    super helpful! I am a lawyer that finished a software dev bootcamp (I want to build helpful legal tools)- while working on my portfolio and choosing which projects to further develop, I realized that I wouldn't get very far without design. If I don't understand my user audience, how can I possibly develop useful tools and products for them?!? The more I delve into UX, the more I see that UR is critical to providing a roadmap to work from. Your videos and resources are incredibly helpful. I'm going to check them all out. Thank you. :)

    Hi! (comment quite unrelated to the video) 😅
    I've been a pretty silent viewer of yours since 8.5k. I'm currently majoring in Computer Science, but hoping to transfer to a school that offers Communication Research because my parents are not supportive in getting a fine arts/design degree (typical asian parents). Your videos have been really helpful in my decisions regarding the next steps of working towards this career. Not to mention, your delivery is easily digestible yet full of substance.

    This checks out! One thing I would add is that people who are interested in research do not need to learn how to design. This is one of the main confusions I see with researchers specifically. They need to know what research looks like in a design context, and how design happens, but they don't need design skills.

    • @AonaTalks
      @AonaTalks  2 года назад +4

      I agree! And just to clarify this refers to the actual design skills (i.e. using the tools and prototyping stuff), but the knowledge of UX and interaction design is still very needed imo because I see today a lot of academia researchers trying to getting into the field were dinged during interview process of lacking "product sense" and "ux sense". I also talked about this in this video: ruclips.net/video/REgMDstCfeQ/видео.html

    You content never misses! Thank you for all that you're doing for us !
    I've been trying to break into the field from September 2021..and I've found that I tend to accumulate a LOT of resources. I've my own repository but I haven't tackled that mountain completely. I just keep finding new information, but don't seem to take the time to absorb it all.
    I think I'm struggling with the motivation because my plan seems to be haywire...? I wish to be a researcher, but I'm thinking about design? One day I'm reading a medium article about a UXR's first day and the next I'm dabbling with Figma. I feel like I'm not focussing on one thing, but instead, jumping around.
    Also, I've done 1-2 projects for my UXR portfolio, but, I'm not trying out any other methods in UXR except surveys- i think I'm just overwhelmed.
    Any advice ? :(

    • @AonaTalks
      @AonaTalks  2 года назад +7

      This all depends on how eager do you want to be a UXR and how much efforts are you willing to give. In full honesty, I do think research is a bit harder to break into compare to design relatively speaking. It does take lots of rigor to do it right and without proper training (like in a class) and many tries in real life projects, it’s very hard to master it. Most folks don’t get their research right the first or second time they try. And for more experienced folks out there, it’s pretty easy to spot out junior work. So I would advise if your goal is to just get into UX and you also have a knack for design, don’t shut it down. It’s a bit easier to “break in” also because there’s more job opportunities compared to UXR. But one thing I wouldn’t recommend is to focus on both at the same time - I know this might be different than what others recommend, but I always think you only have limited time and energy to master one of them. The other one - keep it at a good-to-know basis. Hope this helps.

      @@AonaTalks it really does help! Thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time out to do this! Your transparent and honest response was just what I needed. It made me feel seen and heard!
      You've changed my life in more ways that one because the reason I've been able to get this far in my journey without having a burnout is because of the content you share ! Every thing is actionable- it's not mere facts being given out but it's also a roadmap that we can follow!
      Your contributions have been pivotal in my journey! I'm planning to follow your video about self starter projects right after I finish my masters in clinical psych this May!

    • @AonaTalks
      @AonaTalks  2 года назад

      Omg I know the pain... I have never quite adopted good note taking habits :P - I mostly print out my guide and write down (physically) big areas to pay attention to as I go through the moderation - and then I go back to my video to capture quotes and notes. Very backwards haha - but there are a lot of meeting session transcription tools out there that you might want to look into.

    Hi Aona! Thank you for sharing this video of resources and for creating this helpful channel. What would you say about adding research projects to my portfolio that didn't meet the research objectives/questions? Do you think I should state recommendations to improve? How would you go about this because I have applied research experience, but I care about research rigour and quality so uncertain if I should include it. I wasn't part of the research design process but mainly in a data collection capacity. Thank you!

    • @AonaTalks

      I would not recommend including a research project where your goals were not met or research questions not answered. Also you should only consider including projects where you have worked on from start to finish.
