  • Steve Nicol is one of the best defenders to have ever played for the club and his versatility made him invaluable. Indeed the the £300,000 Bob Paisley paid Ayr United to bring him to Anfield in October 1981 proved one of the bargain deals of all time.
    Nicol played for five Liverpool managers and made 468 appearances, scoring 46 goals. Overall he won four League titles and three FA Cup winners medals before becoming a player coach at Notts County in 1995.

    2:52 Jesus Christ look at the state of that pitch.
    And yes, I too am here because of ESPN FC. The man could play and scored some very nice goals over a lengthy and very successful career with the Reds. Now I know why he has such a deep connection when he speaks of the club on the show as he was more than just a player but a stalwart for LFC during the 80s and early 90s. Kudos to him.

      Because of the way modern football went and everyone assigned a role and almost have to stick to it, difficult for a modern Steve Nicol. When he went forward, Ronnie Whelan would cover his position. If a coach doesn't allow that kind of freedom, then it's more difficult for a full back like Steve Nicol to get into goal scoring positions. Having said that Nicol actually scored a number of goals playing midfield, he didn't always play full back.

    To see a Defender goals like this is awesome.
    If you compare how he scored goals by heading and chipping the ball over the goalie to today’s players, you need to question what they are practicing in the training sessions.
    They can’t head a ball, the can’t hit a ball volley, and they don’t chip the ball over the goalie.
    The sad thing is that you see this behavior in all leagues on the globe.
    The only explanation is, someone must teach this to young managers this crap on the academy’s.

    surprising and great to see how much touch Stevie had in and around the box. But two things:
    1) anyone make a video of his complete game? he was a defender...and given how much he and his old(ish) heads talk about how bad defending is in the "modern game" you'd think that would be most of this highlight. or at least ANY of it?
    🤨😑 and speaking of defending....
    2) plenty of "shockers" in this highlight. He's running free in the box in most of these. Free headers galore. Optional defending everywhere. I'm not surprised. From the NBA gasbags all over media to their counterparts in soccer, there's a whole lot of chest thumping about shttt that never was. the eye in the sky don't lie.

    Shocking to see how much space players were given 30-40 years ago. This is League 2 caliber.

    • @deise5989
      @deise5989 Год назад +5

      1) Teams didn't play 11 men behind the ball like many of them do today - that's a major reason. If a lower division team came to play a top team in the FA cup in those days for example you might see it but you wouldn't see teams in the top division with 11 players in their own half of the field like you do today. Even the good teams do it today when they don't have the ball. When you play in half of the field, then you have half the space. It doesn't make the game any better and generally speaking the same # of goals are scored in games today as there were back then.
      2) In today's game you see large numbers of players all close to the ball because of things like the 'pressing' game which is more of a modern phenomenon in the game. In many ways it reminds me of how we played the game in the schoolyard as kids when everyone mindlessly followed the ball around and didn't keep their positions because we all wanted to get a kick of the ball.
      It's all relative. These players were on a way different level to League 2 players.
