True. I'm trying to go into ux from psychology, and it is tiring to try to teach myself Figma and UI skills while also trying to teach myself more ux-related stuff.

“Your first job is not going to be your last job.” - yes!! A thousand times yes. I feel like people put too much pressure on themselves to find the “perfect” job right out of the gates. These days it’s common to change companies/positions every 1-3 years. People shouldn’t sweat so much about not getting the “perfect” job or role right away. There’s nothing wrong with taking a job that’s a good match that will give you the experience you need to get to that “perfect” job. Well said!

I am currently teaching myself UI/UX, and simultaneously, HTML 5 & CSS, through free online courses.
I love asking a lot of questions too lol. When I came across the UI/UX field, I was also excited that this field existed, because I feel that I will be able to combine my creativity as a photographer, with thinking critically, while developing the way websites & apps function.
I am glad I came across your video right now. Regardless of what I have been learning myself, I was debating whether or not to take a boot camp, but I know that I am more than capable of continuing to teach myself, implement what I am learning, and soon enough land a job.
Thank you for your taking the time to make this video. It gave me some reassurance to keep grinding.

Man, I came across this video this morning. I got frustrated due to my long career as a graphic designer. It's a long story that has led me to this point in my life. I've been learning about UX/UI design and been doing research here and there. Recently got back in contact with a former coworker, and he has been a blessing to point in the right direction. I'm learning the fundamentals of Figma and Adobe XD. I was told to do a few simple projects and upload them onto my online portfolio. This video resonates with me. I thought I was the only person who felt that way about graphic design. Thanks for sharing.

I've been watching a lot of videos about UX design by people who have no previous design experience, but your story was the first that really spoke to me. Ugh, the pain of people wanting design work for super low rates and telling you what to do without trusting your expertise! I'm still not sure if UX is right for me, but I really appreciate your take - it's definitely given my a lot to think about as a former graphic designer. Super helpful, thank you for sharing (:

Really appreciate your perspective and that your vid felt very straightforward and truthful. I’m so glad I found your video. Thank you so much for sharing your story and encouraging us to get ready for the job market before completing a bootcamp. It made me realize why I was stuck with the idea that I HAD to finish my 6-8 months boot camp before getting a job. I recently completed a master's in marketing intelligence, and similar to your experience, I came to the realization that I couldn't continue down that path. However, being an international student, I have decided to finish my studies so I could secure a work authorization in the US.
But as in this life nothing is lost, I learned through my studies how to conduct a lot of research, and with my background in creating visual marketing assets as a marketing professional in the past, I've realized I can leverage all of that to position myself in the field once I get fundamental skills in UX.
Literally today, I was desperate praying I could find a solution because I have only nine months left on my work authorization period to secure a job. I know I have to work really really hard to make it happen in this time-frame, but I am so determined to make this career switch. And seeing the possibilities out there brings so much hope. A thousand times thank you 🙏

Kerwin Ellis, dude first of all thanks for watching the video. Two, thanks for the comment. Also, I hope you subscribe.
I agree, being a graphic designer is hard because it’s hard to find data that explains why this design is better. It’s pretty much my taste vs your taste, but since you are paying me, your taste has to be better.
The fact that you are a designer and a developer you bring a lot to the table. Not only can you design the UI, but you can also build it as well. But UX is not all about building things. It’s about creating the best experience for your users.
I would say it’s never too late to switch careers man. It’s definitely an investment in money and time to make that career change. If you are toying with the idea, just go ahead and do it now. I would start here www.interaction-design.org/. Not a sponsor but a good resource.
      I hope this helps.

wow, honestly i think by now i watched all youtube videos called 'how i became a ux designer' but yours was definitely the one that made me feel energized, optimistic and freaking motivated do just get on with it!!!! (coming from a design background, i was also relieved to hear what you had to say about this)
anyway, i have 2 questions i was curious about:
1- did you apply with the website you showed here? or did you also include old graphic design work?
2- how long did you stay at that first job? did you tell yourself you should stay there one year at least? (cause it looks better in CV?)

Your comments about why being a graphic designer is terrible are so accurate. Going through it now, just can't do it anymore. Everyone thinks they are a designer now. Anyway, great videos, thank you!

You might be misinterpreting the situation. As another designer, I think you got that first job because you already knew the people there. Your name was familiar, you had connections, and they knew you were a good designer who was good to work with. I don't think it was your 1/3 way done portfolio that got you in the door
You were mostly right to quit the boot camp because experience is faaarrr more valuable. But most people aren't gonna get there the way you did

I am single, so I don't have someone who could support me economically as I pursue ux. Still in my job and trying to go into ux (from my psychology background, which isn't irrelevant, at least), doing courses on the side and trying to teaching myself Figma (and some UI, too, because I don't have your graphic design background). Might check out Springboard...which bootcamp there did you do?

Hi, thanks for this video! I've been looking at online bootcamps as well but REALLY don't want to get in more debt. So do you think me taking only the Code Academy intro course and Coursera Calarts UI/UX course is enough to obtain a career in the field?

I have a bit of free time and i was thinking about doing a UX/UI bootcamp. im a bit scared for not being experiencied enough in the desing world but im very interested and motivated. Should i wait to finish my studies or do you recomend doing the bootcamp in paralell. Love your videos btw!

First off all thanks for watching the videos. I would focus on graduating from college and get that real degree first. Don't over do it or over think it. You really don't need to do a bootcamp to get a UX job. It's about experience really. You could just work on your User Experience skills: user research, information architecture, Interviews, facilitating, user flows, maps, journeys, observation, etc. Get a portfolio together, then try to work for a non profit.
Remember you need a bachelors degree to get most jobs.

At some point free can only get you so far. Check out my podcast where I talk about Bootcamps. It might help you.

Out of curiosity, did your portfolio also include your previous graphic design work that was unrelated to UX?

    • @UglyUnicorns
      @UglyUnicorns  2 года назад +1

That would be a no. Do not show work that is not relevant to the job you are applying for. If you were a graphic designer and wanted to be come a UI designer. Do UI work and show that. I don’t want to see logos and brochures. If you did that I would pass on you quick!
