Heyhey :) This is my career-change into UX Design in a nutshell.
I breakdown my calculated process of quitting my full-time government job to pivot into UX Design. I'll create another video to provide details about my decision to self-learn.

I did this last year. I’m 34 though 😅. I spent 6 months learning the theory and software and created a portfolio, applied for a handful of jobs and ended up getting offered the first one I interviewed for. Best decision I’ve made.

@@KuozyMusic Thank you :) I think with UX it is dangled as almost a golden carrot, a career that you don't necessarily need a formal education in that still gets you high salary, almost too good to be true. However it kinda is true! there IS a big demand for UX specialists. Its not easy though, you need to have many hats to approach the problem from different angles. I think though that most of the skills required are to do with soft skills, so how you approach things generally will tell you if you will do well in that field. I love that its so varied, one day im writing a research report then the next im designing wire frames or style guides. Its a great mix.
It was a gamble for sure but for me it certainly paid off. I now have moments, sat at my desk, where i literally say out loud "i love my job" and that is the best feeling in the world!
2 years ago I quit my job to become a front end developer (self-taught). Never regretted it, Now I'm 26 & a developer/tester. Never lose hope & all the best!

@@ZTomiboi Hi Thomas, You are in the right path. Now its better that you do some projects, Using the skills you learnt. I was stuck in "tutorial hell" in the beginning. For beginners now a days its good to have (HTML, CSS, JS (Any one JavaScript framework), Any one backend language (If you're going for Fullstack, Practice APIs since most companies use that now a days. I would not suggest you to quit the job & pursue, In case if you did then that's fine. Networking is very important build connections, Interact with developers, recruiters, managers so that when time comes they would have a recommendation for you. All the best!

I’m only a minute in and omg are we the same person?? Quarter life crisis is a REAL thing. I’m currently learning UX design while at my 9-5. Although I have a degree in Computer Science I notice that this is the field I’m passionate about!
lmaooo omg it is SO REAL. the crazy thing js when it happened, I didn’t process it as my quarter life crisis. But yeah dude, soooo wild. Cudos to you for juggling both your full-time and learning rn. I bet it’s challenging so I admire that. Best of luck on pursuing that passion! it’s great bc not everyone has found their passion yet.

Lool, I just turned 26 and I’m thinking to change my path and study computer science (I’m historian). Quarter life crisis is real. I feel kinda desperate because I really want a change. Something that let me work remotely, you know.
Currently in school for Info Technology and I’m passionate about UX Design/Brand Design trying to see if I can merge it together especially with web design with brands.
What she said about being children of immigrant parents is so true. I also found I personally put so much pressure on myself to be successful to honor my parent's sacrifice, when all they really want is for me to be happy. I recently lost my job and felt like a failure and my dad literally does not care if I am unemployed, he told me to just be happy and enjoy the break, the work will come and when it does you will go back to working and be amazing at it. 30+ years to come to this simple realization.
Don't worry we Asians are blessed with great parents. Don't be disappointed you will definitely find a new job, just consider this as a break. All the best & stay happy. Best will come to you in no time.
wow, tysm for sharing this. it resonates so much with me. first, let me say that your dad is amazing for vocalizing that with you. I haven’t reached that level of words of affirmation with my mom yet since she doesn’t express love through words, mostly food and service haha.
but this is such a strong reminder. thank you so much again for sharing. we can all use some more kindness for ourselves and feel appreciation not indebtedness to our parents. and that is a wholeeeee process
Yes! Happiness 😊 is first. As an immigrant myself with lots of struggles, I know that to be true. Happiness is a descision you make.

