield. Top player in a top team. Barnes and Beardsley were outrageously good as well and that's just 3.
I know I’m really late to this but can I ask why Nicol gets a lot of stuck? Cheers
I think this is as a pundit, not as a player. I haven't seen him as a pundit, but it sounds as though he probably isn't as good at that as he was as a player (although, that would be difficult).
@@DaveWallerLFC ah fair enough, thanks for the reply

Totally agree.
@@markwhittaker6866 who was ur hero mate

In that team John Barnes.
Peter Beardsley a very close second.
@@markwhittaker6866 mine was Steve nicol and john Aldridge
Some strange decisions!
Nicol 4 Newcastle 1
Think Robertson and Trent have been studying Steve Nicholl highlights......modern full backs...it's all been done before.
He could defend better than they can, and scored more goals. But that's not to insult Robbo and Trent as Nicol was one of the all time LFC greats.
@@DaveWallerLFC Same for Barney Rubble....could defend and a real threat in attack.
Nicol should have had 5.
Nicol had a stormer, and what was Lawrenson doing in the number 9 shirt?
I guess the strikers didn't want it when Rush left (Aldridge always wore 8 as Roger Hunt was his hero), so it was normally worn by Craig Johnston or Ray Houghton after he signed. In this game Nicol played right midfield instead of Johnston but kept his normal number 4, so 9 was the spare number for Lawrenson as his replacement at left back.
It was very complicated. This was one of the stand out games for that season.
Could have had 5.
Playing a centre back with the number 9 jersey that day must have confused Newcastle so much they forgot to play full backs 🤣
Great solo performance though.
What an amazing season
I agree mate
@@waynehigham6504 John Barnes loves a red Ferrari

Nicol disallowed goal possibly the worst offside decision in history.
There was a player in an offside position. The rules on interfering with play were different then.
@@DaveWallerLFC I know that but If you watch the replay at 3.53 the player Nicol beats before he puts it in is on the floor and player Aldridge on by a mile.
Just watched it again and you're right.
I was at the game Liverpool were as good as Newcastle were bad
That seems harsh on Newcastle, given how good Liverpool were.
@@DaveWallerLFC LOOK at Newcastle's defending, Stevie Wonder could have done better
