Two words. Chicken Wire. You go back to the old plaster and lathe days and you will find that they put chicken wire up over the lathe for the plaster to adhere to. Without structure for it to cling to, it will just slide away from the plastic bags.

I was a lather for a living, and when we patched up holes in old plaster we put metal lath over the hole first so the plaster would have something to bond over the hole. I'm thinking it might help to try that over your torn bags before patching over the torn bags. I would patch over the loose dirt with screen and attach it with nails long enough to hold it in place until you patched it with Cobb. I hope that was helpful, we love watching you and Jess build 😉

Suggestion for the colder season, now that the hallway doors are down, that area will allow in some colder air in the winter. Living in Northern New England, we sometimes use old wool blankets to block off a door way. I have done this several times, it always seems to work well, and at very little cost. A few nails to hold the blanket up is simple, then when its warmer, no need for the blanket any longer.

I think I’ve seen rocket stoves with a less upright feeding entrance .
I for sure have seen them under a thirty to forty five degree angle and I think I even seen some simply going in sideways.
I think it helps if you can start the fire more towards or into the chimney that’s standing inside of the barrel to get that draft going sucking in air from the feeding side pushing smoke out of the chimney.
I would try some different angles of the wood feeding “tube/ entrance” and start the fire more into the upright chimney that’s in the barrel to initially get the draft going.

Congrats on your progress! I know nothing about rocket heaters but the ones I have seen before used a horizontal fuel feed chamber. That seems like it would be much easier to clean than a vertical feed chamber. They also used a removable horizontal grate to make 2 levels to the feed chamber. The fuel was placed on top while air could flow in below. As the fuel burned, the ashes would drop down. It allowed more complete combustion of the fuel.

I think the draft would much better if the flue stack outside was much higher towards the roof line of the house. Cold air is drawn to the bottom and hot air outside... How is you combustion air into the house coming along? I suggest your next test would be worth opening the front door to allow air into the dome to see the difference... Your airflow for combustion of fuel needs to be reviewed.

Rocket stove, idea is great, if your trying to smoke out anything that wants to live in your dome. Trust me I tried one my Niece had installed in a Yurt, & had to knock out a hole in glass ceiling, & the wall to get out the soot, & smoke. Try anything else for a wood stove, with chimney going straight up through roof. Add a solar powered fan to force hot air out through bench,& barrel, & also vent cold air in with alternate venting piping, & valving. Good luck! 🙏

I heated with only a full size brick fireplace in the living room and on the back side a wood burning free standing stove in the dining room for just over 25 years and the basic math to anything that burns in the interior of a structure is when there is no fire in a chimney or flue pipe air will suck down into the room, when a fire is burning obviously the draft reverses and sucks air up and out proving the theory hot air rises the hotter the faster. For this reason is why it is important to take 2 or 3 pieces of newspaper to then place just inside the flue pipe or chimney opening and light, as the paper burns the flash heat will suck the burning paper up into the chimney that will start the hot air pulling upward then immediately light your wood. This process is primming the flu and will stop the initial smoke from back blowing into the room just before you light the actual wood. Hope this helps

Your house is going to be so COOL! We did a do it yourself two story earth berm house 45 years ago, I wish I had known about dome earth bags back then👍👍My husband and I had a underground utility construction company and I can give you a little tip about your root cellar. We had 4 very large precast storm drain boxes we set for our root cellar. I don't know If you ever saw a successful earth bag cellar? The ground has pressure and will push in on any weak void. What can I say ground just wants to move especially when wet. I know you'd think the desert would be dry we are in western Texas, but it can and will rain eventually. Your bags had no chicken wire or rebar and I think in time if there is no concrete backfill that cellar will fail. That would be bad above and below, it will crack and creep without a better plan, what ever you put in the ground needs a good water proofing, concrete cracks can seep water like crazy. Build safe my friend I don't want to have to worry about you.

As folks have been saying, the chimney outside needs to be taller. The more open air space it has, the better it will draw. On my house the chimney rises a fair bit above the peak of the roof. I think that if you can get the outside chimney up through lip roof above it, you will both avoid staining of the outside wall but also it will make the draw much more efficient.

My guess on what's happening with the air flow: I'd bet that the dome is heating up enough that there's an updraft towards the ceiling, where you do have some vents to let the hot air out, but when that goes, the atmospheric pressure in the room falls, and the piping in the mass heater system is an opening to the outside, so that's why it's pulling air through there. Basically the same principle as the traditional windcatchers. But I could be wrong.