@@simplyshama Hi! I'm not the person you asked/responded to, but I am currently an Interaction Design student so I thought I would throw in my two cents.
Interaction Design/User Experience Design/whatever you want to call it (everyone has a different term it seems) is sort of a big amalgamation of several different fields - visual design, graphic design, anthropology, marketing, technical writing, some coding experience can benefit you, sociology, and of course psychology (and probably more!). I have an associate's in psychology, as well as an innate interest in psychology, that I feel has benefited me in my degree.
A lot of people look at UXD and assume that you're just creating interfaces and making things look pretty. That's really only a small part of what you do, though. I would argue that in UXD, research and analysis have greater weight. Essentially, you are tackling how people interact with your product, and even more importantly, WHO is interacting with your product. You do literature reviews, competitive audits, and user research to determine what your user actually needs and who your user actually is, and you build a persona(s) (basically a concrete idea of a fictional user) to work off of.
Bringing it back to psychology, a large part of UXD is understanding how your user thinks. You have to break away from the mindset of a creator and put yourself into the role of your user. UXD is largely a study of human behavior (in some areas it is still call "Human-Computer Interaction" or something similar). So if you have a better understanding of how people operate, how they behave, and what motivates them, you already have a leg up on everyone else.
Additionally, jobs that fall under the UXD category vary wildly. You may being doing something that only involves the research and analysis stages, and may never end up actually designing anything. You might go as far as wireframing, but maybe your job has a separate User Interface department that handles the final design and prototyping. Maybe you only do usability testing, which involves a lot of research and participant testing but nothing to do with design whatsoever. Or maybe you are asked to do it all, from the research, to the design, to the testing, and maybe even some coding. But no matter what position you're in or what task you're given, that psychology experience will help you tremendously.

I quit my 6+ year job a week ago due to it not being creative enough, and ever since I have been freaking out. I hate the insecurity. But after watching your encouraging video, I know I'm not alone, and will keep working towards my creative careers (UX/UI)!

@@courtneyragin2038 I quit the course when I had to round up several people for interviews on the business idea that I had. I live in a rural area and not easy to find people. I didn't realize that this line of work had such human interaction. I wanted something without that. So back to working with kids 😅

@@alipainting You could have done the interviews remotely. A lot better than doing them in person. Twitter was a good place for me to find testers. I am sorry that the interactions turned you away, but I hope that you can get back to it soon. Don't give up!

Great perspective I think that’s what many of us have gone through! I’m still learning and growing in user experience design but I can definitively say this.

I cannot thank you enough for this. I`ve been working with software development, and was feeling extremely unfulfilled because I wasn`t grasping the concepts well enough to keep up with everything. I then discovered UXD after realizing as well that I wasn't really able to be creative. Fortunately I`ve had the opportunity to be able to communicate with designers to kind of help me along, but I feel like self teaching is a path I'm probably going to take, and it will be really interesting to see how your journey goes!

This is a highly specific video that was recommended for me lol I too am about to turn 25 and having some what of a crisis. The combination of the pandemic, the milestone of turning 25, and the loss of a loved one have me questioning why I'm not pursuing my passions. Life is short! Brooo, listen. This is my first *uploaded* video. The video and audio quality is is trash because I recorded 4-5x on my dslr before I raged quit and was like, I'm just going to do one last take on my iphone. Then I spent 18 hrs (no joke) of editing and learning to edit videos on this one haha. It was tryingggg me. At one point, I wanted to chuck my laptop out my window. lmao
BUT! I made it and speaking in front of my camera has gotten easier. I still stumble a lot, but I rehearse what I want to say now.

Thank you kindly for sharing your story! I graduated last year into the pandemic with a degree geared towards themed exepriences-think theme park design. My offer with Disney fell through because of the pandemic, I tried a grad school for that track that was a nightmare, then pivoted to teaching fitness. While the money is fine and I don't hate it, I can tell it's not "IT". I'm often told that a job is a job and that's what hobbies are for, but I genuinely want to feel lit up by work, even with it's obvious worklike traits. While I know every job has it's less fun parts, I feel like I too want to commit the thiccest part of my life to something that feels worth doing. I've been thinking about UX a lot since it is so closely related to themed experiences. There's actually a TON of UX involved with themed experience so I'm really excited and hopeful that I can build on my current skills and acquire new ones! I'm so happy I found your channel and I wish you the best if you haven't already found your way!

