Endless Off-Grid Fuel on the Homestead - Biogas Part #1
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 окт 2023
- We built a machine to make us endless off-grid fuel on the homestead. Also known as a bio-digester, "Big Murph" turns organic homestead waste into methane (natural gas). Consider this cycle: grass consumes CO2, the cow eats grass and turns it into cow pies, the digester turns cow pies into methane, we burn the methane to power our homestead and it turns back into CO2....which feeds the grass!

*** PRO TIP ***
Add 1% by volume of vegetable oil to the digester. The methanogens coat themselves with the oil. This protects them from the sulphuric acid produced. You should get an increase in production from 54% to above 70%. Also, by using manure from ruminant animals, you will be able to digest cellulose items like leaves and paper.
Add some way to gently stir the digester tank. Flow your gas from the digester through cold water before storing it. This will remove most of the CO2 and sulphuric oxide. Stay safe. You're playing with a flammable gas.
Laughing out loud 😅😅😂😂😂
Shouldn’t the water contain a bit of lithium hydroxide so that the carbon dioxide will become lithium carbonate in solution?
@@michaelchownyk5255 - is that so the effluent can be used to make a cottage Li-Ion storage hut (jk) - or serious comment)
My comment is serious and I mean it. If you blow exhaled air through a glass full of sodium hydroxide, it will slowly form sodium carbonate in solution, same with lithium hydroxide. The goal is to get the gas to be mostly flammable so that would mean to exclude carbon dioxide. How else would you do it and I’m not joking
@@michaelchownyk5255 lol nice . Question why do we need it to be more flammable ? To run somthing else I'm not aware of.? Far as I know with carbon dioxide in the biogas it still runs stove or engine . I'm sincerely wondering 🤔
I know a thing or two about methane production and learned one really important tidbit that I feel compelled to share. I mean, it is great you turn cow pies and horse apples into methane. And it is great to see you open the falve and burn some. BUT, have you ever heard of a check valve (aka butterfly valve or a one way valve)? You can get them for all levels of desired pressures. But the beauty of it is that if you happen to be literally burning it for heat and or cooking and or running a generator and you suddenly run out of enoough pressure, you can cause a flame to go all the way back to your tank and it can do even more than what thosde little bottles of ignited gas did. And TRUST ME, you DO NOT WANT THAT TO HAPPEN!!. In other words, been there, done that. Back in the 70s, built a system using 55 gal drums to make the gas. And if you add 1/4th green to the poo ratio and establish a stiring mechanical to stir the batch and you will get a lot more gas. Fortunately I had my barrel set in the ground so all they did was blow their tops one cool night and everyone was burning their stove ovens to heat with as it was late summer and we did not expect it to get so cold so sudden. No one was injured but it sure scared the blazes out of us all. And the fire marshall who showed up (the blast was heard a good 20 miles away) listened to what my system was and then he stopped me and asked "one question son, have EVER heard of a check valve?" We were outside and you could have heard a pin drop till I finally said"Uhhh, no. What is that?" BTW, my systems with their check valves are still working just fine out there in california. I am about to build a system here in Missouri for our home. BTW, you can use it to weld with just as you would using propane and oxygen. Even cut metal.
Thank you for sharing your story. Cheers.
I call BS. The only way for the digester to explode is for there to be enough oxygen in it. There should be no air inside the digester otherwise it will kill the anaerobic bacteria necessary to produce the gas in the first place.
That’s great advice. You also need to be aware of the H2S produced during this process. You cannot see it and if it is really strong, you will not smell it. The gas is heavier than air so be careful about low spots or enclosed buildings.
What is the "*green (add 1/4th green to the poo ratio)"?
Also something called 'Flashback Arrestor
Blowing shit up with your Dad, precious memories.....that is true quality time.
Yeah, I remember blowing stuff up as a kid in the 50s and losing hair on various parts of my head and body. And then they invented safety equipment.
about 20 years ago a buddy of mine built a 5000 gallon digestor on his father-in-laws hog farm ( along with my help as general labor). my buddy had 2 degrees-1 of biology and 2 of solid waste management. at that time his FiL was lagooning the hog waste in a containment pond. we put in a small tank between the hog barn and the pond and ran a 3 inch pipe from the tank to another larger upright tank of about 4500 gallons then ran a pipe from the bottom of that tank to the digestor. the pipe had a grinder/pump to reduce any waste size and to fill the upright tank. we let it set and settle for about a week, then let gravity feed it into and fill the digestor. if i remember right my buddy had built the digestor as a big bladder type of rubber/poly type stuff. he said he would use fresh, unprocessed cow stomachs he'd buy from a slaughterhouse to supersharge a get the digestor started producing gas. the gas was then ran thru a water bath then thru charcoal to a tank. we pressurized it to about 5 psi, then ran it thru a fuelcell to produce electricity. about once a week that summer we would go out to drain a couple thousand gallons out thru a sieve system- any leftover solids were then piled in a compost pile and the water was sent back to the containment pond. then we'd refill the digestor from the upright tank. this worked quite well. the FiL was able to sell excess energy back to the grid and the extra gas was used to heat his hog barns.
