This is the most unique home build on uTube that I have seen. Everything is so strange -everything. The wondrously beautiful landscape, the furry dogs from colder climes, the growing pits, the obsession with water so strong that I find myself cheering when there is extra going into the underground tank and the whole bag house thing and the that - peculiar mass heater. You are so doggedly persistent that I feel an ache of worry for you if things fail. You are two amazing people following their dream. I’m with you and wishing you all the best.
Most people don’t realize that’s how it works. I’ve also been told it helps to have comments posted, and respond to.others comments. Even if it’s just a “ ❤️ “ or a “ yup” or a like on the comments
It's always a lot of work for the two of you. I am methodical in how I d things as well. I reuse everything possible and find uses for everything. I recycle everything and compost even my junk mail.
Yall are just so fun to watch, what a dynamic yall have that is clearly evident in your videos. Wonderful life yall are building, I mean what other honorable endeavors are there for humans besides making a home and life for one's self. Fan freaking tastic...
Hey Jim and Jess and Peter, your stove is coming along nicely. Before long you will have all the hot air you want, just in time for the hot summer season. Lol Good thing about it is you can warm it up inside each day after you've put up fresh cob. That way you can start right where you left off. I'm excited to see how well your rocket stove works.
Jim cool project you got going on with the Rocket Mass Heater and those barrels.I like how your resourceful with nature and man made objects you are.I have wood stove and I have touched up my stove with a high heat paint before.I’m curious will you be dressing up your Rocket Mass Heater after you’ve gotten the old paint off.
Good to see something on the interior walls. I’m watching your process. I have started a sand bag shed. Regretting I went as large as I did tired at 1/3 complete.
For those that are looking for good metal 55 gallon drum barrels for their greenhouse or their rocket mass stove the best ones to use to hold water and nut rust out is these metal barrels with fish oil in it? Fish oil is a very common oil that prevents metal from rusting I use these kind of metal barrels with a little bit of fish oil in the water in my solar pass through greenhouse before I switch to metal barrels that held fish oil in it I actually use just metal barrels with food safe capability so if you do not plan on using it to store water for drinking like I said, use these metal barrels with fish oil and water
I have used borax for an eye 20:0620:08 wash, used to be able to buy borax at the drugstore and put it in a little glass eye cup, that they sold to help with irritations !!
Hey Jim, you sure got Jess’s attention on that. Woo hooo oh yeahhhhh😂😂😂. Little reminder stay away from fumes that those cans let off. They’re very carcinogenic until all paint is removed. If I’m not mistaken that’s an imron paint The health hazards (permanent brain, liver and lung damage) are serious, and require professional level protection against lung and skin Be very careful little brother
you may want to put a heat shield between the barrel and the cob wall....even though it is not combustable, you don't want the plastic behind the cob to melt (that barrel gets SUPER hot)
@@ourselfreliantlife yah, probably not important...... unless there is a compromise in the cob layer (as you are repairing now). What is the affect on cob by long term extreme heat.....and it is EXTREME!

For every scoop of earth, one needs at least two scoops of aggregate. Or its going to keep cracking. When I say minimum. Some earth had so much clay, that the ratio can be 1 to 4.
That does look awful close to the wall. I know your going to cover it with cobb but could burn the hay in the cobb or worse yet, melt the plastic bags. Just my thoughts. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it, Jim.
now your doing it . dont know why you wanted to cut a hole in the top of the barrel . its going to be way better sealed and hold more heat kinda lol . i say kinda cause its going to push and pull air so the heat will move threw it as well . where your main heat will come from is the storage of heat in the mass you build be it a couch like bench of sorts or what ever . i see alot of people who have put up videos use tiny pea gravel and others use a mix of both pea and larger stones . i really think the mix of both is better . but i cant really say as i have never seen or built one . but it would make sense that a large stone will hold heat longer . but it might not matter once its all sealed in . ether way its going to be nice on cold days and fun to play with . your main problem is going to be where are you going to get fuel from . i guess old pallets and brush . maybe you can find a way to use wood pellets . or maybe you know what your going to use and will share your ideas with us at some point . but what ever it is it is not going to be very easy to get . you wont be able to depend on fuel from your land . you might be able to make a oil burner and get used cooking grease from local restaurants but thats kinda dangerous and messy . i just dont see how your going to make this work long term with out sourcing out side help with fuel .
Back in 60, we built a house on pea gravel. The plenum, and tiles were set and buried in the pea gravel. Then reinforced concrete over it all. The gas furnace heated our foundation and floors, as well as the rooms. Floors were heating the room, after the furnace shut off. Pea gravel is great, because it settles the least, under concrete, and for heating purposes.
@@everettplummer9725 thats nice to know . sounds like a great place to live as well . i dont understand why people dont use these kind of heating systems here in the north . or at least i have never seen one here and im over 50 years old . we get some brutal winters here with temps below - 15 degrees f . you would think people here would love them .
Barrell burning seems toxic but that’s the point. Don’t want a toxic stove in the house. Just a tad worried about Jim breathing that for however long even outside. Seems less than ideal.
I dearly hate cold weather. Take to long to get warm up. Than it does to get cool down. I can with stand heat better. Idk how they can live up North? in -25 deg weather all winter long? 🥶🥶
Thanks for watching y'all!

Why did you put that oil in your compost now you can't use the compost for your garden
@@marymccowan6629 uh, I assumed it was food oil? Those looked like the cooking oil barrels that you can get here in NY, too.
I like the format of having the ads at the beginning of the video. I can read the comments while waiting. Always watch the commercials,

I sure am looking forward to the finished product. I thought my mind was good at conceiving concepts but this one has me rattled 🤣.
Yeah, for the Rocket Mass!!!😊🎉❤
Great progress Jim and Jess! Keep er up!
Love to see that section of inside wall cobbed! You two are so fun. Jesse love that shirt your a beautiful as ever!!
Thank you!!
Maybe do the wall behind the the heater first?
I was waiting for them to do that too.
I think it will end up being enclosed with the stove because that is what I would do. Probably.
Good going me and my family enjoy watching

A wee bit north, nothing budding yet. Daffodils poking up though

Heating/cooling with a solar panel powered fan

You can use the old barrels for planters.
It’s coyote proof, I can see 1000 uses for it
What about using the unused barrels as raised garden or planters?
Maybe! Also, we're thinking of possibly a fire pit.

What kind of oil was that in the barrel? Reddish color almost looked like ATF. But then it seemed darker?
My question too. Was the put in the human Ure pile? Confused...
It's not actually oil in there.
I knew you wouldn’t pollute your home!
I’m sure everyone knows you can take used motor oil to a jiffy lube and get it recycled

Please tell me those first barrels aren't Galvanized?

With all that wind, why not a wind generator? You could use an automotive alternator, just need to make it spin.

@@kurtcurtis2730 I hope it's a good one, that barrel can hit 800 deg
Boric acid also is poisonous to roaches so as long as it stays dry it will work for that too… fine and dandy.