Finding this video means really much to me. I've watched a silly amount of videos on RUclips about UX Design and almost every person behind them went to a bootcamp or has a degree of some sort. Financially speaking, I'm not able to give 10k+$ for a bootcamp since I'm still in high school and because of that, I can't devote my time on it as much as I should so I would just waste that money. However, I'm going through a career crisis (a bit early for that isn't it) but every cell of my being knows that I should be doing UXD - and the sooner I start, the better. Anyway, this is becoming way too long... but yeah, thanks for doing this, I subscribed to you immediately and will watch the rest of your videos. Excited to share this journey with someone :)
Hey, this was just a sincere post. Thank you for sharing. It's funny b/c you kind of remind me of myself when I was in high school. I was over-planning my career and already worrying about colleges when I was a freshman. So let me say that from what you're telling me, you have a good head on your shoulders. It sounds like you're responsible in thinking about your future and also about your finances. So congratulations on that.
I'd encourage you to explore UX Design at your own pace. Don't be too hard on yourself if you have a lot going on. Sometimes what happens when we put too much stress into something is, it then becomes less fun and enjoyable. So, continue to explore UXD via youtube videos, you should definitely check out free UXD 101 webinars hosted by a lot of bootcamps now a days (eg. General Assembly is constantly hosting a wide range). And dabble in design software in your free time (eg. Figma and Sketch).
I'm amazed that you're planning ahead this young. I admire that. Keep on going and please keep me posted via the comments in my future videos. I'll definitely remember your screen name and look out for it! Take good care :)

Now this video resonates so much with me because i'm in my third year of Polical Science (bachelor) & i feel like i didn't make the right choice. I'm a creative person who adore editing pictures, making graphic art so I was considering giving up on PS to study Graphic Design or anything related. But I somehow felt like it's too late to change my path, since i'm already in my third year. So i feel so relieved that someone who had a full time job made that decision ! I'm definitely going to make more researches & be more confident in my choice. Thanks for the video !

THANK YOU FOR THIS! I’ve been in marketing for 3 years and I don’t feel fulfilled anymore. I learned about UX last year and felt that it was more suited for me. Currently I am at my marketing job and learning UX by myself online. It’s nice to have someone to relate to on this ❤️
I’m in exactly the same situation as you! I have a degree in journalism and have been working in marketing and communications for the last 4 years. I’m totally not fulfilled with my role, so I’m doing a lot of research into boot camps and reading up on UX before taking the plunge to switch careers! We’ve got this!! 🙏🏾

I'm also a first gen, and I always feel so bad complaining about my job to them. Like, they went through so much for me, and I'm complaining? I hated my uni experience too, but at least I finished. And now I'm so depressed from not being unable to travel full time anymore lol. Sometimes I feel so guilty, but honestly just me being able to make the choice to switch career paths and go back to school is a privilege, and I'm super grateful for that. The sacrifice they made was not made in vain! I will become a UX designer, be location independent, and live all over the world. Speaking it into existence!

This is exactly what I've been looking for, thank you for deciding to make these videos! Please share with us the videos/articles/podcasts that you have been using to learn UXD and ones you have found helpful. I recently graduated college with a degree in Industrial Design and I thought I wanted to be a product designer, but recently realized that I would enjoy UX design way more and I've been trying to learn more about it. Industrial Design/ Product Design are similar to UX Design in a lot of ways since they focus on understanding users, conducting research, and prototyping and iterating. My biggest struggle has been creating a correct portfolio since this was something I was not taught in school, and everyone said that the portfolio is the most crucial part in landing a UX job. I realized that I don't have many UX projects to show since I mainly did physical product design projects as a students, so I've been feeling very stuck and searching to find someone starting from scratch and self learning so I can learn from them. Again thank you for your videos and I look forward to seeing more of your content!