This is what environmentalists need to be doing. Not being dumb ass commies
All of it is genius but the fuel cell is a smart addition. A bit of an investment in labor and a lot of low cost reward. That's awesome. Thank you for the idea.
Anaerobic digesters were widely used on farms back in the 1920's to early 1950's. Yes it's methane, nitrogen and a few other gasses, be sure to minimize air from getting into the digester (especially when feeding it) and lines /connections, for safety have a flame arrestor at the tank outlet and at the exhaust (stove connection or whatever), horse manure is fine but low in nitrogen and considered a "cold" manure, cow, chicken and hog manure in that order are "hot" manures and higher in nitrogen, as for other feed stock outside manure you'll want to grind or shred it because doing so creates greater surface area per unit of volume causing more efficient digestion. One final note he slurry at the bottom is PERFECT for putting back on the grow beds so you'll want to have a method for collecting it such as an outlet at the bottom of the digester. Have fun!!
Father a good teacher teaches and training his daughters to be self sufficient living off grid in the remote forest of Canada. He nothing left which there daughters are not trained. In every field his daughters are experts 😂😂 A blessed family...who never complains 🙏🙏🙏🙏🌺🌺🌺🌺 love and greetings from India.....
You forgot to mention, 'Do not try this at home!' Keep having fun guys and bringing it to us!
Because everyone should try this at home and be more self sufficient
I’m really looking forward to part 2. I want to see just how you plan on safely transferring the methane to bottles, storing and using it!
@@SalmonKing52ive seen a video of a guy using an air compressor to transfer the bio gas from an air mattress to a propane tank
He's an amateur who literally tried it at home.
Loved the 15:00 mark comment "... those will grow back!!!"
A friend of mine who is a mechanic/inventor used pig manure and pie pans placed on top of his dry carburetor to run his pickup back in the 80's. Worked well but he didn't have enough pig manure to continue his research and went on to other things. Considering he only had one pig and he produced enough "gas" to go over a mile it was a good experiment.
That was all something akin to lighting farts... which we all recognize as prime entertainment.
😝
hello to all the little family. hello mrs "big murph"
he idea of making your own gas with organic waste is very good, especially like you off the grid.. you could make two one for the house and another to heat the greenhouse in winter, I don't know in which regions of the usa you are, but heating the greenhouse in winter if it's free and eco. it can work.. after that you may have to improve the configuration of the installation (non-return valves the right balance between cow poop and water etc etc there are some who have already done it off the grid and it works for the gas cooker for water heater etc and even some have done it to heat the greenhouse in winter.. well done and continue.. but be careful with the flames and the blowtorch and firecrackers when you are next to the installation of "mrs big murph" otherwise it's free eyebrow waxing for all...lol
(already known technique but practical.. with the gas of mrs "big murph" heat water which with a small water pump ferrais circulates this water in pipes underground water pump which resists hot water in 12 volts [on aliexpress for example, there are correct resistant models] which would work on 1 12 volt car battery or made with 18650 [there are ready-made batteries or I advise to do it yourself by buying on aliexpress / other site the card the 18650 and small accessories you will have a battery which can be recharged up to 3000 times and with a good amperage the pump and the orticole led lights could work on it..and small solar panel 50/100/200watts and its charge controller
all this is not very expensive if smart but above all allows you to do lots of things to improve life off the grid, like having water on tap or shower with a small water pump for less than 10/20 euros have light with LED strips or 12 volt LED bulbs or with small fans in 5/7/9/12 volts make air extractors to avoid mold in the cabin.. have motion detectors to avoid crossing a bear or a stupid thief (lol but you get the idea lol) in short now with all this technology and their prices which have fallen a lot, we can improve our daily lives off the grid or camping hiking etc etc and I would even say in the city to save money on CO2 and other 220 volts wood diesel or nuclear.. sorry for the headache.. see you later, big kisses from the south of France..
"That looks like a bad idea".....no truer words have been said.
