Endless Off-Grid Fuel on the Homestead - Biogas Part #1

  • We built a machine to make us endless off-grid fuel on the homestead. Also known as a bio-digester, "Big Murph" turns organic homestead waste into methane (natural gas). Consider this cycle: grass consumes CO2, the cow eats grass and turns it into cow pies, the digester turns cow pies into methane, we burn the methane to power our homestead and it turns back into CO2....which feeds the grass!

    *** PRO TIP ***
    Add 1% by volume of vegetable oil to the digester. The methanogens coat themselves with the oil. This protects them from the sulphuric acid produced. You should get an increase in production from 54% to above 70%. Also, by using manure from ruminant animals, you will be able to digest cellulose items like leaves and paper.
    Add some way to gently stir the digester tank. Flow your gas from the digester through cold water before storing it. This will remove most of the CO2 and sulphuric oxide. Stay safe. You're playing with a flammable gas.

      Shouldn’t the water contain a bit of lithium hydroxide so that the carbon dioxide will become lithium carbonate in solution?

      @@michaelchownyk5255 - is that so the effluent can be used to make a cottage Li-Ion storage hut (jk) - or serious comment)

      @michaelchownyk5255 7 месяцев назад +2

      My comment is serious and I mean it. If you blow exhaled air through a glass full of sodium hydroxide, it will slowly form sodium carbonate in solution, same with lithium hydroxide. The goal is to get the gas to be mostly flammable so that would mean to exclude carbon dioxide. How else would you do it and I’m not joking

    • @mattg6472
      @mattg6472 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@michaelchownyk5255 lol nice . Question why do we need it to be more flammable ? To run somthing else I'm not aware of.? Far as I know with carbon dioxide in the biogas it still runs stove or engine . I'm sincerely wondering 🤔

    I know a thing or two about methane production and learned one really important tidbit that I feel compelled to share. I mean, it is great you turn cow pies and horse apples into methane. And it is great to see you open the falve and burn some. BUT, have you ever heard of a check valve (aka butterfly valve or a one way valve)? You can get them for all levels of desired pressures. But the beauty of it is that if you happen to be literally burning it for heat and or cooking and or running a generator and you suddenly run out of enoough pressure, you can cause a flame to go all the way back to your tank and it can do even more than what thosde little bottles of ignited gas did. And TRUST ME, you DO NOT WANT THAT TO HAPPEN!!. In other words, been there, done that. Back in the 70s, built a system using 55 gal drums to make the gas. And if you add 1/4th green to the poo ratio and establish a stiring mechanical to stir the batch and you will get a lot more gas. Fortunately I had my barrel set in the ground so all they did was blow their tops one cool night and everyone was burning their stove ovens to heat with as it was late summer and we did not expect it to get so cold so sudden. No one was injured but it sure scared the blazes out of us all. And the fire marshall who showed up (the blast was heard a good 20 miles away) listened to what my system was and then he stopped me and asked "one question son, have EVER heard of a check valve?" We were outside and you could have heard a pin drop till I finally said"Uhhh, no. What is that?" BTW, my systems with their check valves are still working just fine out there in california. I am about to build a system here in Missouri for our home. BTW, you can use it to weld with just as you would using propane and oxygen. Even cut metal.

      I call BS. The only way for the digester to explode is for there to be enough oxygen in it. There should be no air inside the digester otherwise it will kill the anaerobic bacteria necessary to produce the gas in the first place.

    • @PaulRittell
      @PaulRittell 4 месяца назад +6

      That’s great advice. You also need to be aware of the H2S produced during this process. You cannot see it and if it is really strong, you will not smell it. The gas is heavier than air so be careful about low spots or enclosed buildings.

    about 20 years ago a buddy of mine built a 5000 gallon digestor on his father-in-laws hog farm ( along with my help as general labor). my buddy had 2 degrees-1 of biology and 2 of solid waste management. at that time his FiL was lagooning the hog waste in a containment pond. we put in a small tank between the hog barn and the pond and ran a 3 inch pipe from the tank to another larger upright tank of about 4500 gallons then ran a pipe from the bottom of that tank to the digestor. the pipe had a grinder/pump to reduce any waste size and to fill the upright tank. we let it set and settle for about a week, then let gravity feed it into and fill the digestor. if i remember right my buddy had built the digestor as a big bladder type of rubber/poly type stuff. he said he would use fresh, unprocessed cow stomachs he'd buy from a slaughterhouse to supersharge a get the digestor started producing gas. the gas was then ran thru a water bath then thru charcoal to a tank. we pressurized it to about 5 psi, then ran it thru a fuelcell to produce electricity. about once a week that summer we would go out to drain a couple thousand gallons out thru a sieve system- any leftover solids were then piled in a compost pile and the water was sent back to the containment pond. then we'd refill the digestor from the upright tank. this worked quite well. the FiL was able to sell excess energy back to the grid and the extra gas was used to heat his hog barns.

    Anaerobic digesters were widely used on farms back in the 1920's to early 1950's. Yes it's methane, nitrogen and a few other gasses, be sure to minimize air from getting into the digester (especially when feeding it) and lines /connections, for safety have a flame arrestor at the tank outlet and at the exhaust (stove connection or whatever), horse manure is fine but low in nitrogen and considered a "cold" manure, cow, chicken and hog manure in that order are "hot" manures and higher in nitrogen, as for other feed stock outside manure you'll want to grind or shred it because doing so creates greater surface area per unit of volume causing more efficient digestion. One final note he slurry at the bottom is PERFECT for putting back on the grow beds so you'll want to have a method for collecting it such as an outlet at the bottom of the digester. Have fun!!

    A friend of mine who is a mechanic/inventor used pig manure and pie pans placed on top of his dry carburetor to run his pickup back in the 80's. Worked well but he didn't have enough pig manure to continue his research and went on to other things. Considering he only had one pig and he produced enough "gas" to go over a mile it was a good experiment.

    As a lifelong horse girl, and I'm kinda old, LOL, the best way to describe horse manure is....wait for it...the Champagne of Manures! It doesn't smell bad, especially when compared to ruminant poop, or chicken poop. It is neatly deposited in round pieces, perfect for sifting the wood shavings bedding out of it.
    Most horses will keep their stalls neat, pooping in the opposite corner from where their hay is, unless you are a slob and don't pick their stalls regularly. My horses learn to go outside if their back doors are open into their paddocks. But, alas, the do love to pee in the shavings in their stalls - no splashing! And that is my take on horse manure! :) I love your channel, and really appreciate the way your live and the way your kids are so well rounded. And that horses are a part of that! Excellent!

Grab a cheap drywall mud mixer for your drill to mix the buckets. Also develop some way to stir the digestor. You need to get the fresh manure in contact with the bugs.