While pursuing my apparel design degree, I recently got to know about UXD and have been continuously familiarizing myself with the concepts of it for the past 3 months. I've taken a free visual design course while working on my graduation project with a good company but like you said, have it in my "gut" to pursue this field instead. I'm a Music Composer/Producer trying to have a parallel career. Currently self learning and diving deep into the world of UX. All the best to you! I'm 36 and I'd like to believe that age doesn't matter to make a career switch if you feel strongly about it.
I'm currently on the same boat! First-gen immigrant child and value financial security but looking for something that I love doing. I studied communications (specialization in visual design) but I wanted more ways to churn my creativity. I did (and still) work at odd jobs here and there, and definitely found out through my jobs that I like to try and find solutions that work for the business and the consumers/customers. I've heard about UX back in college but they didn't teach that in school, but the more I dug, the more interested I've become.
I'm in the beginning process of self-study and would love to hear more of your journey :)

My UX/UI design bootcamp starts at the end of August and even though Ive been kicking myself for making such a drastic career change I am so ready to learn UXD!!
I'm currently digging into UX design. I am warehouse/production worker (23 yo from Poland working in Netherlands) and i just can't handle how boring this job is. That's not how i want to spend the rest of my life. For now i just research so much stuff, watching yt videos and learning about design like i never before. As 13-16 yo i used to do some work with Photoshop, i always liked editing and creating new graphics for people, so that i found out month ago what this job is I just fell in love

As a student in international business literally bc it sounded cool and i didnt know what else to do fresh out of highschool (i would've studied art but i also don't feel the best abt my skills or the job opportunities down that line), and especially as a student with adhd I feel a lot of imposter syndrome, and just don't feel like my major is the best fit. I've been looking into UX Design because it combines what I love in art/design with what i like about business. It really just feels like something I should do and I am so excited to hear more and more about it, and seeing so much opportunity to switch to it!
Haha I have the same career path. I graduated with Intb and enjoyed what I learned but my heart wasn't in it. Self learning UXD on my own at a slower pace. UXD can always take you back to business. I did some info interviews and some generalists were moving towards business/ service design
hey, thanks for sharing this level of vulnerability! I can absolutely relate. I don’t want to say i’m diagnosed with ADHD but I’ve had trouble focusing in classrooms all my life. things need to be hands on or I have to be superrrrr intrigued to be focused for long periods of time.

How was this recommended to me 11 months later?! LOL But I’m also 25 and have been in this crazy quarter life crisis. It’s no joke LOL I’ve been looking into UXD for about 2 years but have always put excuses in front of it. Also the financial instability is frightening for that time frame of learning and searching for a job, but everyone always says the outcome is far more worth it. It’s truly so hard believe when you don’t know when you’ll get there! I’m just shocked how so much life has flown by and I’m still “thinking” about it. Your video honestly came at the right time bc you laid out a logical pathway way to help me figure out my why. A why strong enough for me! I need to find that and I thank you for sharing your thoughts process!

currently a pharmacology major entering her final year of college. i've always been into art, tech and creative stuff but was never brave enough to pursue it bc of financial security. im a first gen coming from a very similar background as u & my parents would have a heart attack if i told them i want to go into an ~artsy~ field. but it's either now or never! so im binging a bunch of videos on UX design. this has been so helpful!
i loved when u talked about how even though work doesn't define you, it is still a big part of your life, so it's important to be picky about it and not just work for the sake of comfort since you will inevitably feel uncomfortable for the rest of your life thinking about the what-if's

I got goosebumps while listening to your story because it is so similar to mine, I quit my job because I thought it is not fair to do both self-learning and working, and I was also in a stable environment but I asked myself this: will I want to do the same thing five years from now? do I want to be like my leader in the team? and the answer was a FAT NO and that's what got me here

I've just graduated and decided to take a gap year to change my major, also self-taught. I have to say that it's such a risky decision for me because at some parts, I feel like I don't trust my discipline and ability to make it. The peer pressure and social pressure about the career of freshers is huge. Time might totally be a waste which makes me feel scared. Self-study is tough and lonely sometimes, but I know I'm not alone and we are all putting effort to make this risk become a great opportunity in the future. Thank you, sis Lizzi