I busted out laughing at @ 1:20 "Let's take a minute, and think about what we've done" hahaha
you guys are crazy but I love it. Look forward to part 2 and keep up the great off grid pioneering work for the tribe
3:24 this is Theraputic 😂😂😂😂😂❤
🥰🥰🥰 You guys are living the best life ever 🥰🥰🥰
Keep up the amazing work 🤩🤩🤩
Add you water to the poo and stir with a stick before pouring it in. Fantastic idea. You should have free cooking, free heat, free fuel, and free fertilizer when it’s done digesting. On a larger scale you could power all of your house, shop, and greenhouse for totally free. Fantastic idea
I would love to live next to you, maybe fifteen miles distance.
@@JerseyRed 😂😂😂😂😂 Make it 30 miles for safety sake
Saludos a todos esperó 🙂 estenbien Julia k chica tan talentosa saludos a mamá 🌹 rosa jajaja espero k le crezcan pronto las pestañas a kezia jajaja cuidense mucho bendiciones bonito video
Omg I can hear the safety Sally's already. 😂😂 This is the kind of stuff we did as kids and nobody ever died. Whats a few eyelashes for fun factor. But besides that, this is a great way to fuel a cooker or whatever else you can think of. They've been doing this in Africa for a long time using cow hide bladders for a tank. Can't wait to see where you go with this.
More than 50 years ago, Popular Mechanics magazine had an article of how to collect the methane in an innertube from a barrel of poop, and pipe it to your house to cook supper with it. All the drawings and details were there, so I guess this generation has to re-learn all of this! SR
you and your family are fun to follow along with. keep having fun ya'll!!
Your kids are very lucky to have you as their dad❤ that’s amazing…&awesome ways to get your kids engaged&spend good quality time together! Lol
Far to much fun being had during this educational section may I add. So awesome thanks for sharing !
I’m really looking forward to part 2.
Hopefully you’ll show how to properly (and safely) transfer and store this for home use!
Why not use a refrigerator compressor to pull the gas from the inner tube and compress it into air or propane tanks?
You're literally one of the coolest dads ever.. 👏
i just can't stop watching this videos...
And the view behind you guys. The trees, the gradient blue from pale to cobalt ❤
As a lifelong horse girl, and I'm kinda old, LOL, the best way to describe horse manure is....wait for it...the Champagne of Manures! It doesn't smell bad, especially when compared to ruminant poop, or chicken poop. It is neatly deposited in round pieces, perfect for sifting the wood shavings bedding out of it.
Most horses will keep their stalls neat, pooping in the opposite corner from where their hay is, unless you are a slob and don't pick their stalls regularly. My horses learn to go outside if their back doors are open into their paddocks. But, alas, the do love to pee in the shavings in their stalls - no splashing! And that is my take on horse manure! :) I love your channel, and really appreciate the way your live and the way your kids are so well rounded. And that horses are a part of that! Excellent!
You guys are too much. What a fun family, that was cool.
OK I don’t laugh very often but I love to laugh. This is Hass to be the funniest thing on RUclips. It’s gotta go viral whoever you are you’re the funniest guy out there and I love your wife because she’s just laughing along and I love your spirit, cause you just rolling with it.
Rose is so cool! Your family is the best.
Glad you're raising well rounded ladies
another great video gridlessness!!! thanks for sharing! much love from vancouver island!
I suggest finding copies of the Sacramento Wastewater Manuals. Somewhere in there are detailed operations for anaerobic digesters. Grab a cheap drywall mud mixer for your drill to mix the buckets. Also develop some way to stir the digestor. You need to get the fresh manure in contact with the bugs.
Thanks 4 this video. Very useful.
Beautiful! Living life free! Respect.
Yes! I've been waiting for this big Murphy info!
I just found your channel and subscribed. You’ve made me laugh while being informative.
One of my friends has one of those digestors and it needs way more poop than you think to run a household but it really works. He dug a hole similar to a septic tank. Digesters Gass went into a big sleeve and then you pressurise it by putting old tyres on the sleeve. You need 4 or 5 cows pooping down the hole.
How did he train them to poop down the hole? That’s genius!
@@Gridlessnesslol
What a nice family. I wish I had one like that. :)
This is very cool I love your resourcefulness. Totally bad ass ! You need to explain to the viewers the process of how it all works. Maybe on part 2 ?
Good idea!
@Gridlessness Be careful utube might take down your videos..
❤️
Hence the term “natural” gas! Very nice chemistry lesson!
I've watched a few of ya'lls videos this week, ya'll have it going on. The girls I believe could survive a hurricane here in Florida...lol 😂😅 Love what ya'll are doing ❤
great idea and sustainable... fun times 🤪
Lucky girls to have. Cool Dad!!!!😇😁
best video on the topic, mate ... hahaha
great fun, thanks !!
this video aint a desaster ... you look like a fun farm dad and you have my like !
In the early 80s I was in Korea in the Army and most all houses cooked and heated with methane. They all had a fenced concrete backyard slab that they kept pigs in, and up close to the house was a concrete slab covering a concrete pit with clear plastic lines that run into the house to supply methane where it was needed.
It's so nice to watch this makes me happy
Poor Rose she has to be on pins and needles just wondering if her girls or homestead is going to blow up🤣🤣😜😂
What an AWESOME family!!
to much fun!!! good job
WOW that looks like so much fun! 😀
If ever you find yourself near the Montreal area, there is a center called Complexe Enviro Progressive, It's a dumpsite that pretty much converts, livestock waste and byproducts into natural gas somewhat like you are doing but on a much much much grander scale, they do guided tours which is actually rather interesting.
Love this channel, just keeps getting better

well...she's definitely your daughter 😅I love it when you tell Rose how much you love her 😊 you just need to produce more videos!!
The burn test shows how clean it is 👍
Oh WOW ~ fantastic 👍🏻🙋🏼♀️❤️😎
I've seen the same with leaves & decomposing sticks. There is also a method using a second septic tank.
The opening camera work is academy award quality
you sir { and big Murph } just renewed my faith in humanity, I think we are going to make it after all. Now if you can turn those Road Apples into potato pancakes we'd have it in the bag, and that sounds better than the Crickets and mealworms their trying to make us eat
You guys are awesome
That's a lot of bovine feces. Reminds me of the guacamole I had yesterday. 😂🤣
That was awesome!
Awesome video once again! 👍❤️😎
❤ thanks for sharing
For the stoichiometric ratio it is one part methane too two parts oxygen gas.
If you use a thin copper wire from a cut extension cord and twisted around the ends of the thicker wire, you can just plug it into an outlet for a quick detonation . Use 100 foot extension cord so that you’re far away from it.
It's funny, the girls are like 3 little versions of Rose telling Jeff not to blow the house up.
Reminds me of what they do in acorn land labs very cool stuff
Your a dad like me. Thank you for that
A lot of work , great sound just as fun as potato gun. lol they will grow back. yes part two.
Love that stuff ! Great experiment !
I love it. And hope someday becomes homesteader
Great stuff!
Can’t wait for video “Number 2” 😂. All jokes aside the first video was “Good shit” 😂😂
Love everything you Rose and your beautiful daughters do up there! ❤
You are a really fun dad.
Man you must have the most patient, tolerant family in the world. Greatly enjoyed the video. Carry on. As I am sure you will. hahaha
I have a small hho cell that I put into the squeeze smart water bottles with the flip top to make diy rockets. With a larger set up you can make a cutting torch gas.
Hands down that was the funniest thing I've seen for awhile 🤣😁
Excellent idea 👍. We have a local landfill that covers the trash and then later taps and uses the gas that it produces.
Where is this ? Probably not Canada :)
It is in Edmonton clover bar power station @@christineford6763

Great video guys
Well... you all are having too much fun! When I was growing up, we could buy explosives in the hardware store without anyone asking what it was for.
I had an amazing childhood and all of my body parts are still intact. My ears are still ringing, though, but it was worth every moment!
Hair and eyelashes do grow back. Lol
This is the first video I am watching from you guys.
I just subscribed.
Welcome!
Check out the biosphere that was in az, they produced all the methane to sustain their living enclosed in the biosphere for a year, cooking and heating
Wow. so awesome.
I just found you guys. My first video to see! Oh my! I laughed so hard I almost peed myself! Yummy! I’m your new sub! You earned it!
I love how laid back your girls are and they give you that look like .....dad😒

Good shit team, 💪off grid even more 👏
For a safe way to compress the glass, if you got the height, a trompp setup would be best, or look at Cody's lab as how he did his methane pump
This was such a fun video! 😂👏🏻
This works. Some european pig farms do this. Liquify the poo before pouring it in.
Never thought you can have so much fun with FART!
Thanks again
You should make a hot Dave commercial and cover him in methane bubbles..
I’ll ask him and see what he thinks about that!
"bucket of the good stuff" funny!
Pee and poop, both underrated and NECESSARY!
Cow farts.. Every farmer knows about this wonderful by-product.. 🐂💩 = gas =💥
